Opal Shelton
Opal Shelton, 82, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Indianapolis, Ind. Services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Apostolic Church of God in Harrisburg. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery in Carrier Mills.
Visitation is 11 a.m. to service time at the church.
She was the widow of Harvey Shelton. She is survived by two daughters and a son.
Dr. John E. Doyle
Dr. John E. Doyle, 93, of Ridgway, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at his residence. Born to the late John T. and Blanche (Davis) Doyle in Pennsboro, W. Va. on Oct. 20, 1909, John was a top athlete, soldier and medical physician during his lifetime. He was the captain of the University of West Virginia football team in 1931 and captain of the basketball team in 1932. He was selected as a member of Sports Illustrated Magazine 25 Year All-American Football team. John attended Medical College of Virginia at Richmond and graduated from Chicago Medical School. On Aug. 15, 1942, he married
Joyce Clark, who preceded him in death on April 9, 1981. When World War II began in 1941 he entered into the U.S. Army and joined the medical corps. He hit the Utah beach during D-Day. He received seven battle stars, a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He returned to the States as an honored hero in 1945. He began his medical practice in this area on Jan. 1, 1946.
Dr. Doyle was active in the community as a charter member of Ridgway Lions Club, served for 10 years on the village board, an honorary Life Member Third Degree L.A. Lambert 1581 and Charter Member Fourth Degree L.A. Lambert 0232 of Knights of Columbus, a member of Ridgway American Legion Post No. 596 and member of the St. Joseph Church in Ridgway.
He is survived by a daughter, Cynthia and John Drone of Racine, Wis.; a son, Jack Doyle of Ridgway; two granddaughters, Alison Drone of Washington, D.C. and Jennifer Drone of San Francisco, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one daughter, Patti Doyle. Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Ridgway, with prayer services at 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ridgway. Officiating will be Father Mark Stec. Interment will be at St. Joseph cemetery with military services conducted by Ridgway American Legion Post No. 596.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SIC nursing program in his memory.
Austin Widney Carr
Austin Widney Carr, 78, of 106 W. State St., Harrisburg, died 2:04 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
As per his wishes, the body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the charge of Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg.
He was born Feb. 24, 1924 in Minooka to Austin Lee and Kathryn (Hoy) Carr. On Nov. 23, 1948, he married
the former Rose Ellen Flavin, who survives.
He was a retired maintenance worker for the Illinois Department of Tranportation and an Army veteran with the occupation forces in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, John A. (Sue) Carr of Harrisburg; a daughter, Madelynne Carr of Harrisburg; five grandchildren, James (Vanessa) Garcia of Dixon, Neil and Melanie Carr of Harrisburg, Michael Worden of Rialto, Calif. and Margaret (Elvis) Siguenza of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and two great-grandchildren, Mercedes and Larissa Garcia.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Worden.
Memorial donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
Leroy Rasch
Leroy Rasch, 88, of 165 Walnut Grove Road, Harrisburg, died 11:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Reed Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Miller officiating. Burial will be in Lindale cemetery near Eldorado. Visitation is noon to service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
He was born May 23, 1914 in St. Louis, Mo. to Paul Martin and Marie Anna (Springer) Rasch. On July 18, 1964, he married
the former Avanell Steapleton, who survives.
He was a mechanical engineer for Stewart-Warner Company in Springfield. He was a WWII commander in the U.S. Navy and a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Harrisburg.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Paul (Desiree) Rasch of Harrisburg and two grandchildren, Dylan Lee Rasch and Keelin Dane Rasch.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Walnut Grove Baptist Church.
Eldon Prince
Eldon Prince, 86, of Mt. Vernon, formerly of Hamilton County, died 5:58 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Gary Whipple officiating. Burial will be in Bethel cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Visitation is 10 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
He is survived by a brother, a sister, three nephews and a niece.
Thelma Sills
Thelma Sills, 62, of Iuka, died 2 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Salem Township Hospital.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Salem cemetery in Salem. Visitation is 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem.
She is survived by three sons, a daughter and a daughter-in-law.
Aaron Ellis
Aaron Ellis, 37, of 509 W. Lincoln St., died 12:07 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at St. Louis University Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, the former Debbie Rodgers.
Millard E. Curry
Millard E. Curry, 78, of Metropolis, passed away at his home Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis with the Rev. Richard Curry officiating. Burial will follow in the Round Springs cemetery. The American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside rites.
Friends may call at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002.
Mr. Curry is survived by his wife, Helen Curry; a daughter, Wilmetta (Floyd) Cougill of Metropolis; two sons, David E. Curry of Metropolis and Millard E. (Doris) Curry Jr. of Staunton; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Edwards of Lawrenceville and Lucy
Houze of Ft. McCoy, Fla. and a brother, Bill Curry of Shawneetown.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Etta (Richardson) Curry, and one infant son.
He was a member of the Army Air Corps and a veteran of World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.

Hazel E. Cook
Hazel E. Cook, 89, of 1118 E. Sloan St., Harrisburg, died 6:24 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Harrisburg Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 3, 1913 in Ledford to Herman E. and Ethel Cinda (Bolin) Mullinix. On May 3, 1958, she married
James Roscoe Cook, who preceded her in death on April 27, 1973. She was a secretary for operating engineers, a member of Gaskins City Missionary Baptist Church, Saline County Genealogy and the Pride of Arrow Rebekah Lodge.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia M. Cummins of Harrisburg; a sister, Mary (Ed) Johnson of Creede, Colo.; two stepgranddaughters, Anna (John) Greene of Rockport, Ind. and Sheila (David) Moser of Evansville, Ind.; two great-stepgrandchildren, Christine Greene and Jade Moser; two nieces, Sharon Van Vorous of Union Grove, Wis. and Lana Sismeros of Monta Vista, Colo. and a nephew, Mike (Barbara) Mullinix of Manila, Ariz.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, James A. Greene; a brother, LeRoy "Chick" Mullinix; a sister, Jessie Mae Randolph and two brothers in infancy.
Ruby Lucille Buckles
Ruby Lucille Buckles, 82, formerly of Harrisburg, died Nov.16, 2002, in Indio, Calif.
Ruby was born Dec. 14, 1919 in Harrisburg. Her parents were Cecil and Eleanor Simpson. She is survived by her husband, Vern Buckles, and by her two daughters, Kathy Morgan and Pamela Buckles-Masen, and her grandson, Justin Masen.
Vernell Davidson
Vernell Davidson, 97, of 251 Belden Ave., Elmhurst, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at his residence.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado with the Rev. Eugene Black officiating. Burial will be in Lindale Memorial Gardens. Visitation is noon to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
He is survived by a daughter, a brother, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Opal Dearing
Opal Dearing, 91, of Harrisburg, died 3:39 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Ebenezer Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dean Guye officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at the funeral home.
She was born Feb. 4, 1911, in Williamson County to the late Grover C. and Daisy (Strike) Smith. On Jan. 23, 1932, she married
Ewell Dearing in Franklin County, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1961.
She was a 71-year member of the Ebenezer Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was ordained a ruling elder in August 1985, was a Sunday school teacher for several years and superintendent for several years. She was a retired LPN. She had worked for Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Union Hospital in West Frankfort and the west side of American Beauty Nursing Home in West Frankfort.
She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (Jim) Dunn of Harrisburg; two grandchildren, Danny (Emily) Dunn and Steve (Julie) Dunn, both of Harrisburg; and six great-grandchildren, Jessica, Sarah, Jessica, Audrey, Cody and Hillary, all of Harrisburg.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Gerald David Dearing; a brother, Everett Smith; and a sister, Ruby Munday.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
