Eugene A. “Red” Hopp -
Eugene A. “Red” Hopp, age 58, of Pinckneyville, died in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale on Sunday, January 31, 1999 at 5:16 p.m.
Red was born April 12, 1940, the son of Charles A. and Dorothy (Owens) Hopp. He married Mary Ellen Ledendecker in 1962 and they had three children. He later married Teresa (Piotrowski) Malawy in August of 1980 in Murphysboro. Eugene served in the US Army as a Specialist 4 during the onset of the Vietnam Conflict and he worked for over 23 years for the Consolidated Coal Company Burning Star #4 as a mechanic where he was a member of the UMWA. He also owned and operated Gene’s Repair and Machine Shop in Pinckneyville.
Survivors include his father, Charles Allen Hopp of Pinckneyville; his wife, Teresa Hopp of Pinckneyville; three children, a son, Darren Hopp, wife Laura and their daughter Brittany of Streamwood; two daughters, Donna Tripp of Seminole, FL and Dr. Debra Hopp of Cape Coral, FL and their mother Mary Ellen Hopp also of Cape Coral, FL; two step-daughters, Gina Rae (Malawy) Lawless, husband Bill and their daughter Abigail Rosemary of Pinckneyville and Melinda (Malawy) Trader, husband Kevin and their daughter Mackenzie Raye, all of Scheller.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his mother and one son, Stephen.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 5, 1999 at the Pyatt Funeral Home in Pinckneyville at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Tim McIntyre officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill Cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Memorials may be made to the United Scleroderma Foundation.
The family requests that everyone consider signing their organ donor cards.

Florence Mildred Pursell
Florence Mildred Pursell, age 86, of Pinckneyville, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at 5:35 p.m. in her home.
Florence was born in DuQuoin on November 13, 1912, the daughter of Edgar and Ida Maye (Fenton) Kelley. She married Albert W. Pursell on October 31, 1934 in Anna and he preceded her in death on October 11, 1996. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville.
Survivors include one son, Albert E. Pursell and wife Ferol of Waseca, MN; one daughter, Janice Eckols and husband Don of Pinckneyville; one brother, William E. Kelley and wife Kathleen of DuQuoin; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 20 at 1:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church with Reverend James Bush officiating.
Interment was in the Mueller Hill Cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or the Mary Kuykendall Carpenter Heart Fund.

George R. Blair -
George R. Blair, age 90, of Cutler, died in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit on Thursday, February 11 at 3:18 p.m.
George was born on April 2, 1908 in Perry County, the son of William R. and Martha J. (Robb) Blair. He married Floy D. Dempsey on October 28, 1933 in Jackson, MO and she preceded him in death on January 30, 1998. George worked as a Mechanic and Farmer in the Cutler area and was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Cutler.
Survivors include one son, George Robert Blair and wife Brenda of Powhatan, VA; two daughters, Inez Jane Pryer and husband Earl of Cutler and Cynthia Simmons and Burnell of Manteno; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents; three sisters, Helen Montieth, Marquarite Brown and Ruth Blair and two brothers, Walter R. Blair and William Harvey Blair.
Funeral services were held on Monday, February 15, 1999 at the Pyatt Funeral Home in Pinckneyville at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Tim Blair officiating. Interment was in the Cutler Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Mary Kuykendall Carpenter Heart Fund.

Helen D. Marshalek -
Helen D. Marshalek, 91, of Tamaroa, passed away at 6:55 a.m. Thursday, February 4, 1999 at the Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Nashville.
Helen was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tamaroa.
She was born September 3, 1907 at Radom, the daughter of Joe and Rose (Malinowski) Krzycki. She married Nicholas F. Marshalek on May 17, 1927 at Radom. He preceded her in death on August 30, 1986.
She is survived by two daughters, Florence Smith of Wildwood, MO and Joan Long of Conway, AR; one brother, Edwin Wachowski of Radom; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Raymond and three sisters.
Funeral services were Saturday, February 6, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tamaroa with Fr. Daniel Jurek officiating.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Ida Blakely -
Ida Blakely, 95, of Marion, formerly of Tamaroa, passed away Friday February 5, 1999 in Herrin Hospital.
Mrs. Blakely was a homemaker and a member of Paradise Baptist Church. She belonged to the Women’s Missionary Union and Royal Neighbors of America.
She was born December 22, 1903 in Tamaroa, the daughter of William and Lizetta (Meier) Krone, Sr. She married William Riley Blakely on March 3, 1934 in East St. Louis. He preceded her in death on November 17, 1988.
Survivors include one son, Robert Blakely of Marion and three grandchildren, Laurie Blakely of Carbondale, Patty Irwin of Simpson, IL and Scott Blakely of Orlando, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were Thursday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. M. Shaw DeMent officiating.
Interment was in Paradise Baptist Cemetery in Tamaroa.
Memorials may be made to Paradise Baptist Cemetery.

Jimmy Ray “Whimpy” Gray -
Jimmy Ray “Whimpy” Gray, 65, of Percy, formerly of Elkville, passed away at 6:20 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 1999 at Herrin Hospital.
Jimmy was a retired long-distance trucker working for J.B. Hunt, Gilster Mary Lee, Siefert’s Trucking of DuQuoin and Yates Farm of Elkville.
He was a Protestant and a member of the North American Hunting Club.
He was born September 18, 1933 at Elkville, the son of Arthur and Gertrude (Ponder) Gray.
He is survived by two sons, Kevin of Benton and Jimmy of Texas; a very dear friend, Maude Deppi of Percy; two brothers, Robert Gray of DuQuoin and Bill Gray of Hartford, IL; five sisters, Marjorie Ertel of Citrus Heights, CA, Mildred Barwick of Elkville, Ilene Furlow of Christopher, Ruth Ertel of Magna, UT and Rose Tow of Elkville and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Jerry Aken officiating.
Interment was in the Elkville Cemetery.

Jewell R. Randolph -
Jewell R. Randolph, was born April 25, 1913 and died February 14, 1999 at the age of 83.
There was a private funeral service for family members only. Interment followed at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.

James Smith -
James Smith, 74, of Nashville, passed away on Monday, February 22, 1999 at his residence.
He was born on May 6, 1924 in Nashville, the son of Patrick and Estelle (Poirot) Smith. He was united in marriage on November 18, 1950 at St. Mary Magdalene Church to Nedra (Keller) Smith and she preceded him in death in April of 1988.
He was a lifetime resident of Washington County and was a self employed farmer and of the Catholic faith.
He is survived by two sons, Richard Smith and wife Lynelle of Batavia and Charles E. Smith and wife Sue of Aurora; three daughters, Geneva Powers and husband Carl of Venedy, Cathy Albers and husband Randy and Karen Mueller and husband K.C., all of Nashville; three brothers, Severn Smith and wife Leona, Robert Smith and wife Katherine, all of Pinckneyville, and Patrick Smith and wife Lorraine of St. Louis, MO; one sister, Virginia Matecki and husband Paul of St. Louis, MO; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Eugene, Bernard and Wilfred and three sisters, Mary Wesslen, Pauline Loos and Annabell Smith in infancy.
Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, February 25, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Todds Mill with Father James Van Oss officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice and will be received at the funeral home.
