Sam L. Stump, 80, of 109 W. Homer St., Harrisburg, died 1:53 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg with the Rev. Bernie Cowgill officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Garden cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Harrisburg to Cash and Ella M. (Bennett) Stump. On March 29, 1946, he married
the former Helen L. Aldridge, who survives.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He was an electrician and a 50-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Judy (Jim) Richardson of West Frankfort and Pam (Don) Moore of Whitewater, Mo., and a granddaughter, Hannah Moore.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William C. Stump; twin daughters in infancy, Mona Rae and Deborah Kay Stump and a sister, Doris Duffee.
Charles Prince Meade
Charles Prince Meade, 81, of Greenfield, Ind., formerly of McLeansboro, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in Greenfield, Ind.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at First General Baptist Church in McLeansboro with the Rev. Billy Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery in McLeansboro with military rites by American Legion Post No. 106 and VFW Post No. 1671. Visitation is 11 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church. Local arrangements are by Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
James Marion Hollon
James Marion Hollon, 66, of rural route 2, Elizabethtown, died 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Hardin County General Hospital in Rosiclare.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Hosick Funeral Home Chapel with Greg Love officiating. Burial will be in the Lavender cemetery in rural Herod. Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was the widower of Betty (Hubbard) Hollon. He is survived by a son, a daughter, two sisters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Ethel L. Denton
Ethel L. Denton, 92, of Shawneetown, died 12:02 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Fountain View Nursing Home in Eldorado.
Services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Shawneetown Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Wade Halva officiating. Burial will be in Westwood cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church. Vickery Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born Aug. 3, 1910 in Shawneetown to Charles and Melissa (Venerable) Martin. In December 1935, she married
Bert Pierson, who preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 1956. In December 1959, she married
Samuel Andrew Denton, who preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1970.
She was a member of Shawneetown Presbyterian Church and worked for Illinois Commercial Telephone Co. (now GTE) and for Shawneetown City Utilities. She is survived by a daughter, Nina Kay (Bob) Dallas of Harrisburg; a son, Don B. (Joy) Pierson of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a sister, Nina (Fred) Anderson of Indian Hills Park; a sister-in-law, Euvada Martin of Shawneetown; several caring nieces and nephews; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and both husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother, Woodrow Martin and four sisters, Helen Campbell, Geraldine Redick, Frances Anderson and Isabelle Hughes. Donations may be made to Shawneetown Presbyterian Church.
Gary L. Randolph
Gary L. Randolph, 59, of 625 N. Friend St., Carrier Mills, died 6:55 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg with the Rev. Harl Cockrum officiating. Burial will be in Salem cemetery in Carrier Mills with full military honors by members of the VFW and American Legion. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was born April 29, 1943 in Saline County to Peggy (Hill) and the late Glen Butler. On Dec. 7, 1968, he married
the former Sheryl Mayhew, who survives.
He was Baptist by faith. He retired from Peabody Coal Company after 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the UMWA.
In addition to his wife and mother, Peggy Murphy, he is survived by a son, Curtis (Brittany) Randolph of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Kera Randolph of Carrier Mills; a grandson, Seth Andrew Randolph of Louisville, Ky.; a mother-in-law, Vivian B. Mayhew of Carrier Mills and a brother, and a brother, William "Butch" (Shirley) Butler of Crab Orchard. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Kosair Children's Hospital Charity.
The Rev. Myrtle Irene Jackson
The Rev. Myrtle Irene Jackson, 95, of Springfield, died 6:57 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002. She was born March 20, 1907, the daughter of Robert F. and Mary Ayers Crevoisier. The Rev. Jackson started evangelizing at the age of 18. She married
Louie Jackson in 1941 while pastoring the First Apostolic Church in Harrisburg. She worked with Rev. A.E. VanHoos at radio station WEBQ in Harrisburg. In 1947, they relocated to Springfield, where they jointly pastored the First Apostolic Church at the corner of Rutledge and Reynolds. With the death of her husband in 1971, she retired as pastor but continued ministering and eventually became Pastor Emeritus of the First United Pentecostal Church at 600 West Monroe in Springfield.

Fannie Ruth Mings
Fannie Ruth Mings, nee Shreve, 97, of Harrisburg, born Aug. 13, 1905, in Marion, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Harrisburg Medical Center, Harrisburg.
Fannie was the owner/operator of Rich's Beauty Shop in Harrisburg from 1939 to 1985. She was a member of the Harrisburg First Baptist Church and Saline County Historical Society. Fannie was also active with the Martha Robinson Missionary Group.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Rich, whom she married
Jan. 5, 1924, and who died Nov. 17, 1956; her second husband, Roy E. Mings, whom she married
Sept. 27, 1963, and who died April 3, 1982; her parents, David Munro and Nora Francis, nee Parks, Shreve; her son, Donald Rich; grandsons, Kevin Mathews and Darrin Mathews; a brother, Fred Shreve; sisters, Muriel Corder, Gertrude Hall; and Bess Baker.
She is survived by her daughter, Doris (Tom) Mathews of Seattle, Wash.; two sons, Robert C. (Mae Kuykendal) Rich of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Jerry E. (Diana) Rich of Fairview Heights; a daughter-in-law, Nita Rich of Indianapolis, Ind.; three stepchildren, Emil Mings; Avrill McNally, and Frieda Biard; nine grandchildren, Cindy Robertson, Beckman Rich, Stuart Rich, Leah Hemmingway, Steve Rich, Susan Stahl, Brett Rich, Scott Rich, Julie Rich; and three great grandchildren.
Funeral: Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 2003, at Gaskins Funeral Home, Harrisburg with the Rev. Mike Davis officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn cemetery, Harrisburg. Visitation is 1 p.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made in memory of Fannie to the Harrisburg First Baptist Church Building Fund.

The Rev. George W. Smith
The Reverend George W. Smith, 89, departed this life 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003. He was born March 10, 1913 to Ben and Jemima Smith in Stonefort. He married
Addie Kennedy in Stonefort on March 24, 1932. Together they shared 50 wonderful years of marriage. She died July 16, 1982.
He was a graduate of Vienna High School and SIU-Carbondale and taught school for 28 years at Birdwell School, Stonefort Grade School, Raleigh and Galatia elementary schools. He answered God's call to the ministry in 1947 and served the Lord at several Southern Baptist churches during his lifetime, including pastorates at Newcastle, Stonefort, New Burnside, Long Branch, Springhill and Indian Camp. During his lifetime of service, he touched the lives of thousands of people in his classroom and from his pulpit. At a special service held at Springhill Baptist Church he said, "It is my prayer that my life has been a great blessing to them." Those of us who knew him surely know that his prayer was answered.
George is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Gordon and Sue Smith of Creal Springs; Charles and Mona Smith of the Lake of Egypt, Marion; and Leonard and Betty Smith of Harrisburg. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Stephen Smith and wife Elizabeth of Marion; Kristi Smith of Marion, Angela Powell and husband Lyman of Shirley, Amy Blaise and husband Dan of LaMars, Iowa; Matthew Smith of Dalton City; and Chad Smith of Harrisburg. He also leaves to mourn his passing eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Bob, and seven brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at the Stonefort Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. James Baldwin officiating, assisted by the Rev. Keith Bunfill. Burial will be in the Blackman cemetery. Visitation will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at the Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills and from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral at the church on Friday.
At the request of the family, the preferred choice of remembrance is memorials in his memory to the Blackman cemetery Fund in lieu of flowers. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Opal M. Murphy
Opal M. Murphy, 87, of 900 Veterans Drive, Eldorado, died 9:28 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at her residence.
Services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado with the Rev. Leo Hall officiating. Burial will be in Wolf Creek cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at the funeral home.
She was born Aug. 5, 1915 in Omaha to the late Marsh and Ora (Ramsey) Hall. On Dec. 2, 1931, she married
Dale Murphy, who preceded her in death on April 10, 1968.
She was a homemaker and a member of Crossroads Full Gospel Church.
She is survived by three sons, Carroll (Rosemary) Murphy and Denny (Barbara) Murphy, both of Florida and Mark (Lori) Murphy of Eldorado; two daughters, Joyce (Joseph) Bodi of Granite City and Kathy Barker of Harrisburg; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Leslie, Lee, Ray and Ralph Hall and a sister, Mae Holland.
Henry 'Hank' Frohock
Henry "Hank" Frohock, 69, of 175 Woodlake Lane, Eldorado, died 8:19 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Ferrell Hospital.
The body will be cremated. Services will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado with the Rev. Brian Morrow officiating. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at the funeral home.
He was born Sept. 12, 1933 in Eldorado to the late Bluford and Mary (Baker) Frohock. He married
the former Pat Moore.
He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was retired from electronics fabrication.
He is survived by two daughters, Janet Stimans of Eldorado and Cindy (Chris) Bogen of Campbell, Calif.; three brothers, J.B. Frohock of Washington, Bob (Bonnie) Frohock of Sunnyville, Calif. and Jim (Sandy) Frohock of Schererville, Ind. and a grandchild, Julie Scarola of Eldorado.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Frohock.
Randall Cushist Sr.
Randall Cushist Sr., 80, of 1230 Liberty Road, Harrisburg, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at his residence.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills with the Rev. Darrell Ford officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hill cemetery in Harrisburg. Visitation is 9 a.m. to service time Saturday.
He was born Sept. 20, 1922 in Ledford to the late Leo and Ida (Sweat) Cushist.
He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and a veteran of WWII. He worked for 43.5 years for Sahara Coal Company at Mine No. 5 and No. 21. He had been homebound for 14 years and critically ill since October. He was lovingly cared for by his wife of 46 years, Barbara (Langford) Cushist.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Randall "Randy" (Sandy) Cushist of Harrisburg; two daughters, Mrs. Denise (Jerry) Raymer of Normal and Pauletta Baldwin of Harrisburg; a brother, Norman "Jerry" Cushist of Waterford, Mich.; a sister, Donna Cushist of Harrisburg; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a third expected in March.
