Howard V. Ledbetter
Howard V. Ledbetter, a resident of Romeo, Mich. for 30 years and formerly of East Pointe, Mich., passed away Sept. 20, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Clinton Township.
He was born April 28, 1920, the son of Goodliep and Dora (Abraham) Ledbetter in Harrisburg. Howard served in the Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He married
Blanche F. Patterson in June 1949 in Harrisburg. He was a life member of the A.F. and A.M. No. 41 where he served as tyler for many years and former member of East Detroit Lodge A.F. and A.M. No. 589. Howard was a member of the VFW Post of Roseville No. 2358 and a member of the Teamsters. He worked at Peninsular Steel in Warren, retiring in 1973.
He leaves to mourn his beloved daughters, Sheila (Paul) Lyons of Pond Gap, W.Va. and Brenda (Joe) Mullins of Sterling Heights, Mich.; four beloved grandchildren, Aaron and Sarah Mullins, Becky Lyons and Amy (Kevin) Starcher and soon-to-be one great-grandbaby. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Blanche in 1993, and brothers, Norman, Vernon and Bill.
Visitation will be held 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, with a Masonic memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Roth-Muir Funeral Home in Romeo, Mich. with Dr. Gary R. Glanville of the Romeo United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be made at Cadillac Memorial cemetery in Clinton Township.
Memorials may be made to the Romeo Masonic Lodge. Arrangements were entrusted to the Roth-Muir Funeral Home.
Bernedene Jackson Warren
Bernedene Jackson Warren, 87, of Pensacola, Fla. and Coral Springs, Fla. passed away Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 10, 2002.
Mrs. Warren was born on a farm near Carrier Mills on Aug. 24, 1915 to the late Hugh and Ollie Jackson. She was a 1934 graduate of Carrier Mills High School and worked in business for several years prior to marrying her husband of 53 years in 1942. She was a homemaker and Navy wife, keeping a home for her family as well as numerous family friends who were warmly welcomed into her home. She was acclaimed by all who sat at her table to be a superb cook, she was also an avid and successful gardener, filling her yard with colorful daylilies, azaleas and camelias. As a Navy wife, she lived in Pensacola from 1948 to 1951 and from 1957 to the present.
Mrs. Warren was the widow of the late William J. Warren Sr., a retired career Navy man, and the beloved mother of two sons.
She is survived by two sons, William J. Warren Jr. of Pensacola and Golden Co. and Philip M. Warren of Coral Springs, Fla. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Kathleen Warren; grandson, Michael J. Warren; granddaughter, Jennifer P. Warren, all of Coral Springs; a sister, Wilma Grable and a sister-in-law, Wilma Clark, both of Harrisburg.
Visitation was 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at All Faiths Chapel, NAS, Pensacola with the Rev. Fred Zobel offociating.
Interment was 11 a.m. Monday at Barrancas National cemetery.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Nora Belle Brittain
Nora Belle Brittain, 65, of Harrisburg, died 11:25 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Harrisburg.
Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Ledford cemetery near Harrisburg with the Rev. Ray Clayton offficiating. Those attending should go directly to the cemetery. Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born Oct. 4, 1936 in Johnson City, Tenn. to Robert E. and Martha E. (Laws) Young. On. Dec. 2, 1953, she married
Durward "Dewey" Brittain, who survives.
She was a retired cook at West Side School and a member of the Land Street Church of God.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Daniel (Party) Brittain of Harrisburg and Dewayne W. (Jann) Brittain of Matthews, N.C.; three daughters, Debra (Ed) Nugent, Carolyn (Rick) King and LaCrecia Hess, all of Harrisburg; 17 grandchildren; eight grandchildren; four brothers, David (Joyce) Young, Jerry (Louise) Young and Robert Young, all of Westland, Mich. and Dana (Jean) Young of Florida; three sisters, Betty (Dick) Peters and Carol (Ray) Clayton, both of Jonesboro, Tenn. and Wilma Rose (Jim) Molitor of Phoenix, Ariz. and a brother-in-law, Gordon (Edith) Brittain of Cave-in-Rock.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dianne Carrier Rhamann.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Jack Dudley
Jack Dudley, 59, of 14 Acorn Drive, Harrisburg, died 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at his residence.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg with the Rev. Jack Hood officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Garden cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was born Nov. 19, 1942 in Harrisburg to Elfie (Duke) and the late Aaron Dudley.
He was a laborer at the Coleman Tri-County Workshop in Norris City. He attended the First Church of God in Harrisburg and was an award-winning Special Olympian.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Donna (Darrel) Walker of Harrisburg; a brother, David (Dawn) Dudley of Galatia; several aunts, uncles, three nieces, two nephews and a grandniece.
The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Saline Association for Retarded Citizens or to the First Church of God Building Fund.
Janet Reid
Janet Reid, 62, of 120 Vine St., Stonefort, died 2 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at her residence.
At her request, she will be cremated. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at the Christ Lutheran Church in Harrisburg with the Rev. Raymond Heilener officiating. Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born May 29, 1940 in Champaign to Edwin and Ida Mae (Thompson) Ettling.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Harrisburg. She was a retired school teacher, where she taught for close to 20 years at the Carrier Mills-Stonefort Elementary Schools.
She is survived by a daughter, Christy Hooper of Whitehouse, Tenn.; a son, Doug Reid of Kingwood, Texas; a sister, Marilyn Burklow of Harrisburg and four grandchildren, Will Hooper and Christopher Hooper, both of Whitehouse, Tenn. and Bethany Reid and Kristen Reid, both of Kingswood, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Carrier Mills-Stonefort Elementary music department.
Charles F. Wathen Sr.
Charles F. Wathen Sr., 83, Arlington Heights, formerly of Equality, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002 at Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Equality. Father Mark Stec will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. until time of service Monday. Vickery Funeral Chapel of Equality is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born Feb. 3, 1919 in Equality to Joseph L. and "Pet" L. (Baldwin) Wathen. On July 2, 1949, he married
Florence L. Kutcosky, who preceded him in death.
He was retired from Allstate Insurance Company and a member of Holy Cross Church in Deerfield. He was a World War II Navy veteran, a choir member of Holy Cross Church and Villa Adalarata.
He is survived by three sons, Charles (Marcey Kamen) Wathen, John (Debbie) Wathen and Robert (Lisa) Wathen; three daughters, Carol (Jim) Ludwig, Jayne (Chip) Bromann and Janet (Alfred) Gastfield; one brother, Robert (Freda) Wathen of Equality; and 14 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rosamond Wathen; three brothers, Cedric, Joseph and John Wathen; and a son, Joseph Wathen.
Sabina (Benny) Kruep
Sabina (Benny) Kruep, 85, of Eldorado, died 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at Fountain View Nursing Home in Eldorado.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldorado with Father Don Abell officiating.
Burial wiill be in St. Mary's cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado with a prayer service at 8 p.m.
She was born Sept. 3, 1916 in Eldorado to August and Margaret (Bartok) Bartok Sr. She married
Edwin Kruep, who preceded her in death in 1969.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldorado and the St. Mary's Altar Society.
She is survived by a sister, Margaret Wenzel of Eldorado; a sister-in-law, Georgia Bartok of O'Fallon; three nieces, Margaret Ann and Dale Langford of Harrisburg, Mary and Jerry Fox of Raleigh and Gloria Kramer of Decatur; a nephew, August (Mary) Bartok Jr. of O'Fallon; and several great-nieces and -nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Steve and August Bartok, and a sister, Irene Hamilton.
Ethel Pauline Wenzel
Ethel Pauline Wenzel, 82, of Equality, died 8:20 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Autumn Hills Nursing Home in Friendswood, Texas.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Equality Christian Center with the Rev. Allen Porter officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in Equality. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at the Equality Christian Center. Arrangements are in the charge of Earl Jones Funeral Home in Equality.
She was born May 7, 1920 in Ridgway to James F. and Mary (McDaniel) Parker. On Dec. 28, 1940, she married
Charles A. "Todd" Wenzel, who preceded her in death Jan. 17, 1998.
She is survived by a daughter, Sue Montgomery of Houston, Texas; two sons, Charles "Bob" Wenzel of Equality and Rod Wenzel of Junction; two sisters, Rosa Wargel of Evansville, Ind. and Shirley Woods of Equality; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Bertis Wenzel; two brothers, Bill Parker and Bertis Logan Parker and a sister, Helen Certain.
Martin Easter
Martin Easter, 77, of Karnak, formerly of McLeansboro, died 3:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, Ky.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at Glenview Garden of Memory cemetery near McLeansboro with the Rev. Robert Sefried officiating. Visitation is 11 a.m. to service time Thursday at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
He is survived by a daughter, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
