Phenebell Ballard
Phenebell Ballard, 90, of Elkville, passed away at 7:07 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001 at the Coulterville Care Center in Coulterville.

Phenebell was a homemaker and a member of the Elkville United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Elkville Women's Club and the Eastern Star.

She was born January 7, 1911 at Herrin, the daughter of Phillip K. and Minnie (Kiegley) Casteel. She married Jesse Ballard on November 4, 1933 at Belleville. He passed away August 18, 1995.

She is survived by a daughter- DeAnn Buckner and husband Cliff of Sparta, two grandsons- Scott Buckner and wife Stacey of Sparta and Brent Buckner and wife Melissa of Glen Carbon and one great-grandson- Trevor Buckner of Sparta.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers- Robert and Loren Casteel.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Tom Corum officiating.

Friends called from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home.

Interment was in the Elkville cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the Elkville United Methodist Church.

Theodore L. Bass
Theodore "Ted' L. Bass, age 60, of 7079 White Walnut Rd., Pinckneyville, passed away Saturday evening, April 7, 2001 at 6:47 p.m. in Pinckneyville Community Hospital.

Ted was born April 29, 1940 in Cutler, the son of Benton and Zella (Treadway) Bass. He was united in marriage December 22, 1979 to Rose Heiple in the Winkle Baptist Church and she survives.

Ted was a retired Boilermaker from Local #363, farmed and was the owner of Bass' Game Bird Hunting Preserve north of Pinckneyville. Ted was a member of the Pyramid Golden goblers of Pinckneyville, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation-Shawnee Chapter, a Mason and a lifelong resident of the Pinckneyville area.

Ted is survived by his wife, Rose of Pinckneyville; mother, Zella Bass Boyd also of Pinckneyville; one son, Douglas Allen Bass of DuQuoin; two daughters, Angela Dawn Bass and Jennifer Kay Heiple, both of DuQuoin; two sisters, Patsy Shute and her husband Jeff of Pinckneyville and Phyllis Leininger of Toluca; four grandchildren, Jesse Storm Griffiths, Brandon Michael Bass, Teri Jo Bass and Laci Dawn Bass. He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Benton Bass.

Funeral services were Wednesday, April 11 at 11 a.m. at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville with Rev. Rob Mathis officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.

Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. and again on the day of services from 8 to 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to the Pyramid Golden Goblers of Pinckneyville or the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation-Shawnee Chapter.

Leroy Leslie Bigham
Leroy Leslie Bigham, age 81, of Pinckneyville, departed this life Thursday, April 26, 2001 at 12:11 p.m. in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.

Leroy was born in Pinckneyville on July 18, 1919, the son of Elmer and Bertha (Becker) Bigham. He married Ethel Williamson on February 5, 1949 and she survives. During his lifetime, he was an electrician, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 702, served with the U.S. Army During World War II and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pinckneyville.

Survivors include his wife: Ethel of Pinckneyville, daughter: Wanda Schroeder and her husband, Donald, of New Athens, daughter-in-law: Sheryl Davis of Leesburg, Fla., three brothers, Russell Bigham and his wife, Helen, of Pinckneyville, Glen Bigham and his wife, Thelma, and Gerald Bigham and his wife, Marietta, all of Granite City, Ill., two sisters, Lois Jenkel of Pinckneyville and Carolyn Jewel and her husband, Mike, of Belleville and three grandsons: Edward, Gregory and Kevin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son: Jack Davis, a grandson: Kenneth Davis, two brothers: Elmer Eugene Bigham and Elvis Bigham and four sisters: Velma Hopp, Opal Bigham, Rebecca Lynch and Irene Schmidt.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 30 at 10 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Tom Hobson officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery, Pinckneyville.

Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Monday from 8 to 8:30 a.m. then at the church until services.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church.

Becky J. Bledsoe
Becky J. Bledsoe, 70, of Fairfield, passed away at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at the Fairfield Memorial Hospital.

Becky was a homemaker and a Methodist.

she was born July 13, 1930 at Tamaroa, the daughter of William and Isabell (O'Keefe) Kearbey. She married Donald Williams. He was killed in action in Korea.

She is survived by a daughter- Jonnie Kay White of Jeff, Ill., a brother- John Kearbey of DuQuoin, three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother- Kay Marlow.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 20 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Jerry Dunn officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Interment was in the Paradise cemetery.

Bob C. Clark
Bob C. "Frosty' Clark, age 74, of Pinckneyville, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at 2:57 p.m. in Pinckneyville Community Hospital.

Bob was born in Pinckneyville on May 11, 1926, the son of Howard William and Ruth (Craig) Clark. he married Brooksie Snoddy on November 18, 1950 in Piggott, Arkansas and she survives. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Bob worked for Consolidated Coal Company as a coal miner. He was a member of the UMWA Local 9721 and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife Brooksie of Pinckneyville; a son, Bob C. Clark Jr. and wife Pam of Pinckneyville; a daughter, Cynthia R. Heape and husband Kenneth of Tamaroa; a son, Randal B. Clark and wife Sherri of Windsor, Co; a daughter, Shannon D. Brown and husband David of Morton, Ill; a brother, Howard M. Clark of DuQuoin; 12 grandchildren, Jason Clark, Carrie Witbracht, Justin Clark, Katie Clark, Brooke Fox, Amanda Dearmond, Elizabeth Heape, Lindsey Heape, Tara Clark, Breana Clark, Alissa Clark and Connor Brown and four great-grandchildren, Macie Clark, Seth Witbracht, Hunter Dinkins and Max Fox.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister in infancy.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 17 at the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville at 10 a.m. with Rev. James Bush officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery in Pinckneyville.

Visitation was held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Friday, March 16 from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 to 9 a.m. then at the church until time of services.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hear Fund or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation at Cardinal Glennon.

Mildred O. Boyles
Mildred O. Boyles, 87, of Tamaroa, passed away at 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.

Mildred was a homemaker and a member of the Tamaroa Baptist Church. She had been a 40-year member of the Rebekah Lodge.

She was born December 29, 1913 at Pinckneyville, the daughter of Leonard and Magdalena (Keller) Thompson. She married Mannie Boyles on May 22, 1940 at Tamaroa. He passed away March 30, 1988.

She is survived by a daughter- Lena McConnell of West Frankfort, two grandchildren- Candy Williamson and husband Jim, Phillip McConnell and wife Barbara and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, two sisters, three brothers and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 26 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Jerry Whittington officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.

Interment was in the Tamaroa cemetery.

Alta Elenora Brown
Alta Elenora Brown, 87, of DuQuoin, passed away at 7:20 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001 at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.

Alta has been a supervisor of cafeteria's for Woolworth Co. for 36 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of DuQUoin, She was a member of the DuQuoin Eastern Star.

She was born March 15, 1914 in Perry County, the daughter of Charles O. and Sarah Jane (Brock) Hargett. She married Lee William Brown on August 7, 1948 at St. Louis, Mo. He passed away June 22, 1987.

She is survived by a brother, Charles Harget and wife Mary of DuQuoin; nephews, Charles Martie and Edward Martie, nieces, Shirley Martie and Jetta Rae Oberos and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 10 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Friends may make memorials to the First Baptist Church.

Carolyn Sue Gearhart
Carolyn Sue (Bossle) Gearhart, 52, of Pomona, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2001 at 10 p.m. at her home.

Mrs. Gearhart worked in the Billing Department at Rural Health in Anna, Ill. She was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, DuQuoin.

She was born November 5, 1948 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Walter Lyle and Alberta Weis Bossle. She married Edward "Jack' Gearhart and he preceded her in death on January 28, 2001.

Surviving are her daughter, Jacqueline Suzette Gearhart of Anna; son, Monte Shawn Gearhart of Murphysboro; one grandson, Adam Blake Gearhart of Murphysboro and two sisters, June Davison of Loxley, Alabama and Valerie Cobin of Dowell.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Funeral services were Wednesday, March 7 at 11 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home in Alto Pass, Ill. with Rev. Carl Dillow officiating.

Interment was in Alto Pass cemetery.

Friends called Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home in Alto Pass.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. 1110 N. Johnson Marion, IL.

Viola Ceglenske
Mrs. Viola Ceglenske of Nashville, departed this life at the Washington County Hospital in Nashville, Ill. on Monday, April 9, 2001 at 3:30 p.m. She had attained the age of 89 years, two months and 17 days.

Mrs. Ceglenske was born in St. Louis, Mo. on January 22, 1912, the daughter of Charles L. and Eva (Cult) Crabill. she was united in marriage to Fred H. chapman and he preceded her in death. She later married Anthony J. Ceglenske at Radom on August 10, 1964 and he preceded her in death on July 30, 1990.

Viola was a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and served as an elementary and high school teacher in Nashville for many years. At the time of her retirement, she was the Librarian for the Nashville Community High School. Viola also was a music teacher and served as church organist and later was the organist at the Friendship Manor Health Care Center in Nashville for weekend services that were held there. mrs. Ceglenske was a member of St. Ann Catholic church of Nashville and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court #2201.

Left to mourn her passing are four children, Bonnie Dunlap and husband Gene of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Dr. Herbert Chapman and wife Tirzah of Pinckneyville, Diana Pieske and husband robert of St. Louis, Mo. and mary Kay Moe and husband Gilbert of Palm Desert, Calif.; a niece, Janet Hammer and husband Peter of Emerald Isle, N. Carolina; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and other relations and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Fred Chapman and Anthony Ceglenske and a brother, Hugh Crabill.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Ann Catholic Church in Nashville on Wednesday, April 11 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Paul Wienhoff officiating. Interment was in St. Michael's Catholic cemetery at Radom.

Friends called at St. Ann Catholic Church of Nashville on Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Should friends desire, Mass offerings or memorials may be made to the St. Ann Catholic Church.

Campagna Funeral Home of Nashville was in charge of arrangements.

John D. Crain
John D. Crain, age 83, Caseyville, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at 2:01 a.m. in the Veterans Administration Center, Marion.

John was born in Cambria on February 23, 1918, the son of Grover C. and Esther (Brandon) Crain. He married Eileen Bumann on February 23, 1938 in Pinckneyville and she preceded him in death on May 6, 1990. He was a mechanic at Broadway Ford, St. Louis, Mo., a member of United Methodist Church, Caseyville, and a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army.

Survivors include son, Keith Crain and wife Joyce of Marine, Ill., two brothers, Denzil Crain and his wife, Charlotte, of Baldwin, Ill., and Dennis Crain, and his wife, Bonnie of Phoenix, Ariz., three sisters, Belva Birkner of Pinckneyville, Loveda "Jean' Robinson of Pinckneyville and Roma Blaise, and her husband, Harold of DuQuoin, seven grandchildren, Terry Ryder, Susan Ward, Kathy Hollen, Lisa Gjerswald, Christina Becker, John Crain and Brian Crain and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son, Jack L. Crain and a great-grandson, Brennan Kutz.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m. in the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, with Bro. Rob Mathis officiating. Interment was in the Bethel cemetery, Swanwick.

Friends called at the Pyatt-harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, on Friday, April 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. until services.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Veterans Administration.

Clyde Terry
Clyde Terry, 88, of DuQuoin, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at 9:15 p.m. in Fair View Nursing Center in DuQuoin.

Mr. Terry had been a welder at Turco and was of the Baptist faith. He was born June 26, 1912 at Cambria, the son of Hansel and Carrie (Dillinger) Terry. He married Velma Conner on January 17, 1942 at Pinckneyville.

Surviving are his wife, Velma Terry of DuQuoin; sister-in-law, Lorene Jackson and husband Harry of Creal Springs; brother-in-law, Harley Conner and wife Eva of DuQuoin and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 24 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Silas Morgan officiating. Interment was in Old DuQuoin cemetery.

Visitation was at Neal-McClure Funeral Home Friday, March 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until time of service.

Robert Benjamin Hill
Robert Benjamin "Ben' Hill, 62, of DuQuoin, passed away at 5:50 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2001 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion.

Ben had been an employment service representative for the Illinois Employment Security and had worked for Freeman Coal Co. He was a member of the Church of Christ of DuQuoin. He wa a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a counter-intelligence agent. He was one of the founding fathers of Five Star Industries in DuQuoin. He had served as president of the DuQuoin Khoury League. He was an avid DuQuoin Sports Fan. He had served as a republican precinct committeeman. He was a member of the DuQuoin American Legion and was an Am Vet member. He was a graduate of Arkansas State University.

He was born September 8, 1938 at DuQuoin, the son of William Clarence and Madge Opal (Halstead) Hill. He married Loretta Ann Davis on August 26, 1966 at Bay, Arkansas and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of DuQuoin; four daughters, Angela Beth Weathers and husband James Edward of Ft. Campbell, Ky., Susan Emily Hill of Peoria, Laura Jo Hill of Nashville, Tenn. and Brooke Ann Hill of DuQuoin; one brother, Dwight Hill and wife Sandra of DuQuoin and one sister, Vivian Gross of DuQuoin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services were at 10 a.mm. Wednesday, March 21 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Bro. Wayne Dinkins and Bro. Gordon Cobb officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home.

Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at DuQuoin.
