June L. Degener, nee Werling, 81, of Waterloo, died June 20, 2010 in Waterloo. She was born June 8, 1929, the daughter of the late George P. and Freida K. (nee Hoffmann) Werling Sr. Mrs. Degener is survived by her children, Steve (Carol) Degener and Sandy (Mike) Pinson; grandchildren Andrea, Mark and Brett Degener, and Michael Pinson; sister, Marjorie Bottiaux; brother, Jules Werling; and sister-in-law, Helen Werling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert “Wib” L. Degener; brothers George Werling Jr. and Nelson Werling; and a sister, Geraldine Werling Krause. Mrs. Degener was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ of Waterloo and was an avid golfer. Visitation is Tuesday, June 22, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Wednesday, June 23, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul UCC with Pastor David Gerth officiating. Mrs. Degener will be buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Frank J. Kupinkski Jr., 69, of Red Bud, formerly of Belleville, died Thursday, June 24, 2010 at his residence. He was born Feb. 26, 1941, in East St. Louis, the son of the late Frank and Julia (nee Thomas) Kupinski Sr. He married Sharon Coder on July 21, 1962 in East St. Louis. In addition to his wife, Mr. Kupinski is survived by his wife, Sharon Coder; children Ed (Lisa Wittenauer) Kupinski of Hecker; Cindy VanHoose of Arnold, Mo., and Rick (Amie) Kupinski of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Brittany VanHoose, Dakota Kupinski and Conor McHenry; a brother, Ken (Lexie) Kupinski of Glen Carbon; and a sister, Judy (Ed) Venorsky of Swansea; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Kupinski had been a captain on the Belleville Fire Department Local 53 during his 31 years with the department. He also served nine years with the East St. Louis Fire Department. Visitation is Monday, June 28, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. Funeral is Tuesday, June 29, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Brad Gruenwald officiating. Mr. Kupinski will be buried at the Red Bud City Cemetery.
James W. Novak, 69, of Waterloo, died June 25, 2010 in St. Louis. He was born May 23, 1941, the son of the late Frank J. and Orlena (Schmitz) Novak. Mr. Novak is survived by his wife, Frances Novak, nee Schmitz; daughter, Stephanie (Jerry) Koester; grandchildren, Jonathan and Samantha Koester; sisters and brothers, Lucille (William) Wetzler, Jerry (Susan) Novak, Helen (Henry) Koch and Pat (Lonny) Schmidt; aunts, Darlene Wetzler and Irene Fausz; alone with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Glenn Juelfs; nephew, Billy Wetzler; and in-laws. Mr. Novak was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Church and was interested in softball, basketball, baseball, NASCAR, and football. Visitation was Tuesday, June 29 at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was Wednesday, June 30 at SS Peter & Paul Church with Father Osang Idagbo officiating. Mr. Novak was buried at SS Peter & Paul Cemetery. Betty Anne (Hubbs) Houseknecht, 78, of Belleville and formerly of Columbia, died June 26, 2010, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville. She was born May 9, 1932, in East St. Louis, daughter of the late Harry and Della Mae (Green) Hubbs. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, where she had participated in the Women's League and was a past Sunday School teacher. She was a retired secretary, having worked at Golden Dipt, Millstadt, IL, and Columbia City Hall. Survivors include a son, Jim Houseknecht of Waterloo; daughter, Ellen (Jeff) Grueninger of Columbia; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Bentrup of Ballwin, Mo., and Andrew Grueninger of Edwardsville; a great-grandchild, Abigail Bentrup, along with other relatives and friends. Visitation was Tuesday, June 29 at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral was Wednesday, June 30, at Lawlor Funeral Home, with Pastor Bob Goddard, officiating. Burial was at Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery, Columbia. Memorials may be made to her church.
Ollen W. Ramey, 84, of Valmeyer, died June 26, 2010 in Belleville. He was born November 25, 1925 in Carlinville, the son of the late John William and Sara Janette (Stokes) Ramey. Mr. Ramey is survived by his wife, Annabelle (nee Krack) Ramey; sons, James (Janell) Ramey, Harold (Chris) Ramey, Keith (Diane) Ramey; daughters, Elizabeth (Mark) Ambrose, Sharon (Ervin) Sanders, Linda Ramey, JoAnn Bean, and Debbie Russell; brother, Dale (Betty) Ramey; sister Martha Jean Wolf; eight grandsons; nine granddaughters; nine great-grandsons; 10 great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marianna (nee Huff) Ramey; sons, Robert Ramey and Stephen Gold; granddaughter, Megan Ramey. Mr. Ramey graduated from Litchfield High School, served in the Army from 1944-1946, graduated from the University of Illinois in 1950, was plant superintendent at Prairie Farms Dairy, moved to Mountain Home, Ark. in 1992 then moved to Valmeyer in 2006 and was a member of Emmanuel Church. Visitation was Monday, June 28 at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo. Funeral was Tuesday, June 29 at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Martin officiating. Mr. Ramey was buried at Mayfield Memorial Park in Carlinville.
Betty Jean Lambert, 79, of Columbia, died Dec. 28, 2014 at Red Bud Regional Hospital. She was born March 19, 1935 in Sikeston, Mo., the daughter of the late Sylvester and Rachel Isaacs. Betty married Jesse Lambert in 1956. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Lambert is survived by her children, Kevin Mack Lambert of Dupo, Barbara Jean (Jay) Hughes Columbia and Jeffery Lynn (Maryanne) Lambert Columbia; grandchildren, Loren Nemetz, Matthew Lambert, Justin Hughes, Nicole Hughes, Ben Lambert and Jessica Lambert; and her great-granddaughter Alexis Sue. She was preceded in death by her step-father, John F. Woods; and a brother, Charles Isaacs. Betty and Jesse Lambert owned and operated Bud and Betty Bakery in Cahokia for 10 years. She attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. It was Betty’s wishes to be cremated. There were no services. Arrangements were handled by Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud.
Shirley L. DeVore, nee Braddy, 78, of Waterloo, died Dec. 27, 2014 in St. Louis. She was born Dec. 31, 1935 in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of the late Albert and Cecil (nee Shores) Braddy. Mrs. DeVore is survived by her son, Steven DeVore; son-in-law, Norlen Meton; and sisters, Betty (Charles) Owens and June Newton; along with nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold DeVore; daughter Kimberly Meton; sister Patsy Tolley; and brother-in-law Delbert Tolley; along with brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A private graveside service was at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Belleville. Memorials may be made to Oak Hill - Whispering Pines.
Charles Lester Schmeding, 61, of Waterloo, died Dec. 25, 2014 in Belleville. He was born Feb. 4, 1953, in Red Bud, the son of the late Lester William and Esther Louise (nee Buettner) Schmeding. Mr. Schmeding is survived by his sister, Carol Schmeding; niece, Angie Kraft; nephew, John (Jessica) Kraf; great-nieces and great-nephews, Xaviour, Karla, James, Jeremiah, Elizabeth and Joseph; and a great-great niece, Anna-Maria; along with cousins. Mr. Schmeding attended Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Ostlund officiating.
Doris H. Quinn, nee Ryan, 84, of Red Bud, died Dec. 26, 2014 in Maryville. She was born Sept. 13, 1930, in Renault, the daughter of the late Matthew and Pearl (nee Donjon) Ryan. Mrs. Quinn is survived by her husband, Orrin A. Quinn; children, Orrin A. Quinn, Brian (Dana) Quinn, Bruce (Lisa) Quinn and Matthew Quinn; 12 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Melba Ryan; and his brother-in-law, L. E. Williams; along with nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings Matthew W. Ryan, Lorraine M. Brueggemann and Mary E. Williams; and a step-grandson Jamie A. Quinn. Mrs. Quinn attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud. She was a member of the Red Bud VFW Auxiliary. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud with Msgr. Dennis R. Schaefer officiating. Mrs. Quinn was buried at the church’s cemetery. Judy Heck, 64, of Millstadt, died Dec. 16, 2014. She was born May 23, 1950 in Red Bud, the daughter of the late Roland and Elsie (nee Schultheis) Henerfauth. Heck is survived by her sisters, Linda (Frank) Ratay, Jean (Timothy) Sullivan, Norma (Christopher) Farrell and Ida Bassett; brothers, Louis (Charlotte) Henerfauth and Robert (Ardis) Henerfauth; brother-in-law, Charles Stewart; seven nephews; and seven nieces, along with great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Thelma Stewart; a brother, Earl R. Henerfauth, Sr.; an infant brother; and her nephew, Kenneth Henerfauth. Heck was formerly employed at Monroe County Court House. She was a member of the SIU Alumni Association and the Violence Prevention Center of Belleville. Judy enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and studying her family’s history. A private memorial service was held. Memorials may be made to the Violence Prevention Center of Belleville.
