Nora Marie Lewis
Nora Marie Lewis, 77, of 7585 Battleford Road, Stonefort, died 8 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2002, at her residence.
Services were held 10 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills with the Rev. Darrell Ford officiating. Burial was in Joyner cemetery in Stonefort. Visitation was 8 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home.
She was born August 15, 1924, in Bernie, Mo. to James Edward and Eliza (Trammel) Duke. She married
Joel Lewis, who preceded her in death in May 1997.
She was retired from Amax Coal Corp. and was a Methodist by faith.
She is survived by four stepchildren, Richard Lewis of Stonefort, Jerry Lewis of Washingt¿n, Diane DeLap of Eldorado and Joel D. Lewis of Stonefort; three brothers, Bob Duke of Portland, Ore.; George and Melvin Duke of Johnston City; two sisters, Ethel Land of Maynard, Ark. and Alma Curtis of San Antonio, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a great-grandchild.
William A. 'Bill' Abate Jr.
William A. "Bill" Abate Jr., 32, of rural Vienna, passed away unexpectedly 4:25 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna with the Rev. Leo Hall officiating. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was born May 13, 1970, in Chicago, to Donna (Stone) and the late William A. Abate Sr. He was united in marriage to Jennifer Sue Huff on May 26, 1990, at Vienna First Baptist Church, and she survives.
Bill was a student at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He had also attended Shawnee Community College and was a 1988 graduate of Vienna High School. He was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He had formerly owned and operated Vienna Video and had worked in the groundskeeping department at the Union County Country Club in Anna. He attended the Crossroads Bible Church at Norris City. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, bowhunting and fishing. He was an avid outdoorsman. He was a wonderful husband and a loving and devoted dad.
In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by his children, Hunter Daniel Abate and Julie Grace Abate, both at home; a sister, Anna Massey of Florida; three brothers, Andy and Joe Abate, both of Irving, Texas and John Abate of Sikeston, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; an uncle, Sam (Ann) Abate of Buford, Ga.; his extended family, Ray and Kay Huff, Sue and Earl Whitler and Julie Huff; and a dear friend, Neil Bundren.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to an educational fund for Billl's children at the V.C.C. Credit Union, 1895 state Route 146 East, Vienna, Ill., 62995. Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Loyd D. Nicholson
Loyd D. Nicholson, 78, of 406 N. Thompson St., Carrier Mills, died 9:20 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2002.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills with the Rev. Joey Dunning officiating. Burial will be in Salem cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was born Dec. 18, 1923, in Stonefort, to the late Alvin and Clara (Evetts) Nicholson. On Jan. 18, 1947, he married
Rosemary Roper, who survives.
He was a World War II Purple Heart Army Veteran, a 19-year employee of Lloyd L. Parker Furniture Store, retired Sahara miner and owner/operator of Nicholson Carpet Service until his retirement. He was a member of Blazing Star Lodge No. 458 and American Legion Post No. 364.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Tim Nicholson of Carrier Mills; two daughters, Tampra (Dale) Williams and Pam (Greg) Absher, all of Carrier Mills; two sisters, Margaret Rosenkilde of Walnut Creek, Calif. and Velma (Webb) Hall of Stonefort; and three grandchildren, Melissa Williams, and Geoffrey and Barrett Absher.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Everett and Vernell and Earl Nicholson and five sisters, Ruby Russell, Thelma Whiteside, Ruth Church, Bonnie Paden and Betty Richerson.

Grace P. Reeder
Grace P. Reeder, 97, of Harrisburg, formerly of the Crossville and Carmi area, died 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Oneda Haney of Harrisburg She was born August 10, 1904, in Overton County, Tenn., the daughter of Tim S. and Rebecca (Kennedy) Allred. She married
Martin Flowers in Sept. 3, 1922 in Tennessee, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1933. She then married
Oscar Reeder in August 1942 and he preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1969.
Mrs. Reeder was a homemaker. She was a member of the Crossville Church of Christ.
She is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Oneda and John Haney of Harrisburg, Ava Sutton of Medina, Ohio, and Glenda Fleetwood of McLeansboro; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Leola and Wendell Camden of Akron, Ohio and Arlene and Eddie Xanders of Mt. Dora, Fla.; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Junior and Elsie Reeder of Akron, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Lona Flowers of Akron, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Winningham of Allgood, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, O.D. Flowers, one brother, Alfred allred and two sisters, Ava Wisdom and Colva Winningham.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Stokes Chapel cemetery.
Max L. Quick
Max L. Quick died on June 26, 2002, at Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville, Tenn. He was 82 years old.
The son of Marshall Quick and Elizabeth McClellan Quick, he was born Dec. 19, 1919, in Eldorado. Former Master Sergeant Quick was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and later served as a United Nations mediator in Palestine under Dr. Ralph Bunche. After Korea, ha managed NCO clubs at Army bases in Europe and the United States, including Fort. Campbell. An avid shooter, Mr. quick was a member of both the U.S. Army Marksmanship Training Unit at Fort Benning and the all American Skeet Team. In 1966 he became the first shooter to ever break 100 straight in each of hte four regular skeet events as well as 100 straight at International in a single year. He was an active member of the Eagle Skeet Club at Fort Campbell until the time of his death.
Mr. Quick is survived by his wife, Alma G. Quick of Clarksville, Tenn.; a son, Douglas E. Quick; a daughter, Lucinda Quick Vogelei, both of Atlanta; a brother, William E. Quick of Marissa; a sister, Evelyn Sue Cowell of Harrisburg; and nieces and nephews.
Cremation is planned. Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Quick's name to Alzheimer Research or the Humane Society of Clarksville, 614 Spring St., Clarksville, Tenn. 37040.
Maxine Ethel Stephens
Maxine Ethel Stephens, 81, of Saline Care Center, died 10:08 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2002, 2002, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Services were held 10 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Burial was in Delwood cemetery.
Visitation was 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2002, at the funeral home.
She is survived by a daughter, a son, six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Beatrice Poyner
Beatrice Poyner, 88, of 160 Dewey St. Apt. 206, Eldorado, died 8:15 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2002, at Fountain View Nursing Home.
A graveside memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Wolf Creek cemetery in Eldorado with the Rev. Tom Flewellen officiating. Arrangements are in the charge of Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado.
Georgia Raybourn
Georgia Raybourn, 95, of Raleigh, died 6 p.m. Thursday, July 4, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia with the Rev. Nolan Smith officiating. Burial will be in Raleigh Masonic cemetery. Visitation is noon to service time Sunday at the funeral home.
She was born August 24, 1906, in Raleigh, to the late George and Katie (Haynes) Thornberry. On Oct. 30, 1928, she married
Stanley Raybourn, who preceded her in death.
She was a member of Raleigh Baptist Church and a retired assembly line worker for Ford Motor Co. She is survived by a nephew, Keith Deal and wife Betty of Galatia; and a niece, Marilyn Thornberry of Harrisburg.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
Beatrice Fromm
Beatrice Fromm, 88, of Enfield, died Thursday afternoon, July 4, 2002, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. She was born Nov. 2, 1913, in Enfield, the daughter of Lawrence and Frances (Driscoll) Unfried. She married
Wilfred Fromm on Oct. 10, 1940, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1998.
She is survived by two sons, Jim Fromm and Bob Fromm, both of Enfield; and one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Tim Moye of Eldorado; and one granddaughter, Julie and John Holloway of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Lawrence Unfried of Enfield and Willard and Beth Unfried of Evansville; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Genevieve Kares of Evansville, Mary Frances and Jerry Ellison of Newburgh, Ind., Margaret and Harold Stahl of Carmi and Teresa and Obert Viland of Lancaster, Penn.; and two sisters-in-law, Fern Unfried of Carmi and Rose Ellen Unfried of Evansville. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Leo, Ambrose and Hubert; and one sister, Rose Basinger.
Mrs. Fromm was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Enfield and the Altar and Rosary Society.
Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Enfield.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield. The rosary will be held at 7:45 p.m. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Church cemetery in Enfield.
Charles H. Buse
Charles H. Buse, 87, of 510 Broadway Normal, died 4:50 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Normal Manor Care.
Services were held 2 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2002, at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City with the Rev. Bruce Bolin-Ghitalla officiating. Burial was in the Mason City cemetery. Visitation was 1 p.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home.
Esther Taborn Jackson
Esther Taborn Jackson was born August 5, 1903 in Carrier Mills, to the proud parents of Joe Dennis and Mary Taborn. She was the first of eight sisters and three brothers. She went home to glory on June 27, 2002.
Esther found Christ at an early age. Esther was united in holy matrimony to J.D. Norton and to this union a daughter was born, Irene Jeanette. In 1934, they moved to St. Louis, Mo. Later in life she married
Henry Jackson. Husband Henry and daughter Irene Granger preceded her in death. Esther was active in the Eastern Star in her earlier years.
She leaves to cherish her memory a loving granddaughter, Rose Michele Warfield Toney, of San Francisco; a grandson, James Granger III of St. Louis; great-granddaughters Robyn Nichole Diles (husband Michael) of Richmond, Calif., Winde Irene Toney of San Francisco; great-great-grandchildren Anias and Armani Diles; sisters Anna Taborn Nichols, Rose Taborn Holman and Mary Taborn North; a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Cunningham Moore Funeral Home in St. Louis. Interment is 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeview cemetery in Carrier Mills.
