Norma Maxine Stanley
Norma Maxine Stanley, 78, of DuQuoin, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at 5:20 p.m. at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.

Mrs. Stanley was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She was born July 27, 1922 at Freeburg, the daughter of David "Earl' and Sarah (Reese) Slusher. She married Floren Gerald Stanley on December 24, 1949 at Pinckneyville and he preceded her in death on December 14, 1993.

Surviving are three sons, Gerald Neville of Lisle, Tom Neville of Wheeling and Dean Stanley of Tamaroa; one daughter, Carolyn Kurtz of Madison, Wisc.; one step-daughter, Mary Ann Wise of Evansville, Ind.; two brothers, Delmar Slusher of Goodfield and Nelson Slusher of Tremont; two sisters, Thelma Kujawa of Pinckneyville and Margaret Guenther of East Peoria; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, David; four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were Sunday, June 3 at 1 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating. Interment was in Old DuQuoin cemetery.

Friends called Neal-McClure Funeral Home Saturday, June 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. until time of service.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Gage Cortlan Jones
Gage Cortlan Jones, 16-day-old son of John P. and Connie Jones of DuQuoin, passed away at 2:50 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2001 at the Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Gage was born April 25, 2001 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin, the son of John P. and Connie (McGinnis) Jones.

He is survived by his parents of DuQuoin, two brothers- Chad P. Jones and Adrian A. Jones, both of DuQuoin, maternal grandparents- Sondra and Gary McGinnis of DuQuoin, paternal grandparents- Curtis and Gale Jones of Pinckneyville, Billy and Joan Hale of Valier, maternal great-grandparents- Frank and Edna Woodrome of Tamaroa, Anna McGinnis of DuQuoin.

Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 15 at the IOOF cemetery at DuQuoin with Rev. Joseph Crowe officiating.

Friends called from 1 to 2 p.m Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at DuQuoin.

Alice Rebecca Halstead
Alice Rebecca Halstead, 87, of DuQuoin, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at 2:15 p.m. at Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin.

Mrs. Halstead was a Stanley Cosmetic Representative. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Kiwanis, AARP and was very active in the Euzelian Sunday School Class.

She was born April 14, 1913 at Paradise Prairie, Ill., the daughter of Charles and Sarah M. (Neville) Harrison. she married Clyde Benjamin Halstead on August 6, 1935 at Tamaroa and he preceded her in death on August 23, 1973.

Surviving are two sons, David Lee Halstead of Centralia and Bruce Allen Halstead of DuQuoin; one brother, Leslie Harrison of Alexandria, Virginia; one sister, Gladys Holland of Zolfo Springs, Florida and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters, Arlene Stokes and Lena Terry.

Funeral services were Monday, May 7 at 10 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at DuQuoin.

Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Sunday, May 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Monday from 7:30 a.m. until time of service.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Norman M. Kimmel
Norman M. Kimmel, 86, of Plant City, Fla., formerly of DuQuoin and Elkville, passed away at 5:10 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at the Brooksville Regional Hospital in Brooksville, Fla.

Norman was a retired coal miner. he had worked at the Old Kathleen and New Kathleen mines. He was of the Catholic faith.

He was born August 15, 1914 at Elkville, the son of Leslie L. and Mary Ellen (Bennett) Kimmel. He married Lavena A. Benson on May 16, 1934 at Jonesboro. She passed away April 13, 1998.

He is survived by a son - Donald Kimmel of Brooksville, Fla.; a sister - Virginia Duffy of Elizabethtown; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 3 at the Elkville cemetery with Rev. Gerald Wright officiating.

Friends called from 12 noon until time of service Sunday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in Elkville cemetery.

Donald S. Mason
Donald S. Mason, 74, of DuQuoin, passed away at 5:50 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2001 at the St. Johns North Hospice Center in Springfield, Ill.

Donald was an architect consultant for all his professional life and retired in 1998. He served the DuQuoin community as a board member of Five Star Industries, chairman of the DuQuoin Library Board and a trustee of the United Methodist Church. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of DuQuoin and was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was born December 19, 1926 at Jacksonville, Ill, the son of Rex and Geraldine (Sayre) Mason. He married Shirley A. Gathard on December 13, 1951 at Pocohontas, Ill.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Shirley of DuQuoin, daughter and son-in-law- Melanie and Saleh Jabr of Tyler, Tex., son and daughter-in-law- Jeff and Sue Mason of DuQuoin, brother-Robert Mason of Vancouver, Wash., six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 16 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Jerry Dunn officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Friends may make memorials to the St. Johns North Hospice, 800 E. Carpenter St., Springfield, IL 62709, First United Methodist Church or the Sacred Heart School.

Stella J. Bayless
Stella J. Bayless, 92, of Greenville, formerly of Elkville and Dowell, passed away at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001 at the Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Greenville.

Stella was a homemaker and had been owner of the Elkville Restaurant. She had also been a dietary supervisor at the Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin. She had resided in Elkville for 16 years, Dowell for 74 years and two-and-a-half years in Greenville. She graduated from Elkville Grade and High Schools. She was the oldest member of the Dowell Baptist Church where she had been a Sunday school teacher and treasurer and served in many other offices and on several committees. She was a member of the DuQuoin Eastern Star and had been Worth Matron.

She was born August 12, 1908 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Raleigh and Magnolia (Rees) Fox. She married Guy E. Bayless on August 27, 1924 at Carbondale. He passed away November 16, 1976.

She is survived by a daughter- Jean Rowe and husband H.Y. of Eldorado, Arkansas; a son- Gerald Bayless and wife Lillie Jane of Greenville; a sister- Bronnes Holmberg of Elkville; a brother- Rayburn Fox of Carbondale; niece- Betty Jo King of Elkville; three grandchildren- Bayless Rowe of Eldorado, Ark., Sally Peper of Greenville and Becky Suess of Greenville; nine great-grandchildren- Michael and Benjamin Rowe, Andy, Adam, Emily and Erin Peper, Nicholas Daniel and Grant Suess.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother- Denver Fox; two sisters- Ethel Flowers and Ilah Tow.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, June 4 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Darryl Bolen officiating. Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Searby Funeral Home.

Interment was in the Elkville cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the Dowell Baptist Church.

Imogene M. Blazer Remijan
Imogene M. Blazer Remijan, 78, of Lyons, Ill. passed away on December 22, 2000 at the Hinsdale Hospital.

She was born November 18, 1922 in Decatur, the daughter of Albert and Ann (Fox) Blazer. She was raised in Du Quoin and later moved to Lyons, Ill. where she was a school crossing guard for the Village of Lyons. She was of the Protestant faith.

On July 23, 1960, she married Edward P. Remijan, and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of Lyons; five children, Lawrence (Corky) Longshore and wife Freida of Du Quoin, David W. Longshore of Du Quoin, Mrs. William (Pat) Kruzick of Pinckneyville, Gene Longshore and wife Lil of Plainfield, Ill., and Mrs. George (Sherry) Bailey of Sunfield; nine grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and two brothers.

Graveside funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, 2001 at Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin with Rev. Clover officiating. The Searby Funeral Home of Du Quoin was in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to charities or organizations of their choice.

Richard Fred Rodewald
Richard Fred Rodewald, 63, of Middletown, Rhode Island and formerly of Du Quoin, died Sunday, July 22, 2001 at Newport Hospital in Newport, R.I.

Mr. Rodewald was born in Du Quoin on July 13, 1938, the son of the late Fred Henry and Mildred Marie (House) Rodewald. He was the husband of Priscilla (Keane) Rodewald, and they were married 21 years.

Mr. Rodewald owned and operated Rodewald's Truck Repairs on Connell Highway in Newport from 1978-1983. From 1983-1985, he was an independent truck driver. From 1985-1990, he worked as a foreman for the Newport Shipyard, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve in Middletown, chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Middletown, and past commander of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a 20-year Navy veteran and served in Vietnam. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and repairing cars.

He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Keane Rodewald of Middletown, R.I.; three sons, Noel Jordan of South Attleboro, Mass., Fred Jordan of Newport, R.I., and Jon Ethan Jordan of Middletown, R.I.; five daughters, Dena Mobbs of North Attleboro, Mass., Terri Collins of Westerly, R.I., Jenny McKay of North Attleboro, Mass., Lisa Greenig of Fairfield, Iowa, and Kimberly Ackerson of Middletown, R.I.; two brothers, William Rodewald of Mattoon, Ill. and Mark Rodewald of Virginia; and five granddaughters and four grandsons. He was the brother of the late Larry Thomas Rodewald and Joyce Elaine Jordan.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, R.I. Burial with military honors was held in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial cemetery in Exeter, R.I.

Jeptha U. Place
Jeptha U. Place, age 67, of Alton, formerly of Pinckneyville, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at his residence.

Jeptha was born June 15, 1933 in Pinckneyville, the son of Herschel and Inza May (Watts) Place. He is survived by three daughters, Margaret Scholebo and husband David of Pinckneyville, Patty Scholebo and husband Jeff of Pinckneyville and Laura Smith and husband John of Alton; one brother, Herschel Place Jr.; 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James and one grandchild, Christopher Scholebo.

Funeral services were Friday, June 8 at 11 a.m. at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville with Rev. J.O. Mathenia officiating. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery in Pinckneyville.

Friends alled at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville Friday morning from 9 a.m. until services.

Earl L. Porter
Earl L. Porter, 85, of West Frankfort, passed away at 6:55 a.m. Sunday, June 10, 2001 at Franklin Skilled Care in Benton.

Mr. Porter was a retired coal miner from Old Ben. He lived in Southern Illinois all his life, except for seven years spent in Carlsbad, New Mexico. During the 1950's he owned and operated Porters Hardware in Dowell and worked in the coal mine. He retired in 1977. He was a member of the UMWA. He was of the Christian faith.

Mr. Earl Porter was born October 1, 1915 at Christopher, the son of Arthur Porter and Dona Graeff. He married Grace on February 7, 1938 in Jackson, Mo.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Porter of West Frankfort; daughter, Carolyn McCarty and husband Billy Joe of Austin, Tex.; son, Art Porter and wife Cathy of West Frankfort; grandchildren, Billy J. McCarty and wife Judi, Brian McCarty, Andrew Nicholas Porter and Natalie Porter, great grandchildren, Jessi Lynn McCarty, Tyler Andrew Porter and Carley Jayne Porter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Robert Porter in 1948.

Funeral services were Thursday, June 14 at 10 a.m. at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort with Bro. Lloyd Whittaker officiating. Interment was in Hallidayboro cemetery.

Visitation was after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Jack W. Sheehan
Jack W. Sheehan, 53, of DuQuoin, passed away at 9:21 p.m. June 25, 2001 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.

Jack was employed at Consol Burning Star #4 as a tractor operator. he was a member of the UMWA Local 1825, DuQuoin American Legion, DuQuoin VFW and was of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was born August 25, 1947 at DuQuoin, the son of Robert and Eileen (McCrary) Sheehan. He married Nancy Wilderman on January 2, 1997 at St. Louis, Mo. and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of DuQuoin; two sons, John Sheehan and wife Jennifer of Herrin, Shane Wilderman of DuQuoin; one daughter, Missy Higgins and husband Shawn of DuQuoin; his mother, Eileen Sheehan of DuQuoin; two brothers, Robert Sheehan of DuQuoin and Charles Sheehan of DuQuoin; five grandchildren and his beloved dog; Elmo.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 28 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was at the Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends may make memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Robert W. Clark
Robert W. Clark, 77, of DuQuoin, passed away Friday, June 1, 2001 at 12 p.m. at Fairview Nursing Center.

Mr. Clark had been a meat cutter for Bluebell and a grocery clerk at A & P. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

He was born June 26, 1923 at DuQuoin, the son of William and Mabel (Flauaus) Clark. He married Loretta Mae Milligan on October 17, 1948 at Pinckneyville.

Surviving are his wife, Loretta Clark of DuQuoin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Barbara Clark of Christopher and Bruce and Teresa Clark of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Leonard Rice of DuQuoin; one sister, Carlie McGuire of DuQuoin; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Greg Clark and two sisters.

Funeral services were Monday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating. Interment was in Old DuQuoin cemetery.

Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home Sunday, June 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 7:30 a.m. until time of service.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund or Alzheimer Research Foundation.
