George Cox
George Cox, 80, of Golconda, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at 11:40 p.m. at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion.
He was a mechanic and a World War II Army Veteran.
Mr. Cox retired after 17 years with the Pope County Unit School District 1 and was a member of the Gospel Mission Church in Golconda.
He was born on May 24, 1918, in Pope County, to the late Virgil and Millie (Kirtner) Cox.
He married
Vivian Randolph of Golconda on May 12, 1953. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Harold Cox of Mount Vernon and Virgil Cox of Golconda; a daughter, Alice Shell of Lebanon, Tenn.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Georgia Ann Cox, and six brothers and sisters.
Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Gospel Mission Church in Golconda. The Rev. Billy Green and the Rev. Roy Hughes will officiate. Burial will be in Sulphur Springs cemetery, east of Eddyville.
Aly Funeral Home of Golconda is in charge of the arrangements.
Mattie Smith
Mrs. Mattie Smith, 79, of 801 Sahara St., Harrisburg, died at 8:23 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1998, in Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Ky.
She was the widow of Archie Smith. He preceded her in death on June 21, 1966.
Mrs. Smith was born in Hardin County on May 10, 1919, to the late John A. and May (Showalters) Goolsby.
She was formerly employed as a food supervisor for the Illinois Department of Corrections from which she retired in 1988.
She was a member of Dorrisville Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lou Cox of Bridgeview; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary Joe and Kathy Smith of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Joe and Sarah Smith of Harrisburg, and David and Debbie Cox of Bridgeview and three great-grandchildren, David, Gregory and Danny Cox of Bridgeview.
Also surviving are two brothers, Joe Goolsby of Collinsville and Tom Goolsby of Uniontown, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers, Alfonso, Wayne, Milford and John Goolsby Jr. and a son-in-law, Lindell Cox.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998 at J.M. Weirauch Funeral Home in Harrisburg, where friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Mark Haumschilt will officiate. Burial will be in Fluorine cemetery in Rosiclare.
Johnie H. Benefield
Johnie H. Benefield, 82, of Bowling Green, Ky., died in BrittHaven of Bowling Green, Ky., at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998.
He was born in Adamsville, Ala. on Dec. 1, 1915, son of the late Ott and Marion (Lipp) Benefield.
He was an electrician for the Fast Electric. He was a member of the Rich Pond Baptist Church, Eldorado Masonic Lodge No. 730, and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mildred Pool; two sons, Bill Benefield and Gary Benefield, all of Bowling Green; a sister, Marjorie Brookshire of Lexington, Ky.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Arnold Benefield and Carl Benefield.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapel, 820 Lovers Lane, Bowling Green, where friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Masonic rites will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Bowling Green Gardens.
Expressions of sympathy may go to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association or Building Fund of Rich Pond Baptist Church.
Orpha Frances Braden
Mrs. Orpha Frances Braden, 88, of Galatia, died at 12:45 a.m., Oct. 1, 1998 at her residence.
She married
John Robert Braden on Feb. 13, 1929, in Mount Vernon. He survives.
Mrs. Braden was born on April 29, 1910, in Williamson County, to the late Gus and Nora (Chase) Newman.
She was a member of Brushy Fork Primitive Baptist Church in Harco.
She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Gene Braden, an infant son, Robert Newman Braden, a brother, Ralph Greeney, and a sister, Ruth Travelstead.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia, where friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. The Rev. John Odell and the Rev. Mervin Drake will officiate. Burial will be in Brushy cemetery in Harco.
Bessie Brown
Mrs. Bessie (Grimes) Brown, 93, of 801 Sahara St., Harrisburg, died at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998 at Saline Care Center.
She married
Edgar Grimes in 1921 and he preceded her in death in 1951. In 1961, she married
Miley Brown, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Brown was born on Dec. 29, 1904, in Saline County, to the late Fred and Nancy Jane (Hall) Edwards.
She was a member of Dorrisville Baptist Church in Harrisburg and the Rebekah Lodge.
Surviving are three daughters, Marjorie Davis of Harrisburg, Loretta Leslit of Richland, Ind. and Wilma Joiner of Punta Gorda, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; a brother, Fie Edwards; and three sisters, Mae Reed, Hazel Clarke and Stella Edwards.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Mark Haumschilt will officiate and burial will be in Lindale cemetery at Eldorado.
John E. Hays
John E. Hays, 75, of 616 S. Land St., Harrisburg, died at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.
He was born on May 18, 1923, in Harville, Mo., to the late William and Nola (Dawsey) Hays.
He was a Nursing Aid at Veterans Medical Center and a World War II Army Veteran.
Mr. Hays was a member of Miracle Temple in Wasson and American Legion in Norris City.
On Aug. 6, 1955, he married
the former Mildred Thacker. She survives along with a step-sister, Madge Churchwell of Carmi; and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Martha Jean Hays.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg, where friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Tom Flewellen will officiate and burial will be in Union Ridge cemetery in New Haven.
Lester Lee
Lester Lee, 79, of 5555 Hwy. 13, W. of Harrisburg died at 3:23 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998 at Harrisburg Medical Center.
He was born on Jan. 19, 1919, in Mobile, Ala., to the late Theodore and Goldia (Douglas) Lee.
He was owner/operator of Home Improvements Co. and a World War II Army Veteran.
He is survived by his wife, the former, Dorothy Kinsey. They were married
on Nov. 6, 1962. Other survivors include three daughters, Linda Casey of Cabool, Mo., Shirley Johnson of Chicago, and Diane Phillip of West Plains, Mo.; a step-daughter, Mary Hicks of Mansfield, Mo.; two step-sons, James Matthews of Midlothian, and James Matthews of Crete; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Nelson Lee of Kansas; and two sisters, Bernice Lee of Elgin, and Katie Lee of Texas.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg, where friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Mark Hutson will officiate and burial will be in Salem cemetery at Carrier Mills.
Marty Pyle
Marty Pyle, 56, died at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998 at his home, 107 Maple St., Carrier Mills.
He was born on April 11, 1942, in Carrier Mills to the late John C. and Hazel Martin Pyle.
He was an Army veteran and a member of the Carrier Mills American Legion.
Surviving are two sons, Tom Pyle of Lincoln, Mich. and Jon Pyle of Whitefish, Mont.; a granddaughter, Ashley Ann Pyle of Lincoln; a sister, Evanell Graves of Attica, Mich.; and a brother, James Pyle of Goodrich, Mich. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Pyle.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills, where friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Salem cemetery with military rites by the Carrier Mills and Harrisburg American Legion Posts.
