Gaskins and Marian Jean (Todd) Gaskins. She attended school in Harrisburg, graduating Harrisburg Township High School in 1964, along with certain classmates who were to remain her lifelong friends. Shortly after graduation Jan married
Ron Morse, and their son, Ryan, was born in 1966 at Cherry Point, N.C. Jan and Ron parted, and Jan returned to Harrisburg to work several years for her father as a dental assistant. In 1978 Jan and Ryan moved to Kansas City, Mo., where she resided until June of 2000, when she returned to Harrisburg with Ryan to live out her remaining years. Although Jan knew she had only a short life remaining, she lived each day to the fullest and brightened many lives. The last six months of her life Jan was confined to her bed. During this period she had loyal caregivers including Nita Linch, Claudia Libbie, Patsy Jones, Thelma Milligan, and most recently Phyllis Parish and Kathy Seely. With the help of these angels of compassion Jan's days and nights were filled with joy and peace. Because of Jan's strong and optimistic spirit, she enjoyed numerous visitors to her home daily. These visits never failed to inspire and brighten the lives of those who dropped by. A few of her most faithful visitors included her life long friends and classmates, Katie (Miley) Disney, Sally (Davis) Washburn, Sandra Smith, and Janet (Durfee) Masinelli, as well as her friends, Connie Frazier, Randi Smith, Dr. Roger Lyons and John (Spider) Pearson. Also, distance did not hinder Jan's strong friendships with Rhonda Hughes, Debbie Martin, Patti Ayers and Karen Muro who maintained frequent contact throughout her illness. The numerous friends which Jan acquired during her life speaks of her magic qualities and ceaseless interest in others.
Jan leaves her son, Ryan Scott (Morse) Rister; her brother, Russell Gaskins, and sister-in-law, Darlene Gaskins; along with her nephews, Garrett Gaskins and Grady Gaskins. Jan will also be missed by her aunts, Wilma (Bert) Gaskins and Anna Mae (Bob) Gaskins; and the cousins which she grew up with, and returned to be near at the end of her life, Susie (Gaskins) Lehman, Webb Gaskins and his wife, Pam, Wayne Gaskins and Katie Gaskins, all of Harrisburg, along with her cousins, Susie (Gaskins) Van Meter of Florida and David Gaskins of Ohio. Jan also leaves many friends and acquaintances whose lives she touched while residing in Kansas City, as well as her many co-workers and friends at Multi Service Company, where she was employed as a customer service representative. Through her employment Jan had the opportunity to travel throughout many states, making friends at each stop.
At Jan's request she will be cremated. Her family will receive visitors at Gaskins Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003. A memorial celebration of her life will be held when spring is in full bloom near her favorite meditation site at Glen O. Jones Lake. Friends and family will be notified of the exact date. For those wishing, memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Harrisburg, whose caring members furnished food and spiritual nourishment to Jan and Ryan during the months of her confinement to bed, or to Hospice of Southern Illinois, whose skillful and loving care allowed Jan peace and comfort during her life's end.
