Lyle (Hunk) Wood, 77, of Rosiclare, died at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997 at his home.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Hosick Funeral Home in Rosiclare.
Johnie Mocaby
Johnie Mocaby, 85, of Thompsonville, died at 2:01 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996 at his home.
He was born on Jan. 26, 1911 in Thompsonville to the late George W. and Ellen Plumlee Mocaby.
He was a retired farmer and rural mail carrier.
Mr. Mocaby was a member of Liberty Methodist Church and the Rural Letter Carriers Association.
On Feb. 16, 1934, in Thompsonville he married
the former Jean McNeill and she survives. Also surviving are four sons and three daughters-in-law, Lyndell and Deana Mocaby of Irvine, Calif., Donald and Pat Mocaby of Whittington, Carl Mocaby of Thompsonville and Paul and Debbie Mocaby of West Frankfort; a sister, Marjorie Mabry of Thompsonville; a daughter-in-law, Pat Mocaby of California; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, George Mocaby in 1993; a brother, Billy Mocaby; and a sister, Gladys Gregory.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Ron Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Liberty cemetery.
Henry H. "Sam" Barter
Henry H. "Sam" Barter of 319 Country Club Lane, Harrisburg died at 5:37 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996 at Harrisburg Medical Center.
He owned and operated J. D. Barter Construction Co. and Barter Enterprises.
Mr. Barter was born in Harrisburg in the Cain community to the late J.D. and Mable Brothers Barter.
He was a World War II Army veteran with service in the Army Corps of Engineers and he spent three years in Okinawa. He was a member and former president of Associated General Contractors of Illinois, 55-year member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 318, member of 40&8, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was also a former Harrisburg Man of the Year.
As an international contractor, he built highways in Haiti and Kuwait.
He married
the former Virginia Warren on Feb. 6, 1962. She survives along with two sisters, Hazel Thomas of Pana and Dorothy Vinyard of Tampa, Fla.; a brother, Jewell D. Barter of Harrisburg; and nieces and nephews.
Private family services will be held in Harrisburg with Rev. Dr. Linda Berry officiating. Burial in Sunset Gardens cemetery in Harrisburg.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27 at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg.
Frank "Buddy" McLain Jr.
Frank "Buddy" McLain Jr., 67, of Equality, died at 6:03 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 1996 in Hardin County General Hospital in Rosiclare.
He was born on July 10, 1929 in Eldorado to the late Frank Sr. and Roberta Bluff McLain.
He was a farmer.
On July 28, 1958, in Shawneetown, he married
the former Lucille Hobbs, who survives. Also surviving are two stepdaughters and son-in-laws, Nina Patton and Dewey Johnson of Eldorado and Linda and Harry Spivey of Cave-in-Rock; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two nieces, including Robie Stanley of Harrisburg; cousins, Robert and Lou McLain of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a stepsister, Anne Raleigh, Louisville, Ky.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Equality United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Miller officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at Equality.
Visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home in Equality.
Kenneth Vinyard
Kenneth Vinyard, 72, formerly of Rosiclare, died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996 at University of Chicago Hospital.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Leben of Laredo, Texas; two sisters, Lena White of Cicero and Doris Eskew of Kankakee; a brother, Carl Vinyard of Rosiclare; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Gladys Baker; his parents, Virgil and Lanie Drumm Vinyard.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Cox Funeral Home in Rosiclare, where visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Lowell Gowins will officiate and burial will be in Vinyards Chapel at Karbers Ridge.
Imogene Powell
Mrs. Imogene Powell, 66, of 890 Jenny Ridge Road, Carrier Mills, died at 4:20 p.m. Monday 23, 1996 at Carbondale Memorial Hospital due to complication in surgery.
She was born on March 5, 1931, in Evansville, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; and three sisters.
Surviving are a daughter, Connie Jean Eastwood of Reed, Ky.; a sister, Margaret Beard of Evansville; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Boone Funeral Homes, 5330 Washington Ave., Evansville, where friends may call from 11 a.m. to service time Thursday. Ann Gardner will officiate and burial will be in Park Lawn cemetery in Evansville.
Bill Yarbrough
Willis M. (Bill) Yarbrough, 88, of Mount Vernon, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996 in Mount Vernon Care Center.
He was born on Jan. 9, 1908, in Providence, Ky. to the late Larkin H. and Georgia E. Dame Yarbrough.
He was retired after 21 years with State Farm Insurance Co. as a district manager.
Mr. Yarbrough was a member of First United Methodist Church, past president of Rotary Club in Carmi, Mount Vernon Elks Lodge, Friends of the Mitchell Museum, and board member for Southern Illinois Conference for Retired Ministers of the United Methodist Church for several years.
On April 6, 1930, in Harrisburg he married
the former Gladys Abbott and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Stephen Yarbrough; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and three sisters.
Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. The Rev. Alan Rhein will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until the funeral hour on Friday due to the ill health of Mrs. Yarbrough.
Harold "Rusty" Hooten
Harold "Rusty" Hooten, 65, of 602 North Main St., Harrisburg, died at 1:55 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996 at his home.
He was born on July 13, 1931, in Harrisburg, to the late Elmer and Myrtle Conley Hooten.
He was a coal miner at Arclar Big Ridge Miner and a Navy veteran. He was a Baptist by faith and attended Wasson Baptist Church.
Mr. Hooten was a member of American Legion Post 167 of Harrisburg.
On Aug. 27, 1985, he married
the former Shelby Baer, who survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Deanna Warwick of Hammond, Ind.; two sons, Gary Dean Hooten of Carrier Mills and Earl Eugene Hooten of Harrisburg; a grandson, Jacob Warwick; four sisters, Nina Hooten and Norma Jean Pritchett, both of Harrisburg, Ina Drutell Jones of Portage, Ind. and Margaret Ann Matthews of Hobart, Ind. and two special friends, Norman and Paula Avery of Harrisburg.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lambert Family Funeral Home in Harrisburg, where friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Don Nelson will officiate and burial will be in Sunset Lawn cemetery with military rites by Carrier Mills Legion and Harrisburg Legion.
Cora F. Watkins
Mrs. Cora F. Watkins, 71, a resident of Carrier Mills Nursing Home, formerly of 215 South McKinley St., Harrisburg, died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996 in Harrisburg Medical Center.
She was born on Jan. 1, 1925, in Harrisburg to the late Charlie and Alta Reynolds
Survivors include a son, Billy Huff of Elizabethtown; one grandchild; and three sisters, Helen Hankins and Annadel Cox of Harrisburg and Sybil Digman of Evansville, Ind.
She was the widow of William T. Watkins. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin Reynolds and Delbert Reynolds and three sisters, Madge Short, Grace McPherson and Lulabell Peeas.
Graveside services will precede burial at 1 p.m. Friday at Sunset Lawn cemetery. The Rev. Steve Shea will officiate.
