Wilfred Leo Smith
Wilfred Leo Smith, age 58, of 5018 Swanwick Rice Road, Pinckneyville, died suddenly on Sunday, January 28, 2001 at 6:17 a.m. in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Emergency Room.
Wilfred was born in Perry County on September 11, 1942, the son of Wilfred Xavier and Rose Mildred (Toman) Smith. He married
Jane A. Winters on June 15, 1963 at Todd's Mill and she survives. He was well known as a former softball pitcher, coached basketball for many area grade schools, was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, Todd's Mill, the Pinckneyville Knights of Columbus, a farmer and a press operator at the former Spartan Printing, Sparta.
Survivors include his wife, Jane; three sons, Wilfred John Smith of Pinckneyville, Leo Lee Smith of Pontiac and Daniel Lee Smith and his fiancee, Abby Towery of St. Louis, Mo.; two daughters, Catherine Yeager and her husband Bill of Tamaroa and Millie Rosado and her husband Bill of Carterville; three brothers, Joseph Patrick Smith of Pinckneyville, Raymond A. Smith and his wife, Linda of Pinckneyville and William Eugene Smith of Metropolis; one sister, Betty Offerman and her husband, Gary of Beaumont, Tex.; five grandchildren, Justin yeager, leigha Yeager, Zach Loyd, Kamen Rosado and Aaron Towery and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 31 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church with Fr. James Van Oss officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville on Tuesday from 6 until 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8 until 9:30 a.m. The Rosary was said at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Denton Archie Williams
Denton Archie Williams, 82, of Vergennes, passed away at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2001 in DeSoto.
Mr. Williams was a retired business person. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Vergennes. He was a 50-year member of DeSoto Lodge $287, a member of Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Southern Illinois of Belleville, Ainad Shrine Temple of East St. Louis and was the active member of the Republican Party.
He was born Friday, March 22, 1918 at Ava, the son of Denton H. and Bertha (Lively) Williams. He married
Naoma Mae Bradley on November 15, 1941 at Hoyleton and she preceded him in death on October 13, 1995.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Robin Williams of DeSoto; two grandchildren, Erin Ruth Williams and Denton Lee Williams; one brother, Gale Williams of Murphysboro and one sister, Ruth Cottom of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Rita Diane Williams and three brothers, Floyd, Raymond and Glenn.
Funeral services were Thursday, January 18 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Vergennes with Rev. Bill Wiggs Jr. officiating. Interment was in Parrish cemetery at Vergennes.
Visiting hours at Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava were after 5 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
Masonic Services were held at the funeral home on January 17 at 7 p.m.

Clarica Lively VanBuskirk
Clarica "Cheta" Lively VanBuskirk, 52, of DuQuoin, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2001 at 12:20 a.m. in her home with family and friends after a brief illness.
Mrs. Van Buskirk was a sales clerk at All Pro Auto Parts. She was of the Protestant faith.
She was born May 23, 1948 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Archie Thomas and Jane Lee (LaBrier) Lively.
Surviving are two sons, Bobby Van Buskirk and wife Angela of Elkville and Kevin Van Buskirk of DuQuoin; one daughter, Michelle Van Buskirk and Fiancee Mike Tilley of Dowell; three brothers, Archie Lively of Pinckneyvillle, Thomas Lively of Goreville and Richard Lively of DuQuoin; two sisters, Charlotte Keller of DuQuoin and Minerva Fred of DuQuoin and four grandchildren, Casey, Carrie and Cristen VanBuskirk and Brittany Tilley.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were Sunday, January 7 at 1 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dennis Fitzsimmons officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin.
Friends called at Neal-Mcclure Funeral Home on Saturday, January 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. until time of services.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Perry County Hospice.
Harold Homer Habbe
Harold Homer Habbe, 80, of Tampa passed away Thursday, February 22, 2001 at his home.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Gus Habbe of Wood River, Cecil Habbe of Nashville, Feron Anson of Benton City, Mo. and Floyd Habbe of John Day, Ore.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Diana R. Habbe; son Brad Habbe and his wife, Roseann and granddaughter, Christina, all of Portland, Ohio; daughter Carolyn Thompson of DuQuoin, grandson, John Thompson, his wife Debbe and three children of Wilmington, Ma., granddaughter, Jill Chumley and two children of DuQuoin.
He was born in Nashville, Ill., the son of Leonard and Carrie Rather Habbe. He served his country during World War II and Korea, until his retirement in 1965.
He was a member of Lodge No. 579, F. & A.M. of Fort Benning, Ga., Commandry No. 3, Knight Templar of Columbus, Ga. and Ainad Temple at East St. Louis.
He was Chief Deputy Sheriff of Washington County, Ill. until 1969. In the Ohio area, he served as the Employee Assistance Program Counselor and Certified Addiction Counselor in Youngstown/ Mahoning County withe the Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic.
Harod had been a resident of Tampa since the spring of 1983, coming from Youngstown, Ohio. He was the President of Home Sales and Service Inc., very active in Human Resources for Acts and in the Recovering Community. He also served as chairman of the Chrysalis House for a number of years.
Graveside services were conducted 1:30 p.m. Monday at Florida National cemetery with full military honors. The family received friends Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Marsicano-B Marion Reed-Stowers Funeral Home, 4040, Henderson Blvd., with a Masonic Service conducted by Memorial Lodge 23 F. & A.M. at 3:30 p.m.
Geneva Eileen Gray
Geneva Eileen Gray, 77, of DuQuoin, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2001 at 12:35 a.m. in Marshall Browning Hospital.
Mrs. Gray was a member of VFW Auxiliary and St. Peters Lutheran Church in Joliet. She was born December 6, 1923 at Joliet, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Farmer) Studer. She married
William Gray in Joliet and he passed away in 1990.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald Fullriede of New Lenox and Ralph Hickox of Broken Arrow, Okla.; one brother, Dean Studer of New Lenox; one sister, Shirley Gurnitz of Joliet; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Victoria Jones.
Mrs. Gray requested to be cremated. Neal-McClure Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of local arrangements.
Ada Brueggemann
Ada Brueggemann, 79, of Sparta, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2001 at 1:30 a.m. at Sparta Community Hospital.
Mrs. Brueggemann was a homemaker and a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Walsh. She was a life-member of Sparta VFW 2698 Auxiliary, was the "popcorn lady' for 42 years at Randolph County Care Center Auxiliary and a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
She was born September 12, 1921 at Walsh, the daughter of Alec and Hanna (Eggemeyer) Mahan. She married
Byron M. Brueggemann on June 28, 1941 at Perryville, Mo. and he preceded her in death on January 23, 1989.
Surviving are two daughters, Carol Phillips of Tamaroa and Dorothy Feira of Sesser; three sons, Edward Allen Brueggemann of Sparta, Fredrick Dean Brueggemann of Evansville, Ill. and Gary Gene Brueggemann of Sparta; grandchildren, Michael Scott Phillips of Tamaroa, Barbara Brewer of Tamaroa, Angela Bullock of Sesser, Teresa Stacey of Sesser, Shawna Brueggemann of Sparta, Lean Brueggemann of New Athens, Chad Brueggemann of New Athens, Tim Brueggemann of Red Bud and Bethanie Brueggemann of Evansville and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 13 at 11 a.m. at McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta with Pastor Harold Weber officiating. Interment was in Caledonia cemetery in Sparta.
Friends called from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. until hour of service at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta.

Doris O. Rose Beaman
Doris O. Rose Beaman, of Elgin, Ill., formerly of DuQuoin, passed away March 31, 2001. Funeral services were Tuesday, April 3 at St. James AME Church of Elgin.
She was the daughter of Lillie Clarry and the sister of Katie Phillips, Stan and Bruce Clarry and Rita McGuire, all of DuQuoin.
Ola M. Lybe
Ola M. Lybe, 92, of DuQuoin, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at 9:40 p.m. at the Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin.
Ola was a homemaker, member of the First United Methodist Church of DuQuoin, 50 year member of the Eastern Star and member of the Perry County Gold Plate.
Ola was born June 16, 1908, in Steubenville, Ohio, the daughter of Mark William and Gertrude (Scarlott) Johnston.
She married
Garnett C. Lybe on November 18, 1936 in Chicago. He passed away November 15, 1983.
She is survived by 1 daughter, Pene Harbuck and husband Randall of DuQuoin; 2 sons, Kenneth Lybe and wife Linda of Murfreesboro, Tenn. and Dennis Lybe and wife Sandi of Brookfield, Conn.; 13 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Howard Johnston.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 2, 2001 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. C.L. McKinnies officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Eastern Star services were held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin.
Friends may make memorials to the Sacred Heart School.
Jay Douglas Luckey
Jay Douglas Luckey, 21, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, in an automobile accident in Vista, California.
Born December 29, 1979, in Chicago, Illinois, he lived in San Francisco and was visiting his parents who reside in Vista. Prior to moving to San Francisco, he lived with his parents in Chicago and DuQuoin, Illinois, Palm Springs, San Diego and Vista, California.
He was a musician and played in a San Francisco band, Bankers. In addition, he was a tax professional with the international firm of Deloitte & Touche LLP in the Oakland, California office.
Jay's music was important to him. He enjoyed all aspects, especially song writing and performing. His spirit lives on in his music.
Mr. Luckey is survived by his parents, Jim and Jeanie Luckey of Vista; brother Craig Luckey of Savannah, Georgia; and maternal grandmother, Elvera Michael of Centralia, Illinois.
A memorial service was scheduled for 6 p.m., Thursday, April 5, at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Vista with The Reverend Canon George T. Hemingway officiating.

Mildred L. Caupert
Mildred L. Caupert, 86, of Pinckneyville, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at 3:45 p.m. in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Mildred was born on September 4, 1914 in Welge, Ill., the daughter of Adolph P. and Carolina (Wolter) Sasse. She married
Rudolph C. Caupert on August 17, 1957 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Chester and he preceded her in death on October 6, 1983. Mildred worked at the International Shoe Factory in Chester. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Conant, the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the Republican Women's Committee. She also assisted her husband as the Republican Committee Chairman for Perry County.
Survivors include a sister, Selma Ebers of Chester; a nephew, James Sasse of Collinsville; a niece, Barbara Welge and husband Mike of Chester and three great-nephews, Matthew, Joshua and Jason Welge. She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Raymond Sasse and Adolph Sasse.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 16 at 10 a.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Conant with Rev. Russ Helbig officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin.
Visitation was held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Thursday, March 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 8 to 8:30 a.m. then at the church from 9 a.m. until services.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Hour.
Bessie Jane Griffith Davis
Mrs. Bessie Jane Griffith Davis, 82, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at 8:25 p.m. in Regional Medical Center of Northeast Arkansas.
Mrs. Davis was a member of the Washington Avenue Church of Christ. She was a homemaker, having lived in Jonesboro and Bay areas most of her life. She was born March 4, 1919 at Ash Flat, Ark.
Surviving are her husband, Ray Divis of the home; stepmother, Jessie Griffith of Truman; four daughters, Willma Hickman of Imboden, Ark., Lillian Richardson of Brich Tree, Mo., Alfreda Davis of West Memphis, Ark. and Loretta Hill of DuQuoin; two brothers, Floyd Griffith of Southaven, Miss. and Lacy Griffith of Jonesboro, Ark.; nine grandchildren; seven grandchildren and a host of friends and other relatives.
Her parents and four sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral services were Friday, March 16 at 10 a.m. at Roller-Farmers Union Chapel in Jonesboro, Ark. minister Kenneth Gossett and assisting minister Israel Crocker officiating. Interment was in Oaklawn cemetery.
Visitation was Thursday, March 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home.

Allen Dale Davison
Allen Dale Davison Sr., 79, of DuQuoin, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2001 at 7:40 a.m. at Marshall Browning Hospital.
Mr. Davison was a Railroad Clerk. He was a member of Spirit of Life Christian Church, DuQuoin, and served as an elder in the church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Pacific during World War II.
He was born April 2, 1921 at DuQuoin, the son of Thomas and Emily (Huntley) Davison. He married
Elizabeth Williamson on October 12, 1940 at Perrryville, Mo.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Davison of DuQuoin; one son and daughter-in-law, Allen Dale Davison Jr. and Delores of DuQuoin; one daughter and son-in-law, DiAnna and Lybrand Hawk of DuQuoin; one brother, Jackie Lee Davison of Tamaroa; one sister, Dorett Stone of Pinckneyville; four grandchildren, Kimberly James of DuQuoin, Bill Hawk of Elkville, Allen Dale Davison III of DuQuoin and Thomas G. Davison of Herrin and seven great-grandchildren, Lindsey King, Joshua King, Bryleigh James, Brookland Hawk, Tyler Hawk, Taylor Hawk and Elizabeth Ann Hawk.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were Wednesday, March 7 at 1 p.m. at Spirit of Life Christian Church with Rev. Gerald Wright officiating.
Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.
Friends called Wednesday from 11 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Lawrence J. Gassel
Lawrence J. Gassel, 71, of DuQuoin, passed away at 3:35 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Marshall Browning Hospital.
Mr. Gassel was a dairy farmer and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was born December 27, 1929 at St. Louis, Mo., the son of Bernard and Louise (Gugier) Gassel. He married
Anna B. Mann on August 13, 1951 at Ava.
Surviving are his wife Anna Gassel of DuQuoin; three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Sherry Gassel of Carlyle, Billie and Pauline Gassel of Elkville and Jerry and Cheryl Gassel of Elkville; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Steve Fulkner of Mesquite, Tex.; one brother, Ben Gassel of DuQuoin; three sisters, Francis Korando of Chester, Rosemary Doll of Chester and Bernice Rickenberg of Tilden and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bobby Joe; one daughter, Wanda Terry; one grandson; four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were Saturday, March 31 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Interment was in St. Bruno cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Friday, March 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 to 9:45 a.m. at which time we will move to the church.
The Rosary was said at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
