Marion Louise Thompson, nee Hewitt, 82 of Greenville, Mo., died Nov. 1, 2013, at Poplar Bluff Regional Hospital. She was born April 12, 1931 in Columbia. Mrs. Thompson is survived by her husband of 64 years, Leon Thompson, Sr.; and children, Terry Wells, Bonnie Tinnin, Marilee Thompson, Jeannie Loper, Randall Thompson and Linda Lou Thompson; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son. Leon Thompson, Jr.; a daughter, Debra Lynn Thompson and her parents. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker. A private family burial was at the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia.
Martin John Schrader, 81, of Granite City, died Nov. 2, 2013. He was born Feb. 18, 1932, in Monroe County, the son of the late Herman and Alma (nee Gummersheimer) Schrader. Martin and Joyce Ann Schrader were married in 1957 at St. Paul UCC in Columbia. In addition to his wife, Mr. Schrader is survived by his children, Harwell (Lisa) Schrader of O’Fallon, Mo., Eric (Carol) Schrader of San Francisco, Calif., and Marla Schrader (Leonardo) Hosh of Silver Spring, Md.; and grandchildren, Christopher and Michael Schrader and Jonathan and Anna Hosh. John was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Paul UCC in Columbia. Mr. Schrader earned Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Mathematics from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1955. He also did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and studied theoretical physics at the University of Hannover in Germany as a Fullbright Scholar. John served in the Army from 1957-59 where he began his work with the space program with the calculation of the flight of the Jupiter-C missile which carried Explorer IV in to space. He began his career at McDonnell- Douglas Aircraft in 1959 and was involved with a variety of space programs in systems engineering, the most notable being Mercury and Gemini. Martin retired in 1998 after 39 years with the company. Martin was an active volunteer in multiple organizations including a Boy Scout scoutmaster, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of St. Louis, a chairman and host family for International Hospitality at SIUE for over 40 years. Visitation and funeral were at St. Paul UCC in Columbia with Rev. Bob Goddard officiating. Mr. Schrader was buried at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Hobart A. Baugh, 96, of Waterloo, formerly of Kampsville, died Nov. 8, 2013, surrounded by his family at Oak Hill. He was born Aug. 26, 1917, in Mozier, Mo., the son of the late William Henry and Sadie (nee Sidwell) Baugh. Mr. Baugh is survived by his daughter, Joyce Krippel of Columbia; grandchildren, Mark Baldus, Andrea (John) Kawalec and Matthew Krippel; and great-grandchildren, Nathan and Alex Kawalec. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Wanda (nee Hahn) Baugh; a daughter in infancy, Kathleen; son-in-law, Raymond Krippel; brothers, Winfred, William, Jackie, Allie and Moreland; a sister, Odessa; and a brother-in-law, Eugene. Mr. Baugh served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a chauffeur to the admiral. He was a 66-year member of the Kampsville American Legion Post 1083. Hobart was a retired truck driver and member of Teamsters Local 525. He started his career with Best Hybrid Seed Company and retired from Piasa Trucking after 45 years of employment. Hobart enjoyed hunting and boating in his younger years. He was a prankster and workaholic who loved spending time with his grandkids. Visitation and funeral were at Valhalla-Gaerdner - Holten Funeral Home. Mr. Baugh was buried at Valhalla Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Children Hospital.
Edith M. Dean, 84, of Columbia, died Nov. 10, 2013. She was born July 14, 1929, in Brave, Penn., the daughter of the late Harry and Mary Taylor Burris Sr. Edith married Alfred E. Dean in 1947. He preceded her in death in 1967. Mrs. Dean is survived by a brother, Dr. Edwin (Marjorie) Burris; a sister, Lela Vales; and sister-in- law, Ruth Burris; along with nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harry Burris, Jr. Edith graduated from Fredericktown, Mo., High School in 1946 and enrolled in Southeast Missouri State College in Cape Girardeau, majoring in Business Education and Language Arts. After receiving her Bachelor’s of Science Degree, she enrolled in Missouri University, completing her Master’s Degree specializing in the teaching of reading under Dr. Steryl A. Artley, renowned Scott Foresman author. Her teaching in the Missouri public schools included Cape Girardeau County and Fulton High School, where she served as chairman of the English Department for many years. She retired in 1991 after 43 years as a teacher. Edith moved to Columbia in 1993 where she had family. She was active in the Columbia Plan Commission, serving as chairman for several years. Edith was active in bridge groups and was an avid reader of current materials. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. A graveside service took place at the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery. Don Grover Hamilton Sr., 85, of Renault, died Nov. 11, 2013, in Red Bud. He was born Dec. 9, 1927, the son of the late George and Minnie (nee Spencer) Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton is survived by his children, Barbara Johnson, Donna (John) Fensterman, Clarence (Brenda) Hamilton, Don (Sandra) Hamilton Jr., David Wayne (Pamela) Hamilton, Brenda (David) Wetzler, Mary (David) Moll-Crowell and Jimmy (Shryl) Hamilton; and brothers, Raymond Hamilton and Homer Hamilton; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thressia (nee Jackson) Hamilton; a daughter, Sandra Hamilton; son, George Hamilton; son-in-law, Harold Johnson; and grandchildren Katie Hope and Ryan Donald Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was retired from Amtrak. Visitation is Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Courtney Lee Roscow, 19, of Red Bud, died Nov. 9, 2013, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born April 13, 1994. Ms. Roscow is survived by her son, Cayson David Murray of Red Bud; special friend, Chris Murray of Baldwin; her parents, Teryl Roscow, Laurie Roscow and Chad Collins, all of Red Bud; sisters, Rachel Anne Roscow and Tara Lee Anne Roscow, all of Red Bud; grandparents, Rebecca Rhodes of Red Bud, Alvin Roscow of Prairie du Rocher and Keith and Nancy Koester of Red Bud; and her great-grandmother, Thelma Roscow of Prairie du Rocher. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jack Rhodes. Courtney was employed by the Lau-Nae Winery. Visitation is Thursday, Nov. 14, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Koch-Liefer Funeral Home in Red Bud. Dewey "Mick" Meeks, 89, of Kimberling City, Mo., died Oct. 22, 2013. He was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Holcomb, Miss. Mr. Meeks is survived by his wife, Lucille (Schreder) Meeks of Kimberling City, Mo.; and brothers-in-law, Michael Schreder, Francis Schreder, Al Schreder and Roy (Betty) Schreder; along with nieces and nephews. A memorial service was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Madonnaville. Mr. Meeks was cremated and buried at the church’s cemetery.
Agnes C. Schaefer nee Karban, 85, of Waterloo, formerly of Millstadt, died Dec. 1, 2006, in Waterloo. She was born Jan. 13, 1921, in Paderborn, the daughter of the late Henry and Josephine Karban nee Kronenberger. She was married to the late Aloysius F. Schaefer. Mrs. Schaefer is survived by her children Robert (Cheryl) Schaefer of Millstadt, Thomas (Diane) Schaefer of Belleville, Lawrence (Connie) Schaefer of Millstadt, Richard (Sally) Schaefer of Millstadt, Gary (Terri) Schaefer of Freeburg, Michael (Ginger) Schaefer of East Alton, Mary Kay (Bob) Frierdich of Millstadt, and Tina (Adren) Walsh of Waterloo; grandchildren Tamra Link, Robby Schaefer, Holly Schaefer, Lisa Brueggeman, Adrienne Riesenberger, Julie Hanvey, Lori Bargamer, Connie Schaefer, Josh Schaefer, Michael Schaefer, Kelly Roberson, Philip Schaefer, Dakota Schaefer, Chad Frierdich, Ryan Frierdich, Katie Frierdich, Amber Walsh and Adren Walsh III; 17 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and grandson Curtis Schaefer. Mrs. Schaefer was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt. Aileen Bernice Gravot nee Sutter, 76, of Millstadt, died Dec. 3, 2006, in Millstadt. She was born Dec. 9, 1929, in Bixby, the daughter of the late Henry and Edna Sutter nee Hoock. She was married to Joseph B. Gravot in 1946. Mrs. Gravot is survived by her husband; sons Joel Gravot of St. Louis, Alan (Joanne) Gravot of Gibbstown, N.J., and Michael (Christine) Gravot of Paulsboro, N.J.; grandchildren Morgan Gravot, Aileen Gravot, Leisl Gravot and Evelyn Townsend, all of Paulsboro, N.J., and Christopher Gravot of Swansea; brother Clarence (Georgine) Sutter of Millstadt; sister Gladys (John) Fischer of Columbia; nieces Marilyn (Harold) Hughes of Millstadt, and Karen (Gerald) Rains of Belleville; nephews Norman (Sandra) Sutter, Clay (Tammi) Sutter, Kevin (Tina) Cason, all of Millstadt, Dan Cason of Hecker, and Gerald (Patricia) Fischer of Collinsville; sister-in-law Dortha May Cason of Collinsville; and other relatives and friends. Harold Fred Hoepfinger, 91, of Columbia, formerly of Dupo, died Dec. 3, 2006, in Columbia. He was born July 20, 1915, in Millstadt, the son of the late Harry and Lena Hoepfinger nee Rehg. Mr. Hoepfinger is survived by his brother Vernon A. Hoepfinger of Caseyville; sisters Mildred C. Brewster of Belleville and Carolyn P. Harris of Columbia; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Priscilla Hoepfinger, second wife Jeanette Hoepfinger, and sisters Bernice Bieller and Viola Fauerbach. Mr. Hoepfinger was a member of Christ United Church of Christ in Dupo. He was a retired foreman from the Missouri Pacific Railroad, where he worked from 1935 to 1975. He was a member of Masonic Blue Lodge 474 A.F. & A.M. in Columbia for 55 years and VFW Post #6368 in Dupo for more than 50 years. He enjoyed bowling and playing kloepper and baseball. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Visitation was at Dashner Funeral Home in Dupo. A funeral services was at Christ United Church of Christ in Dupo, Rev. Kim Kelly officiating.
