Franklin R. Owens
Franklin R. Owens, 73, of 1420 Vale St., Benton, died at 1:57 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001 at the Franklin Hospital.

Mr. Owens' wishes were to be cremated. Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Owens was born Feb. 13, 1928 in Tamaroa, IL, the son of Walter and Mabel (Rice) Owens. He married the former Doris Evans in 1965 and she died on Oct. 20, 1999.

He was a retired under water welder and a W. W. II U.S. Navy veteran.

He is survived by two grandsons, Angel Rivera, Christopher, Tony Hernandez and wife Candace Miller, Christopher, five sisters, Peggy and husband Leland Brown, Benton, Margaret McCollum, Coulterville, Jaquelyn and husband Harmon Kuhnert, Coulterville, Jo Ann Owens, Herrin, Carole and husband Bob Murry, Tamaroa, a

brother, Robert Owens, Carterville, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Billie Kay Hernandez, and a sister, Donna Bronke.

Jessie Lavezzi
Jessie Lavezzi, 99, of Dowell, passed away at 7:25 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2001 at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.

Jessie was a homemaker and a member of the Knoff Bend Pentecostal Church at Elkville.

She was born May 12, 1902 at DeSoto, the daughter of John and Ida (Forbes) Wright. She was first married to Michael J. Williams and he preceded her in death in 1933. She then married Bennie Lavezzi and he preceded her in death in 1961.

Surviving are two daughters, Druecella Newborn and Frances Sisk, both of Dowell; one son, Mike Williams and wife Glenda of Chicago; grandson, Shawn Newborn and wife Lynn of Dowell and two great-grandchildren, Shelby and Shana Newborn of Dowell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, three sisters and two brothers.

Graveside services were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, December 15 at the DeSoto cemetery with Rev. Merle Macke officiating.

The Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.

Those attending the services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.

Interment was in DeSoto cemetery.

Don Harry Halstead
Don Harry Halstead, 83, of DuQuoin, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Monday, December 10, 2001 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.

Don was a retired carpenter and had worked for Dale Williams Construction. He had also worked at Turco Mfg. in DuQuoin. Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church of DuQuoin and was a former trustee. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received in combat.

Don was born May 18, 1918 at Hallidayboro, the son of George and Maude (Manis) Halstead. He married Pauline Dempsey on August 26, 1946 at Pinckneyville and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of DuQuoin; son, Mark Halstead of DuQuoin; granddaughter, Summer Halstead of Arlington Heights and grandson, Blake Halstead of DuQuoin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Diana Lynn Halstead; brothers, Thomas Halstead, Clyde Halstead, Paul Halstead and John Halstead and sisters, Opal Hill, Vernice Appino, Margie Harsy and Mabel Halstead.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2001 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at DuQuoin.

Friends may make memorials to the First United Methodist Church of DuQuoin.

Military graveside rites were conducted by the DuQuoin VFW.

Taletha J. Woodbridge
Taletha J. Woodbridge, age 88, of Salina, Kansas, formerly of Pinckneyville, died on Wednesday, December 19, 2001.

Taletha was born in Perry County on February 22, 1913, the daughter of William and Julia (Huth) Vordtriede. She married B. Reed Woodbridge on January 10, 1949 in Piggott, Arkansas and he preceded her in death on January 27, 1972.

Taletha worked at the Pinckneyville Garment Factory as an instructor and was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara J. Coleman and husband Phil of Salina, Kan.; a son, Jon W. Woodbridge of Salina, Kan.; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services were at the Mueller Hill cemetery on Saturday, December 22 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Karen Stahr Terada officiating.

Visitation was at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home on Saturday from 12 until 12:45 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Salina Education Foundation or the First Nazarene Church in Salina, Kan.

Frank G. Weatherford
Frank G. Weatherford, 82, of rural Pinckneyville died at 4:50 a.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2001 at his home.

Frank was born December 10, 1919 in rural Pinckneyville, the son of John P. and Mary Jane (Masnker) Weatherford. He married Laura Hays on December 13, 1949 in Pinckneyville, and she survives.

During his lifetime, he served with the U.S. Army in World War II, was a member of the Galum Presbyterian Church and First United Presbyterian Church, both of Pinckneyville. He was a member of the Perry County Farm Bureau and the Thresherman's Association. He enjoyed watching Cardinal baseball and old movies and enjoyed yard work.

Survivors include his wife, Laura, of Pinckneyville; a son, Gary of Pinckneyville; three daughters, Sharon Higgerson and husband Jim of Pinckneyville, Judy Riedel and husband Carl of Pasadena, Tex., and Cassandra Weatherford of Chicago; a brother, Robert of Pinckneyville; two sisters, Mary Jane Weatherford of Pinckneyville and Junabeth Brunson and husband Fred of Belleville; four grandsons, Joshua and Caleb Higgerson of O'Fallon, Tim Klein and wife Angie of Kirkwood, Ill., and Ron Klein and wife Teresa of LaPorte, Tex.; four great-granddaughters, Alex, Ashton, Tara and Tanya Klein; and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Howard and John.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 31, 2001 at the First United Presbyterian Church of Pinckneyville with Rev. Tom Hobson officiating. Interment was in the Murdale Garden of Memories in Murphysboro.

Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Monday, then from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Carl H. Sprenger
Carl H. Sprenger, age 69, of Pinckneyville, died Sunday, December 2, 2001 in his home.

Carl was born February 20, 1932 in DuQuoin, the son of Frank F. and Gladys E. (Gerdes) Sprenger. He married Jeannette Ann Templeton on August 20, 1955 at the First United Presbyterian Church, Pinckneyville, and she preceded him in death on November 23, 2001. He was a member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict, a coal miner at Consolidated Coal Company Burning Star #2 Mine, a member of the UMWA, enjoyed gardening, crafting and working with his hands.

He is survived by a son, Tim and wife Jamie of St. Louis, Mo.; daughter, Melissa Sprenger of Nashville, Tenn. and a brother, Gary and wife Joyce of Pinckneyville.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the First United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tom Hobson officiating. Interment was in Mueller Hill cemetery, Pinckneyville.

Friends called at the First United Presbyterian Church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be made to the First Untied Presbyterian Church or the American Diabetes Association.

The Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth L. Steffers
Ruth L. Steffers, 79, 0f DuQuoin, passed away at 9:47 a.m. Monday, December 31, 2001 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Ruth was a homemaker and a member of the Sunfield Methodist Church.

She was born January 19, 1922 at Kenosha, Wisconsin, the daughter of Daniel C. and Lenore (Flatter) Davies. She married William F. Steffers on January 23, 1944 at Toledo, Ohio and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of DuQuoin; six sons, Fredrick Steffers of Colorado Springs, Colo., Michael Steffers of White Lake, Wis., Roger Steffers of Maurepas, La., Daniel Steffers of Atlanta, Ga., Robert Steffers of Panama City, Fla. and Alan Steffers of Robin Air Force Base, Ga.; two sisters, Margaret Hackbarth of Waupaca, Wis. and Ellen Shuemate of Kenosha, Wis.; a brother, Daniel Davies of Highland, Ind.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 3 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Jerry Dunn officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Cremation followed the funeral service.

Memorials may be made to Sunfield United Methodist Church.

Carl C. Smith
Carl C. Smith, 86, of DuQuoin, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2001 at 9:30 p.m. at his home.

Mr. Smith was a member of Faith Assembly, the VFW and the American Legion. He served in the Army during WW II.

Mr. Smith was born August 19, 1915 at Christopher, the son of Thomas C. and Dialtha (Webb) Smith.

He is survived by a niece, Betty Corso of DuQuoin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Graveside services were Thursday, December 6 at 11 a.m. at Harrison cemetery in Christopher with Rev. Keith Filer officiating.

Judy Sronce Sullivan
Judy Sronce Sullivan, 52, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of DuQuoin, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2001 at 10:30 p.m. in her home.

Mrs. Sullivan was a waitress and a member of South Mountain Southern Baptist Church.

She was born June 18, 1949 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Leslie and Bertha (Carpenter) Sronce. She married John Sullivan on August 10, 1988 at Las Vegas, Nevada.

Surviving are her husband, John Sullivan of Phoenix, Arizona; two sons, Kevin Uhls of Sesser and Keith Uhls and wife Lorri of DuQuoin; one brother, John Sronce of DuQuoin; two sisters, Phyllis Lee of DuQuoin and Dorothy Fann of DuQuoin; a daughter-in-law, Wendy Uhls of Melford, Ohio and six grandchildren, Marshal Uhls, Dylan Uhls, Levi Uhls, Shane & Samantha Eisenhauer and Zachary Uhls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.

A Memorial service was held Friday, December 21 at 2 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel in DuQuoin with Rev. Silas Morgan officiating. Burial was in Old DuQuoin cemetery.

Friends called at the Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Friday from 1 p.m. until services.

Jimmie L. Swallers
Jimmie L. Swallers, 72, of DuQuoin, passed away at 12:37 p.m. Sunday, December 9, 2001 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Jimmie was a retired 35-year employee of DuQuoin Packing Company. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of AFLCIO Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was born December 26, 1928 at DuQuoin, the son of Roy B. and Lucille (Wright) Swallers. He married Nila L. Poling on October 3, 1954 at the Presbyterian Church in DuQuoin and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of DuQuoin; two sons, Steven E. Swallers and wife Cheryl of DuQuoin and Stuart Dale Swallers of DuQuoin; special friend, Jammi Likes of DuQuoin; grandchildren, Rachel E. Swallers and Matt B. Swallers, both of DuQuoin; brother, Bob Swallers and wife Betty of DuQuoin and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 12 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Friends may make memorials to the Marshall Browning Hospital Tree of Lights or to the American Heart Association. Military graveside rites were conducted by the DuQuoin VFW Post 513.

Marcella S. Terry
Marcella S. Terry, age 98, of Pinckneyville, died in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit on Tuesday, December 25, 2001 at 11:45 a.m.

Marcella was born on August 25, 1903 in Pinckneyville, the daughter of George and Susann (Blum) Ritter. She married William Roy Terry on April 2, 1923 in Murphysboro and he preceded her in death on February 21, 1999. Marcella worked at Ritter's Cleaners in Pinckneyville and wa s a member of the Beaucoup Baptist Church in Pinckneyville. She was also a Gold Star Mother for the loss of her son, Bob, during World War II.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Terry and wife Delores of Pinckneyville; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Bob; four brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held at Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Thursday, December 27 at 1 p.m. with Brother Rob Mathis officiating. Interment was in Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gracie L. Veronda
Gracie L. Veronda, 91, of Valier, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2001 at 9:45 p.m. at Pinckneyville Health Center in Pinckneyville.

Mrs. Veronda was a homemaker. She was born May 21, 1910 in Coello to Martin and June (Uhls) Hill. She married Matt Veronda on November 4, 1925 at Coello and he preceded her in death on January 24, 1977.

Surviving is one sister, Marie Burtoff of Valier. Mrs. Veronda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services were Thursday, December 20 at 11 a.m. at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Father James Dlazine officiating. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery at Valier.

Friends called from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher.
