Gregory A. Young, 43, of Baldwin, died March 18, 2011 in a boating accident at Baldwin Lake. He was born Oct. 15, 1967 in Belleville, the son of Gerald and Patricia Young. In addition to his parents, Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Nancy (nee Walker) Young; children Amanda, Cody and Kyle Young; a brother, Michael (Wendi) Young; and nieces and nephews Megan Jones, Lauren Jones, Hannah Jones, Tyler Young and Emma Young; along with aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Joseph and Pauline Young and grandparents Albert and Thelma Asbury. Mr. Young was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Waterloo and was a member of the He-Man Club. Visitation is Monday, March 21, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Waterloo. Funeral is Tuesday, March 22, at 10 a.m., at the church with Pastor Steve Niell officiating. Mr. Young will be buried at the Red Bud City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to his church. Fern C. Boien, 87, of Waterloo, died March 20, 2011 in Red Bud. She was born April 29, 1923 in Moredock, the daughter of the late Herman & Ida (nee Frank) Boien. Mrs. Boien is survived by her son, Joseph (Janet) Maul of Waterloo; grandsons Ken and Steve Maul; great-grandchildren Jason Maul, Cassandra Crase, Andrew Maul, Nichole Murphy, Ashley Maul, Robert Maul and Stephanie Maul; and great-great-grandchildren Tyler and Elia Crase. She was preceded in death by her siblings Leo, Earl, Raymond and Mabel. Mrs. Boien was a lifelong member of Zoar UCC in New Hanover, but recently was attending St. Paul UCC in Waterloo. She was a longtime volunteer at the Monroe County Nursing Home. Visitation is Tuesday, March 22, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Lewis W. Lich, 87, of Waterloo, died March 20, 2011 in Waterloo. He was born July 24, 1923 in Burksville, the son of the late George and Mary (Steinsieck) Lich. Mr. Lich is survived by sons, Lennis (Waleah) Lich of Waterloo and Lance Lich of Clayton, Mo.; and a daughter, Lyla Lich of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorena (nee Kohlmeier) Lich; sister, Helen Wild; and a brother, Alois Lich; along with brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Mr. Lich was a member of St. John UCC Church of Maeystown, a former secretary of Burksville Cemetery Board, former Monroe County Zoning board member and volunteered at the Waterloo Senior Center Meals On Wheels. Orville H. "Butch" Bockhorn, 84, of Waterloo, formerly of Steeleville, died March 21, 2011, at his home in Waterloo. He was born Feb. 20, 1927 in Blair, the son of Ernest Bockhorn and Martha (Hogrefe) Bockhorn. Mr. Bockhorn is survived by his wife, Barbara Bockhorn; children, Steve and Julie Bockhorn of Cadiz, Ky., Sandy and Michael Kocelko of Naperville, Cathy and Gene Rose of Oswego, Gary and Rhonda Bockhorn of Waterloo and Lori and Jim Cundiff of Western Springs; grandchildren, Chris and Amie Bockhorn, Eric and Tricia Bockhorn, Becky Kocelko, Laura Kocelko, Jennifer Kocelko, Sydney Bockhorn, Abby Cundiff, Bea Cundiff, Charley Cundiff and David Cundiff; great-grandchildren, Ella Bockhorn, Emery Bockhorn, Kadence Bockhorn, Aubrianna Bockhorn, Peyton Bockhorn and Joey Kocelko; brothers, Kenneth (Dot) Bockhorn and Willie(Laverne) Bockhorn; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis (Bernie) Bockhorn. He was preceded in death by brothers, Marvin, Wayne and Earl. Mr. Bockhorn served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired after 32 years as a pressman at World Color Press. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, B.B.K. American Legion Post 480, the Randolph County Farm Bureau and the Graphic Communication Local 383. Visitation was at Wilson’s Funeral Home in Steeleville. Funeral was at Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville with Rev. S. Blake Duncan officiating. Floyd O. Evans Jr., 75, of Millstadt, died March 22, 2011 at Memorial Convalescent Center in Belleville. He was born Nov. 25, 1935 in East St. Louis, the son of the late Floyd O. Evans Sr. and Faye Mallory. Mr. Evans is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jane Evans; a daughter, Debra Ann (Jack) Petty of Collinsville; sons Frank O. (Billie) Evans of Glen Carbon, Tim (Joni) Evans of Millstadt and Robert (Dede) Evans of Heber Springs, Ark.; step-mother, Mary J. Evans of Millstadt; grandchildren David (Andrea) Petty, Shanna (Craig) Hofmeister, Nick (Rita) Ivey, Ashley (Clayton Cardella) Evans, Brittany Evans and Austin Evans; and brothers Michael Evans of Millstadt, Jim Mallory of East Carondelet and Bill Mallory of Dupo; along with nine great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Floyd retired after working 29 years at Phillips Petroleum in Sauget. He was an avid baseball player and fan. Gary D. Deterding, 56, of Prairie du Rocher, died March 23, 2011 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis. He was born June 19, 1953 in Red Bud, the son of the late Norvel “Bud” and Dorothy (nee Esker) Deterding. Mr. Deterding is survived by sons, Nick (Jennifer) Deterding of Prairie du Rocher and Ben Deterding of Red Bud; sisters, Kathy (Dale) Schilling of Evansville and Pat (Dave) Reinhold of Prairie du Rocher; brother, Ronnie (Paulette) Deterding of Prairie du Rocher; and grandchildren, Nathan, Kalee and Conner Deterding. Mr. Deterding was a front-end loader and truck driver at Beelman Truck Co. He was of the Catholic Faith. Mr. Deterding was cremated and a memorial mass will be Saturday, March 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairie du Rocher with Father Daniel Jurek officiating.
Ruby Marie Kipping, nee Bennett, 78, of Lenzburg, died March 24, 2011 in O’Fallon. She was born March 2, 1933 in Banner, Mo. Mrs. Kipping is survived by her husband, Gregory Kipping; children Vicki (Robert) Miller, Terry Glotfelty, Cindy (Dale) Heusohn, Sheri (Michael) Mize, Timothy Glotfelty and Greg Glotfelty; grandchildren Angela Ferrin, Jay Miller, Brad (Jennifer) Glotfelty, Shelly (Kevin) Hemker, Heather (Derek) Hawkins and Nathan Heusohn; great-grandchildren Brayden Glotfelty, Kalei Ferrin and Paige Hawkins; sisters, Lucille Wagner, Peggy Althoff, Freeda (Allen) Whelan. Shirley (Ronald) Jaenke and Nelda (Tommy) Crocker; step-mother, Delphia Bennett; and a sister-in-law, Sheila Bennett; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Harvey E. Weilbacher, 85, of Columbia, died March 25, 2011, at Barnes Jewish Medical Center. He was born June 8, 1925 in Columbia, the son of the late Richard H. and Frances M. (Herrmann) Weilbacher. He married Bernice (Helfrich) Weilbacher in 1949. She had passed away April 23, 1997. Mr. Weilbacher is survived by sons, Daniel (Cybele) Weilbacher and Gerald (Patricia) Weilbacher of Columbia; grandchildren, Katherine Anne Wilson, Erica Cybele and Charli Elise Weilbacher, and Brianna Christine and Courtney Ann Weilbacher; and a niece, Michelle (Brian Handyside) Toenjes of Columbia; along with great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary K. Wilson; and sister and brother-in-law, Lorene and Urban Merlenbach. Mr. Weilbacher attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he was a Third Degree Knights of Columbus of Council 6165 for more than 60 years. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 513 for over 40 years. He retired as a plant engineer at Bussen Quarry. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. Mr. Weilbacher was buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Columbia Volunteer Fire Dept. Frances Postel-Braswell, 93, of Belleville, died March 25, 2011 at Columbia Convalescent Center. She was born Aug. 18, 1917, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of the late Philip and Besse (nee Holnback) Postel. She grew up in Mascoutah and married David M. Braswell Jr. in 1942 in Reading, Penn. They lived on the East Coast before moving to Belleville in 1948. Mrs. Braswell is survived by her children Joan Braswell of Belleville, David M. (Marcia) Braswell of Maeystown, Philip (Marina) Braswell of Washington, D.C., and Carol Robbins of New York, N.Y.; a brother, Charles (Gloria) Postel of Rockbridge; and grandchildren Adam and Casey Robbins and Rebekah and Grant Braswell. She was preceded in death by her husband. Frances Postel Braswell earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1939 from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, and a Master’s Degree in 1979 from Webster University in St. Louis, Mo. She was employed by IBM in New York City from 1939-1940 and was a USO program director at Fort Dix, N.J. from 1940-42. In the 1950s Mrs. Braswell helped create and produce The Sample Fair for Memorial Hospital. She became the first woman on the Belleville Township High School Board of Education, where she served from 1959-62. In 1966 she produced the weekly “Journey Through Darkness” television interview show for the Metropolitan Church Federation on KPLR-TV Channel 11 and KSD radio. For her efforts, Mrs. Braswell was awarded the Citation of Honor in 1967 by the Church Women United of Illinois, the St. Louis Wellesley Club Woman of the Year for 1969 and the St. Clair County Health and Welfare Council’s Community Service Award in 1970. Mrs. Braswell served on the Belleville Area College’s Board of Trustees from 1985-87. She was also a member of the League of Women Voters, Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary member for more than 50 years, St. Louis Wellesley Club, St. Clair County Historical Society, Belleville Philharmonic Society, KETC Channel 9’s Advisory Board; Delta Kappa Gamma (Honorary), Union United Methodist Church, Deborah Circle and P.E.O. Chapter HR. Besides her many community responsibilities, she was an avid bridge and tennis player and enjoyed swimming until she turned 89. In college she was on the crew team and was captain of the baseball team. Frances and her late husband David traveled extensively and actively pursued the broadening of their knowledge. Funeral is Saturday, April 23, at 11 a.m. at Union United Methodist Church in Belleville with Rev. Ed Weston officiating. A reception will follow at McKinley Hall. By her request, her body was donated to the Washington University School of Medicine. Memorials may be made to the Union United Methodist Church Building Fund, the Philip Postel Scholarship Fund at McKendree University, the Mascoutah Historical Society or the American Heart Association.
Catherine “Kate” Mueller, 90, of Columbia, died March 28, 2011. She was born April 25, 1920 in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Michael and Barbara Choma. She married Oscar Vernon Mueller in 1943 in East St. Louis. He died in 1989. Mrs. Mueller is survived by a son, Thomas (Pamela) Mueller of Wildwood, Mo.; daughters, Barbara (Ron) Reindl of Belleville and Carol (Howard) Sweet of Columbia; grandchildren, Debra (Dave) Kirn, Diane (Taylor White) Mueller, David Mueller, Nicole (Aaron) Steinhardt, Stacy (James) Campbell, Jeffrey (Kristen Wadiak) Sweet and Kathryn (Ryan Henson) Sweet; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Ryan Steinhardt and Tyler and Riley Kirn; a sister, Mary Garrett; and sisters-in-law, Maria Choma and Sophia Choma. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Alexander, Joseph, Michael Jr., Daniel and John Choma; a sister, Helen Choma; and brother-in-law, Elmer Garrett. Catherine, known to most as Kate or Katie, was an avid cook and John Wayne fan, who also enjoyed watching her soap operas and game shows. Mrs. Mueller attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia with Father Carl Scherrer officiating. Mrs. Mueller was buried at Mr. Carmel Cemetery in Belleville.
