Lenora Lynn Veach
Lenora Lynn Veach, 46, of Raleigh, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at her residence.
Services will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg with the Rev. J.P. Vilaire officiating. Lenora will be cremated as to her wishes following the service. Visitation is 5 p.m. to service time Tuesday.
She was born Sept. 5, 1946 in Charleston to Leonard Jesse and Dorothy (Whitaker) Veach.
She was a licensed practical nurse and a member of the Harrisburg Church of Nazarene.
She is survived by her mother, Dorothy Whitaker; two sons, James Nesler of West Frankfort and George William Jameson of Johnston City; a daughter, Betty June Jameson of Raleigh; six grandchildren; two brothers, Mike Veach of Johnston City and John Veach of Greenup; an aunt, Doris Whitaker of Galatia; a stepmother, Peggy Veach of Marion; and her grandfather, A.T. "Tom" Whitaker of Mattoon.
E. Ronald 'Ronnie' Coon
E. Ronald "Ronnie" Coon, 83, of Harrisburg, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Ft. Myers, Fla.
The body has been cremated as per Ronnie's wishes with a memorial service to be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the charge of Gaskins Funeral Home.
He was born April 18, 1919 in Harrisburg to Everett Isaac and Reva (Groves) Coon. He married
Alice Caldwell, who preceded him in death in 1990. He then married
Corinne "Connie" Wiseheart, who survives.
He was retired from Farmers Home Administration. Mr. Coon was an Air Force veteran, having served during WWII. He was also a graduate of University of Illinois with a master's degree in agriculture.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Joe (Susie) Rodocker of Carrier Mills; a brother, Willard Coon of Rossville and three grandchildren, Caldwell Hauptmann, Ronnie Hauptmann and Maggie Rodocker.
Varnice Haught
Varnice Haught, 86, of Ft. Worth, Texas, formerly of Golconda, died 10:58 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Harris Methodist Hospital in Ft. Worth.
Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Mt. Zion cemetery in the Rock community of Pope County. Visitation is 9 a.m. until service time at Aly Funeral Home in Golconda.
She was the widow of Frank Haught. She is survived by a daughter, two sisters-in-law, one granddaughter and two grandsons.
Gladys Louise Banks
Gladys Louise Banks, 70, of Pontiac, Mich., died 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003.
Services were held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Cox Funeral Home in Rosiclare with the Rev. Roy Baker officiating. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Elizabethtown. Visitation was 9 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home.
She is survived by a brother and a sister.
Mary Francis Leavell
Mary Francis Leavell, 68, of Rosiclare, died 11:42 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Hardin County General Hospital.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Hosick Funeral Home in Rosiclare with the Rev. Steve Shea, the Rev. Lloyd Harris and the Rev. Deon Dutton officiating. Burial will be in Cave Hill cemetery in Cave-in-Rock. Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Leavell of Rosiclare; three daughters; two stepsons; a stepdaughter; two brothers; two sisters; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Christine Thompson
Christine Thompson, 94, of Lumberton, N.C., formerly a resident of Eldorado, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Southeast Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Thompson's remains will be returned to Eldorado and service details and family members will be announced later from Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado.
She was the widow of Dr. N.A. Thompson.
Harry J. Neighbors
No services are planned for Harry J. Neighbors, 77, of Forsyth, Mo. formerly of Rockford.
Mr. Neighbors passed away Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at Dade County Nursing Home in Greenfield. Harry was born April 1, 1925, in Golconda, the son of Delmon D. and Charity J. (Anderson) Neighbors. He was married
to Alice A.J. Sink on Dec. 7, 1968, in Clinton, Iowa. He was employed 30 years by F.W. Means/Aretex.
Survivors include his wife, Alice, of the home; two daughters, Carla (Carlos) Burton of Herod and Phyllis Gholson of Herod; two sisters, Bessie Lovelace of Portland, Ore., and Velma Turner of Marion; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Harry in death were his parents; two brothers, Louis and Raymond; a sister, Helen and a granddaughter. Also his beloved mother-in-law, Ruth M. Johnson.
Cremation and arrangements were under the direction of Forsyth Whelchel Chapel in Forsyth, Mo.
Dora Parish
Dora Parish, 72, of 701 S. Land St., Harrisburg, died 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at J.M. Weirauch Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisburg with the Rev. Steve Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at the funeral home.
She was born Feb. 9, 1930, in Harrisburg to the late James and Nora (Black) Patton. On Jan. 16, 1948, she married
the Rev. W.T. Parish in Morganfield, Ky., who preceded her in death on April 30, 1997.
She was a homemaker and a member of First General Baptist Church on Sloan Street, Harrisburg.
She is survived by a son, Todd Parish of Harrisburg; two sisters, Eunice Bundren and Anita Carnett, both of Harrisburg and five grandchildren, Jaci and Sheldon Dale, Jenna Humphrey, Rachel Parish and Zachary Parish, all of Harrisburg.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelly Humphrey; two sisters, Lil Firman and Ruth Goins; and four brothers, Ellis, Howard, John Robert and Sam Patton.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Camp Oxford in her memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
John C. Groves Sr.
John C. Groves Sr., 90, of 4550 Parker City Road, Creal Springs, died 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills with Keith Groves and the Rev. Raymond Conley officiating. Burial will be in New Burnside cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at the funeral home.
He was born Sept. 7, 1912, in Evansville, Ind., to the late Henry and John Frances (Blunk) Groves. On May 23, 1931, he married
the former Callie Williams, who preceded him in death on Sept. 28, 1993.
He was a retired custodian from Vanderburg County School District and a retired pastor. He was also an Army veteran of WWII.
He is survived by three sons, John Groves Jr. of Creal Springs, Leon Groves of Carmi and Keith Groves of Blue Springs, Mo.; a daughter, Ann Horn of Creal Springs; a sister, Glaydis Green of Creal Springs; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Opal Dearing
Opal Dearing, 91, of Harrisburg, died 3:39 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia with the Rev. Dean Gay officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at the funeral home.
She was born Feb. 4, 1911, in Williamson County to the late Grover C. and Daisy (Strike) Smith. On Jan. 23, 1932, she married
Ewell Dearing in Franklin County, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1961.
She was a 71-year member of the Ebenezer Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was ordained a ruling elder in August 1985, was a Sunday school teacher for several years and superintendent for several years. She was a retired LPN. She had worked for Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Union Hospital in West Frankfort and the west side of American Beauty Nursing Home in West Frankfort.
She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (Jim) Dunn of Harrisburg; two grandchildren, Danny (Emily) Dunn and Steve (Julie) Dunn, both of Harrisburg; and six great-grandchildren, Jessica, Sarah, Jessica, Audrey, Cody and Hillary, all of Harrisburg.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Gerald David Dearing; a brother, Everett Smith; and a sister, Ruby Murrday.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Doramae Sweet
Doramae Sweet, 70, of 1306 S. Holland St., Harrisburg, formerly of Eddyville, died 12:33 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Aly Funeral Home in Eddyville with Bernie Cowgill officiating. Burial will be in Eddyville cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
She was born Feb. 28, 1932, in Pope County to the late Reuben and Ruth Rose Dale. She married
Oliver "Doc" Sweet, who preceded her in death in 1991.
She graduated Pope County High School in 1950.
She is survived by a son, Harold Sweet of Carrier Mills; a brother-in-law, Leroy Bates of Grantsburg and a grandson, Christopher Sweet of Carrier Mills.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Carlene Bates and a daughter, Ruth Potter.
