Juanita M. Saunders
Juanita M. Saunders, 84, of DuQuoin, passed away at 2:06 a.m. Sunday, March 11, 2001 at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
Juanita was retired from the dietary department of Marshall Browning Hospital after 34 years of service. She was of the Christian faith.
She was born October 8, 1916 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Henry J. and Ida Mae (Hargett) Saunders.
She is survived by two sisters, Floy Conte and Dorothy Dienes, both of DuQuoin; four grandchildren, Eric Saunders of DuQuoin, Kristina Anheuser of DuQuoin, Jeanne Cook and husband Rodger of DuQuoin and Angie McKinnies and husband David of DuQuoin; five great-grandchildren, Catrina Prather and husband John of DuQuoin, Andrea McKinnies of DuQuoin, Brian Cook of DuQuoin, Scott Cook of DuQuoin and Lacy Cook of DuQuoin; a dear friend, Imogene Stanley of DuQuoin and many special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Irwin Gene Saunders; parents; one brother, Frank Saunders and two sisters, Frances Stahlheber and Wilma Jean Saunders.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 13 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. C.L. McKinnies officiating. Interment was in the Old DuQuoin cemetery.

Agnes E. Schimpf
Agnes E. Schimpf, 88, of DuQuoin, passed away at 1:00 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2001 at the Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin.
Agnes was a homemaker and had worked at Gieger Bakery for many years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DuQuoin.
She was born August 4, 1912 at Ava, the daughter of William and Anna (Bettag) Rosenberger. She married
Virgil D. Schimpf on February 9, 1937 at Ava and he passed away August 13, 1991.
She is survived by one son, Charles D. Schimpf and wife Joyce of DuQuoin; two daughters, Mary Ann Hunleth and husband Frank of St. Louis, Mo. and June A. Gotta and husband Joseph of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Raymond Rosenberger and wife Pat of Ava; two sisters, Florence Alstat of Pinckneyville and Roslyn Pugh of East Peoria; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two brothers, Herman and Albert Rosenberger.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 22 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DuQuoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin. The Rosary was said at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery at DuQuoin.
Friends may make memorials to any of the Sacred Heart Church funds.
Tim Sprague
Tim Sprague of Guthrie, Oklahoma, passed away on March 16, 2001 at 3:24 a.m. in Guthrie Oklahoma Community Hospital.
Time was born on June 11, 1961 in Southern Illinois and later moved to Guthrie, Okla. in 1976 where he was employed as an auto mechanic.
Survivors include wife Regina (Vitale) Sprague; son, Timmy Sprague; daughter, Kristy (Sprague) Senters and husband Joe of Guthrie, Okla. and lots of family in Guthrie, Okla.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 20 at 10 a.m. in Guthrie, Okla.
Visitation was held at the Community Funeral Home in Guthrie, Okla.

Alice V. Polley
Alice V. Polley, 96, of DuQuoin, passed away at 12 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2001 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
Alice was a retired school teacher, she had taught at the DuQUoin High School from 1937 to 1965. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in DuQuoin and the United Methodist Women.
She was born May 18, 1904 at Mifflin, Wisconsin, the daughter of W.T. and Violet (Greenhill) Walker. She married
Van Polley on June 24, 1949 at Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and he preceded her in death September 28, 1977.
She is survived by two step-daughters, Mrs. R.W. (Marilyn) Heape of Ft. Meyer, Fla. and Mrs. Donald (Emma Joyce) Gilley of Park Forrest, Ill.; one sister, Lois Bird of Madison, Wisconsin; three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 23 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Max Borah officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home.
Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at DuQuoin.

Ethel Marie Woods
Ethel Marie Woods, 81, of Elkville, passed away at 10:50 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2001 at her residence.
Ethel was a homemaker and of the Protestant faith.
She was born July 11, 1919 at Makanda, the daughter of Riley and Stella (Lindsey) Tippy. She married
Walter Woods on June 30, 1937 at Carbondale and he passed away January 4, 1996.
She is survived by three sons, Larry Woods of Marion, Bill Woods of Murphysboro and Jimmy Woods of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Shirley Keppner of Harrisburg and Margaret Jarvis of Cambria; one brother, Clyde Tippy of Murphysboro; a brother- and sister-in-law, Tommy and Jewell Woods of Bush, Ill.; a special friend, Harlan Sims of DuQuoin; 12 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Clifford Tippy; sister, Millie Murray and grandchild, Pamela Keppner.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 12 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Robbie Chitwood officiating. Interment was in the Elkville cemetery.

Leonard Ramey
Leonard "Pete' Ramey, 87, of Centralia, formerly of Dowell, passed away Friday, March 16, 2001 at 6:00 p.m. at Centralia Manor in Centralia.
Mr. Ramey was born April 22, 1913 in Floyd County Kentucky, the son of Kennis and Susanna (Mosley) Ramey. He married
Eva Case in February 1932 in Floyd County and she preceded him in death in February 1945. He then married
Irene Stennet in February 1945 in Albion, Ill. and she passed away in January 1988.
He lived most of his later years in Dowell and moved to Centralia about a year ago. He was a retired bricklayer. He was a member of the Baptist Church, Brick Masons Union. He enjoyed making furniture for family and friends and enjoyed fishing.
Surviving are one son, Leslie Ramey of Frankfort, Ky.; one daughter, Ruby Tomblinson of Mesa, Ariz.; brothers, Jack Ramey and wife Delores of Centralia, Paul Ramey and wife Annie of Yipsilanti, Mich. and Woodrowe Ramey and wife Bernice of Mansfield, Ohio; sister, Bessie Lafferty and husband Jesse of Yipsilanti, Mich.; six grandchildren, Darryl Hall of Mesa, Ariz., Devan Hall and wife Toni of Arlington, Tex, Lisa Hall of Mitchell, Ind., Kelly Reed of Richmond, Va., Suzanne Polk of Bedford, Ind. and Tresa Reed of Glendale, Ariz.; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a special nephew, Dan Ramey of Centralia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eva; wife, Irene; two sons, Leonard Ramey Jr. and Loranzie Ramey; one brother, Willard and four sisters, Edna, Dulzie, Ellen and Nemmon.
Funeral services weree held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Garnier and Sons Funeral Home in Centralia. Friends called from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Samaria cemetery in Albion, Ill.

Joseph R. Rakonick
Joseph R. Rakonick, a retired police sergeant who served more than 35 years with the St. Louis Police Department, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at his home in Spanish Lake of complications from back surgery and a heart condition. He was 89.
Mr. Rakonick was born in St. Louis. He worked as a shoemaker at the old Hamilton-Brown Shoe Co. in St. Louis in the 1930s.
In 1943, Mr. Rakonick began working for the St. Louis Police Department, but he took two years off to serve in the Navy in World War II. He returned to St. Louis and the Police Department and became a sergeant in the old 12th District in 1962.
Mr. Rakonick retired in 1976. He returned to work as a civilian in communications at police headquarters downtown for five years.
Mr. Rakonick was a member of the American Legion and the St. Louis Police Officers Association.
His wife, Viola Feldhaus Rakonick, died in 1955. He married
June Brown Rakonick of Spanish Lake in 1956.
Visitation was from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 18 at Buchholz Spanish Lake Mortuary, 1645 Redman Road. A funeral mass was celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 12110 Larimore Road, Spanish Lake. Interment was in Jefferson Barracks National cemetery.
In addition to his wife, surviving are a daughter, Joan Walsh of Florissant; a brother, John Rakonick of florissant; two sisters, Adelaide Zamburski of Florissant and Marie Cicotte of St. Louis County; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Grayell B. Pursell
Grayell B. Pursell, age 90, of Pinckneyville, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at 4:25 a.m. in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit.
Grayell was born November 30, 1910 in Pinckneyville, the son of Perry and Lena Caroline (Birkner) Pursell. He married
Roberta Bigham on September 18, 1932 in Pinckneyville and she survives. He retired as a welder after 40 years, having worked at Pyramid Coal Co. and the Southwestern Coal Co. Grayell was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Pinckneyville and for many years was a church trustee and a Sunday School superintendent. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America and Mitchell Lodge 85 AF-AM of Pinckneyville.
Survivors include his wife Roberta of Pinckneyville; three daughters, Patricia A. Place and husband Gene of Pinckneyville, Shirley Y. Carson and husband JOhn of Brentwood, Calif. and Betty J. Presswood of Pinckneyville; a sister, Hazel Miller of Florissant, Mo.; six grandchildren, Londa Campbell and husband John, Tim Place and wife Lori, Amy Place, Paige Brewer and husband Tom, Joy Ramsey and husband Fred and Patti Peterson and husband Rob and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Leonard, Arthur, Albert and one in infancy and three sisters, Bessie Buckner, Myrna Buckner and Elizabeth Trefts.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 24 in the First Apostolic Church in Pinckneyville at 11 a.m. with Pastor Leonard Glover officiating. Interment was in Mueller Hill cemetery at Pinckneyville.
Visitation was held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 to 10:30 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Pinckneyville Hospital Skilled Care Unit.
Raymond Rath
Raymond Rath, 72, of Vergennes, passed away Monday, March 26, 2001 at 6:35 a.m. in the Pinckneyville Skilled Care Unit.
Mr. Rath had been a Coal Miner at Consol 4 and a farmer. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ. He was a member of DuQuoin Mason Lodge 234, Ainad Shriner Temple, Scottish Rite and the UMWA. He was a Vergennes Road Commissioner for many years and he served on the Parrish cemetery Board and the Vergennes Grade School Board.
Mr. Rath was born July 29, 1928 at Vergennes, the son of John and Bessie Bell (Wisely) Rath. He married
Mary Ragland on September 4, 1948 at DuQuoin.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Rath of Vergennes; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Steven Huelsmann of Pinckneyville; sister, Cora Heumann of Evansville, Ind.; granddaughter, Lee Ann Moody of Pinckneyville and great-grandchildren, Brandon, Katie and Allie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ray Arthur Rath and one sister, Dorothy Fildes.
Funeral services were Wednesday March 28 at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Kevin Weaver officiating. Interment was in Parrish cemetery at Vergennes.
Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time of services.

Alburnes Jackson
Alburnes Jackson, 90, of DuQuoin, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at Marshall Browning Hospital.
Mrs. Jackson had been a Floral Designer at Erwins. She was a member of First Christian Church.
She was born May 31, 1910 at Tamaroa, the daughter of Howard and Mary (Lemmons) Sronce. She married
George Jackson on December 1, 1934 at DuQuoin and he preceded her in death on May 6, 1995.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Roberta Jackson of Pinckneyville and Steve and Kaye Jackson of Sparta; two daughters and a son-in-law, Iva Mae Milligan of DuQuoin and Jean Ann and Jim Winters of Murphysboro; one sister, Leona Rainwater of DuQuoin; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers.
Funeral services were Thursday, January 11 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Ted Clark officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.
Friends called Thursday from 9 a.m. until time of services.

Paul Glen McCormick
Paul Glen McCormick, 91, of DuQuoin, passed away at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2001 at his home. Paul worked in the southern Illinois coal mines for 42 years, both underground and surface mines, and was a member of the State Mine Rescue Team for over 20 years, the last eight of which he was a team captain. After retiring from the coal mines, he served as Superintendent of the DuQuoin Mine Rescue Station for eight years from April 1, 1972 to March 31, 1980.
Paul joined the DuQuoin Fire Department in 1958 as a volunteer and stayed on for 36 years. Having served as a volunteer police officer for DuQuoin as well as a Special Deputy for the Perry County Sheriff. Paul was also a former member of the DuQuoin Masonic Lodge, Perry County Shriners and Ainad Shrine of East St. Louis. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of DuQuoin.
Paul was born November 25, 1909 at Herrin, the son of Ephraim and Lizzie (Reed) McCormick. He married
Edna Opal Teel on June 4, 1931 at DuQuoin, she passed away August 28, 1995.
He is survived by five daughters- and sons-in-law- Betty and Gene Elders, Faye and Fred Schobert and Pamela and Mike Oliver all of DuQuoin, Pauline and Rev. Jon Olinger of Princeton and Linda and Ronald Sherman of Tamaroa; 12 grandchildren- Della Hoffman and Paul Jenkins of Carbondale, Dan (Susan) Fulk and Dianna Emling of DuQuoin, Dixie Sronce of Paducah, Ky., Jon Michael (Teresa) Olinger of Magnolia, Paula Hand of Princeton, Aaron (Stephanie) Sherman of Salem, Marcy (Lee) Swallows of Hazelwood, Mo., Matthew Schobert of Waco, Tex., Christine Schobert of Milwaukee, Wis. and Adam Jenkins of Belleville, four step grandchildren- Deb (DeWitt) Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah, Mike (Vickie) Elders of Goreville, Patrick (Misty) Oliver of Little Rock, Ark. and Amanda (Mike) Hargis of DuQuoin, 17 great grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers E.F. "Huck" McCormick of Florida, Everett McCormick of Maryland and one sister- Lena McCormick of DuQuoin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a sister Cleo, and three brothers- Clarence, Curtis "Tom" and Ernest.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, March 26 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Pastor Steve Shaw officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 25 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.
