Emily Pauline Arns nee Adent, 92, of Carbondale, died Dec. 17, 2006, in Carbondale. She was born March 10, 1914, in Chicago, the daughter of the late Paul and Maryanne Adent nee Salatycka. She was married to the late Dr. Jerome L. Arns. Mrs. Arns is survived by her children Richard (Sue) Arns of St. Charles, Mo., Paula (Larry) Franklin of Makanda, Bonita (James) Vourvoulias of Park Ridge, and David (Carol) Arns of St. Charles, Mo.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Margaret Arns of Waterloo; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, seven brothers and one sister. Mrs. Arns was a U.S. Army nurse. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral mass was at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo, Msgr. Thomas Flach officiating. She is buried at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
John E. McClain, 80, of Dupo, died Dec. 17, 2006, in Waterloo. He was born Nov. 20, 1926, in White Hall. He was married to Marjorie McClain nee Steele. Mr. McClain is survived by his wife; sons Allan (Susan) Wooters, Kenneth (Jackie) Wooters, and Robert (Chris) Wooters; grandchildren Tina Marie (Brian) Harvey, Elizabeth (Tim) Lumpkin, Sabrina (Jeff) Lehan, Brandon Wooters and Eric Wooters; sisters-in-law Colleen Cooper, and Sally (Sherman) Steward; brother-in-law John (Betty) Steele; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers and sisters. Mr. McClain was a member of First Congregational Church in Dupo. He was retired from Caterpillar Tractor Company as an inspector. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. A graveside service was held at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville, Rev. Robert Lee officiating.
Agatha Vogt, 91, of Waterloo, died Dec. 17, 2006, in Waterloo. She was born Jan. 23, 1915, in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Frank H. and Margaret F. Vogt nee Shea. She is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Frances Windergerst, Helen Redler, Vincent Vogt, Walter Vogt and Alberta Price. Ardell W. “Snap” Currat, 89, of Red Bud, died Dec. 18, 2006, in Red Bud. He was born Oct. 30, 1917, in Modoc, the son of the late Lawrence J. and Gertrude Currat nee Godier. He married the late Jewell Wittenbrink in 1945. He then married the late Theda Porter Weber nee DeRousse. Mr. Currat is survived by his sister Maxine Wright of Red Bud and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; sister Beulah McIntyre and nephew Larry McIntyre. Mr. Currat owned and operated Snap & Jules Tavern in Modoc for 25 years. HE also owned and operated Snap & Jules Ferry Boat from Modoc to Ste. Genevieve. He worked for the Illinois Highway Department, Fairmont Racetrack, Johnson County Asphalt Co., and was sheriff of Randolph County for 16 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the military police in Africa. He was a member of the 40 & 8, a lifetime member of VFW Post 3553 in Chester, a member of American Legion Post 622 in Prairie du Rocher and Masonic Loge 72, was a past member of the Illinois Sheriffs Association, past member of Pierre Menard Democrat Club and Randolph County Police Association. He was an avid basketball fan and received the Musketeer Super Fan award from Red Bud High School for the 2000-2001 season. Visitation and a funeral service were at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home, Rev. James Leistico officiating. There was a military graveside service under the direction of American Legion Post 622 at St. Leo Catholic Cemetery in Red Bud. Verlee A. Hern nee Southard, 95, of Waterloo, died Dec. 18, 2006, in Waterloo. She was born Oct. 1, 1911, in Avalon, Tex., the daughter of the late Emmett L. and Nora Southard nee Kicklider. She was married to the late Fred C. Hern. Mrs. Hern is survived by relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Mrs. Hern was a member of First Baptist Church in Waterloo. She was a volunteer at Monroe County Care and Rehab Center and for the American Red Cross. Visitation and a funeral service were at Quernheim Funeral Home, Pastor Steven Neill officiating. She is buried at Valhalla Cemetery in Belleville. Mary J. Brotherton-Bommarito nee Carmody, 60, of Dupo, died Dec. 19, 2006, in Dupo. She was born Aug. 22, 1946, in St. Louis, the daughter of the late Bart Joseph and Bernice Kathryn Carmody nee Hutter. She was married to the late Frank Bommarito. She then married the late Michael Brotherton. Mrs. Brotherton is survived by her children Dale (Peggi) Bommarito and Jim (Sue) Bommarito; grandchildren Nicole, Amanda, Daniel, Nina and Grace; special great-granddaughter Emi; sisters Wonda (the late Rich) Forister, Kathy (Michael) Apollo and Peggy (Ted) Reigner; cousins Pat (Don) Crawford and Mike (Rose) Finnegan; nieces and nephews Jacqui, Kevin, Erin, Sherry, Teddy and the late Elizabeth; and other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands. Mrs. Brotherton was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dupo and the Women’s Club. She worked at Stiern Laser, Sunnen Products Co., Arundale, and Universal Printing Co. There was no visitation. A memorial mass was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dupo, Fr. Gerald Hechenberger and Fr. Paul Wienhoff officiating. “Mary lost a very long battle with breast cancer. In her 60 years on earth, she touched many, many people with her incredible personality. She will be sorely missed, but will be met in Heaven with open arms to welcome her to a better place. Mary chose to give her body to science, so that others could benefit. Even her final gesture was unselfish.”
Shirley M. Jokisch nee Ahrens, 71, of Millstadt, died Dec. 19, 2006, in Belleville. She was born July 13, 1935, in Centreville Township, the daughter of the late William M. and Aurelia Scharf nee Ahrens. She was married to the late Roy L. Jokisch. Mrs. Jokisch is survived by her children Keith R. Jokisch of Millstadt, Melissa K. Jokisch of Freeburg, and Michelle S. Sisk of Creal Springs; grandchildren Warren Michael Sisk, Derek Jay Sisk and Ashley Sisk, all of Creal Springs; sisters Marcella Mayer of Belleville, Marie (Jim) Chide of Galveston, Texas, and Ruth (Lester) King of Shiloh; brother Howard (Marjaret) Scharf of Smithton; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Michael Roy Jokisch, daughter Kelly Sue Jokisch, and brother-in-law Robert Mayer. Mrs. Jokisch was a member of Concordia United Church of Christ in Belleville. She worked as a bookkeeper for Catholic Social Service. There was no visitation or funeral service. Per her request, she was cremated. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or Freeburg Terrace.
Charles Martin Scurry, 68, of Dupo, died Dec. 20, 2006, in Dupo. He was born Nov. 15, 1938, in St. Louis, the son of the late John Charles Patrick and Audrey Emma Scurry nee Gramann. He was married to Sandy Scurry nee Dell. Mr. Scurry is survived by his wife; daughters Tracy Michelle Scurry and Lisa Ann Williams; sisters Susan (Frank) Tansley of Navarre, Fla., and Eileen (Dave) Alindugan of Redondo Beach, Ca.; and sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Scurry was U.S. Navy veteran. He retired as a foreman from Kisco Corp. and Argo Products, both in St. Louis. After he retired he worked at Al’s Automotive as a parts driver in Cahokia. He was a member of the International Association of Machinist Lodge 41 in St. Louis, Belleville Jaycees, Fairview Heights Volunteer Fire Department, Tri-County Bass Anglers, Bass Anglers of Southern Illinois and American Darters Association, and he was an avid washer player. Visitation and a funeral service were at Dashner Funeral Home, Rev. Rick Lay officiating. He is interred at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. Memorials mat be made to Family Hospice.
Monroe O. Sickmeier, 87, of Waterloo, died Dec. 20, 2006, in Columbia. He was born Jan. 13, 1919, in Prairie du Rocher, the son of the late Charles and Mary Sickmeier nee Barker. He was married to Irene H. Sickmeier nee Heller. Mr. Sickmeier is survived by his wife; children Norma (Robert) Coffel of Christopher, Gloria (Donald) Sickmeier-Goddard of Johnson City, Jerry Sickmeier of Columbia, Gail Ray (friend Brian Springton) of Prairie du Rocher, Steven (Carolyn) Sickmeier of Duluth, Ga., and Roger (Angie) Sickmeier of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister. Mr. Sickmeier was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of VFW Post 6504 in Waterloo. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service was at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pastor Tony Troup officiating. He is buried at Waterloo Cemetery. Alvin W. Lepp, 91, of Eldon, Mo., formerly of Columbia, died Dec. 26, 2006, in Lake Ozark, Mo. He was born March 2, 1915, in Columbia, the son of the late Albert W. and Katherine Lepp nee Habermehl. He married the late Bernice Lepp nee Ritter in 1938; she survived him until Jan. 11, 2007. Mr. Lepp is survived by his daughter Carol Belcher of Eldon, Mo.; son Donald (Mary) Lepp of Yankton, S.D.; grandchildren Nathan Lepp, Debbie (Phil) Thomas, Dana (Charles) VanCleave, and Dennis (Michelle) Redmond; great-grandchildren Lexi, Tori, Max, Addison, Mandy and Chas; siblings Wayne (Juanita) Ritter of Columbia, Dale (Laverne) Ritter of Benton, Ky., Marlin (Herbert) Stemler of Millstadt, Ruby (Earl) Asselmeier of Sparta, and Bernell Mueller of Columbia; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Louis and Joseph Lepp. Mr. Lepp was retired from the maintenance department of Columbia Community Unit School #4.
