Dorothy L. Spencer
Dorothy L. Spencer, 78, of 405 Herbert St., Harrisburg, died 7:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Wasson Apostolic Church with the Rev. Bob Prather officiating. Burial will be in Liberty cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at J.M. Weirauch Funeral Home in Harrisburg.
She was born July 20, 1923, in Henderson, Ky., to Sheridan and Dora Stone. She was the widow first of Ferman Ivie and then of Jay Spencer.
She was a member of Wasson Apostolic Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Flora Childers of Harrisburg; a sister, Hattie Stone of Harrisburg; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Emily, Iva Nell and Lucille Stone, and one brother, Harrison Stone.
Gregory K. Hanks
Gregory K. Hanks, 38, of Harrisburg, died 8:40 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at his residence.
Services were held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg with the Rev. J.R. Sellers officiating. Burial was in Sunset Lawn cemetery. Visitation was 11 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home.
He was born May 31, 1963 in Gary, Ind. to Carol (Gates) Hanks and the late Jack Hanks. He married
the former Melodie Moser on May 5, 1991.
He was a laborer in the heating and air conditioning business and a member of United Pentecostal Church in Harrisburg. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a brother, Jack A. Hanks of Harrisburg, and a granddaughter, Jaimee Partain of Harrisburg.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Roger B. Hanks, and his daughter, Buffy Partain. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the family and left at the funeral home.
John R. Murphy
John R. Murphy, 90, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Fountain View Nursing Home in Eldorado.
He was born May 20, 1911, to John Wes and Sophia Murphy.
He received a Master of Science degree in administration and supervision from Southern Illinois University before spending 38 years in education. He retired in 1971 after serving 22 years as teacher and principal at Muddy Grade School, nine years as assistant Saline County superintendent of schools, three years as superintendent of the Eldorado Unit School System, and four years as Dean of Southeastern Illinois College, where he was instrumental in establishing the school.
He was active in civic affairs as well, serving on the Eldorado City Council as commissioner of finance for the city of Eldorado, as mayor of Eldorado, and as Saline County Chairman of the American Red Cross. He was also active in the First Baptist Church for over 40 years as a former Sunday school teacher and superintendent.
He was a member of the York Rite Bodies, the Scottish Rite, and the Shrine. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge and received his 32nd degree. He was honored by the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite by being granted an honorary 33rd degree. He served for two years as the grand master of the State of Illinois Masonic Lodge. In addition, he was selected chairman of the Grand Masters of North America.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marilouise (Kelley); daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Bob Oliver of Lake Ozark, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Jack Milligan of Ridgway; one sister, Margaret Murphy of Olive Branch, Miss.; five grandchildren, Beth Oliver and Cheryl Sweet of Union Grove, Wis., Jarrell Oliver of Bel Air, Md., Mike Milligan of Evansville, Ind. and Amy Graber of Montgomery, Ind., and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado. Burial will be in Lindale cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at the funeral home. Masonic rites will follow the visitation.
Dennis E. Diefenbach
Dennis E. Diefenbach, 46, of St. Louis, formerly of Harrisburg, died 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at St. Louis.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Palestine Church with the Rev. John Hancock and the Rev. Mike Davis officiating. Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born Sept. 24, 1955, in Pana to Edward and the late Floetta (Dowdy) Diefenbach.
He was employed by Peabody Coal Company for 20 years and was a member of First Baptist Church in Harrisburg. In addition to his father, he is survived by two sons, Josh Diefenbach of Jacksonville, Fla., Cory Diefenbach of Little Rock, Ark.; two stepbrothers, a stepsister, two sisters, Darla Barger and Tara Carney, both of Eldorado; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins; and two grandchildren, C.M. Diefenbach and Dakota James Diefenbach.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathy Diefenbach.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Palestine church and cemetery.
Donald E. Bennett
Donald E. Bennett, 77, of McLeansboro, died 8:25 p.m. Jan. 26, 2002, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Robert Sefried and Bro. Scott Webb officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Nebo cemetery near McLeansboro. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at the funeral home.
He is survived by a sister, two nephews, three nieces, five great-nephews, five great-nieces, and several great-great-nieces and nephews.
Lorene Schuster
Lorene Schuster, 77, of Route 1, Dahlgren, died 8:10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at St. John's Catholic Church in Piopolis with Msg. Joseph Lawler officiating. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery in Piopolis. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
She is survived by a son, a daughter, and four grandchildren.
Charles 'Crow' McDancy
Charles "Crow" McDancy, 61, of Carrier Mills, died 1:26 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Lakeview cemetery in Carrier Mills with the Rev. Ownly Williams officiating. There will be no visitation. All friends should go directly to the cemetery. Felty Funeral Hme in Carrier Mills is in charge of the arrangements.
Franklin Dale 'Frank' Sisky
Franklin Dale "Frank" Sisky, 68, of Harrisburg, died 3:47 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002.
He was born in Harrisburg on Nov. 26, 1933, to the late Walter and Josephine (Cooley) Sisky. He graduated from Harrisburg Township High School, class of 1952. He was employed as a mental health technician at Choate Mental Health.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and had been previously employed by B.W. Rude Motors, and by Kenneth Wiley, both in Harrisburg. Frank was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Harrisburg.
Family members include a son, Robert Sisky of Marion; a sister, Mary (Larry) Bowers of Harrisburg; and two brothers, Ray (Clara) Sisky and John Sisky, all of Harrisburg. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Sisky and a half-brother, Walter Sisky Jr. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg.
Funeral mass will be offered 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Harrisburg. Fr. Don Abell will officiate.
Interment will be in Sunset Hill cemetery in Harrisburg with full military honors given by Carrier Mills and Harrisburg American Legions.
Virginia Carney
Virginia Carney, 78, of Hazelwood, Mo., formerly of New Haven, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Haven Manor Nursing Home in Florissant, Mo.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Cox & Son Funeral Home in New Haven with the Rev. Wade Halva officiating. Burial will be in Union Ridge cemetery near New Haven. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Carney, a son, a daughter, two stepdaughters, a sister, two grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Jack Ryan Allen
Jack Allen, 16, of Harrisburg, died 10:40 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Eddyville.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg with the Rev. Loy Barger officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery in Delwood. Visitation is 9 a.m. to service time Thursday at the funeral home.
He was born May 27, 1985, in Jonesboro, Ga. to Troy W. Allen and Julie Stewart, who survive.
He was a student.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepmother, Stephanie Allen of Delwood; his stepfather, Jamie Minix of Redding, Calif.; a brother, Travis Allen of Redding, Calif.; a sister, Kristin Gervias of Delwood; his grandparents, David and Sandra Allen of Delwood and Naomi Stewart of Redding, Calif.; and a great-uncle, Earl Bailey of Harrisburg.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Glen and Ruby Barger.
