Lillian Jane Carter
Lillian Jane Carter, 85, of DuQuoin, passed away Friday, June 22, 2001 at 1:40 p.m. at Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin.

Mrs. Carter was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was born August 17, 1915 at Pinckneyville, the daughter of Tom and Ella Mae (Freeman) Davis. She married Clyde Carter on September 6, 1932 at Pinckneyville and he preceded her in death on August 12, 1989.

Surviving are one son, Tom and wife Marcia Taylor of DuQuoin; four sisters, Lorraine Willis, Lucille Craig, Isabelle Langwith and Helen Hartel, all of Cutler; one brother, Tom Davis of Cutler; one grandson, Frank and wife Lisa Taylor and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services were Monday, May 25 at 1 p.m. at Maxton Funeral Chapel in DuQuoin with Rev. Larry G. Revelle officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends called after 9 a.m. Monday.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Perry County c/o Pinckneyville Hospital.

Carl Alva Siefert
Carl Alva Siefert, 93, DuQuoin, passed away Friday, June 29, 2001 at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.

Mr. Siefert was born June 19, 1908 to Alva and Emma (Hemmer) Siefert.

Carl is survived by one son, Thomas D. Siefert and wife Jacqueline; two daughters, Anna Louise Eichhorn and husband charles and Pamela Kay Pereira and husband Anton; eight grandchildren, Sabrina S. Miller and husband George, John T. Siefert and wife Sydne, R. Eric Siefert, David F. Eichhorn and wife Gerrie, Denise A. Swetland and husband Mike, Darby R. Mathis and husband Kerry, William C. Gross and Nancy J. Day; 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was a retired coal miner of United Electric. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church in DuQuoin and the Knights of Columbus, where he served as Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Fourth Degree.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Wellington; his parents and two brothers, Joseph Siefert and Edward Siefert. he has one surviving sister-in-law, Zelma Bookstaver.

Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart School Endowment Fund and the American Heart Association.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Monsignor Harry Jerome officiating. Interment was in Sacred Heart cemetery.

Friends called Monday morning after 8 a.m. at Maxton Funeral Chapel. The Rosary was said at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

Delinda Sue Mosley Skidmore
Delinda Sue Mosley Skidmore, 54, of Dowell, passed away at 4:35 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001 from injuries in an auto accident on Greens Market Road.

Delinda was a homemaker and a Seventh Day Adventist.

She was born July 9, 1946 at Cairo, the daughter of Charles N. and Mary Evelyn (Meyer) Mosley. She was raised by her grandparents Arthur F. and Rhoda Katherine Meyer and they preceded her in death.

She is survived by five children- William Roy Glidewell Jr. of DuQuoin, Katherinie Lorine Glidewell Henson of DuQuoin, Jason Mathew Skidmore and Nathan Eric Skidmore, both of Dowell and Nikki Sue Skidmore of DuQuoin; her mother, Mary Evelyn Foster and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.

Graveside memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 13 at the Old DuQuoin cemetery. Interment was in the Old DuQuoin cemetery.

Those attending the services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.

The Searby Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.

Linda A. Croft
Linda A. Croft, 46, of Effingham, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2001 at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Ms. Croft was a Registered Nurse and had worked at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Effingham.

She was born June 8, 1955 in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Leland and Alice (Kroeger) Croft.

Surviving are her mother, Alice Kroeger of Effingham; three brothers, Don and wife Gwen of Teutopolis, David and wife Sandy of Montrose and Dean and wife Becky of Edwardsville; four sisters, Mr.s Deborah (Gary ) Lloyd of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Barbara (Russ) Sims of Effingham, Mrs. Diane (Jeff) Having of Effingham and Darlene Myers of Effingham and one step-sister, Dr. Jeanne Marie Hartmann of Effingham.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Funeral services were Tuesday, June 12 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic church in Effingham. The body was cremated following services.

Friends calledfrom 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. A parish wake service was held Monday evening at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ivan D. George
Ivan D. George, 60, of Tamaroa, passed away at 9:50 p.m. June 19, 2001 at the Tamaroa cemetery railroad crossing when his car was struck by an Amtrack train.

Ivan was a farmer and a member of Tamaroa First Baptist Church.

Ivan was born January 10, 1941 at Tamaroa, the son of Harold and Norma (Presswood) George. He married Kathryn K. Morrow on July 2, 1960 at Tamaroa and she preceded him in death on December 8, 2000.

He is survived by his mother- Norma George of Tamaroa; four children- Greg George and wife Jane of Tamaroa, Mike George of Tamaroa, Donna Kassel and husband Kirk of O'Fallon, Patricia Wyciskalla and husband Steve of Tamaroa; two brothers- Harold (Townie) George of Tamaroa, Marvin George of DuQuoin; two sisters- Peggy Koenegstein of Tamaroa, Connie Prusacki of Tamaroa; grandchildren- Jeremy, Amy, Sidney and Kyle George, Michaela Valentine, Mason Kassel, Caleb and Katie Brasche, step-grandchildren- Robbie, Tabitha and Doug Ticer, Kasie Wyciskalla.

He was preceded in death by his father, wife, sister- Donnie Morgan, grandson- John Robert George.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 22 at the First Baptist Church in Tamaroa with Rev. Raymond Baggott officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

Interment was in the Tamaroa cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the First Baptist Church of Tamaroa.

Janeth Ruth Kocian
Janet Ruth (Greer) Kocian, of Swanwick, passed away Wednesday morning, June 27, 2001 in St. Louis University Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. at 11:48 a.m.

Janet was born in DuQuoin on June 18, 1940, the daughter of Russell J. and Carolyn M. (Bahre) Greer. She married P. William "Bill' Kocian on February 7, 1959 at the St. Paul United Methodist Church of Christ in Pinckneyville and he survives.

Janet was a homemaker and a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pinckneyville, a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ Consistory Board in Pinckneyville, a charter member of the Perry County Jail Museum, member of the Quilting Club and Swanwick Picnic Association. She was also a 4-H leader for the Willing Workers and New Horizons clubs. She was the Superintendent of Textiles for the DuQuoin State Fair Home Show.

Survivors include her husband, P. William "Bill' Kocian of Swanwick, her mother, Carolyn Greer of Swanwick; 10 children, Roxanne Tobias and husband Robert Dean II of Fairburn, Ga., Melody Martie and husband Don of Pinckneyville, Meschelle Brand and husband Roger of Pinckneyville, Edward J. Kocian and Everett Kocian, both of Swanwick, Rena Kocian, also of Swanwick, Frank and wife Tina of Rice, William Drew Kocian of Swanwick, Gretchen Kocian and Tyson Kocian, all of Swanwick; five grandchildren, William Scott Martie, Robert Dean Tobias III, Matthew Tyler Martie, Chelsea Gabrielle Kocian and Rebecca Kathleen Tobias; four brothers and sisters, Dale Greer and wife Roberta of Pinckneyville, Marion Greer and wife Barbara of Coulterville, JoAnn Parsell and husband Ronald of Coulterville and charles Greer and wife Mary of Pinckneyville. She was preceded in death by her father and one nephew, Ronald Parsell.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 30 in the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pinckneyville at 10 a.m. with Rev. Robert Edwards officiating. Interment was in the Bethel cemetery in Swanwick.

Visitation was held at the St. Paul Untied Church of Christ in Pinckneyville on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be made to the Perry County Jail Museum in Pinckneyville.

Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville was in charge of arrangements.

Bobby Ray Nelson
Bobby Ray Nelson, 54, died June 10, 2001 at his home.

Born June 15, 1946 in Lilbourn, son of the late R. V. and Minnie Mae Gould Nelson, he was a heavy equipment operator in coal mines for the Illini Energy Resource of Murphysboro. He was a member of the United Mine Workers and Operating Engineers.

His first wife, Kay Morgan Nelson, preceded him in death on July 22, 1998.

On September 1, 2000, he married Brenda Maxwell at Paducah, Ky. and she survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Mark Nelson of Elkville and David Nelson of Christopher; two daughters, Carol Nelson and Cindy Nelson of DuQuoin; one step-son, Dustin Hanner of Farrenburg; one step-daughter, Brandy Williams of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers, Richard Hanner of Owensboro, Ky. and Roger Hanner of Scott City and five grandchildren, Josh Nelson and Brittney Nelson of Christopher, Zachary Nelson and Ethan Nelson of Elkville and Morgan Nelson of DuQuoin.

One grandson also preceded him in death.

Friends called after 6 p.m. today at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid where services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The Rev. Harold Gass, former pastor of the Brethren Church of Farrenburg officiated.

Burial followed in the Matthew City cemetery.

Lucille R. Opp
Lucille R. Opp, 85, of DuQuoin, passed away at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.

Lucille was a homemaker and had worked at the Pinckneyville Dress Factory. she was a member of the First Christian Church in DuQuoin.

She was born February 23, 1916 at Pinckneyville, the daughter of John and Mary Ettee (Mattox) Rigdon. She married James O. Opp on April 15, 1938 at Cape Girardeau, Mo. and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of DuQuoin; son, Steve Opp and wife Adriana of St. Charles, Mo.; daughter, Susie Krone and husband David of DuQuoin; sister, Norma Stein of Belleville; brother, Buddy Rigdon of Pinckneyville; four granddaughters, Shannon Krone, Jill Irwin, Allison Opp and Lindsay Lee and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Eileen McMurray, Pearl Armstrong and Nina Miller.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Chester Zimmer officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Searby Funeral Home.

Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Friends may make memorials to the Perry County Hospice.

Jack L. Phillips
Jack L. Phillips, 67, of Elkville, passed away at 6:58 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital S.E. in Houston, Texas.

Jack was a retired roof bolter at Freeman United #6 Coal Mine. He had been an Elkville City Police officer for four years and had coached and managed Elkville Khoury league for 10 years. He was a member of the UMWA Local 1591 and was a Protestant. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was born November 19, 1933 at Hallidayboro, the son of Robert and Marie (Halstead) Phillips. He married Sandra K. Havens on July 2, 1966 at Elkville and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Elkville; four sons- David Harrison of Jackson, Tenn., Jan Phillips and wife Wanda of Pinckneyville, Kevin Harrison and wife Denise of DuQuoin, Donnie Harrison and wife Lala of Port Isabel, Tex.; one daughter- Cindy Deleon and husband Oridio of Port Isabel, Tex.; two brothers- Bob Phillips and wife Juanita of Anna, Paul Phillips and wife Rose of DuQuoin; sister-in-law- Alberta Phillips of DuQuoin; 16 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother- Edward Phillips.

Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 17 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Bro. Jerry Aken officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in Elkville cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the American Lung Association.

Sarah E. Bathon
Sarah E. Bathon, 75, of Pinckneyville, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at the Forest Park Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Sarah was a homemaker and had worked at the Pinckneyville Garment Factory. She was a member of the St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church at Todds Mill and the St. Mary Magdalen Altar Society.

She was born July 25, 1925 at Tamaroa, the daughter of Charles Richard and Mary Elizabeth (Boismenue) Harris. She married Lawrence F. Bathon on December 30, 1950 at St. mary Magdalen Catholic Church at Todds Mill and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of Pinckneyville; eight children, Sister Julia Marie (Mary) Bathon, O.S.F., of Bird Island, Minn., William G. Bathon and wife Marsha Ann of Pinckneyville, Richard E. Bathon and wife Judy of Tamaroa, Leonard C. Bathon and wife LaVeda of Nashville, Lawrence D. Bathon and wife Lisa of Georgetown, Ky., Donna M. Mikesell and friend of Nashville, John F. Bathon of Ashley and Janice E. Rust and husband Mike of Coulterville; three brothers, Captain H. Harris, William D. Harris and Allen R. Harris, all of Tamaroa; two sisters, Susie M. Ernest of Coulterville, Jennie B. Cizick of Tamaroa; 15 grandchildren; four step grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father; mother, Mary Elizabeth Boismenue Harris McCowen; son, Gerald A. Bathon and brother, Hosea R. Harris.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9 at the St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church at Todds Mill wiht Fr. James Van Oss officiating. Interment was in the St. Mary Magdalen cemetery at Todds Mill.

Friends called from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa. The Rosary was said at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Friends may make memorials to Masses, Illinois Right to Life or the St. Judes Research Center.

Donald Ray Batteau
Mr. Donald Ray Batteau, age 64, passed away Friday, June 22, 2001 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He was born January 9, 1937 in Elkville to Clifford E. Batteau and Helen (Carter) Batteau. He graduated from Elkville Community High School in 1955 and shortly thereafter entered the U.S. Navy where he served 30 years, attaining the rank of Fleet Force Master Chief (E-9). Mr. Batteau's service included several stints at sea aboard aircraft carriers, including duty near Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also served during the Vietnam Conflict. among his accomplishments were the Navy Achievement Medal with Bronze Star, Navy Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with one star.

Mr. Batteau was a member of the Al Amin Shrine Temple in Corpus Christi, Texas and the Masonic Lodge of DeSoto, Illinois. He was a Lutheran.

Mr. Batteau was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford E. and Helen Margaret Batteau; a sister, Dorothy Jean Batteau and brother, Clifford E. Batteau Jr. He is survived by his wife, Ola Mae Lunz Batteau of Pernita Point, Texas; a daughter, Dawna Rae Batteau of Christopher; step-daughters, Denise and husband Mark Wars of Kingwood, Tex. and Debbie and husband Charles Schroeder of Conroe, Tex.; step-son, Kenneth and his wife Colleen Kirchoff of Huffman, Tex.; sisters, Sharlet E. Piper of DeSoto, Georgia Aldridge of Schaumburg, Ill, Mary Ellen Willoughby of Wichita, Kan.; brothers, Billy Batteau of Vergennes and John Thomas Batteau of DuQuoin; step-mother, Pauline Batteau of Murphysboro; granddaughter, Kancesha Lynn Miller of Christopher; seven step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; uncle, Jack Batteau of Elkville; aunts, Judy Batteau of Elkville, Manetta Smith of DeSoto, Katherine Smith of Johnson City, Sarah Hons of St. Louis, Mo., Sue Batteau of DuQuoin, mary Kias of Bocca Raton, Fla., two step-brothers and three step-sisters of Murphysboro and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services in Texas were conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 24 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Orange Grove, Texas with Rev. Michael Gabby.

Visitation was held at the Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro on Thursday, June 28 from 5 until 9 p.m. Masonic services were conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Funeral services in Murphysboro were held at the Crawshaw Funeral Home on Friday, June 29 at 10 a.m. with Pastor Franklyn A. Schroeder. Burial was held at the DeSoto City cemetery with full military honors conducted by : American Legion Post 127 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7190, both in Murphysboro, VFW Post 2605 in Carbondale and Jackson County Disabled American Veterans Chapter 69 and the United States Navy.
