Charles Harvey 'Charlie' Griffith
Memorial service for Charles Harvey "Charlie" Griffith was Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at First Baptist Church in Farmington with the Rev. Rocky Good and Dr. Bill Miller officiating.
Graveside service was at Cedar Grove cemetery in Salem with Charles Jensen officiating.
Mr. Griffith was born July 24, 1923, at Harrisburg to Ira Otto and Ollie Mae (Sumerdick) Griffith. He married
Marie (Ellis) Weaver on Jan. 4, 1963. Mr. Griffith died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Farmington at the age of 79.
Survivors include his wife, Marie of Farmington; two children, Sandra Rowell and husband Cliff of Hay Market, Va., and Michael Weaver of Farmington; two sisters, Betty Lindley of Edwardsville and Mary Stephenson of Stonefort; four grandchildren, Melissa Tardiff and husband Bryan of Warrenton, Va., Jeffrey Stevenson of Voorheeis, N.J. and Rebecca and Charlie Weaver of Farmington; two great-grandchildren, Justin and Bradley Tardiff of Warrenton, Va., and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Elizabeth.
Mr. Griffith served in the United States Army during World War II. He played ball for the Milwaukee Braves for several years and retired from Mobile Oil Company. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Farmington and the Masonic Lodge.
Alvin Drue
Alvin Drue, 88, of 324 E. Walnut St., Harrisburg, died 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in the Carrier Mills Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills with the Rev. Ownly Williams and the Rev. Donnie Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was born Jan. 23, 1914, in Harrisburg to the late Samuel and Gertrude (Buckner) Drue. On March 24, 1936, he married
Mary Helen Claybrook, who preceded him in death on March 20, 1995.
He was a retired maintenance worker from the Harrisburg National Bank. He was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Harrisburg.
He is survived by a son, Charles (Aundreya) Drue Sr. of Carrier Mills; two brothers, Kyle Drew of Pittsburg, Pa., and Samuel Drue of Chicago; a niece, Betty Lou Wheeler of Maywood; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Drue of Carrier Mills; two close friends, Charlotte Taborn and James Coleman of Harrisburg; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Richard Drue Sr. and William Drue and two sisters, Mary Dewitt and Juanita Woodard.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Donna Rose Miller
Donna Rose Miller, 53, of Eldorado, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville, Ind.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg with the Rev. Bob Murry officiating. Burial will be in Rhine cemetery in Raleigh. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at the funeral home.
She was born July 31, 1949 in Harrisburg to William "Bill" and Norma (Ewell) Headrick. On Aug. 12, 1967, she married
Glen Earl Miller, who survives.
She was a home maker, a member of Raleigh First Baptist Church, the WMU and the Order of the Eastern Star.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Glen E. (Tabitha) Miller and Jamie (Helen Elam) Miller, both of Raleigh; two daughters, Christy (Jason) Griffith of Eldorado and Misty Miller of Harrisburg; a son, Frankie Miller of Harrisburg; seven sisters, Jeanie Vickers of Stonefort, Della (Cletus) Horton of Harrisburg, Carolyn (Ron) Dunning of Carrier Mills, Elain (Ron) Horton of Harrisburg, Dee Dee (Charles) Droit of Galatia, Sharon Goodman of Harrisburg and Linda (Bob) Smith of Carrier Mills; four brothers, Billy (Carrie) Headrick of Harrisburg, David (Kathy) Headrick of Carrier Mills, Rick (Bonnie) Headrick and Kevin (Loretta) Headrick, both of Harrisburg; and three grandchildren, Derrick and Madison Miller of Raleigh and Mia Griffith of Eldorado.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Christian Miller.
Nora Christine Caldwell Thompson
Nora Christine Caldwell Thompson, 94, of 209 West Eight Street, Lumberton, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Biggs Funeral Home Chapel in Lumberton with Dr. Russell T. Cherry Jr. officiating. Services in Eldorado will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Watson Funeral Home where friends may call after 10 a.m. to the service time. Burial is in Sunset Lawn cemetery in Harrisburg. The Rev. Russell Helton will officiate.
Mrs. Thompson, the youngest daughter of the late Luther Henry and Nora Dean Godwin Caldwell, was born on April 25, 1908, in her home at Lumberton, N.C. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Neill Archie Thompson Jr., M.D.; her son, Alexander Benjamin "Sandy" Thompson; and three sisters, Mary Lee Caldwell Parker, Rosa Caldwell Woodall and Lois Caldwell Carlyle.
She attended Lumberton public schools, graduating valedictorian of her high school class. She then attended Martha Washington Seminary in Washington, D.C., the Ward Belmont School in Nashville, Tenn., and graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., with a BA degree of double majors in English and Latin. Following graduation she returned to Lumberton to teach these subjects in high school until marrying Neill Archie Thompson Jr., M.D. in a wedding ceremony on Nov. 12, 1936, at her home in Lumberton, N.C.
Upon Dr. Thompson's discharge from service after World War II, he relocated his family to Eldorado and began a medical/surgical practice as co-owner of Ferrell Hospital.
Mrs. Thompson remained an Illinois resident for a number of years after her husband's death in 1966, but returned to Lumberton often each year, staying in her old home place after purchasing it from her mother's estate. She undertook to preserve what remained and enjoyed seeing her efforts to have her home placed on the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 18, 1978, the first and only such designated residence in Lumberton. She returned permanently to Lumberton about 10 years ago.
Surviving are three children, two sons, Neill Archie Thompson III of Lumberton, N.C., Luther Caldwell Thompson of Fayetteville, N.C., and daughter, Catherine Thompson Brents of Lenexa, Kan.; eight grandchildren, Catherine Thompson Heavern, Sara Thompson Logan, Neill Archie Thompson IV, Robert David Thompson, Luther Caldwell Thompson Jr., Todd Alexander Thompson, Lawson Baldwin Thompson, Jason Frazer Brozen; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Thompson, until the last few years of her life, was active in the First Baptist Church of Lumberton, N.C., Calvary Baptist Church of Eldorado, DAR, UDC, Friends of the Library, Historic Robeson, Saline County Historical Society, Illinois American Medical and International College of Surgeons Auxiliaries and Inquirers Club.
Contributions can be made to the Eldorado Calvary Baptist Church Missions Fund and to the Southeastern Illinois College Tuition Fund.
Reva Josephine Whitehead
Reva Josephine Whitehead, 90, of Elizabethtown, died 4 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Elizabethtown with Ed Lafferty and the Rev. Paul Wilkerson officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Empire in Elizabethtown. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Hosick Funeral Home Chapel in Rosiclare and 10 a.m. to service time Friday at the church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, three granddaughters, a sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, a cousin and a host of extended family and friends.
Thomas Allen Patton
Thomas Allen Patton, 85, of Elizabethtown, died 5:09 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Hardin County General Hospital.
Services were held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Hosick Funeral Home Chapel in Rosiclare with Arthur Austin Jr. officiating. Burial was in I.O.O.F. Empire in Elizabethtown. Visitation was 9:30 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
He is survived by a daughter, a daughter-in-law, two brothers, a sister, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Martha M. Blackledge
Martha M. Blackledge, 70, of McLeansboro, died 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at McLeansboro Healthcare.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Piopolis with Monsignor Joseph Lawler officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church cemetery in Piopolis. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Luther Lee Price
Luther Lee Price, 87, a resident of Fountain View Nursing Home, formerly of 30 N. Michigan St. in Harrisburg, died 2:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at his residence.
Graveside services were held 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Sunset Hill cemetery in Harrisburg with the Rev. Jimmy Dale Lambert officiating. There was no visitation or funeral service. Reed Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
He was born Sept. 9, 1915 in Harrisburg to the late Zachary and Mary (Austin) Price. On Dec. 2, 1934, he married
Gertrude Gaynelle Edwards, who preceded him in death on March 28, 1999.
He was a coal miner who retired from Sahara Coal Company. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of WWII.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Lou (T.J.) McVay of Raleigh and Carolyn Harner of Chattanooga, Tenn.; four sons, Gary (Sandy) Price and Jack (Doris) Price, both of Carrier Mills; Ron Price of Galatia and Gordon Price of Harrisburg; a brother, Don Price; a sister, Mary Jane Tucker of Shawneetown; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Leotta G. Morse
Leotta G. Morse, 88, of 205 Pankey Road, Carrier Mills, died 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at her residence.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills with the Rev. Larry Morse officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery in Delwood. Visitation is 10 a.m. to service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born Feb. 25, 1914 in Saline County to the late Arthur and Trannie (Hancock) Hill. She married
Leslie Morse on Jan. 20, 1942 in Crown Point, Ind. and he survives.
She was a retired cook from Carrier Mills Nursing Home.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Billy Joe and Joann Morse of Nokomis, Fla.; a sister, Betty (Joe) Yarber of Stonefort; a brother, G.B. (Mabel) Hill of Ozark; two grandsons, Billy and Brad Morse; two granddaughters, Starla Jones and Angel Dockery; and five great-grandchildren, B.J. Morse, Bria Morse, Lance Smith, Cody Smith and Michelle Dockery.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Michael Dockery; four brothers, Guy, Bob, David and John Hill; and two sisters, Ada Morse and Martha Hill.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Ridge cemetery in her memory.
Dora Lorene Neal
Dora Lorene Neal, 82, a resident of Harrisburg Care Center, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Carbondale Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado. Burial will be in Wolf Creek cemetery. Visitation is noon to service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born March 7, 1920 in Eldorado to William Evert and Margaret E. (Dodd) Neal.
She is survived by two brothers, George Neal of Eldorado and Lawrence Neal of California.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
