Adolph J. Meppiel, 84, of Waterloo, died May 11, 2009, in Red Bud. He was born Nov. 21, 1924 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Adolph and Hilda (nee Wolf) Meppiel. Mr. Meppiel is survived by sons James (Susan) Meppiel and Robert (Marty) Meppiel; grandchildren Jimmie (Sonja) Meppiel, Angela (Jason) Rhoads, Dawn (Nick) Caito and Matthew Meppiel; great-grandchildren Noah, Maggie, Logan and Autumn; and a brother, John Meppiel; along with a sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Louise Meppiel (nee Simon); sisters Shirley Wamser and Mary "Mag" Kessler; and a brother, William Meppiel. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo with Pastor Dawson Miller officiating. Mr. Meppiel was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Mr. Melliel wasa decorated Army veteran of World War II and was member of the Cahokia VFW Post and the 117th Airborne and Cadets of America. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Norman Hern, 92, of Columbia, died May 14, 2009, in Belleville. He was born Oct. 12, 1916 in Fults, the son of the late Henry and Louisa (nee Rodenberg) Hern. Mr. Hern is survived by his wife, Marian Hern, nee Hite; children Norman Hern, Sandra (John) Bicklein, Mary (Joseph) Limpert, Jean Scheiber, Joyce (Dante) Scaccianoce and Laura (Earl) Dotson; a brother, Vernon (Jane) Hern; sisters Edna Easton and Erna Geisler; first cousin and her daughter Mary Fiedler and Ruth Fiedler; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a grandson Brian Hern; sister, Pauline Ludwig; and brothers Harry, Roy, Elvin and Robert Hern. Mr. Hern was a member of Assembly of God in Belleville and the UAW 325 of Hazelwood. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Raynaud officiating. Mr. Hern was buried at St. John Cemetery in Fults.
Timothy Robert McCloud, 53, of Columbia, died May 13, 2009, at his residence. He was born Nov. 5, 1955, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Clyde and Mildred "Ruth" McCloud of Millstadt. In addition to his parents, Mr. McCloud is survived by his wife Linda (nee Kelly) McCloud, whom he married in 1977; sons Justin McCloud of Millstadt and Noah McCloud of Maryville; siblings Gerald (Ginger) McCloud of Perryville, Mo, Larry (Carmen) McCloud of Sevierville, Tenn., Theresa (Bruce) Hoffmann of Columbia and Ginny (Matt-hew) Price of Opdyke; and grandchildren Jordyn, Kori and Kyle McCloud; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Mr. McCloud worked as a software trainer at Kronos Inc. in Creve Coeur, Mo., Visitation and funeral were at Twin Rivers Worship Center in St. Louis, Mo., with Rev. Charles Lance officiating. A private burial was held. Arrangements were handled by Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. Memorials may be made to Twin Rivers Worship Center House of Manna.
Floyd Godier, 81, of Prairie du Rocher, died May 13, 2009, at his residence. He was born April 9, 1928 in Prairie du Rocher, the son of the late Lloyd and Christine (nee Weber) Godier. He married Betty Bievenue in 1953 in Prairie du Rocher. In addition to his wife, Mr. Godier is survived by his children, Rick Godier (friend Garlene Morrison) of Chester, Rodney Godier of Prairie du Rocher, Dan (Susie) Godier of Waterloo, Renee (Bill) Heidle of Crossville, Tenn., and Donald (Arlene) Godier, Michelle (James) Weber and Treva McDonough of Prairie du Rocher; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Godier of Prairie du Rocher; sisters Deloris (Glenn) Bievenue of Red Bud, Irene Miller of Columbia and Ethel Bievenue of Chester; grandchildren Dawn (Bryan) Nortin, Sandy (Troy) Walker, Monica Godier, Shannon (Jeremy) Buckshot, Jenny (Jason) Knight, Dustin Godier, Devin Godier, Chrystle (Terry) Donjon, Candace "Petie" Godier, Gregory Godier, Andrea "A.J." Godier, Kerri (friend Eric Keeling) Weber, Tyler Weber, Candace Weber, Jerimy Prater and Jason McDonough; and 13 great-grandchildren; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Godier, a sister, Shirley Donius; brothers Alvin and Harold Godier; and a granddaughter, Bethany Ann Godier. Mr. Godier served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated Floyd’s Standard Service Station in Prairie du Rocher for 35 years. He then worked at Singer Furnace Company in Red Bud until his retirement. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, American Legion Post 662, Chester Eagles Club Aerie 3252 and a former member of the 40 and 8 in Prairie du Rocher. Visitation was at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. Funeral was at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairie du Rocher with Father Daniel Jurek officiating. Memorials may be made to the Prairie du Rocher Community Park Fund or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Arnold Steibel, 96, of Red Bud, formerly of Prairie du Rocher, died May 20, 2009, at Red Bud Regional Hospital. He was born May 1, 1913, in Prairie du Rocher, the son of the late Victor and Josephine (nee Boyer) Steibel. He married Naoma Drury in 1943 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairie du Rocher. She died in 1985. Mr. Steibel is survived by his daughters, Fay Stamm of Waterloo and Carla Minn-emann of Athens, Ala.; grandchildren Kimberly (Daniel) Hannon of Columbia, Rebecca Wiggers of Waterloo and Darla (Jim) Baker of rural Red Bud; and great-grandchildren Tara and Kyle Hannon and Brett an Ryan Wiggers; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Steibel was preceded in death by sons-in-law Henry Urspruch and Vernon Minnemann; a brother, Robert Steibel; a sister, Zeda DeRousse; and a granddaughter, Tammy Stamm. Mr. Steibel was a petroleum salesman for Farm Service for more than 40 years and served as the mayor of Prairie du Rocher. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus 3790 in Chester, a former school board member and the La Guainnee Society. There was no visitation. Funeral was at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairie du Rocher with Father Daniel Jurek officiating. He was buried at the church's cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. Memorials may be made to Backstoppers in St. Louis, Mo., or the Alzheimer Care Unit at Oak Hill in Waterloo.
Fay Ingram Volkert, 83, of Jefferson City, Mo., died May 22, 2009, at St. Mary's Health Center. She was born on Nov. 2, 1925, in Murphysboro, the daughter of the late Louis Alexis and Audrey Lou Pearl Smith Ingram. She married Joyce Leonard Volkert in 1943, in Clayton, Mo. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Volkert is survived by a daughter, Suzanne (Harry) Richter, Jefferson City, Mo.; sons Timothy Volkert of Hannibal and Brian Volkert of Jefferson City, Mo; and in-laws Lou Ellen and Michael Lewis; along with 16grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Alexis Volkert. A homemaker all her life, Mrs. Volkert worked for Sears in Bridgeton, Mo. in customer service. She retired in 1996. Mrs. Volkert was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church. Private family services were scheduled for a later date. Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Maxine Trost, nee Politsch, 78, of Waterloo, died May 22, 2009, in Glen Carbon. She was born Dec. 18, 1930, in Lenzburg. Mrs. Trost is survived by her children Wilma (Michael) Ruby of O'Fallon and Barbara (Mark) Ehrhardt of North Aurora; grandchildren Sarah (Matthew) Cundiff, Laura (Brian) McCunney, Lisa (Jarad) Yunguirt, Alex Ehrhardt, Lauren Ehrhardt and Drew Ehrhardt; brothers Albert (Ruth) Politsch, Walter (Fran) Politsch and Ralph (Arlene) Politsch; and a sister, Helen (George) Day. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, along with numerous brothers and sisters. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor Dale Edwards officiating. She was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Kenneth Hartman Sr., 72, Waterloo, died May 26, 2009, in St. Louis. He was born May 17, 1937, in Waterloo, the son of the late Marcellus and Mildred (nee Meyer) Hartman. Mr. Hartman is survived by his wife, Joann Hartman, nee Feldker; a son, Kenneth (Anita) Hartman Jr. of Waterloo; grandchildren Amanda Chris-tine Hartman, Alexis Rose Hartman and Ashley Kenra Hartman; a sister, Violet (Edmund) Kueker of Waterloo; a brother-in-law, Joseph (Nadine) Feldker of Waterloo; and an aunt, Audrey Hartman of Waterloo; along with a niece, nephews and cousins. Mr. Hartman attended church at St. Paul UCC. He was a life-long farmer in Waterloo who was involved with several agricultural organizations, including the National Holstein Assoc., National Dairy Shrine, Monroe County Farm Bureau, the Corn Growers Assoc., the Dairy Superintendent at the Monroe County Fair and earned a FFA American Farmer Degree. He was also a former a director of the Monroe County Fair Assoc., served on the Monroe County Planning Commissioner and a past board member of the Illinois Holstein Assoc., Monroe Service, Gateway FS, the Illinois State DHIA, a past chairman of District Mid American Dairyman, Monroe County Land Use Committee and 4H Leader. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was St. Paul UCC in Waterloo with Pastor Doug Roberts officiating. Mr. Hartman Sr. was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, the American Cancer Society and the Monroe County Farm Bureau Foundation.
Ruth Elaine Frierdich, nee Armbrecht, 62, of Waterloo, died May 21, 2009 at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Louis, MO. She was born Jan. 1, 1947 in Red Bud, the daughter of the late Oliver and Gladys (nee Foslar) Armbrecht. Mrs. Frierdich is survived by her husband, Wolfgang Frierdich; daughters Christine Frierdich of Waterloo and Angela (Jerome) Mehrtens of Cadet, Mo; sons Scott (Robin) Frierdich of DeSoto, Mo.; Aaron (Melissa) of Blackwell, Mo.; brothers Don (Janet) Armbrecht of Waterloo, David (Diane) Armbrecht of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Dean (Ellen) Armbrecht of Waterloo; sisters Eileen (Fred) Johannsen of Miami, Okla., Carol (Alvin) Gruber of Waterloo, Lois (Norman) Rabbermann of Waterloo and Mary (John) Ford of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; along with nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Frierdich was preceded in death by a granddaughter. Visitation and funeral were at DeFabio Funeral Home with the Pastor Tony Troup officiating. James "Jim" Francis Shrewsbury, 61, of Albuquerque, NM., died May 26, 2009, following a long illness. He was born in Altoona, Penn., the son of the late Dr. George and Jane (nee Mower) Shrewsbury. Mr. Shrewsbury is survived by his wife, Mary Shrewsbury; children James and Jacqueline; siblings Joseph (Karen) Shrewsbury of Columbia, twin brother John (Brenda) Shrewsbury of Waterloo, Danny Shrewsbury; Marianne (Dennis) Smith, Constance and George Shrewsbury. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn. Mr. Shrewsbury grew up in Columbia and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He moved to New Mexico where he was employed as an engineer for General Electric and then for the Workers Compensation Administration of New Mexico. He enjoyed fishing, family time and living in the warm southwest. Visitation and funeral services were held at the Chapel of Direct Funeral Services in Albuquerque, NM. Mr. Shrewsbury was buried at Santa Fe National Cemetery with U.S. Navy Honors. Memorials can be made to the Presbyterian Hospice in Albuquerque, NM.
