Mary Ann Corine Schmidt nee Juengling, 83, of Chattanooga, Tenn., formerly of Tooele, Utah, Phoenix, Ariz., and Columbia, died April 13, 2006. She was born July 28, 1922, the daughter of the late Gustav and Mary Juengling nee Erke. She was married to the late Frank Schmidt. Mrs. Schmidt is survived by her children Stephen (Karen) Schmidt and Allan (Cynthia) Schmidt; granddaughters Sara Giali and Susan Schmidt; great-granddaughters Kaitlyn Giali and Madilyn Giali; and sister Elizabeth Downs. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings Emil Juengling, Caroline Schmidt, Ardell Kresyman, Arthur Juengling and Bernard Juengling. Mrs. Schmidt was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Columbia for more than 40 years. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1940, was a longtime employee of Weilbacher’s Department Store and worked for the Columbia American Distillery Company. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary #581 and was a active member of TOPS. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral mass was at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Waterloo, Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. She is buried at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to the National Arthritis Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Elmer C. Schatte, 81, of Maeystown, died April 14, 2006, in Waterloo. He was born Dec. 28, 1924, in Maeystown, the son of the late Herman H. and Kathrina Schatte nee Schlemmer. He is survived by cousins. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Maeystown. He was a member of the Waterloo American Legion and was a lifetime member of the Maeystown Sportsman Club. Visitation and funeral services were at Quernheim Funeral Home, Pastor Ivan Horn officiating. He is buried at St. John Cemetery in Maeystown. Memorials may be made to St. John United Church of Christ in Maeystown.

Edna Mae Page nee Esker, 58, of Monroe County, died April 15, 2006, in St. Louis. She was born Nov. 29, 1947, in St. Louis, the daughter of Evelyn Esker of Fults and the late Everett Esker. Mrs. Esker is survived by her mother; daughter Brenda Marquardt; grandson David Link; granddaughters Crystal Haynes and Amanda Haynes; great-grandson Brendan Haynes; and brothers Edwin Esker of Fults, Edwin (Linda) esker of Maeystown, Elvis (Cathy) Esker of Renault, Erdmann (Carol) Esker of Granville, and Eugene (Gisela) Esker of Prairie du Rocher. Mrs. Page was preceded in death by her father; and brothers Edward Esker and Paul Esker. Visitation and funeral services were at Quernheim Funeral Home, Pastor Matt Friz officiating. She is buried at St. John Cemetery in Fults.

Norma A. Zimmer nee Roever, 89, died on Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Meadowbrook Health Center in Urbana. She was born Nov. 4, 1916, the daughter of the late Charles and Olga Roever nee Kaemper. She married the late Rolly Zimmer in 1940; he preceded her in death in 2002. Mrs. Zimmer is survived by her son Ron Zimmer of Champaign; daughter Carol Scharlau of Urbana; grandsons Rob Scharlau of Fort Myers, Fla., and Edwin Scharlau of Miami Beach, Fla.; great-grandson Ryan Scharlau of Fort Myers, Fla.; and sister Lettie Noelke of Waterloo. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and two stepsisters. Mrs. Zimmer taught third grade in the Waterloo School District, taught kindergarten at Leal School in Urbana for 26 years, and later taught in the early childhood program at Parkland College in Champaign. A memorial service was held at Clark-Lindsey Village in Urbana.

Frieda Emma Schultheis nee Dinter, 82, of Valmeyer, died April 18, 2006, in Waterloo. She was born Nov. 4, 1923, in Germany, the daughter of the late Joseph Herman and Emma Maria Dinter nee Heinelt. She is survived by her daughter Monika (Larry) Shaw of Waterloo; grandchildren John (Rhonda) Esker of Cedar Hill, Mo., Donna (John) Jetton of Waterloo, Debbie Lawrence of Waterloo, and Penny (Sheldon) Burmester of Columbia; great-grandchildren Kyle, Joshua, Erica, Hillary, Sarah, John III and Jessica; great-great-granddaughter Meckenzie; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation and funeral services were at Quernheim Funeral Home, Pastor John Lukomski. She is buried at St. John Cemetery in Fults. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in New Athens of St. John Cemetery in Fults.

Roma M. Wilson nee Hester, 90, of Waterloo, died April 21, 2006, in Waterloo. She was born April 27, 1916, in Forest City, Kan., the daughter of the late John and Dessa Hester nee Drury. She was married to the late John Wilson. Mrs. Wilson is survived by her daughter Dessa (Ray) Plack of Bridgeton, Mo.; son John A. Wilson of Waterloo; grandchildren Andy, Karen, Johnny, Mary Anne and Michael; great-grandchildren Jason, Kevin, Heidi and Michael; and brothers Russell Hester of Australia and J.R. Hester of Springfield, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Riley Hester. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Rainbow DeMolay in St. Louis, and the St. Louis Metro African Violet Society. Visitation and funeral services were at DeFabio Funeral Home in Waterloo, Richard Chandler officiating. Memorials may be made to Grand Oak Hill Community Corporation.

Nancy J. Daugherty nee Lasley, 68, of Lubbock, Tex., died April 22, 2006, in Lubbock, Tex. She was born July 30, 1937, in Marshall, Mo., the daughter of the late Charles Dewey and Bertina Marie Lasley nee Hinton. She married Gayland Daugherty in 1961. Mrs. Daugherty is survived by her children Brian (Cindy) Daugherty of San Antonio, Tex., Craig (Stacey) Daugherty of Lubbock, Tex., and Tara (Louie) Hilliard of Lubbock, Tex.; step-grandchildren Randy Seward and Mallori McGregor; sister Cynthia (George) Ziegler of Waterloo; sisters-in-law Beulah Lasley of Big Rapids, Mich., and Marcy Lasley of California; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Donald Lasley and Billy Lasley. Mrs. Lasley’s parents died when she was young and she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Howard and Lucille Stansell of Waterloo. She graduated from Waterloo High School in 1955. She worked for Boatman’s Bank in St. Louis and in the late 1950s relocated to Albuquerque, N.M. She and her husband were transferred to Japan and Cocoa Beach, Fla., with the Air Force, and eventually settled in Texas. Mrs. Daugherty lived in Austin, Dallas, San Antonia and Lubbock. Memorial services were held at Live Oak Community Church in Lubbock, Tex., Rev. Chuck Williams officiating. Memorials may be made to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas.

Mary E. Gant nee Dinan, 85, of Waterloo, died April 24, 2006, in St. Louis. She was born March 6, 1921, in Ames, the daughter of the late Ferd and Leora Dinan nee Sinclair. She was married to the late Arline M. Gant. Mrs. Gant is survived by her children James (Claudia) Gant of Hilton Head, S.C., Robert (Pam) Gant of Charlotte, N.C., Lori (Glenn) Reams of Waterloo, Rita Bachelier (John Fries) of Waterloo, and Lawrence (Noreen) Gant of Creve Coeur, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister Dorothy (Arthur) Halfar of Teutopolis; and brother Lee (Gladys) Dinan of St. Louis. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers William Dinan and Gilbert Dinan, and granddaughter Sarah Reams. Mrs. Gant was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral mass was at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Waterloo, Msgr. Thomas Flach officiating. She is buried at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Build for the Future at Ss. Peter and Paul School.

Berniece C. Wiele nee Eggert, died in April 25, 2006. She was married to Warren Wiele. She is survived by her children Richard Knierim and Celeste Knierim; grandchildren Tara Knierim and Karl Knierim; and sister-in-law Marigold (Robert) Allen. She was a special grandma to Idgie, Sky, Abby and Red. Mrs. Wiele was a secretary with the St. Louis Public School District. She was a member of Victory Temple #96 Auxiliary of Knights of Pythius and past president of AARP Crestwood Chapter #2913. She was an animal lover, past member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ’s Choir, soprano soloist, pianist and wedding cake baker and decorator. Visitation and funeral services were at Kutis Funeral Home in St. Louis. She is interred at Valhalla Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, St. Peters United Church of Christ Building Fund or Open Door Animal Sanctuary.

Douglas Eugene Massie, 64, died April 26, 2006, in Peoria. He was born October 12, 1941, in Bush, the son of the late Eugene and Nellie Massie nee Halleran. He married Katie Massie nee Terrell in 1965. Mr. Massie is survived by his wife; daughters Melissa (Chris) Ludwig of Ooltewah, Tenn., and Dawn (Rick) Pirtle of Decatur; grandchildren Eric Brandon Massie, Melissa Jane Williams, Kristen Ludwig and Tyson Ludwig; sisters Brenda (Edward) Kempen of Valmeyer, Cynthia (John) Love of Columbia, Jeanne (Mark) Wagner of East Carondelet and Kathy (Bill) Brooks of East Carondelet; and brothers Maurice (Nancy) Massie of Jefferson City, Mo., Stephen (Kathy) Massie of East Carondelet, Ricky (Mary) Massie of East Carondelet, Randall Massie of East Carondelet, and Roger (Cathy) Massie of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Michael Todd Williams. Mr. Massie was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Memorial services were at Fist Baptist Church of Columbia, Lyle Witcher officiating. He is buried at Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Columbia.
