Gladys Edith Porter
Gladys Edith Porter, 87, of Centralia, formerly of Elkville, passed away at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2001 at the Fireside Manor in Centralia.
Gladys was a retired seamstress from Forrest City Garment Co. She was a member of the First Christian Church in DuQuoin and a member of the DeSoto Eastern Star and the White Shrine. She was a graduate of DuQuoin High School.
She was born December 15, 1913 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Joseph and Frances (Woods) Hartley. She married
Howard Allen Porter on January 17, 1932 at Carmi and he preceded her in death in 1984.
She is survived by a son, Melbourne Lee Porter and wife Sandra of Illiopolis, daughter, Carolyn Jane Wilson of Centralia; seven grandchildren, leanne Stephens and toni Flexter of Illiopolis, Greg Porter of Arnold, Mo., Brett and Allen Wilson and Robin Gormann of Centralia and Johna Albritton of Louisville, Ky.; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Andrew Hartley and two sisters, Jessie Rice and Linda Campbell.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 4 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Bro. Jerry Aken officiating.
Friends alled from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.
Interment was in the Elkville cemetery.

Marie C. Bathon
Marie C. Bathon, age 77, of Coulterville, died in the Coulterville Care Center on Thursday, September 6, 2001 at 8:15 p.m.
Marie was born in Pinckneyville on October 4, 1923, the daughter of John H. and Emma (Yung) Loos. She married
Francis Todd Bathon on February 9, 1946 in the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville and he preceded her in death on October 22, 1982. Marie was a member of the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
Survivors include five sons, James Bathon and wife Carolyn of Coulterville, Francis E. Bathon and wife Patty of Pinckneyville, Thomas Bathon and wife Jeannie of Coulterville, David Bathon of Coulterville and Roger Bathon and wife Judy of Coulterville; five daughters, Barbara Griffin and husband Bill of Pinckneyville, Jane Schuessler and husband Curt of Sparta, Linda Grzegorek and husband Stanley of Centralia, Carolyn Holder and husband David of Baldwin and Janet Burris and husband Ed of Coulterville; one brother, John H. Loos Jr. of Percy; two sisters, Mildred Wildermuth and Irene Marlow, both of Pinckneyville; 26 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, an infant brother and an infant sister.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 10 at St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville at 10 a.m. with Father John Venegoni officiating. Interment was in St. Bruno Catholic cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Visitation was held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Coulterville on Sunday, September 9 from 5 to 9 p.m. and at the St. Bruno Catholic Church on Monday from 8 until 10 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.
Donald M. Sullivan
Donald M. "Hap' Sullivan died September 28, 2001 after a lengthy battle with kidney disease.
Hap was born in Vergennes, Ill. on December 12, 1930. He enlisted in the U.S.A.F. in 1948. He served in Korea and Vietnam where he was a communications code specialist. He taught electronics in service. Hap retired from the Air Force in 1968 and settled his family in Oklahoma City. He worked many years as a truck driver in the security field.
Hap was a 32nd degree mason out of McAlester. Hap was a member of the Shrine clowns and was the "court jester'. He was very active as a Shrine clown and could always be seen in parades, at the Shrine circus and at the clown booth at the state fair. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Hap was an active member of the Southern Temple Baptist Church. Hap's love of God and country never wavered.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gladys Nausley Sullivan and by his wife Alma.
He is survived by his four children, Marilyn Windshiegl and her husband Peter of Monona, Wisc., Donald Sullivan and his wife Peggy of Independence, Kan., Tammy Godfrey of Oklahoma City and Michael Sullivan and his wife Kim of Norman, Okla. His surviving brother is William and his wife Priscilla of Remer, Minn. His surviving sister is Frances Campanella and her husband Augie of DuQuoin. Hap is survived by eight grandchildren, Kristin, Velinda, Tyler, Paige, Dana, Braxton, Alex and Adam. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were Tuesday, October 2 at 2:30 p.m. at Arlington Memory Gardens in Midwest City, Okla. Services were under the direction of Vondel L. Smith and Son Mortuary, Oklahoma City, Okla.
Edward H. Higgins
Edward H. "Pal' Higgins, 68, of Hallidayboro, passed away at 2:46 a.m. Sunday, September 23, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Edward was a retired laborer. He was born August 24, 1933 at Hallidayboro, the son of Stanley and Mabel E. (Holloran) Higgins.
He is survived by a brother, Raymond Higgins of Creal Springs; several nieces and nephews and a friend, Jerry Beard of Hallidayboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ruth Swayne.
Graveside memorial services were held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, September 28 at the Hallidayboro cemetery with Bob Hartsock officiating.
Those attending the services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.
The Searby Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Hallidayboro Methodist Church.
Genevieve Jakle
Genevieve Jakle, 75, of Morgantown, Ky., passed away at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001 at her residence.
Mrs. Jakle was a member of Morgantown First United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Historical Society.
She was born March 26, 1926 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Otto F. and Anna Reid Jones. She married
Bernard F. Jakle and he preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Melody Johnson of Muncie, Indiana; two grandsons, Bradley Johnson and his fiancee Lisa Daugherty and Jeremy Johnson, all of Muncie, Indiana; one great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Johnson and one niece, Pamela Leach-Urban of DuQuoin.
A memorial service was held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Jones Funeral Chapel in Kentucky.
Memorial donations may be made to Morgantown First United Methodist Church or Butler County Historical Society.
Henry Arthur Keiner
Henry Arthur (Heinie) Keiner, 80, of Sunfield, passed away at 8:02 a..m. Monday, September 24, 2001 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
Henry was a retired coal miner, last working at the Streamline Mine at Percy as a welder. He was a member of the Sunfield United Methodist Church and had been a church choir member for several years. He was a member of the UMWA and was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II.
He was born September 8, 1921 at DuQuoin, the son of George H. and Marie (Telkemeyer) Keiner.
He is survived by a daughter, Cindy Rainwater and husband Charles of Sunfield; step-son, Carl David Bailey of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two grandchildren- Kimberly Loyd and husband Scott of Sunfield, Andy Rainwater of Sunfield; sister, Mildred Hirsch of Tamaroa; niece, Judy Myers and husband Dick; nephew, Don Hirsch and wife Nancy.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 26 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Jerry Dunn officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.
Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Maud Thompson
Maud Thompson, age 80, of Norwood Community near Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of DuQuoin, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital.
Mrs. Thompson was a member of Northside Christian Church, a member of the Board of Mabry-Hazen House, as well as, past Docent at Blount Mansion. She was also a member of Civil War Roundtable and a past member of Happy Hikers.
Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Gerald Standridge and Linda and Jim White; grandchildren, Gerald and Susan Standridge, Tierney and Jeff Diehl, Jeffrey and Michelle Standridge, Todd and Michelle Standridge, Jacinda and Brian Kopke, Melanie White, Missy and Scot Wardrep, Jim and Janet White and Jason and Stephanie White; great-grandchildren, Erin, Catie, Elizabeth, Victoria, Camille, Jacey and Kathleen Standridge and Hayley Reinhart, Ethan Kopke and Justin, Josh and Jacob Diehl; brother, Everett Hackleman; sisters, Gloria Ostradka and Grace Short of DuQuoin and Norma Walker and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy L. Thompson.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 25 at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel with Rev. Jerry Null and Rev. Fred Bishop officiating.
Interment followed in Greenwood cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 2300 W. Adair Drive, Knoxville, TN 37918.

Charles Gilbert Tennison
Charles Gilbert Tennison, 81, of Tamaroa, passed away at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Charles had owned and operated Tennison's Service Station for 45 years. He was a member of the Sunfield United Methodist Church, the DuQuoin Oddfellows Lodge for over 50 years and a member of the American Thresherman's Association.
He was born February 19, 1920 in Franklin County, the son of Gilbert and Verda (Reeves) Tennison. He married
Dorothy Mae Berg on June 15, 1941 at Jackson, Mo. She passed away March 22, 1991.
He is survived by two daughters, Judy McCurdy of Pinckneyville, Linda Doerr of DuQuoin; two sons, Larry Tennison of Baton Rouge, La., Gary Tennison of DuQuoin; brothers and sisters, John Henry Tennison of Sun City, Fla., Cecil Tennison of Benton, Hazel Gibbs of Florida, Donald Tennison of Bosque Farms, N.M., Bob Tennison of McLeansboro, Harold Tennison of Ewing, James Tennison of Galatia, Curt Tennison of Raleigh, Eva Gibbs of Orient, Sue Mister of St. Peters, Mo; step-brothers and step-sisters, Claude Holmes of Zeigler, Harold and Vernon Holmes, both of DuQuoin, Helen Beckham of DuQuoin; 10 grandchildren, Kevin McCurdy, Karen Knapp, Mindy Rathbun, Rodney Doerr, Rick Tennison, Danny Tennison, Kristy Tennison, Kellie Tennison, Leslie Tennison, Becky Merritt; 10 great-grandchildren, Kristine Tennison, Austin Tennison, Jacob Rathbun, Kayla Rathbun, Dustin McCurdy, Ashley McCurdy, Brittany Knapp, Houston Merritt, Cortney Hale, Josh Hale and one great-great-grandchild, Garrett Hale.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Robert Charles Tennison and brothers, William, Herbert and Clyde.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Friday, September 7 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Jerry Dunn officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.
Interment was in the Paradise cemetery at Tamaroa.

Phyllis Jean Quillman Upson
Phyllis Jean Quillman Upson, age 83, of Boulder City, Nevada, formerly of Pinckneyville, passed away Friday, September 28, 2001 at the Nathan Adelson Hospice Home in Las Vegas, Nevada following a long illness.
Phyllis was born in Pinckneyville on July 17, 1918, the daughter of Dr. James Leonard and Trella Beatrice (Burch) Quillman. She was a graduate of Washington University School of Nursing and Loyola University School of Public Health. She served as school nurse for the DuQuoin public schools and was Director of Nursing at Pinckneyville Community Hospital. She retired to Boulder City, Nev. in 1983 from the position of Executive Director of the American Lung Association- San Jacinto Area in Houston, Tex.
Survivors include her daughter, Marsha (Marti) Upson of Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister, Betty Klinger of Pinckneyville; a niece, Suzie Mohr and a nephew, Steve Klinger.
Funeral services were held Friday, october 5, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the United Methodist Church, Pinckneyville, with Dr. Robert Smith officiating. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery, Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the United Methodist Church on Thursday from 6 until 9 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. until services.
Arrangements were by Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville.
Norman R. Kessel
Norman R. Kessel, Sr., 79, of Du Quoin died at 7:50 p.m. on Sunday, September 2, 2001 at Fair Acres Nursing Home.
Mr. Kessel was born January 7, 1922 in Ava, Ill., the son of Henry J. and Lela E. (Valentin) Kessel. He married
Cecilia J. Mesner on February 11, 1945 in Ava, and she survives. He was a retired banker and a member of the Elks, Moose and U.M.W.A.
Survivors include his wife, Cecilia Kessel of Du Quoin; two sons, Kenneth A. Kessel of Reston, Va. and Norman Kessel, Jr. of Frisco, Tex.; a daughter, Anna Jean Medina of Stanton, Cal.; a brother, Melvin Kessel of West Frankfort and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, September 7, 2001 at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating. Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 7:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rosary was said at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial was in Sacred Heart cemetery, Du Quoin.
Glenna L. Kelley
Glenna L. Kelley, 74, of DuQuoin, passed away at 7:05 a.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at her residence.
Glenna was a homemaker and had been a cook at Ward and Wheatley Schools. She was a member of First Baptist Church of DuQuoin.
She was born December 7, 1926 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Homer and Addie (Vincent) Anderson. She married
Bert B. Kelley on November 10, 1946 at the First Baptist Church and he survives.
She is survived by her husband of DuQuoin; four sons, Robert Kelley of DuQuoin, Tom Kelley and wife Chris of DuQuoin, Bill Kelley of DuQuoin, Kenneth Kelley of Pinckneyville; three brothers, Wayne Anderson of Geneseo, Tom Anderson of Riverside, Calif., Clifford Anderson of Metropolis; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Leroy and Russell Anderson and a sister, Mary June Beard.
Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 15 at the First Baptist Church in DuQuoin with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the church on Saturday.
Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Lawrence Noah Knapp
Lawrence "Rusty' Noah Knapp, 85, of Tamaroa, passed away at 7:58 a.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
Lawrence was a retired coal miner, last working as an electrician and mechanic at Freeman #6 mine. He was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church in DuBois, UMWA Local 1591 and was a former town and school board member.
He was born June 16, 1916 at Tamaroa, the son of Walter and Martha (Waligorski) Knapp. He married
Eugenia Tkaczyk on July 10, 1937 at St. Louis, Mo. and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Tamaroa; children, Jimmy and Frances Knapp of Dowell, Nancy and Salathiel Quinn of DuQuoin, Phyllis Ferguson of Tamaroa, Loretta and Gary Adcock of Tamaroa, Leonard and Eileen Knapp of DuQuoin, Betty and Dave Roberts of Tamaroa, Jerry and Carolyn Knapp of Dalton, Ga., Carol Sue and Rich Kuberski of DuBois, Bobby and Elaine Knapp of Nashville, Mary Jo and Roger Rybacki of DuQuoin, Nelson and Stephanie Knapp of Tamaroa; son-in-law, Greg Ratajczyk of Scheller; 28 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; four sisters and one brother.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cathy Ratajczyk; two grandsons, one sister and two brothers.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 15 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tamaroa with Msgr. Melvin Vandeloo officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa. The Rosary was said at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the St. Charles cemetery at DuBois.
