Francis Levi "Pappy" Shaw
Francis Levi "Pappy" Shaw, 83, of 703 East Poplar Street in Robinson, Ill. passed away on Monday, November 26, 2001 at 4:05 p.m. at Cotillion Ridge Nursing Center following a long period of failing health.
He was born in Elkville in Jackson County, Ill. on January 18, 1918, the son of Frank Shaw and Chloe (Shepard) Shaw. On December 24, 1938 he married
Opal Irene (Wright).
He was a retired coal miner, foreman, track layer, timberman and machine operator for Peabody Coal Co. for 42 years.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Robinson, Ill. and the BPO Elks No. 1188 and was a past Dowell school board member.
Survivors include his wife, Opal; sons Gary Don and wife Barbara Shaw of Kankakee, IL., Jerry W. Shaw of Oblong, IL., William E. "Bill" of Twyla Shaw, Robinson, IL.; grandchildren Christine Beckman, Stacy Shaw, Brian Shaw, Autumn Burkett and great-grandchildren Allison Beckman; Luke Beckman and Brandon & Hunter Shaw as well as a sister, Genevieve Bullar of DeSoto, IL. and other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Geneva Curtis.
Her funeral was scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, November 29, 2001 at the Pulliam Funeral Home in Robinson, Ill. with Rev. T. R. Akers officiating. Burial was in Robinson New cemetery, Robinson, IL. Visitation was today from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Pulliam Funeral Home and until time of services on Thursday.

Jon R. Smith
Jon R. Smith, age 44, of 313 N. Main, Brighton, Ill., passed away peacefully at his home Thursday, November 15, 2001.
Jon was formerly of Pinckneyville and was employed by Union Pacific Railroad until stricken with brain cancer four and a half years ago. He was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville. He attended St. Bruno's Catholic School for eight years and Pinckneyville Community High School for four years.
He is survived by two daughters, Jasmine and Jolene Smith; his parents, Jeril and Betty Smith of 5525 State Route 154 Pinckneyville; his 95-year-old grandmother, Regina Bruns of Pinckneyville; two sisters, Deborah Schnur and husband David and Judy Smith, both of Pinckneyville; two brothers, Mark Smith and wife Dawn of Pinckneyville and Rod Smith and friend Tina Berretta of Ashley.
Jon was preceded in death by a sister, Cheryl Smith; an uncle, Herman Bruns of Alexis, Ill; a nephew, Douglas Bruns and cousin, Michael Daven II; his paternal grandparents, Ray and Lillie (Walker) Smith and maternal grandfather, John C. Bruns, all of Pinckneyville; an aunt, Loretta Daven and her husband, Michael Daven of St. Peters, Mo.
Other survivors include nieces and nephews, Erica and Nicole Caupert of Swansea; Kyle, Tyler and Jessica Taylor Smith of Pinckneyville; Mitchell Graff; Jordan and Peyton Smith; Julie and husband Jeremy Kelley, and a great-niece, Haley Kelly, all of Alton; two step-nephews, Jason and Jacob Schnur of Centralia. John a was a caring, beloved person by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn him a host of relatives, friends, co-workers and neighbors and his beloved in-laws, Roger and Gloria Thies of Pinckneyville.
Funeral services were held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville Saturday, November 17 at 10 a.m. with Father John Venegoni officiating. Interment was in St. Bruno Catholic cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville Friday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. and again on the day of service from 8 a.m. until services.

Raymond O. Spann
Raymond O. Spann, 92, of Sesser, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2001 at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado.
Mr. Spann was a retired Carpenter and a member of First Baptist Church in Sesser where he was a Deacon for over 60 years.
He was born February 15, 1909 at Sesser, the son of Alva Theodore and Addie Gertrude (McBride) Spann. He married
Eva Romaine Sammons and she preceded him in death on March 29, 1998.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were Wednesday, November 28 at 11 a.m. at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Brother Woody Wilson officiating. Interment was in Mitchell cemetery at Sesser.
Friends called at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home after 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Baptist Church is preferred and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Verdie Stewart
Verdie Stewart, age 101, of Fair Acres in DuQuoin and a former Benton resident, died at 2:40 p.m. Thursday, November 29. 2001 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
She was born on December 11, 1899 in West Frankfort, the daughter of William Scott and Ada (Hill) Dorris.
On November 1, 1919, she married
T. Benton Stewart. He preceded her in death on February 27, 1982.
Mrs. Stewart was a member of the Frisco Baptist Church and in later years, became a member of the North Benton Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Una Duckworth and husband Fred of DuQuoin and Eula Richardson and husband Marvin of Georgetown, Ind.; one son, Kenneth Stewart and wife Darlene of DuQuoin; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her parents; husband, four grandchildren and one brother, Harvey Dorris.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 2 at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with Rev. George Moore officiating. Burial was in the Masonic & Oddfellows cemetery in Benton. Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.
Jeannette Ann Sprenger
Jeannette Ann Sprenger, age 68, of 3609 State Route 13/127, Pinckneyville, passed away suddenly at her home Friday evening, November 23, 2001.
Jeannette was born the daughter of William Geltz and Helen (Quackenbush) Templeton in Pinckneyville on July 16, 1933. Jeannette was united in marriage to Carl H. Sprenger August 20, 1955 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Pinckneyville and he survives.
Jeannette was a lifelong resident of Pinckneyville, a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Pinckneyville, was a Church Elder and Sunday School teacher and enjoyed quilting. Jeannette was a retired registered dietician employed by the Pinckneyville Community Hospital and other healthcare facilities in the surrounding area.
Jeannette is survived by her husband Carl of Pinckneyville; one son, Tim Sprenger and wife Jamie of St. Louis, Mo.; one daughter, Melissa Sprenger of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Marge Hamilton and husband Glen and Kay West and husband Robert, both of Pinckneyville. Jeannette was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Alice Marie Sutliff.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 27 at 11 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Pinckneyville with Reverend Tom Hobson officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville Monday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. and then at the church Tuesday morning from 8 a.m. until services.

Albert C. Wesseln
Albert C. Wesseln, 79, of Tamaroa, passed away at 8:01 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2001 at the St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond Heights, Mo.
Albert was a retired refrigerator repairman for McDaniel's Refrigeration in Pinckneyville. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DuQuoin. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WW II. He was a member of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society, a 50-year member of the DuQuoin American Legion Post and a 45-year member of the DuQuoin Elks Lodge.
He was born December 7, 1921 at DuQuoin, the son of Herman and Kathryn (Epplin) Wesseln.
He is survived by a niece, Rose Marie (Bill) McDonough of St. Louis; great-nephew, Darren (Lori) McDonough of Greensboro, N.C.; great-niece, Dana McDonough of St. Louis; cousins and many friends.
A memorial mass was at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2001 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DuQuoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Friends called from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Interment was in Sacred Heart cemetery.
The Searby Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.

Graveside military rites were conducted by the DuQuoin American Legion Post.
Tommy Torrens
Tommy Torrens, age 90, of Pinckneyville, passed away Sunday morning, November 25, 2001 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of the Pinckneyville and Oakdale areas.
Tommy was born the son of Calvin Todd and Martha V. (Kimzey) Torrens in Oakdale on February 10, 1911. He was united in marriage to Maxine Anderson in Carbondale on July 30, 1931 and she survives.
Tommy was a teacher, coach and farmer. He was respected and loved by family and friends. He touched the lives of many through his love of teaching and his involvement with the community. He enjoyed life whether it was when farming, fishing or supporting Pinckneyville basketball. Tommy like friendly competition, playing games with family and friends and he always played to win.
Tommy began his teaching career in a one-room country school and retired from 204 School District after many years as a teacher and coach. He took great pleasure in working with children and seeing their lifetime achievements, academically and in sports. In addition, he was a farmer and raised registered Hereford cattle.
He was a member of he First United Presbyterian Church, Pinckneyville, where he served as a deacon. he was also an Elder at the Galum Presbyterian Church, Pinckneyville. He served two terms as a Perry County Commissioner. Tommy was a member of the Board of Directors of Egyptian Electric and Egyptian Telephone Companies. He was a 4-H leader and he taught Veteran's Agriculture courses following WW II.
Tommy is survived by his wife, Maxine, of Pinckneyville; a daughter, Frances Carson and husband Preston of Pinckneyville; three grandchildren, Carol Torrens of Normal, David Torrens of Monticello and Sandy Kiehna of Carbondale; a grandson-in-law, Brad Flinders of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Kay Torrens of Glen Carbon and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Kacie Flinders, both of San Antonio, Texas. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Norman T. Torrens; three brothers; three sisters; a granddaughter, Patricia Ann Flinders and a son-in-law, Russell Kiehna.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 28 at 10:30 a.m. in the First United Presbyterian Church in Pinckneyville with the Reverend Tom Hobson officiating. Interment was at Mueller Hill cemetery, Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville Tuesday evening from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8 until 9 a.m., then at the church from 9:30 a.m.until services.

Kathleen M. Zacher
Kathleen M. Zacher, age 69, of Pinckneyville, died in St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville, Ill. on Wednesday, November 7, 2001.
Kathleen was born in Murphysboro on May 18, 1932, the daughter of George and Anna Marie (Albers) Zacher. She worked at the Pinckneyville Garment Factory from 1951 until its closing. She also worked as an office manager and emergency medical technician for the Pinckneyville Ambulance Service. She was a member of the St. Bruno Catholic Church, St. Bruno School Board and the American Ambulance Association.
Survivors include her sister, Georgia Zacher of Pinckneyville; two aunts, Viola Albers of Texas and Thelma Albers of Indiana; several cousins, including Robert Zacher and wife Ruth of St. Louis, Mo., Rose Mary Poiter of Pinckneyville and Marlene Wolfe and husband Merrill of DuQuoin; special friends, Helen D. Timpner of Pinckneyville, Phyllis Epplin of Pinckneyville and her extended family at the Pinckneyville Ambulance Service.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother; one aunt and five uncles, including Harry J. Zacher and Arthur C. Zacher.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 10 at 10 a.m. in the St. Bruno Catholic Church with Father John Venegoni officiating. Interment was in the St. Bruno Catholic cemetery.
Visitation was at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home on Friday, November 9 from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 until 9:15 a.m. The Rosary was said at 9 a.mm. on Saturday morning.

Virginia Lee Phelps
Virginia Lee (Fisher) Phelps, age 77, of Pinckneyville, died in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at 10:05 a.m.
Virginia was born in Tamaroa on July 6, 1924, the daughter of Everett Paul and Ora Edith (Jones) Fisher. She married
Robert E. Phelps on May 26, 1940 in Perryville, Mo. and he preceded her in death on December 18, 1991. Virginia worked as a waitress at the Chase Hotel in St. Louis, Mo. and was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include three sisters, Erma Cooper of Arena, Wisc., Barbara Lacy of Pinckneyville and Carolyn Bliss of Sapulpa, Okla.; her step-mother, Gertie Fisher of Pinckneyville; a son-in-law, James Gregory Crose of Calif. and three grandsons, Steven Crose, Douglas Crose and Gregory Crose, all of Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Judith Crose; a brother, James E. Fisher; two sisters, Ramona Behm and Evelyn Jenkel; a niece, April Jenkel and a nephew, J.D. Jenkel.
Funeral services were held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Saturday, December 1 at 11 a.m. with James Jenkel officiating. Interment was in Mueller Hill cemetery.
Visitation was held on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until services at the funeral home.

Clifford F. Hamburger
Clifford F. Hamburger, 84, of DuQuoin, passed away at 2:16 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2001 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
Clifford was a retired automotive parts manager. he was a member of the Gospel Assembly Church in DuQuoin.
He was born January 28, 1917 at DuQuoin, the son of Frank and Martha (Jones) Hamburger. He married
Fern V. Franklin on June 2, 1958 at DuQuoin and she survives.
He is survived by his wife, Fern Hamburger of DuQuoin and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 19 at the gospel Assembly Church in DuQuoin with Rev. Dennis Fitzsimmons officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin and from 10 a.m. until services at the church on Monday.
Interment was in the Old DuQuoin cemetery.
Fred W. Scarlett
Fred W. Scarlett, 65, of DuQuoin, died Friday, November 30, 2001 at 3:40 a.m. at his home in Inverness, Florida.
Mr. Scarlett was a Bank Examiner and a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in DuQuoin. He was a past Elder of Bethel Lutheran Church, auditor for First Lutheran Church in Inverness, Fla. and a member of Elks, VFW and American Legion. Mr. Scarlett was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was born July 20, 1936 at West Frankfort, the son of Fred and Margaret (Brown) Scarlett. He married
Kitty McClure on April 1, 1962 at Vandalia.
Surviving are his wife, Kitty Scarlett; two daughters and their husbands, Shelley and Rob Schantz of Inverness, Fla. and Sherri and Neal Halstead of Columbia, Mo.; one brother, Don Scarlett of Pana; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Les and Donna McClure of Indianapolis, Ind.; five grandchildren, Sidney Schantz, Taylor Schantz, Tyler Schantz, Blake Halstead and Jacob Halstead and four nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jean White.
Funeral services were Wednesday, December 5 at 12:30 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in DuQuoin with Rev. Gregory J. Schultz officiating.
Interment was in St. Peter's cemetery in Campbell Hill.
Visitation was at Bethel Lutheran Church on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m..
