Robert C. 'Chris' Downen
Robert C. "Chris" Downen, 26, of 220 W. Townsend, Shawneetown, died 6:15 a.m. Sunday Dec. 27, 1998 as a result of an automobile accident on the Shawneetown-New Haven Road.
He was born on July 7, 1972, to Bobby and Katie (Mosby) Downen of Shawneetown.
He was an employee of the Black Beauty Coal Co.
Mr. Downen was a University of Southern Indiana graduate with a degree in agriculture. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited.
Surviving are his parents, two sisters, Courtney Downen and Jordan Downen, both of Shawneetown; his grandparents, Bob and Betty Downen of Shawneetown and Joe and Willabea Mosby of Equality; and a nephew; and many uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shawneetown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shawneetown, where friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time. Fr. Ray Engelhart will officiate and burial will be in Westwood cemetery near Shawneetown.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shawneetown in Chris' memory.
Mabel (Karnes) Hayes
Mrs. Mabel (Karnes) Hayes, 86, of Lake Village, Ind., formerly of Bradley and Galatia, died at 3:43 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee.
She was married
to Alwin "Red" Karnes. He preceded her in death in June 1947. She later married
Leland Hayes and he died in January 1979.
She was born on May 10, 1912, in Brushy Township to the late James "Tip" and Anna (Baker) Golliher.
Mrs. Hayes retired from Manteno Mental Health Center in 1986. She was a member of the Galatia Order of Eastern Star and Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Galatia.
Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Gratton and Frankie Karnes of Galatia, David and Annette Karnes of Bradley, Richard and Nancy Hayes of Lake Village, and Marvin and Sandy Hayes of Bradley; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith and her husband "Zip" Dietz; and a nephew, James Golliher.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Ann Brown, three brothers, Pete, M.D. and Otto Golliher, and a grandson.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Union Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Vola Sittig and the Rev. Ernie Donoho will officiate. Burial will be in Rhine cemetery near Raleigh.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia.
Clara Ellen Barker
Mrs. Clara Ellen Barker, 63, a resident of Harrisburg Care Center, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998 at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Mrs. Barker was born on May 9, 1935, in Wasson to the late William and Arvey (Conkel) Joyner.
She was a Baptist by faith.
In June of 1959, she married
Isaac "Junior" Barker. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Cindy and Bill Seets of Harrisburg, and Sandy Gibbs of Thompsonville; a son, William "Billy" Barker of Harrisburg; a brother, Gilbert Joyner of Enfield; a sister, Helen Newcomb of Harrisburg; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Bill "Shotgun" Joyner, and a sister, Gertrude Rose.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg, where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Concord cemetery near Herod.
Letha M. Waltz
Mrs. Letha M. Waltz, 75, of 2300 Chickasha St., in Eldorado, died at 4:10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
She married
Eugene Waltz Jan. 1, 1946, in Eldorado. He survives. Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Wendy Herbert of LaPiere, Mich.; a brother and sister-in-law, Wendell and Lucille Wright of Flint, Mich.; four grandchildren, Don, Danny, Daniel, and Charlie, all of Flint; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel; two brothers, and five sisters.
She was born on Aug. 11, 1923, in Raleigh, to the late Willis and Birdie (Pritchett) Wright.
She was a past member of Flinton Lawn Baptist Church of Flint.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado, where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Bill Jones will officiate and burial will be in Wolf Creek cemetery in Eldorado.
Florence Gowen
Florence Gowen, 78, of 1700 Jasper St., Eldorado, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
She was born on March 28, 1920, in Jersey County, to the late Elmer and Lucille (Corzine) Gowen.
Miss Gowen was a member of the Eldorado Assembly of God Church.
Surviving are a brother, Eugene Gowen of Jerseyville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Preston Gowen.
Services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado, where visitation was held from 10 a.m. to service time. The Rev. Dwayne Jolly officiated and burial was in Wolf Creek cemetery at Eldorado.
Nova S. Bovinet
Mrs. Nova S. Bovinet, 92, of McLeansboro, formerly of Harrisburg, died at 8:05 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.
She was the daughter of the late Cam and Gertia (Tate) Davis and was born on July 24, 1906, in Hamilton County.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence Smith. She later married
Roy Bovinet and he also preceded her in death.
Several cousins and special friends, Wayne and Lucille Hicox of Flora.
Graveside services will precede burial at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty cemetery at Walpole.
Harold Miller Jr.
Harold Miller Jr., 62, of 225 East Carline St., Carrier Mills, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998 at 7:55 p.m. at Harrisburg Medical Center.
He was born on July 17, 1936, in Carrier Mills, to the late Harold and Alma (Jenkins) Miller Sr.
Mr. Miller was a retired mechanic and also served as a minister in Detroit until he became ill. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He attended the Carrier Mills Abundant Life Church.
He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Otis and Betty Miller of Carrier Mills, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills, where visitation will be held after 11 a.m. until service time. The Rev. Carl Shelton will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery near Carrier Mills.
Mary Catherine Howard
Mrs. Mary Catherine Howard, 73, of 710 S. Granger St. in Harrisburg, was dead on arrival at Harrisburg Medical Center Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 22, 1998.
The body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at McKinley Avenue Baptist Church. Robert Howard will officiate.
Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg is in charge of the arrangements.
Twila (Carner) Pritchett
Mrs. Twila (Carner) Pritchett, 66, wife of Charles "Chuck" Pritchett, of New Lenox, formerly of Carrier Mills, died on Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998 at her home.
She was born in July 1932, to the late Darwin and Edith (Russell) Carner.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by five children, Jim Pritchett of Coal City, Rick Pritchett of Groves, Texas, Dicki Curry of New Lenox, Patty Fuse of Joliet, and Charles Darwin Pritchett, at home; five brothers and sisters, Maxine Sullivan of Carrier Mills, Monzell Clements of Lodi, Calif., Larry Carner of Marion, Marilyn K. Carner of Thompsonville, and Susie Datwyler of Milroy, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Harris and two infant brothers.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Blackburn Funeral Home in Joliet, where friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Joliet.
