Anna Popp
Anna Popp, 93, of Pacific, Mo., formerly of Dowell, passed away at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at the Pacific Care Center in Pacific, Mo.
Anna was a homemaker and of the Protestant faith.
She was born April 16, 1907 at Winburne, Penn., the daughter of Paul and Mary (Corban) Maksin. She married
George Popp on March 6, 1924 at Hammond, Ind. and he passed away July 8, 1949.
She is survived by one daughter, Irene Perry and husband Kermit of Union, Mo.; two brothers, George Maksin of Dowell and Steve Maksin of Colorado; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
She was the daughter-in-law of the late Mike and Esther Popp.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, George Popp; daughter, Vera Popp; three brothers, Mike Maksin, Paul Maksin and John Maksin and two sisters, Sue Robinson and Mary Challet.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Friday, April 6 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Steve Bareis officiating.
Friends called from Noon until 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery at DuQuoin.
Gustav Levi Rehmus
Gustav Levi Rehmus, 80, a resident of Scheller, Ill. entered rest on April 9, 2001 at his home.
Born in rural Scheller on August 19, 1920, he was the son of William and Lottie Rehmus. He was united in marriage to Frances Mydler of DuBois on August 19, 1944.
He was a farmer and a retired coal miner. A memorial service was held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, DuQuoin with Minister Karry Majors officiating.
Newell Henson Jr.
Newell Henson Jr., 70, of DuQuoin, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2001 at 3:50 a.m. in Marshall Browning Hospital.
Mr. Henson was a Tool & Dye Maker.
He was born July 14, 1930 at DuQuoin, the son of Newell Henson Sr. and Madge Mary Bishop. He married
Gladys Elma Floyd in Peoria and she preceded him in death on December 25, 1978.
Surviving are one son, Charles Ray Henson of Texas; two daughters, Sue Wright of Dowell and Debbie Little of DuQuoin; one step-daughter, Gladys Jean Arell of Los Angeles, Calif.; his mother, Madge Roberts of DuQuoin; eight grandchildren, Jeannie Arell, Michelle Griffin, Maria Martinez, Amy Henson, Angie Henson, Joey Little, James Wright and Christopher Henson and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and wife.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Kenny Stewart officiating. Mr. Henson asked to be cremated after the services. Burial was at a later date in IOOF cemetery at DuQuoin.
Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home Saturday from 12 p.m. until time of service.
Timothy Logan Shepard
Timothy Logan Shepard, infant son of Timothy and Erica Mann Shepard, was born at 10:35 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2001 and passed away at 11:25 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Timothy is survived by his parents Timothy W. and Erica L. (Mann) Shepard of DuQuoin, a brother-Brendon of DuQuoin, Maternal Grandparents- Ron and Donna Mann of DuQuoin, Maternal Great Grandparents- Rudolph and Ella Kellerman of Pinckneyville, Paternal Grandparents- Wayne and Billie Jo Shepard of DuQuoin, Paternal Great Grandparents- Bill and Joan Carlock of DuQuoin, Marie Shepard of Sunfield, Aunts and Uncles.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 24 at the Sacred Heart cemetery at DuQuoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
The Searby Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery.
Everett E. Jenkel
Everett E. "Blue' Jenkel, age 53, of Pinckneyville, died in the Calvin Johnson Care Center in Belleville on Monday, April 16, 2001 at 9:05 a.m.
Blue was born in Pinckneyville on April 1, 1948, the son of Wilson S. and Evelyn L. (Fisher) Jenkel. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked as an independent contractor in the Pinckneyville area. Blue was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Pinckneyville and the Pinckneyville Moose Lodge #930.
He is survived by three brothers, Jack D. Jenkel and wife Tina of Pinckneyville, James C. Jenkel and wife Fran of Marissa and Bobby J. Jenkel and wife Pam of DuQuoin and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one nephew, J.D. Jenkel and a niece, April M. Jenkel.
Funeral services were held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Thursday, April 19 at 11 a.m. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Visitation was held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Wednesday from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 8 am. until services. Memorials may be made to the J.D. Jenkel Scholarship Fund c/o Murphy-Wall State Bank, Pinckneyville.
Lottie Mae Sroka
Lottie Mae Sroka, 78, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at home.
Per Lottie's request, private graveside services were held on Friday, April 13, 2001 with Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville handling the arrangements. Pastor Greg Maize officiated at the St. Bruno Catholic cemetery.
Lottie was born on August 30, 1922 in Pinckneyville, the youngest child of Charles and Minnie (Loos) Heisner.
She married
Joe Sroka on March 2, 1946 in Pinckneyville. They have remained devoted partners in this life for 55 years.
To this union four children were born, all survive: Chuck Sroka and wife Janet of Pinckneyville; Fran Dunn and husband Steve of St. Charles, Mo.; Joan Sroka of DuQuoin and Patty Louis and husband Nicky of Pinckneyville. six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive: Sherry Mohr and husband Ken, children Olivia and Audrey of Columbia; Kevin Dunn and wife Martie, children Stephanie and Erica of Jefferson City, Mo.; Joel Louis and wife Jeana, children Jacob and Jayla of Herrin; Keith Dunn and wife Milissa, son Joseph of St. Charles, Mo.; Wes Sroka and wife Sherri, daughter Julian of Sparta and Jason Louis of Carbondale. She is also survived by her brother, William Heisner and wife Erla of Pinckneyville.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Marie Wildermuth.
Lottie retired from the Pinckneyville Community Hospital after 31 years of service.
She was a member of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
Memorials may be made to the Pinckneyville Community High School Panther Basketball Program in care of Don Warkins at the High School.
Naomi Ruth Swayne
Naomi Ruth Swayne, 70, of DuQuoin, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Ruth was a homemaker.
She was born August 28, 1930 at hallidayboro, the daughter of Stanley and Mabel E. (Holloran) Higgins. She married
George A. Swayne on February 28, 1955 at Murphysboro. He died march 1, 1995.
She is survived by five children- Michael Joe King of DuQuoin, Pamela King Scott of Wisconsin, Debra Cook, Richard Swayne of wisconsin, Patricia Galloway of DuQuoin, two brothers-Raymond e. Higgins of Creal Springs, Edward Higgins of Hallidayboro, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren .
At her request, cremation services were held.
A graveside service was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25 at the IOOF cemetery in DuQuoin with Rev. Charles Smith officiating.
The Searby Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.
Interment was in the IOOF cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House.
Blanche Emily Jones
Blanche Emily Jones, age 99, born March 19, 1902, traveled to home to be with her Lord on April 18, 2000.
Blanche was born and raised in Williamson County, Ill. She married
Herbert Lee Jones on May 11, 1924. Blanche was the proud mother of 11 children and made her home in Pinckneyville where she worked as a housewife, mother and restaurant cook.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, her beloved husband and six of her 11 children.
At last running count, Blanche sustained a family tree containing 11 children, 32 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren and 40 great-great-grandchildren.
She is survived by five of her 11 children, Margurite Hardin of Pinckneyville, Ivanell Sommers of Baldwin, Barbara Porter of Pinckneyville, Carrie Morgan and husband, Clifford of Ava and Curtis Jones and wife, Shirley Gail of Pinckneyville.
Blanche was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, and served on sever women's auxiliary boards within her community.
She was an avid music lover and could often be seen dancing at public functions. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
All friends and family were invited to celebrate her life and attend visitation at Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, on Friday, April 20 from 6 until 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. until services.
Funeral services were held at Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m. Burial followed at Mueller Hill cemetery, Pinckneyville.
Memorials may be made to the Pinckneyville Park Playground Project.
Carolyn M. Wohlwend
Carolyn M. Wohlwend, 49, of DuQuoin, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Sunday, May 20, 2001 at her residence.
Carolyn had worked as a police and fire dispatcher for Central Dispatch for 11 years and had worked for the Franklin County EMS. She was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in DuQuoin.
She was born September 21, 1951 at Cairo, the daughter of B.C. and Georgia (Collins) Gale. She married
Leonard Wohlwend on June 20, 1971 at DuQuoin and he survives of DuQuoin.
She is also survived by two sons, Leonard Wohlwend Jr. and John A. Wohlwend, both of DuQuoin; her mother, Georgia Gale of Tamaroa; two brothers, David C. Gale of Ft. Louden, Tenn. and Dave Joe Gale of Tamaroa.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 22 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Kevin Weaver officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.
Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin

Joseph Raymond Kowalski
Joseph Raymond Kowalski, 83, of Scheller, passed away at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 3, 2001 at his residence.
Joseph was a retired farmer and had been a livestock and limestone trucker. He had also been a school bus driver for the Waltonville School. He was a Bald Hill Township Supervisor. He was a member of the St. Barbara Catholic Church at Scheller.
He was born March 8, 1918 at Scheller, the son of John and Pauline (Zielinski) Kowalski. He married
Hedwig R. Betlejewski on August 20, 1940 at St. Barbara Church at Scheller and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Scheller, daughter- Charlotte Amos and husband Fred of Hazel Wood, Mo., two sons, Michael D. Kowalski of Radom and John Kowalski and wife Debbie of Mt. Vernon, seven granddaughters, two great grandsons and one great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Stanley, Andrew and John Kowalski, eight sisters- Anna Kuddis, Martha Millowski, Catherine Kabat, Jane Miloshewski, Cecelia Lisewski, Helen Sexton, Mary Barry and Emily Kabat.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001 at the St. Barbara Catholic Church in Scheller with Fr. Wilbert Iffert officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa. The Rosary was said at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the St. Barbara cemetery at Scheller.

Frances E. Berg
Frances E. Berg, 91, of DuQuoin, passed away at 8:55 a.m. Monday, May 21, 2001 at her residence.
Frances was a homemaker and spent her life caring for and watching her grandchildren grow up. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of DuQuoin.
She was born May 27, 1909 at Taylorville, the daughter of Gerald E. and Mattie L. (Zimmerman) McCurdy. She married
Anton S. Berg on May 27, 1930 at DuQuoin and he survives.
She is survived by her husband of DuQuoin; one daughter, Jacqueline Pierce of DuQuoin; two granddaughters, Deborah Eaves of DuQuoin and Penni Kjellesvik of Herrin; two great granddaughters, Gretchen James of DuQuoin and Heather Kjellesvik of Herrin; one great grandson, Carry Bailey of DuQuoin and one great great grandson, Dawson James of DuQuoin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Marie Higgins, Berna Plummer, Eulah Schillian and Dorothy Jones and one brother, Darrold McCurdy.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 23 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating.
Friends called from 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.
Interment was in Sacred Heart cemetery at DuQuoin.

Thompson W. Schutz
Thompson W. Schutz, husband of Barbara Hayes, an architect and resident of Aspen, passed away May 29. He was born on January 31, 1952 to Paul and Helen Schutz in Summit, New Jersey. Before moving to Aspen he lived in Dallas, Texas for 25 years and was principal and co-founder of the architectural firm Three Architecture, Inc. He was the owner and president of Philos International Ltd., an architectural firm based in Aspen.
Thom was known by all for his spirit and wonderful zest for life. he enjoyed skiing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, riding his dirt bike, soccer, hockey, golf and tennis and he was enthusiastic and proficient in all of the above.
He was an extremely talented architect and artist and was respected and loved by everyone he touched.
He is survived by his adoring wife, Barbara Hayes Schutz and twin sons, Jordan and Nicholas of Aspen; Kristin, Erin and Westin Schutz of Pottsboro, Texas; brothers, Robert of Manchester, Mass., Peter of Ft. Smith, Ark., and Paul Benjamin of Lucca, Italy; sister, Stephanie Huber of Bowie, Md. and cousin Patty Nichols of San Antonio, Texas. His parents preceded him in death.
Thom passed away after a brave and hard-fought battle with cancer and through it all kept his positive and optimistic outlook on life. He was an inspiration to all who knew him and he will be sorely missed. He was a truly unique individual and will live on through his children and in the memories that he created in the lives of those he loved and touched.
A memorial service and celebration of Thom's life was planned for June 8 at 3 p.m. at the Aspen Chapel, 0077 Meadowood Rd. in Aspen. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Thom to the Cure for Lymphoma Foundation, 215 Lexington Ave., New York, NY 10016 or to the Thompson W. Schutz Fund at Community Bank, 210 N. Mill St., Aspen, CO 81611 for the benefit and support of his children.
