Daniel L. Mathis
Daniel L. Mathis, age 71, of rural Pinckneyville, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at 6:45 p.m. in Carbondale Memorial Hospital.
Danny was born in Pinckneyville on July 28, 1929, the son of George W. and Nellie E. (Rushing) Mathis Jr. He was united in marriage to Gladys Grace Campbell on October 26, 1946 at the First Baptist Church in Nashville. In addition to raising his family of five children, he devoted his life to his wife, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Danny was a retired coal miner from the Captain Mine, having worked 40 years in the mining industry. He was a member of the UMWA Local #1392, and a member of Beaucoup Baptist Church of Pinckneyville, where he served as a deacon and song leader for many years.
Danny is survived by his wife Gladys of Pinckneyville; one son, Daniel Mark Mathis and his wife Lillian of Pinckneyville; three daughters, Nora Beth Helvey and her husband Larry of Pinckneyville, Susan Knapp and her husband Ted of Mt. Vernon and Cynthia Cluck and her husband Michael of Herrin; three brothers, Thomas F. Mathis and wife Joy of Poincian, Fla., David L. Mathis and wife Dixie of Pinckneyville and Kenneth G. Mathis and wife Mary of Sparta; four sisters, Delores Rushing and husband Robert of Pinckneyville, JoAnn Stanton and husband John of Granite City, Mary Surry and husband Richard of Atlanta, Ga., Beverly Vanhoorebeke of Tamaroa; nine grandchildren, Mitchell and Meredith Petty of Evansville, Ind., Bryan Helvey of Belleville, Kristin Helvey of Herrin, Susan Helvey and Jim Garavaglia of Pinckneyville, Jeanna and Aaron Deaton of Herrin, Jared and Megan Knapp of Mt. Vernon, David Helvey of Pinckneyville, Dustin Cluck of Carterville and Jacie Mathis of Pinckneyville; three great-grandchildren, Landon, Emma and Madison. Danny is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Ellen Petty; a granddaughter, Rhonda Kaye Helvey; a grandson, Dustin Daniel Mathis; a niece and a brother-in-law.
Funeral services were Monday, January 22 at the Beaucoup Baptist Church in Pinckneyville at 10 a.m. with Rev. Bill Fox officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville Sunday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. and again Monday morning at the church from 8 a.m. until time of services.

Anna Elizabeth Hubler
Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Hubler, 85, of New London, Mo., formerly of Rice, passed away Friday, January 12, 2001 at Hannibal Regional Hospital at Hannibal, Mo.
Mr.s. Hubler was born in Perry County on February 5, 1915, the daughter of Ira and Myrtle (Hill) Jones. She was united in marriage to Floyd R. Hubler in Perry County on March 1, 1932 and he preceded her in death on June 10, 1972.
Mr.s Hubler made her home at Rice until moving to New London, Mo. in 1989. Anna wa a member of Concord Baptist Church at Rice.
Left to mourn her passing ate three daughters, Shirley (Kenneth) Carver of New London, Mo., Myrtle (Donald) L. Brown of Granite City and Eleanor A. Love of Madison, Alabama; three brothers, Jack Jones, Ira Jones and Bobby Jones, all of Pinckneyville; three sisters, Addie Mae Hubler, Pauline Willis and Emma Magerkurth, all of Pinckneyville; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relations and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two daughters, Betty Roland and a daughter in infancy; two grandsons, Royce Roland and Donald Brown; three brothers, Earl, Amos and Roy Jones and six sisters, Lenora Wiles, Ollie M. Mize, Irene Scott, Evelyn Scott and infants, Albert and Roberta Jones.
Funeral services were held at the Campagna Funeral Home of Nashville on Tuesday, January 16 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Steve Hamilton officiating. Interment was in Concord cemetery at Rice.
Friends called at the Campagna Funeral Home of Nashvillle Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of services.

Edna May Pitman
Edna May Pitman, 57, of Tamaroa, passed away at 2:34 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2001 at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Edna was a homemaker and a member of the Tamaroa Pentecostal Church.
She was born March 10, 1943 at Tamaroa, the daughter of Alfred E. and Frances May Weisel Haycraft. She married
Kenneth L. Pitman Sr. on August 31, 1960 at the Tamaroa Pentecostal Church and he survives.
She is survived by her husband of Tamaroa; father, Alfred E. Haycraft of Tamaroa; three sons, Ken Pitman Jr. of Denver, Colo., Alfred Pitman of Tamaroa and Nigel Pitman of Tamaroa; two daughters, Frances Reinschmidt of DuQuoin and Alice Wise of Littleton, Colo.; one brother, Pete Haycraft of Tamaroa; one sister, Virginia Moss of Tamaroa and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother and one brother, J.C. Haycraft.
Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 24 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Jackie Joe Davison officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.
Interment was in the Antioch cemetery at Tamaroa.

Rev. Raymond L. Crews
Rev. Raymond L. Crews, 80, of McLeansboro, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2001 at 11:25 a.m. at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.
Rev. Crews was at retired minister serving Mt. Olivet Church for 22 years. He had also worked at Braden Valley Church for six years and at Plainview Church for four years. He was also a grocery store manager at Kroger in Elkville, Sesser and Ridgeway; Bracy Stores in Sesser and Marion and Big Johns Stores in Carmi and McLeansboro. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II, serving from 1944-46. He was a member of Olivet Baptist Church and Ministerial Alliance.
He was born October 16, 1920 at Hallidayboro, the son of Armsted and Golda (Reese) Crews. He married
Martha Wheeler on April 29, 1939 and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Gary (Betty) Crews of Morgantown, Ind. and Larry (Jan) Crews of Paducah, Kentucky; daughter, Mrs. Carol (Richard) Daniels of Salem; a sister, Mrs. Blanche Schwinn of DuQuoin; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were Sunday, January 21 at 2 p.m. at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with Rev. Robert Sefried officiating. Interment was in Mt. Olivet cemetery at McLeansboro.
Visitation was Saturday at Gholson Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m.
William Douglas Davison III
William Douglas "Doug" Davison III, 74, of Robertsdale, Alabama, formerly of Du Quoin, died Saturday evening at 8:49 p.m. in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Mr. Davison was born December 9, 1926 in Du Quoin, Ill., the son of William D. Davison, Jr. and Elizabeth (Weinberg) Davison. He was married
to June Bossle.
Years ago Mr. Davison served as circulation manager of the Du Quoin Evening Call newspaper, with whom his aunt was connected. He was a member of the Loxley (Alabama) United Methodist Church. A member of the American Legion, Mr. Davison served his country in the army in the infantry from 1946-1954 and left the service with the rank of staff sergeant.
Survivors include his wife June Davison of Robertsdale, Alabama; two sons William D. Davison IV of Bourbannis, Illinois and Thomas John Davison of Houston, Texas; one daughter Pat Green of Du Quoin; a stepdaughter Cathy J. Long of Robertsdale and three stepsons Kevin B. Owen of Atlanta, Ga.; Jeffrey S. Owen of Foly, Alabama and Eric A. Owen of Robertsdale. Also surviving are six grandchildren (a seventh preceded him in death) and10 stepgrandchildren.
A memorial service was held this evening (Monday) at 6:30 p.m. in Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel with Rev. Katherine Graves of the First Christian Church of Carbondale officiating. Burial was in the National cemetery in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Ruth Elaine Cavins Provenzano
Our loved one, Ruth Elaine Cavins Provenzano went to be with the Lord January 25, 2001. She was born in DuQuoin November 29, 1933, the daughter of George and Gladys Cavins. She married
Manny Provenzano November 26, 1955 and he survives.
Elaine accepted Christ as her Savior when she was a teenager and has been a devoted follower, committed to doing his work. She was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church at her home in Powder Springs, Georgia where services were held Sunday, January 28, 2001.
In addition to her husband Manny, she is survived by a son, Dale and wife Ellen; three daughters, Lyn and husband Frank, Ruth Ann and husband David and June and husband Grant; grandchildren, Danny, Jenifer, Jessica, Laine, Tyler, Blake, Zack, Emma, Breann, Ashley and Ben; one brother, Bruce Cavins; two sisters, Georgia Zabel and Lillian Newman and many other relatives and friends.
Elaine loved Jesus, always praising His Holy Name and so very devoted to her family and friends, always there to help with so much love and understanding.
She had a special love for a children's program at her church, called Angel's Nest, that she oversaw for 12 years.
She was a very unselfish, joyful person, always friendly with a big smile, even when in pain and knew and stressed that laughter was a very important element in everyone's life so she wrote and practiced the following:
You know that laughter is needed in your life
Your endorphins system depends on it, that's right
So when you get a real big hoot-
The medicine kit turns loose-
And sends all those little pac man on their way-
So lets all Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha!
Jesus said in St. John 14:2 "In my house there are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go there to prepare a place for you."
We find peace in knowing, He is saying to Elaine "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
We all love you so much Elaine.

Roger A. Cook
Roger A. Cook, 63, of DuQuoin, passed away at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
Roger was a retired shot fire driller at the Freeman #11 Coal Mine in DuQuoin. He was a member of the St. Johns United Church of Christ in DuQuoin, DuQuoin Elks Lodge, UMWA Local 5134, NRA and NSRA for over 20 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Roger was an avid hunter, hunting turkey, deer, rabbits and squirrels.
He was born February 21, 1937 at Winkle, the son of Benjamin F. and Faye (Miller) Cook. He was raised by his grandparents, Mary and Louis Everette Cook.
He married
Judith Philbrick on April 24, 1960 at Murphysboro and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of DuQuoin; daughter, Sherry Mathis and husband Rob of Pinckneyville; son, Steve Cook of DuQuoin; four sisters, Peggy Schnare of St. Charles, Mo., Sally Crain of DuQuoin, Mary Wallace of Carbondale and Charlotte Dawson of Mulkeytown; one brother, L.E. Cook of Sardis, Tenn. and five grandchildren, Andrew, Allie and Alex Mathis, Shelbey and Cortney Valier.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; sisters, Bonnie East, Margaret Rude and Lucille Bradley and brothers, Benjamin Cook Jr. and Earl V. Cook.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday, January 26 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Rob Mathis and Rev. Charles Smith officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.
Interment was in the Cudgetown cemetery.

Laverne M. Kabat
Laverne M. Kabat, 64, of Waltonville, passed away at 10:10 p.m. Monday, January 15, 2001 at the Friendship Manor in Nashville.
Laverne was a homemaker and had been a secretary at the Waltonville Grain Co. for 14 years. She was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church in DuBois.
She was born December 8, 1936 in Perry County, the daughter of Mike and Rose (Nikrant) Prusacki. She married
Arthur Kabat on September 8, 1956 in Washington County and he passed away on January 3, 1996.
She is survived by one son, Daniel R. Kabat of Waltonville; five daughters, Carol S. Self and husband Billy of Summerville, S.C., Kathy L. Conner and husband Jeff of Ashley, Linda K. Stanfield, and husband Larry of Scheller, Angela M. Kabat of Gainesville, Fla. and Jennifer A. Kabat of Herrin; one sister, Bernice Nowakowski of Tamaroa; three brothers, Ralph Prusacki and wife Dorothy of DuQuoin, Michael R. Prusacki and wife Rosalea of DuQUoin and Leon J. Prusacki and wife Connie of Tamaroa and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday, January 19 at the St. Charles Catholic Church in DuBois with Msgr. Melvin Vandeloo officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa. The Rosary was said at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Rodney S. Pyle
Rodney S. Pyle, 27, of DuQuoin, died Friday, January 19, 2001 at 11:35 p.m. in Scott City, Mo.
Mr. Pyle was a Laborer on Construction. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
He was born April 30, 1973 in Pinckneyville, the son of Kevin K. Pyle and Cheryl Ann (Rider) Krone.
Surviving are his father and his wife, Kevin and Janice Pyle of DuQuoin; mother and her husband, Cheryl Ann and Mark Krone of DuQuoin; son, Holden of Elkville; brother, Tyler Krone of DuQuoin; sisters, Jill Pyle and Chelsea Krone of DuQuoin; paternal grandmother, Maxine Geistdorfer of DuQuoin; maternal step-grandmother, Joy Rider of Elkville and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were Tuesday, January 23 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.
Friends called Monday, January 22 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and from 7:30 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday.

Glen D. Kalb
Glen D. Kalb, 76, of Troy, Ill., passed away Monday, January 29, 2001 at Caring First Nursing Home in Breese, Ill.
Mr. Kalb had been a safety specialist for Amirsure Insurance Co. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Maryville and a charter member of its Senior Club. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of WW II. He served in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Montpelier as an anti-aircraft gunner.
Surviving are his wife Jean (Moak) Kalb of Troy; sons, Timothy J. (Becky) Kalb of Troy and Mark A. (Kathy) Kalb of Red Wing, Minn.; brother, Clifford Kalb of Galesburg; sister, Dorothy (Larry) Koelling of Largo, Fla.; grandchildren, Andy and Kasi Lynn Kalb and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Gertrude (Emery) Kalb; two brothers, Raymond and Robert Kalb and two sisters, Pearl Williams and Helen Freeman.
Funeral services were Thursday, February 1 at the First Baptist Church in Maryville with Rev. Mark Kalb officiating. Interment was in Mueller Hill cemetery at Pinckneyville.
Visitation was Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Albert Joseph Seibert
Albert Joseph Seibert, 85, of DuQuoin, passed away at 5:50 a.m. Thursday, January 25, 2001 at Carbondale Nursing and Rehab Center.
Mr. Seibert was retired from Blue Bell Packing Company and was also a farmer. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He was born May 4, 1915 at DuQuoin, the son of Andrew and Mary (Stein) Seibert. He married
Lydia Golden Roper on May 26, 1936 at DuQuoin and she preceded him in death on April 12, 1992.
Surviving are daughter, Margaret Hollis of DeSoto; son, James A. Seibert of Carbondale; brother, Bill Seibert of DuQuoin and four grandchildren, Joseph H. Hollis of DuQUoin, Mary Beth Reiman of Carbondale, Steven Seibert of Alton and Andrew Seibert of Springfield and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three brothers.
Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, January 27 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Msgr. Harry J. Jerome officiating. The Rosary was said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Maxton Funeral Home.
Interment was in Sacred Heart cemetery at DuQuoin.
Friends called from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and until Rosary on Saturday at Maxton Funeral Home.
