Rose Marie Riegel
Rose Marie Riegel died Wednesday, May 22, 2002 in her home.
Funeral Services will be held at the Sloan Funeral Home, Galatia, 11 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, with Rev. Jon Cockrel and Rev. Vola Sittig, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn cemetery, Harrisburg. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002 at the funeral home.
Rose was born January 27, 1949, to Josephine Wilkins. She was reared in the home of Wayne & Mary Ethel Cockrel of the rural Metropolis area.
She was united in marriage to William Lowell Riegel, June 4, 1971 at the Methodist Church in Joppa. To this union was born William David Riegel of Manhattan, New York and Daniel Scott Riegel who resided at home.
Rose was employed by the Wabash County Nursing Home, Carmi, where she enjoyed her work as a nurse in the care of the elderly. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, her sons, and foster mother, Mary E. Cockrel, Warrensburg. Her in-law parents, Grant & Jo-ann Riegel, Harrisburg, and Alan & Alice Weed, Benton, sisters Margie (William) Groskopf, Elkville, Velma Morgan, Hawaii, brother Ricky McGill and foster brother, Jon (Betty) Cockrel of Warrensburg, and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Josephine Wilkins, and foster dad, Wayne Cockrel.
Memorial donations may be made to a trust fund that will be established for Daniel who is a patient in ICU at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, his condition is presently stable but he is paralyzed from his waist down.
As is many things of life that are so difficult to understand as is this senseless and tragic loss of life, of one who gave so much.
Judith Ann Amberger
Judith Ann Amberger, 60, of 625 Lone Oak Road, Harrisburg, died 11:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be held 6 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg with the Rev. Jimmy Hamilton officiating. Cremation will follow the funeral service. A private burial will take place at Sunset Lawn cemetery at a later date. Visitation is 5 p.m. to service time Sunday at the funeral home.
She was born June 2, 1941, in Harrisburg to the late William and Imogene (Oldham) Coltrin.
She was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church and worked as a registered nurse at Harrisburg Medical Center for 12 years.
She is survived by a son, David Amberger of Murphysboro; a daughter, Cynthia (Michael) Knott of Terre Haute, Ind.; three sons, Robert Dale (Sandra) Amberger of Largo, Fla., Richard (Virginia) Amberger of Nashville, and Scott (Sheila) Amberger of Galatia; four brothers, Edwin Cobb of Sevierville, Tenn., William Coltrin of Columbus, Ohio, Curt Reed of Pontiac, Mich., and Jerry Reed of Harrisburg; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and much-loved sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
William A. 'Bill' Summers
William A. "Bill" Summers, 88, of Overland Park, Kansas, formerly from Eldorado, died 10 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2002, at his residence.
Born September 17, 1913, William A. Summers was the son of Judge Arthur W. Summers and Georgia Horn Summers. He lived as a child in Eldorado and graduated from high school there in 1932. As a young man he worked for a period as a typesetter for the Eldorado Daily Journal. He attended Southern Illinois University. Then he entered the Army where he had his life's career, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
In the Army, he operated Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps in Wisconsin, Illinois, Nevada and Utah. In World War II, he trained infantrymen and served in the occupation of Germany.
He served in both Japan and Korea during the Korean War. He was a lifelong member of American Legion Post 169.
Following his active service he lived for many years in Chicago where he worked in the automobile business.
He was preceded in death by two other siblings, Norman Dale Summers and Mary Austin Summers. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Summers Morse of Prairie Village, Kan.; grandsons Michael and Mitchell Morse of Leawood, Kan.; great-grandsons Mason and Jackson Morse of Leawood, Kan.; sister, Martha Louise Summers Wiley, formerly of Eldorado and Harrisburg and now in East Lansing, Mich.; and brother, George Donald Summers of Reston, Va.
John Bennett Dotson
John Bennett Dotson, 83, of Harrisburg, died 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at his residence.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg with the Rev. Mike Davis officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was born Oct. 16, 1918, in Leavenworth, Ind., to Joe Christofferson and Oneida Dotson. On June 5, 1958, he married
the former Marjorie Mugge, who survives.
He attended the Harrisburg First Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II with the 1st Armored Division in Africa, Sicily, and Italy and was a Tech Sgt. in 47th Medics. He was a schoolteacher and coach. He was past president of 1st Armored Division Assoc. in 1988 and 1989, 5-year member of Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star in Crawford County, Ind., and member of the Egyptian Shrine Club.
Mr. Dotson first taught school in English, Ind., and later at Paducah Junior College, he coached basketball and baseball in Harrisburg in 1956 to 1961 and in Vincennes, Ind., 1961 to 1964. Mr. Dotson was a teacher who cared about his kids getting an education with 131 boys getting in college with full scholarships.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Sonny (Sherry) Dotson of Harrisburg; a daughter, Patricia (Everett) Zarse of Greenwood, Ind.; four grandchildren, Josh, Thad and Nathan Zarse and Emily Dotson; two brothers-in-law, Bob and Mac Mugge of Harrisburg; and several nieces and nephews.
The family requests donations to the John Dotson Scholarship Fund at Southeastern Illinois College in lieu of flowers.
Mabel Sanders
Mabel Sanders, 99, of McLeansboro, died 10:10 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2002, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Ron Lamp officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery in McLeansboro. Visitation is noon to service time Thursday at the funeral home.
She is survived by a son, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Monsignor John E. "Jack" Stallings
Monsignor John E. "Jack" Stallings, 77, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., formerly of Shawneetown, died May 22, 2002.
A memorial mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shawneetown and further family information will be announced later.
Cox & Son Funeral Home in Shawneetown is in charge of the arrangements.

Kenneth D. Smithpeters, 57, of Belle Chasse, La., formerly of McLeansboro, died 2:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero, La.
Graveside military services only provided by VFW Post No. 3851 at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, at I.O.O.F. cemetery in McLeansboro under the direction of Harre Funeral Home of McLeansboro.
Phillip Suttner
Phillip Suttner, 87, of 17101 Hwy. 1, Ridgway, died 1:55 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2002, at his residence.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ridgway with Father Mark Stec officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery in Ridgway. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Vickery Funeral Chapel in Ridgway with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
He was born Nov. 24, 1914, in Ridgway to Frank J. and Theresa (Fromm) Suttner. On Nov. 26, 1940, he married
the former Lillian Luckett in St. Louis, Mo., and she survives.
He was a farmer and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ridgway.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Roger Suttner of Ridgway, Jim (Helen) Suttner of Ridgway, Tom (Mary Linda) Suttner of Norris City, and Don (Shanna) Suttner of Chesterfield, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Angie Raymer, Matt Suttner, Cyndi Punke, Bob Suttner, Andrea Martin, Angela Shain and Randy Shaw; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lorene Harris; and three brothers, Joseph C., Frank Edward and Alphonse E. Suttner.

Wanda Lee Essary
Wanda Lee Essary, 64, of Thompsonville (Corinth area) died 3:20 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2002, at his residence.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia with the Rev. Ken Petty officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Hill cemetery in Broughton. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the funeral home.
She was born June 26, 1937, in Galatia to the late Auda and Edith (Maynard) Howe. On July 24, 1953, she married
Ernie Essary in Saline County, and he survives.
She attended Grace Awakening Church in Benton.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Steven Ray Essary of West Frankfort and Denny Lee Essary of Thompsonville; a daughter, Brenda Joyce Bolte of San Antonio, Texas; four brothers, Charles Walker of Lampe, Mo., Dale Walker of Clarmore, Okla., Loren Williams of Santa Fe, Texas, and Leland Williams of Hull; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Clerence Williams.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
