Violet May Holland
Mrs. Violet May Holland, 83, of Hastings, Mich., formerly of McLeansboro, died at 12:01 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2000, in the Pennock Hospital in Hastings, Mich.
She was born in Fife Lake, Mich., on June 12, 1916, to the late David and Grace (Elliot) Rancour.
She was a member of the Harrisburg United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Jeanne and her husband, the Rev. Rudolph Barnett of McLeansboro, Mrs. Barbara and her husband, Jack Travis of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Mrs. Dandra and her husband, Fred Gardner of Hastings, Mich.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Everett R. Taylor; two grandchildren; two brothers and a sister. The body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
Gholson Funeral Home of McLeansboro is in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy M. Dooley
Dorothy M. Dooley (Dollie Cozart), 86, of Eldorado, died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Eldorado Care Center. She was born June 25, 1913, in Equality, to the late John and Nettie (Williams) Allen.
Surviving are a son, John Loren and wife, Pamala Cozart of Gaylord, Mich.; a daughter, Georgia King of Tulsa, Okla; a stepson, Donald Cozart of New York; and numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; a nephew, Frank and wife, Margaret Allen of Eldorado.
She was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
Graveside services are 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2000, at Elmwood cemetery at Equality. Elder Bryan Murrow will officiate. There will be no visitation.
Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado is in charge of arrangements.
J.W. Alvey Jr.
J.W. Alvey Jr., 76, of 713 W. South St., Harrisburg, died at 11:15 p.m., Monday, May 8, 2000, at the home of his step-daughter, Mary Brimm.
He was a retired plumber, born in Harrisburg on Sept. 16, 1923, to the late John Wesley Alvey Sr. and the former Katherine Potter.
Mr. Alvey attended the Stonefort General Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, John and wife, Carolyn Alvey of Harrisburg; a daughter, Debra and her husband, Lee McMann of Camby, Ind.; a brother, Leonard and wife, Wynona; and a sister, Louise Barr of Peoria; nine step-children, Mary Lou Brimm, Louie Douglas, Doris McDowell, Peggy Hargrave, and Stanley Douglas, all of Harrisburg, Glendall Douglas of Bioloxi, Miss, Joann Vinyard of Rosiclare, Carolyn Collins of Marion, Ky., and Stanley Douglas, all of Harrisburg; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two wives, Erma Tarrant and Mary Douglas. A son, James Kenneth Alvey died on May 3, 2000; a daughter, Leanna Alvey in 1958; a sister, Opal Spangler, and a stepdaughter, Barbara Smith.
The body has been cremated. A graveside service is 11 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2000, at Big Ridge cemetery, with the Rev. Jeff Owens officiating. There is no visitation, and those attending should go directly to the cemetery.

Bessie P. Clark
Visitation for Mrs. Bessie P. Clark, 81, of Easley, S.C., formerly of Marion, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2000 at Reed Funeral Home in Harrisburg. Funeral and burial will be held at a later date at the Dillard Memorial Funeral Home in Pickens. Burial will be in the Hillcrest cemetery in Pickens.
The family request that flowers please be omitted and that memorials be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Services for Mrs. Inez L. Jacobs, 79, of Shawneetown, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2000, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Shawneetown. Fr. Mark Stec will officiate and burial will be in the Immaculate Conception cemetery at Shawneetown.
Elra Pegg
Elra Pegg, 73, rural, Golconda, died at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2000, in Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, Ky.

Jessie W. Abbott
Mrs. Jessie W. Abbott, 86, of New Haven, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at White County Skilled Care Nursing Home in Carmi. She was born Nov. 3, 1913, in New Haven to the late Manford and Anne (Higgins) Ellison.
She was married
in 1928 to Carl Abbott, who preceded her in death in January of this year. She was always a homemaker, a wife and a wonderful mother. This past March, she and Mr. Abbott would have been married
for 72 years.
She was a member of the Apostolic Church in New Haven and the Miracle Temple in Eldorado.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Anna L. (Musgraves) and Lloyd Flowers and Bonnie K. (McGhee) and Donnie Starks, all of Norris City; two sisters, Bessie Johnson of Evansville, Ind., and Martha Stewart of Carmi; 10 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Carl Delbert Jr., Troy Gene and John David Abbott, and eight brothers and sisters.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Cox and Son Funeral Home in New Haven, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2000. The Revs. Tommy Flewellen, Malene Farris and Sonny Holtzclaw will officiate. Burial will be in Union Ridge cemetery at New Haven.
Edna Marie Hughes
Mrs. Edna Marie Hughes, 75, of Tunnel Hill, died at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis.
She was born July 11, 1924, in Foreman, daughter of the late Guy and Nellie (Vaughn) Goddard.
She married
Everett S. Hughes on June 28, 1940, in Charleston, Mo. He preceded her in death Oct. 4, 1999.
Surviving are a daughter, Vickie Barger and her husband, Jack of Tunnel Hill; two granddaughters, Sheila Jennings and her husband, Victor and Jacquie Barger; two great-grandsons, Matthew and Jacob Jennings; five sisters, Evelyn Ross of Tunnel Hill, Demarris Payne of Vienna, Joan Boner of Matteson, Mary Hale of Augusta, Ga., and Nancy Tite of Ozark; and a brother, George Goddard of Karnak.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Bret Barger and a brother, Samuel Goddard. Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker. She was employed as a key punch operator by Sears in Chicago. She was a member of the Intercontinental Church of God congregation in Vienna. She was devoted to her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her great-grandsons.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2000, at the Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Elder Wendell Yeary will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery, near the Delwood community in Pope County.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Saturday at the Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
Charles R. Gwaltney
Charles R. Gwaltney, 68, 916 Webber St., Eldorado, died at 3 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2000, at his home.
He was born April 16, 1932, in Illinois, to the late Ishmael and Lucille (Barton) Gwaltney.
Mr. Gwaltney was a mechanic, employed by International Harvester. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the Eagles Lodge and American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Alice Gwaltney; a son, Traci Gwaltney of Chester; four daughters, Mrs. Dean (Charlene) Wiseman of Raleigh, Tammy Gwaltney, Mrs. Kevin (Kim) Brummett, and Robin Gwaltney; two brothers, Eddie Joe Gwaltney and Junior Gwaltney, both of Eldorado; a sister, Leona Burgess of Flora; and five grandchildren, Kevin Gwaltney, Christy Wiseman, Shadrach Wiseman, Brooke Wagner, and Blake Gwaltney.
He was also preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 5, 2000, at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado, where friends may call Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. The Rev. Bill Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at Equality.
Gladys Lorene Hicks
Gladys Lorene Hicks, 92, of 628 Largent St., Harrisburg, died Friday, June, 2, 2000, at her home. She was born to the late Alonzo and Nellie Abney in Mauldin, Mo.
She married
Cranville "Jeff" Hicks, who preceded her in death.
Surving are a son, Melvin and wife, Rhonda Hicks of Salem; three daughters, Phyllis and husband, Charles Gray of Sanford, Judy and husband, Bill Horning of Harrisburg, and Venita Tanner of Harrisburg; a brother, Cecil Abney of Harrisburg; a sister-in-law, Wanda Abney of Harrisburg; and a sister, Louise Richardson of Sesser.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Hicks and Cloo Hicks; four brothers, Clyde Abney, Marion Abney, Orval Abney and William Abney; three sisters, Pansy Abney, Daisy Campbell and Pearl Moffitt; and a niece, Loveda Fearheiley.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday, June 5, 2000, a J.M. Weirauch Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg where friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Rev. Lyle Kulp and Rev. Paul Alumbaugh will officiate and burial will be at Sunset Lawn cemetery in Harrisburg.
