Clara Jacobs
Clara Jacobs, 97, of Du Quoin, formerly of Elkville, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2003 at 10:57 p.m. in Marshall Browning Hospital.
Mrs. Jacobs was the owner of LP Gas Business and a member of St. John Church of Christ.
She was born February 24, 1906 in Jackson County, the daughter of James and Rose (Spangler) Halstead. She married Roger Jacobs on November 10, 1928 at Elkville and he preceded her in death on June 17, 1975.
Surviving are two sisters, Juanita Martie of Elkville and Phyllis Loucks of Tamaroa; several nieces and nephews and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bill Holzauer officiating. Interment was in Elkville Cemetery.
Friends called at the Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. until time of services.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Jessie L. Jones
Jessie L. Jones, age 87, of Pinckneyville, passed away Wednesday morning, June 11, 2003 at 10:10 a.m. in the Skilled Care Unit of the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Jessie was born February 14, 1916 in Rice,the daughter of Benjamin Steve and Ella McNeil (Craig) Chapman. She was united in marriage April 4, 1936 to John R. 'Dick' Jones and he preceded her in death on July 1, 1994. Jessie was a member of the First Pentecostal Church in Pinckneyville and a member of the ILGWU.
Jessie is survived by one son, Carl Richard Jones and wife Kay of Pinckneyville; three daughters, Darlene Schneider and husband Richard, Sue Buschschulte and Dixie Lueker and husband Pete, all of Pinckneyville; five granddaughters, Amy Lueker, Kerry Lueker, Dena Rook, Kelly Miller and Carol Pack; four grandsons, David Lueker, Steve Schneider, Tim and Jeff McCauley and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville Saturday, June 14 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Leonard Glover officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, Friday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. and again on Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until services.
Memorials may be made to the Skilled Care Unit of the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Ernest L. Langa
Ernest L. Langa, 85, died at 1:20 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2003 in Randolph County Care Center in Sparta.
Services were at 1 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Sparta. Burial was in Caledonia Cemetery.
Mr. Langa was retired from the Illinois Department of Mental Health in Chester, where he was a security therapy aid. He also worked at the Mt. Vernon Furnace Manufacturing Company.
He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WW II in the South Pacific.
He was born January 20, 1918 in Woodlawn to Frank W. and Josephine (Smolek) Langa. He married Marie M. Krisby on February 11, 1941 in Mt. Vernon. She survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Janet Epplin of Pinckneyville; one son, James Langa of Bluford; six grandchildren, Ed Dehn, Pat Langa, Jay Langa, Melisa Dycus, Doug Epplin and Allison Epplin and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Jim Dehn; two sisters, Rose Setzekorn and Cecelia Zamenski and two brothers, Frank R. Langa and Joe A. Langa.
Violet Melvin
Violet Melvin, 86, of Du Quoin, passed away at 11:50 P.M., Monday, June 2, 2003 at her residence.
Violet was a homemaker. She was a member of First Christian Church in Du Quoin.
She was born May 8, 1917 at Marissa, IL, the daughter of Alex and Elizabeth (Mart) Shelby.
She married Joe Melvin on December 29, 1934 at Pinckneyville, IL and he preceded her in death on January 6, 1976.
She is survived by her children - John Melvin, Nancy McNeely, Joeanna Robey, Dennis Melvin, Joseph Melvin, Vernon Melvin, all of Du Quoin, David Melvin of Phoenix, AZ, Christopher Melvin and Mark Melvin, both of Nebraska, three sisters - Catherine Ray of Du Quoin, Thelma Baycott of St. Louis, MO, and Juanita Walters of Effingham, IL, one brother - Charles Shelby of Clayborne, TX, fifty-one grandchildren, sixty-eight great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons - Norman and William, and one daughter - Ellen.
Funeral services were at 10:30 A.M., Friday, June 6, 2003 at I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Du Quoin with Rev. Gerald Wright officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 7 P.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Du Quoin.
Those attending the services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.
Stephen Lee Morgan
Stephen Lee Morgan, 52, of Du Quoin, passed away at 4:55 A.M., Monday, June 23, 2003 at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Stephen worked as a carpenter. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of VFW Post 513. He was a US Navy veteran of Vietnam.
He was born October 20, 1950 at Du Quoin, IL, the son of Silas and Alma Ruth (Graff) Morgan Jr.
He is survived by his wife - Deborah (Henderson) Morgan of Oklahoma, one daughter - Becky Gregg of Kansas, one son - Brian Morgan of Dowell, two daughters - Lindsey Henderson and Heather Henderson of Oklahoma, mother - Alma Morgan of Du Quoin, three brothers - Silas Morgan of Du Quoin, Larry Morgan of Elkville, and Gary Morgan of Elkville, one sister - Frances Herbert of Du Quoin, and three grandchildren - Dylan Bishop, Jayden Gregg, and Payton Morgan.
He was preceded in death by his father, one son - Nicholas Morgan, and one brother - Tom Morgan.
Graveside services were at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at the Elkville Cemetery in Elkville with Rev. Silas Morgan officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Military graveside rites were conducted by VFW Post 513.
Interment was in the Elkville Cemetery at Elkville.
Those attending the services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.
Norma Alice Nickens
Norma Alice Nickens, 83, of Tamaroa, passed away at 1:52 P.M., Sunday, June 1, 2003 at her residence.
Norma was a homemaker. She had also worked at Pinckneyville Garment Company and as a babysitter. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Tamaroa, member of WMU at the church, Sunday School Teacher and Bible School Teacher.
She was born February 24, 1920 at Tamaroa, IL, the daughter of Fred and Anna (Bauer) Corgan.
She married Marion N. Nickens on November 14, 1943 at Tamaroa, IL and he preceded her in death on June 26, 1999.
She is survived by one daughter - Carole Moody of Pinckneyville, IL, one son - Fred A. Nickens of Du Quoin, IL, two sisters - Berl Lynch and Anna Belle Moore, both of Tamaroa, IL, one sister-in-law - Hazel Corgan of Tamaroa, IL, seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at First Baptist Church of Tamaroa with Rev. Raymond Baggott officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa and from 9 to 10 A.M., Wednesday at the church.
Interment was in the Tamaroa Cemetery at Tamaroa, IL.
