Alice Roberta Reidelberger
Alice Roberta Reidelberger, of 2270 Fleetwood Drive, San Bruno, Calif., known as Roberta or "Ro' by her immediate family and close friends and as Alice professionally, died early on the morning of Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in South San Francisco, Calif. She died after long years of physical ailment culminating in respiratory failure and pneumonia, complicated by emphysema.

Alice was born September 8, 1929 in Pinckneyville, the youngest child of Luther C. and Hazel H. Reidelberger, both of whom preceded her in death.

Alice was raised and went to elementary school in Pinckneyville. In 1943, she moved with her family to St. Louis, Mo. where she finished her education and attended Beauty College. She became associated with Seligman and Latz, the world's largest concessionaire of beauty salons, at their shop in the Stix, Baer and Fuller Department Store. She remained at the St. Louis store for 20 years, achieving prominence as their premiere high fashion hair stylist with a host of clients and associates.

In 1970 she transferred to San Francisco where she became a salon manager, then area supervisor and finally executive assistant. Upon leaving Seligman and Latz, she trained as an accountant. She worked as an independent accountant until she became associated with the Bank of America where she became an account executive.

Leaving the Bank of America, she joined the staff of K-Mart where she worked until her retirement in 1995. For the last 23 years, she has lived with her sister, Helen, in San Bruno.

Alice is survived by her sister, Helen; an older brother, Jacque of Winona, Minn. and a great number of first and second cousins in California, Georgia, Illinois, Mexico, South Carolina and many friends and associates.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, December 4 at the San Bruno Funeral Home.

Friends called locally at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, Thursday, December 6 from 11 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. Graveside funeral services were held following the visitation at 2:30 p.m. in Mueller Hill cemetery, Pinckneyville, on the family plot, with Rev. James Bush officiating.

Norma M. Schwebel
Mrs. Norma M. Schwebel, age 87, passed away on Monday, November 26, at her home in Pinckneyville. She enjoyed good health until an illness earlier this year, but recovered and was active until her death.

Norma was born on April 10, 1914, in Bloomsdale, Mo. to Lawrence and Lilly Mae Schilly. She spent her early years in Weiner, Ark. and was united in marriage to August (Gus) Schwebel in Ava. Ill. on Jan. 16, 1934. She lived in Southern Illinois the rest of her life, moving to Pinckneyville in 1936. For nearly half a century she owned and operated Norma's Beauty Shop in Pinckneyville, retiring in her early 80s. For many years she also assisted son Charles in operating the Schwebel Funeral Home.

She was active in St. Bruno's Catholic Church, especially in the Catholic Daughters of America of which she was a charger member. Norma had numerous interests and hobbies. She belonged to card clubs, played golf (scoring a hole-in-one at age 80) and excelled in bowling, sewing and quilting.

Norma is survived by her son Michael and his wife Myra of Jupiter, Fla.; five grandchildren, Kevin Schwebel and wife Jodie of Lac Cruces, N.M., Lisa Smith of Willisville, Michele Smith and husband Douglas of Denver, Colo., Monica Schwebel of Ormond Beach, Fla, and Michael Schwebel, Jr. of Gainesville, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Riley Smith of Denver and Levi Smith of Willisville; one sister, Alma Hess of Wynne, Ark.; six brothers, Archie Schilly and wife Dorothy of Ocala, Fla., Aloysisus Schilly of Bloomsdale, Mo., Elmer Schilly of Jonesboro, Ark., Francis Schilly and wife Helen of Festus, Mo., Louis Schilly and wife Anita of Bloomsdale, Mo., and Lawrence (Junior) Schilly and wife Shirley of French Village, Mo.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son Charles and three brothers as well as special friend Donna Hardwick of Chester, Ill.

Visitation was at St. bruno's Catholic Church Friday evening, Nov. 30 from 5 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Bruno's Saturday, dec. 1 at 10 a.m. with Rev. John Venegoni officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the St. Bruno Catholic Church or the cemetery Fune.

Maxton Funeral Home of Du Quoin was in charge of the arrangments.

Billy Joe Scholebo
Billy Joe "Bo' Scholebo, age 53, of Jupiter, Florida, formerly of Pinckneyville, died at his home on Sunday, November 4, 2001 at 3:10 p.m.

Billy was born in Pinckneyville on December 14, 1947, the son of Joseph Lee Scholebo and M. Bernice (Hutchings) Scholebo. He married Jane I. Brand on March 29, 1968 and she survives. He served in the U.S. Navy on a submarine crew during the Vietnam Conflict. He worked as an Electrician for Palm Beach Resource and Recovery and previously worked as a supervisor with the AMAX Coal Co. and Arch of Illinois.

Survivors include his wife Jane of Jupiter, Fla.; two daughters, Jaci Scholebo of Eugene, Ore. and Rhonda Steinmetz, husband Matt, and daughters, Autumn and Sierra, all of Jupiter, Fla.; a brother, Ross Logan of Pinckneyville; four sisters, Kay Kaffenberger and husband Glenn of Osage Beach, Mo., Janet Brand and husband Bob, jeanne Brand and husband Bill and Crystal Campbell and husband Keith, all of Pinckneyville.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and stepfather, Clarence "Babe' Logan.

Funeral mass was held at the St. Bruno Catholic Church on Friday, November 9 at 10 a.m. with Father James Van Oss officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.

Visitation was held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Thursday, November 8 from 6 until 8 p.m. and on Friday from 8 until 9:15 a.m.

Veral L. Selby
Vera L. Selby, 54, of Du Quoin, passed away at 11:07 A.M., Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at her home.

Vera was a packer at General Henry Biscuit Company in Du Quoin, She was a member of the Nine Mile Baptist Church.

Vera was born December 4, 1946 at Du Quoin, IL the daughter of Lester and Bernice (Gossett) Green.

She married Gerald E. Selby on October 16, 1965 at Du Quoin, IL and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of Du Quoin, son- Jarrod E. Selby and wife Rhonda of Thompsonville, daughter- Yvette D. Purdy of Du Quoin, three brothers- Aves Green, Morris Green and Frank Green all of Du Quoin, sister- Carolyn Harrison of Elkville, three grandchildren- Dustin Purdy, Clayton Selby, Chase Selby, sister-in-law- Sheila Heumann of Du Quoin, fifteen nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, November 24, 2001 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Shaw DeMent officiating.

Friends called from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Interment was in the Old Du Quoin cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Olin J. Harris
Olin J. Harris, 67, of Springfield, Ill., passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2001 at 7:30 a.m. at his residence.

Mr. Harris was an Artist for the Department of Natural Resources, State of Illinois, since 1970. He was hired to provide4 artwork for the Department of Conservation, which at that time oversaw parks and historic sites throughout Illinois. Many were in need of artwork and displays to enhance the premises.

Mr. Harris began working and living at Silver Springs State Park. While working there, he built displays at Galena and at Illinois Beach. In addition, since he was the only artist who did original painting, he created artwork featuring Abraham Lincoln at some of the historic sites. He was transferred to Springfield headquarters in 1973 and worked out of a workshop and art studio at the Department's Pawnee warehouse.

As the Department of Natural Resources official artist, his work is enjoyed by thousands of visitors to Illinois State sites. His artwork appears in' Illinois Issues' magazine, DNR publications and note cards and decorates its offices.

He was renowned for his work featuring birds. For 10 years, he shared his enthusiasm for art with students at the University of Illinois at Springfield, where he was an adjunct professor in publication design. it was during this time period that he prepared artwork for his book, "An Artist's Book of Birds' which was published in 1996.

Mr. Harris was a graduate of University of Missouri and University of Illinois. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Harris was born December 18, 1933 at Tamaroa, the son of Olin K. and Carmen Ehler Harris. He married Suzanne "Sue' Benoit on August 6, 1968.

Surviving are his wife, Sue Harris; two daughters, Brittan (Michael W. Myers) Harris and Bettina B. Harris, both of Springfield; one son, Blake O. Harris of Springfield; three sisters, Betty (Eugene) Leidig of Addison, Colleen (Harold) Stanley of Springfield and Jeannette (Leon) Eisenhauer of Mohamet and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousin.

Funeral services were Saturday, December 8 at Staab Funeral Home in Springfield with Spiritual Leader Karen Kelly officiating. Interment was in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Friends called Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home in Springfield.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James Steven Huggins
James Steven Huggins, 29, of Pinckneyville, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Monday, December 17, 2001 at his residence.

He was a sawmill laborer and a was a Baptist.

He was born May 8, 1972 at DuQuoin, the son of Virgil Everett and Helen (Taylor) Huggins. He married Barbara Miller on May 8, 1998 at Pinckneyville and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Pinckneyville; parents, Virgil and Helen Huggins of Pinckneyville; son, James Huggins of Pinckneyville; step-son, Edward George of Pinckneyville; step-daughters, Crystal Miller of DuQuoin, Dana Miller and Elizabeth George, both of Sesser; brothers, William Calvin Huggins of Willisville, Michael Dean Huggins of Pinckneyville, Keith Allen Huggins of Willisville; sisters, Maxine Louise Irwin of Okawville, Carolyn Goodman of Pinckneyville; Loretta Lynn Huggins of Pinckneyville; four grandchildren, Dakota Miller, Tyler Green, Gavin Green, Kendra Green.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jessica Huggins, brother, Virgil Edward Huggins.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 20 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Duane Bolinger officiating.

Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in the Holts Prairie cemetery at Pinckneyville.

Cecilia J. Kessel
Cecilia J. Kessel, 78, of DuQuoin, passed away Monday, December 24, 2001 at 6:34 a.m. at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.

Mrs. Kessel was a Postmaster and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She was born February 4, 1923 at DuQuoin the daughter of John and Anna (Blazich) Mesner. She married Norman Kessel on February 11, 1945 at Ava and he preceded her in death on September 2, 2001.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Kessel of Reston, Va. and Norman Kessel Jr. of Frisco, Tex.; daughter, Anna Jean Medina of Anna, Tex.; brothers, Johnny Mesner of Chicago and Tony Mesner of El Paso; sisters, Anna Behrens of Rolling Medows and Molly Markovich of Joliet and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were Saturday, December 29 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating. Interment was in Sacred Heart cemetery at DuQuoin.

Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 7:30 to 9:45 a.m. at which time she will be moved to the church for services. The Rosary was said at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Harold D. Harsy
Harold D. Harsy, 50, of Murphysboro, passed away Monday, December 24, 2001 at 9:10 a.m. at his residence.

Mr. Harsy was a farmer and a heavy equipment operator with L.W. Construction, Collinsville. He was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro. He was also a member of the Operating Engineers Local #520 of Granite City, Jackson County Farm Bureau and the Elk's Lodge of Murphysboro.

He was born March 10, 1951 at DuQuoin, the son of Robert D. and Matilda (Valerius) Harsy. He married Nancy VanCloostere on April 16, 1971 in Murphysboro.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Harsy; his mother, Matilda Harsy of DuQuoin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Aaron and Holly Harsy of Bloomington and Aric and Rhonda Harsy of Murphysboro; three grandchildren, Michael Sapen Harsy of Bloomington, Brayden chase Harsy of Bloomington and Taryn Laine Harsy of Murphysboro; four brothers, Robert E. Harsy of DuQuoin, Jerry D. Harsy of DuQuoin; Bernard L. Harsy of DuQuoin and David Harsy of DuQuoin; three sisters, Donna Wright of DuQuoin, Diana Hodges of Corpus Christi, Texas and doris Kern of DuQuoin; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Lana Williams and Richard Williams of Millstadt and Roberta Sytsma and John Sytsma of Murphysboro.

He was preceded in death by his father and his father-in-law, Robert E. VanCloostere.

There was a Celebration of His Life Services at the Elk's Lodge in Murphysboro on Thursday, December 27 at 1 p.m. . His body had been cremated and Pettett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. or to St. Andrew's Church or School in Murphysboro.

Howard E. Lanam
Howard E. Lanam, 79, of Elkville, passed away at 1:25 a.m. Monday, December 10, 2001 at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Marion.

Mr. Lanum was retired from the Army and had served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was a member of First Baptist Church of DuQuoin.

He was born October 21, 1922 in Wappapello, Mo., the son of James and Alma (Knodell) Lanam. He married Elsie Grequrich on April 17, 1972 at Washington Park, Ill.

Surviving are his wife, Elsie Lanam of Elkville; two sons, Tom P. Lanam of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Michael Lanam of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three step-sons, Gene Shaw of Sparta, David Shaw and wife Debbie of St. Louis and Terry Shaw and wife Bev of Troy; one step-daughter, Sandy Colona and husband Rich of Troy and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services were Thursday, December 13 at 10 a.m. at Jefferson Barracks cemetery in St. Louis, Mo.

The Neal-McClure Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Elizabeth Combs
Mary Elizabeth Combs, 68, of Coffeen, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2001 in Williamsville.

Mrs. Combs was a homemaker and a member of Free Methodist Church in Hillsboro. Mrs. Combs lived in DuQuoin before moving to Coffeen in 1965.

She was born September 13, 1933 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Adolf "Butch' Joseph and Dora Della (Clark) Oestreicher. She married Floyd Collins Combs on September 6, 1952 in Elkville and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are her son, John D. Combs (wife June) of Hillsboro; daughter, Marianne Smith (husband David) of Williamsville; one grandson, Sean Patrick Combs of Hillsboro and a brother, Dwight Oestreicher of Oswego.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were Saturday, December 8 at 1 p.m. at Toberman-Dean Funeral Home in Coffeen with Rev. Randy Sands, of Free Methodist Church in Hillsboro, officiating. Interment was in Olive Hill cemetery in Coffeen.

Friends called Friday, December 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Toberman-Dean Funeral Home in Coffeen.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gladys Grace Mathis
Gladys Grace Mathis, age 72, of rural Pinckneyville, IL passed away suddenly at 4:43 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2001 at St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis, MO

Gladys was born in Pilot Knob Township of Washington County, IL on April 16, 1929, the daughter of Orange and Opal (Hutchings) Campbell.

She was united in marriage to Daniel L. Mathis on October 26, 1946 at the First Baptist Church, Nashville, IL. He preceded her in death on January 17, 2001.

In addition to raising her family of five children, she devoted her life to her husband, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During her lifetime she worked at Mallory Electronics and retired while working at Del Monte Food Corp. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, crafts, and gardening.

Gladys was a member of Beaucoup Baptist Church of Pinckneyville where she taught Sunday School for many years and also, served on the bereavement and kitchen committee.

Gladys is survived by three daughters; Nora Beth Helvey and her husband Larry of Pinckneyville, IL, Susan Knapp and her husband Ted of Mt. Vernon, IL, Cynthia Cluck and her husband Michael of Herrin, IL, one son, Mark Mathis and his wife Lillian of Pinckneyville, IL ten grandchildren; Mitchell Petty and wife Meredith of Evansville, IN, Bryan Helvey of Belleville, IL, Kristin Helvey, David Helvey and Dustin Cluck of Herrin, IL, Susan Garavaglia and husband Jim of Pinckneyville, IL, Jeanna Deaton and husband Aaron of Herrin, IL, Jared Knapp and Megan Knapp of Mt. Vernon, IL, and Jacie Mathis of Pinckneyville, IL, three great grandchildren, Landon Reed & Emma Grace Deaton, and Madison Kaye Garavaglia. 4 brothers, Merle Campbell and wife Ruth of Pinckneyville, IL, Elmer Lee Campbell and wife Carol Ann of Sandwich, IL, Billie Davis and wife Virginia of Madison WS, and Pat Campbell and wife Joyce of Pinckneyville, IL, 2 sisters, JoAnn Law and husband Larry of Somonauk, IL and Sharon Hinshaw and Ed of Pontiac, IL. 2 sister-in-laws, Marsha Campbell of Dwight, IL and Kay Davis of Du Quoin, IL. and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, Jessie Campbell, a daughter, Linda Ellen Petty, a granddaughter, Rhonda Kaye Helvey, and a grandson, Dustin Daniel Mathis, 2 brothers, Clifford Campbell and Paul Davis, a sister and two brothers in infancy.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. in the Beaucoup Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, IL with Rev. Bill Fox officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville, IL.

Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, IL on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m and then at the church on Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. till services.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the Rhonda Kaye Helvey Memorial Scholarship Fund.
