Evelyn J. Wedel nee Stuard, 88, of Waterloo, died July 14, 2006, in Red Bud. She was born Aug. 29, 1917, in St. Louis, the daughter of the late Charles and Cecilia Stuard nee Steppig. She was married to the late Henry G. Wedel Jr. Mrs. Wedel is survived by her children Marjorie (David) Eisenhauer of Tucson, Ariz., and Allen (Peggy) Wedel of Fults; grandchildren Julie (Kevin) Park, Scot (Dianna) Eisenhauer and Pam Wedel; step-grandchildren Adda Caldwell and Poit Caldwell; great-grandchildren Katie Park, Lauren Park and Ashley Eisenhauer; step-great-grandchildren Trinity Caldwell; sister Dolores Deffenbaugh of St. Louis; sister-in-law Frieda Kabureck of Belleville; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers and sisters. Mrs. Wedel was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Mary and Martha Society. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral mass was at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Fr. Roger Karban officiating. She is buried at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.

Lloyd W. McClain, 78, of Fults, died July 15, 2006, in Fults. He was born April 1, 1928, in East Carondelet, the son of the late Arthur F. and Olga E. McClain nee Asselmeier. He was married to Gloria McClain nee Darnell. Mr. McClain is survived by his children Dwayne McClain of Fults, Lucinda (Stephen) Birkner of Macon, Ga., Pamela LeBrot of Waterloo, and Dennis (Alicia) McClain of St. Peters; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers Charles (Delores) McClain of Belleville, Fern Chlibec of Waterloo, Joyce (Donald) Ernst of Belleville, and Janet (Gordon) Osterhage of Jefferson City, Mo.; and a sister-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sisters, one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Mr. McClain was a member of Hope Christian Church in Columbia. He was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral services were at Hope Christian Church, Pastor Darrell Jones officiating. He is buried at St. John Cemetery in Fults.

Florence E. “Speedy” Wienhoff nee Mechler, 87, of Waterloo, died July 15, 2006, in St. Louis. She was born Aug. 20, 1918, in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Mechler nee Miller. She was married to Alonzo Wienhoff. Mrs. Wienhoff is survived by step-sons Jim Wienhoff and Charles Wienhoff, and cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Mrs. Wienhoff was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Waterloo Senior Center. Visitation was at DeFabio Funeral Home. A funeral mass was at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Msgr. Thomas Flach officiating. She is buried at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to the Ss. Peter and Paul Church roof fund.

James A. Coulter, 79, of Freeburg, died July 16, 2006, in Freeburg. He was born Aug. 3, 1926, in Missouri, the son of the late Guy and Lenda Coulter nee Helms. Mr. Coulter is survived by his daughters of Linda (Jim Cudd of Lawrenceville, Ga., Brenda (Denis) DuFronne of Lubbock, Tex., and Pamela (Jackie) Nickles of Smithton; sons Gene Coulter of Chester, Thomas (Donna) Coulter of Marissa, and dean (Melissa) Coulter of Mascoutah; 11 grandchildren; four sisters; four brothers; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Margie Coulter, son James M. Coulter, and brother Richard Coulter. Mr. Coulter was a member of World Wide Church of God in Belleville. He was a machinist union member. Visitation and funeral services were at DeFabio Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Steven A. Koch Sr., of Valmeyer, died July 16, 2006, in Valmeyer. He was born Dec. 26, 1922, in Harrisonville, the son of Joe and Mary V. Koch nee Engel. He was married to Dorothy Vogt Koch nee Ruby. Mr. Koch is survived by his son Steven (Lorrie) Koch Jr. of Winchester; granddaughter Linley Koch; step-children Perry (Judy) Vogt of Valmeyer and Trudi (Allyn) Rohlfing of Valmeyer; granddaughter Linley Koch; step-grandchildren Angie (Dale) Wiegard, Laura (David) Mortimore, Tom (Tammy) Vogt, Michael Vogt, Jim Vogt, Justin (Cody) Rohlfing, Garrett Rohlfing and Scott Rohlfing; step-great-great-grandchildren Claire Wiegard, Matt Wiegard, Katie Wiegard, Bryan Mortimore and Megan Vogt; brother Victor (Catherine) Koch of Valmeyer; sister Clementine “Sis” Floerke of Waterloo; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Raymond Koch. Visitation and funeral services were at Quernheim Funeral Home, Fr. Jose Jacob officiating. He is buried at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Madonnaville. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Lois I. Rehg nee Bayless, 90, of Columbia, died July 16, 2006, in Plainfield. She was born Aug. 26, 1915, in Grand Chain, the daughter of the late Rollie and Cecilia Bayless nee Weece. She was married to the late Elmer O. Rehg; he preceded her in death in 1981. Mrs. Rehg is survived by her daughter Phyllis (Joe) Banas of Plainfield; step-grandchildren Michael (Natalie) Banas of Lombard and Jennifer (Phil) Resendiz of Oak Ridge, N.J.; five step-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Russell Bayless and a brother in infancy. Mrs. Rehg attended St. Paul United Church of Christ in Columbia. She was a retired elementary school teacher with the Columbia School District. She was an avid card player, and a member of Columbia Senior Citizens and the Monroe County Farm Bureau. Visitation and funeral services were at Lawlor Funeral Home, Pastor Gerry Proctor officiating. She is buried at Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ in Columbia.

Harold W. “Mick” Pieper, 86, of Waterloo, died July 17, 2006, in Waterloo. He was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Columbia, the son of the late Christ and Mamie Pieper nee Riechmann. He was married to Dorothy M. Pieper nee Luhr for 62 years. Mr. Pieper is survived by his wife; sons Dennis Pieper of Columbia and Gary Pieper of Waterloo; step-granddaughter Marla (Robbie) Walters; step-great-grandchildren Jacob Hill and Hannah Walters; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Marilyn Luhr, Marion Pieper and Earl Hoffmann; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law Joan Pieper and brother Walter Pieper. Mr. Pieper was a member of Zoar United Church of Christ in New Hanover, where he was a member of the Brotherhood and the Cemetery Board. He was director of First National and Magna Bank in Columbia for 35 years, owned Luhr Feed Company for 25 years, was a member of Monroe County Farm Bureau, Monroe County Polled Hereford Association, American Legion Post #581 for 61 years and was a former Monroe County Commissioner. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a graduate of officer candidate school. He was also a member of the Mon-Clair Baseball Hall of Fame. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral services were at Zoar United Church of Christ in New Hanover, Pastor Dawson Miller officiating. He is buried at New Hanover Cemetery of Zoar in New Hanover. Memorials may be made to the New Hanover Cemetery of Zoar or Zoar United Church of Christ in New Hanover.

David M. Thorne Sr., 63, of Dupo, died July 17, 2006, in Dupo. He was born March 29, 1943, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., the son of the late George W. and Alice Jane Thorne nee Bass. He was married to Jane Thorne nee Francis. Mr. Thorne is survived by his wife; daughter Kim (Michael) Pace of Millstadt; sons Gary Edwards of Dupo and David (Jennifer) Thorne Jr. of Dupo; grandchildren Carrie Lindsay and Dorian Thorne; great-grandchildren Dylan Lindsay; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Tommy Thorne and Charles Thorne, and sisters Mable Brower and Barbara Young. Mr. Thorne was a retired conductor from the Union Pacific Railroad, with 37 years of service. He was a member of the United Transportation Union #1402 and was also a driver for Renzenberger. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1967. Visitation was at Dashner Funeral Home. A private family graveside service was held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Memorials may be made to First Congregation Church in Dupo.

Izora Grace “Dolly” Kleinschmidt nee Rujawitz, 84, of Millstadt, died July 21, 2006. She was born May 23, 1921, the daughter of the late John and Mary Rujawitz nee Wild. She was married to the late Milton Walter Kleinschmidt. Mrs. Kleinschmidt is survived by her children Gary (Ann) Kleinschmidt of Millstadt and Sharon K. (Robert) Skaer of Millstadt; grandchildren Doc (Michelle) Kleinschmidt, Tyler Kleinschmidt and Angie K. Skaer; great-granddaughter Ashley K. Skaer; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings Ruth Lewis, Hazen Lanxon, Arnold Rujawitz, Muerille Rujawitz, Donald Rujawitz, Samuel Rujawitz, John Rujawitz, Julius Rujawitz, Gilford Rujawitz and Raymond Rujawitz. Mrs. Kleinschmidt was a member of Christ United Church of Christ in Dupo. She retired after 20 years as a store manager for J.C. Penney Co. Inc. Visitation and funeral services were at Strauss Funeral Home in Millstadt. She is buried at Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Millstadt.

Yvonne M. Gass nee Dunlap, 46, of Hecker, died July 24, 2006, near Hecker. She was born Sept. 15, 1959, in Evansville, Ind., the daughter of George D. (Vera Parker) Dunlap of Waterloo and Helen Louise (William) Faulkner of St. Peters, Mo. She was married to Steven P. Gass. Mrs. Gass is survived by her parents; husband; daughters Jennifer (Adam) Voelker of Ellis Grove and Rebecka Posey of Hecker; step-children Stephanie Gass, Cody Gass and Mariah Gass; granddaughters Reagan Posey and Kennedy Voelker; sister Linda (Phillip) Cox of Troy, Mo.; brothers George W. (Mary) Dunlap of Waterloo and Steve (Gail) Dunlap of New Baden; mother-in-law Marie Gass of Smithton; sister-in-law Sandy Gass of Waterloo; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother John Dunlap. Mrs. Gass was employed as a registered nurse at the Epilepsy Foundation of Southwestern Illinois. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral services were at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Floraville, Pastor Matt Friz officiating. She is buried at St. Paul Cemetery in Floraville.
