Nell Hays Collins
Nell Hays Collins, 89, formerly a resident of Harrisburg, passed away Dec. 24, 2001, at the Terrace Nursing Home in Waukegan. She was born July 11, 1912, in Cleaton, Ky., the daughter of Elman S. and Ona Mae Hays. Nell grew up in Harrisburg and was a 1932 graduate of Harrisburg Township High School. Nell and her husband, Peyton M. Collins, owned and operated Collins Shoe Store in Waukegan for almost 30 years before retiring to Harrisburg in 1972. Nell moved to Gurnee in 1986 and was a member of the First Christian Church of Gurnee.
She is survived by two daughters, Bette (Richard) Aho of Gurnee and Patricia (Frank) Krajacic of Kenosha, Wis.; four grandsons; one granddaughter; seven great-grandchildren; one nephew, Donald (Masuko) Duncan of Harrisburg; one niece, Barbara (James) Coker of Arlington, Texas; and many great-nephews and great-nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peyton, in 1978 and three sisters, Geneva Duncan, Pearl Adams, and Mildred Hays.
A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Sunset Hill cemetery in Harrisburg with the Rev. Howard Scott of the Harrisburg First Christian Church officiating. Arrangements are being made by Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg.
Esther Mae Smith
Esther Mae Smith, 86, of Harrisburg, formerly of Galatia, died 10:10 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia with Dr. James Baldwin officiating.
Burial will be in Lebanon cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to service time Thursday at the funeral home.
She was born Jan. 1, 1916, in Saline County to the late Randle and Recie (Karnes) Tate. On Sept. 2, 1950, she married
Raymond "Chigger" Smith, who preceded her in death.
She was a housekeeper and a needle craftsman.
She is survived by a daughter, Weida (Smith) Aud of Harrisburg; two brothers, Charles Bryce Tate of Washington and Norman Otto Tate of Galatia; a sister, Lorene Tate of Galatia; and nieces and great-nieces.
Doris Nell Dardeen
Doris Nell Dardeen, 78, of Muddy, died 11:12 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Lindale cemetery. Those attending should go directly to the cemetery. There will be no visitation. Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg is in charge of the arrangements. She was born August 29, 1923, in Carrier Mills to Cecil E. and Muriel (Reeder) Rice. On Nov. 16, 1940, she married
George R. Dardeen, who survives.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, James Dardeen of Benton; a daughter, Becky (Jim) Schmook of Harrisburg; three grandchildren, Mike Schmook, Kelly Dardeen, and Karen Ninis; four great-grandchildren, Cody and Jarod Schmook and Jacob and Adam Ninis; a brother, Joe Rice of Carrier Mills; and a sister, Donna O'Neal of Harrisburg.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Dale Rice; and two brothers and one sister in infancy.
Ralph C. Evetts
Ralph C. Evetts, 70, of Carrier Mills, died 1:05 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, at his residence.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills with the Rev. John Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Henshaw cemetery near Stonefort. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the Carrier Mills and Harrisburg American Legion Posts. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was born Jan. 18, 1932, in the Stonefort community in Williamson County, the son of John B. "Brack" and Katie (Cowsert) Evetts. He was united in marriage to Millie Farris, who preceded him in death. He was later united in marriage to Willadean (Roark) on Oct. 6, 1989, in Morganfield, Ky., and she survives.
Ralph was a retired asphalt truck driver. He was a member of the Teamsters Union in Gary, Ind. He was a graduate of the Henshaw Public School. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. He was a 34-year member of the Carrier Mills American Legion Post and a life member of the Creal Springs VFW Post. Ralph enjoyed auto mechanic work and reading Western novels. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife and children.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, John Evetts of Gary, Ind.; a daughter, Deborah Kidd of Carrier Mills; seven stepchildren; nine grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 24 stepgrandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Irene King of Carrier Mills and Dorothy (Walter) Chaffin of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by a son, Charles Evetts; four stepgrandchildren; and two brothers, Charles and Robert Evetts.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Henshaw cemetery. Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Zelma Louise Owens
Zelma Louise Owens, 84, of rural Route 1, Golconda, died 3:20 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, at her residence.
Services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Aly Funeral Home in Golconda with the Rev. Allen Speer and the Rev. Billy Green officiating. Burial was in Prospect cemetery west of Golconda. Visitation was after 6 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, at the funeral home.
She was born August 17, 1917, in Pope County to George and Ivy (Davis) Dunning. She was the widow of Alfred Owens, who preceded her in death on August 2, 1997.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Golconda.
She is survived by a son, Bill (Donna) Owens of Golconda; two grandchildren, Joe (Renee) Owens and Kathy (Tim) Simmons, both of Golconda; a brother, James Dunning of Golconda; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by seven sisters and one brother.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Lourdes Hospice or Golconda First Baptist Church.
William Keating
William Keating, 72, of Jonesboro, Ark., died 12:10 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in East Memphis, Tenn.
Services were held 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado with the Rev. Dewayne Taylor officiating. Burial was in the Raleigh Masonic cemetery in Raleigh. Visitation was 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was born Oct. 24, 1929, in Eldorado to M.J. and Mary (Milligan) Keating. He was married
to Betty Jean Oglesby Keating, who survives. He was a retired field supervisor at Halliburton Oil Well Services and a member of Magnolia Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Ark.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William Michael Keating of Harrisburg; a daughter, Deborah Jean Rennels of Jonesboro, Ark.; a brother, Michael Keating of New Johnsonville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Holly Rennels Cockrell of Jonesboro, Scott Anthony Rennels of Jonesboro, Tyler Shea Rennels of Jonesboro, Kristopher Michael Keating of Harrisburg, Patrick William Keating of Harrisburg; and a great-grandchild, Christopher Cade Cockrell of Jonesboro.

Frieda I. Monroe
Frieda I. Monroe, 96, of Route 1, Wayne City, died 3:35 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.
Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Richard McCormick and the Rev. Robert Sefried officiating. Burial was in Garrison cemetery near Adem. Visitation was 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, at the funeral home.
She was survived by a son, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ester Smith, 86, of Harrisburg, died 10:10 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, at her residence.

Lotella L. Gidcumb
Lotella L. Gidcumb, 82, of Holly, Mich., died Thursday, May 23, 2002, in Harrisburg.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Dryer Funeral Home in Holly with Pastor Bob Galey officiating.
Burial will be in Ottawa Park cemetery. Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Gidcumb was born in Harrisburg on Nov. 20, 1919, the daughter of Jerry and Addie (Wilson) Pittman.
She is survived by her husband, Chalmer Gidcumb; four children, Carolyn (John) Sherrod of Harrisburg, Pat (Junior) Drake of Fenton, Jackie (Dennis) Davis of Dryden, and Cindy (Don) O'Connor of Oxford; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Monsignor John E. "Jack" Stallings
Monsignor John E. "Jack" Stallings, 77, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002.
He was born in East St. Louis on Sept. 15, 1924, to the late John Stallings Sr. and Rose A. (Creane) Stallings.
Monsignor Stallings was a well-known Catholic priest in the Shawneetown area for many years.
His education into the priesthood began with six years at the St. Henry's Prep School, two years at the Cardinal Glennon Prep Seminary and four years at Kennrick Seminary.
On May 28, 1950 in Belleville, he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest.
His first assignment was from 1950 to 1956 being an assistant at Sacred Heart Parish in East St. Louis. He was then transferred to Shawneetown where he was the priest for St. Mary's in Shawneetown and St. Patrick in Pond Settlement from 1956 to 1982. From 1982 to 1984 he pastored at St. Joseph in Elizabethtown and from 1984 to 1999 he pastored at St. Mary's in Harrisburg. He also was administrator at St. Joseph in Ridgway and Equality for a short time. He retired on July 18, 1999.
Monsignor Stallings was very active in the priesthood, he was a member of the Priests Senate, Dean of the East Deanery for eight years, Member of the Priest Personnel Committee, Chairman of the Priest Continuing Education Committee, Co-Director of Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Teacher at Old Central and New Assumption High School and Chairman of Community Affairs Dept. of Illinois Catholic Conference.
Monsignor Stallings was also very active in his civil life. He was executive director of the East St. Louis Development Corp., president of Galmon Corp., president of East Side Development Corp., secretary of Okaw Valley Corp., director of Target 2000 East St. Louis, president of Chamber of Commerce in Shawneetown, chairman of the Shawneetown Regional Port Authority and chairman of Shawneetown Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1960.
His surviving family is four sisters, Mary Ann and Martin Hazelhorst of Trenton, Josephine and Al Heger of Pinehurst, N.C., Therese Schmalz of Sterling, Ursula and Jerry Tabaska of Craig, Colo.; one brother, Paul J. Stallings of Tenn.; 18 nieces and nephews; and many grand-nieces and -nephews.
At Monsignor Stallings request, his body was donated to science at St. Louis University. There will be a memorial mass 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Shawneetown with the Most Reverence Bishop Wilton Gregory officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Monsignor asks that donations be made to the East St. Louis Development Corporation. Envelopes will be available at the church.
