Franklin Lee Dollins Sr., 69, of Dupo, died Nov. 18, 2006, in Belleville. He was born Aug. 9, 1937, in Neelyville, Mo., the son of the late John Dollins and Opal (Bill) Frederick. Mr. Dollins is survived by his former wife Patsy Dollins; children Mary (Bob) Carner, Franklin “Butch” Dollins Jr., and John (Becky) Eldrige; grandchildren Dawn (Mickey) Godare, Amanda (Joe) Bivins, Patricia Godare, Jacob Carner, Meghan (Marvin) Carner, Christopher Carner, Ryan Gloeckner, Joshua Dollins, Brandon Dollins, Tyler Eldrige, and Erin Eldrige; great-grandchildren Sierra Godare and Caitlyn Bivins; sister Mary Conigliaro; and other relatives and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, daughter Kathy Godare, granddaughter Haley Dollins, and brother Tom Dollins. Mr. Dollins was a driver for Auto Air in St. Lois and Renzenberger. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. His favorite pastimes were drinking beer and spending time with his family. He was an avid sports fan. Visitation and a funeral service were at Dashner Funeral Home, Darrell Atkins officiating. He was cremated.
Edgar O. Zimmer, 102, of Waterloo, died Nov. 18, 2006, in Columbia. He was born Jan. 18, 1904, in Maeystown, the son of the late Louis H. and Sophie C. Zimmer nee Feldmeier. He was married to the late Bonnie M. Zimmer nee Boyd. Mr. Zimmer is survived by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers William P. Zimmer, Louis H. Zimmer and Roland W. Zimmer; and sisters Lucille M. Zimmer. Leora S. McDonald and Elizabeth Hollis. Mr. Zimmer was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, the Monroe County Bar Association, was a past Worshipful Master of Morris Lodge 787 AF & AM, and was a member of the International Order of the Oddfellows. He earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of Illinois College of Commerce in 1929, and earned his law degree from the University of Illinois is 1931. He began practicing law in Monroe County in 1931, served as the Monroe County State’s Attorney from 1936 to 1960, and was recognized by the Illinois State Bar Association with the Senior Counselor designation award in 1981. He established the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale Edgar and Bonnie Zimmer law scholarship in 1984, and established the Zimmer family Foundation in 1997 to provide college scholarships to area students. Allaysa N. Porter, 13, of Marissa, called Nov. 20, 2006, in Marissa, the daughter of Michael Porter and the late Tina Porter nee Cheek. Ms. Porter is survived by her father; siblings Travis Porter, Christina (Mark) Spurlin and Tyler Porter; and aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, grandparents Clinton and Lillian Porter nee Schmidt; grandfather Daniel Cheek; and uncles Michael and Ricky. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Tina M. Porter nee Cheek, 43, of Marissa, died Nov. 20, 2006, in Marissa. She was born July 23, 1963, in Red Bud, the daughter of Emma Cheek nee Hefflinger and the late Daniel Cheek. She was married to Michael Porter. Mrs. Porter is survived by her mother Emma Cheek; husband; children Travis Porter, Christine (Mark) Spurlin, and Tyler Porter; grandson Dayshane Spurlin; siblings Ann (John) Holland, George (Pat) Cheek, Danny (Marilyn) Cheek, Sandy Jett, Donna Davis, Donald Davis, Robert (Brenda) cheek, Betty (Tom) Bievenue, Linda (Norman) Robert, Pam Selleck, Laura (Larry) Willcutt, and Arron Cheek; and sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Lelia M. Garner nee Schaper, 82, of Fults, died Nov. 22, 2006, in Fults. She was born July 8, 1924, in Warrenton, Mo., the daughter of the late Ernest and Loma Schaper nee Yocum. She was married to the late Claude A. Garner. Mrs. Garner is survived by her children James Michael Garner, Terry Lee (Jacqueline) Garner, Claudia Kay Herndon, Danny Allen Garner, and Mark Ernest (Dawn) Garner; grandchildren Mike (Suzanne) Nadeau, Brandy Garner, Mike Garner, Larissa Garner, Tracy (Darrell) Kueker, Gina Garner, Rebecca Garner, Alicia (Joseph) Martin, Neil Herndon, Christopher Garner, Jamie Heggemeier and Adam Garner; great-grandchildren Hannah Nadeau, Matthew Nadeau, Brandi Kueker, Bethany Kueker, Danielle Kueker, Dylan Kueker, Noah Martin, Ethan Martin, Emma Martin, and Kaden Heggemeier; great-great-grandchildren Lydia Kueker and Payton LaChance; brother Dr. Ernest (Myrt) Schaper; and friend and companion Wyman Melching. Mary E. Meine nee Beckman, 80, of Waterloo, formerly of East Carondelet, died Nov. 25, 2006, in Belleville. She was born March 7, 1926, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late John H. and Mary M. Beckman nee Harned. She was married to the late Stanley Dodds. Mrs. Meine is survived by her children Leslie (Linda) Dodds of Clarksville, Mo., Mary (Floyd) Weaver of Dupo, and Dorothy Dodds of Columbia; grandchildren Sherry Weaver, Tammy Weaver, Christ Barnett, Jamie (Danielle) Barnett and Elaine (Jimmy) Hausman; great-grandchildren Victoria Weaver, Constance Barnett, Brian Donelson and Chelsea Donelson; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Stanley, grandson Floyd Weaver III, broths John and Gary, and sister Ann Tarman. Roger A. Riese, 67, of Columbia, died Nov. 26, 2006, in East Carondelet. He was born Sept. 23, 1939, in Roseland, Neb., the son of the late Lester and Helen Riese nee Mitchell. He was married to the late Jackie Riese. Mr. Riese is survived by his children Vickie (Joe) Todd of West Frankfort, Judy Williams of West Frankfort, Barbara (Gary) Yrjanson of Columbia, Michael McIntyre of Dupo, and Tina (Ernest) Higgerson of East Carondelet; grandchildren Dale Gene (Jennifer) Kronk, Amanda Jean Kronk, Roger Michael Riese, Ernest Lee Higgerson III, Kelly Todd, Crystal Ann Williams, Jennifer Marie Higgerson, Jacqueline McIntyre, Joseph Wayne Higgerson, Ozzy Michael McIntyre, crystal Williams and Josh Gass; great-grandchildren Christen Leon Kronk and Bret Schumer; sisters Pat Herman of St. Louis, and Janice (Jerry) Keplinger of Godfrey; and brother Kenneth (Jan) Riese of St. Louis. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and grandson Dale Taylor Kronk. Mr. Riese was a retired mechanic and welder from Mid-Town Garage in St. Louis. He also worked for Sugarloaf Township. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and received the Good Conduct award. Visitation and a funeral service were at Dashner Funeral Home, Rev. David Liebnau officiating. Joseph A Dietz, 68, of Waterloo, died Nov. 26, 2006, in Waterloo. He was born May 11, 1938, in Waterloo, the son of the late Conrad and Lucille Dietz nee Fleming. He was married to Diane Dietz nee Erb. Mr. Dietz is survived by his son Allen Dietz of Waterloo; brother Donald (Joann) Dietz of Waterloo; sister Sister Dorothy Dietz ASC of red Bud, Mary (Robert) Toal of Waterloo, and Margaret Reinhold of Waterloo; sister-in-law Marilyn Asinger of St. Louis; brothers-in-law Kenneth (Kathy) Erb of St. Louis, Robert Erb of St. Louis, and Stan (Pat) Erb of St. Louis; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Dietz was a member of the Knights of Columbus #1334, Labor Union #1244, and the Monroe County Farm Bureau. Carl Wayne Patton, 85, of West Frankfort, died Nov. 30, 2006. He was born March 29, 1921, in Millersburg, Ind., the son of the late Archie and Mable Patton. He married Evelyn Patton nee Fleck in 1948. Mr. Patton is survived by his wife; children Dennis (Sue) Patton of Columbia, Terry (Gary) Warren of West Frankfort, Ind., and David (Theresa) Patton of West Frankfort, Ind.; brother Kenneth and sister Shirley. Mr. Patton was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in West Frankfort. He served his country as a U.S. Marine for four years, serving in the Pacific Theatre and surviving the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He retired from Central Illinois Public Service Company (now Ameren / IP) after 34 years and was a member of the Illinois Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Mr. Patton’s family remembers him as their cornerstone, missed for his wisdom, loving ways, sense of humor, teasing aggravation, blue eyes and loving smile. He had a passion for the outdoors as an avid fisherman and great hunter. He will be remembered for his never-ending thirst to serve and care for his family and to give to those less fortunate. A military service was held at Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, and he was cremated. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Clothing Room and Food Bank in West Frankfort.
Shirley J. Spurgeon nee Pennington, 59, of Valmeyer, formerly of Columbia, died Nov. 30, 2006, in St. Louis. She was born Feb. 19, 1947, in Pittsburg, Ken., the daughter of the late Roscoe and Edith R. Pennington nee Miller. She married Roger Spurgeon in 1962. Mrs. Spurgeon is survived by her husband; son Brian (Robin) Spurgeon of Valmeyer; daughter Patricia (Bruce) Stroh of O’Fallon, Mo.; grandchildren Reed Spurgeon, Wyatt Spurgeon and Andrea Stroh; brother James (Fern) Pennington of Columbia; sisters Juanita (Ivan) Linhardt of Bowling Green, Ken., and Billie (Dale) Grogan of Columbia; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and so Anthony Spurgeon. Mrs. Spurgeon attended First Baptist Church in Columbia. She was retired from Columbia Unit District #4, where she worked as an aide. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. A funeral service was at First Baptist Church in Columbia, Pastor Jonathan Peters officiating. She is buried at College Hill Cemetery in Belle, Mo.
