Dennis A. Jaenke, 62, of Waterloo, died January 17, 2006, in Belleville. He was born December 17, 1943, in Red Bud, the son of Dorothy Jaenke nee Kopp and the late Clarence F. Jaenke. He was married to Florence Jaenke nee Rippelmeyer. Mr. Jaenke is survived by his mother; wife; children Lisa (Craig) Storm of Waterloo, Tricia (Van) Becker of Wilmington, and Sara (Darren) Armbrecht of Valmeyer; grandchildren Lindsay Storm, Kaitlyn Storm and Haley Storm; brothers Ronald (Shirley) Jaenke of Red Bud, and Robert (Nancy) Jaenke of Waterloo; and sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, an aunt, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. Jaenke was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Floraville. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral services were at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Pastor Matt Friz officiating. He is buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Cancer Treatment Centers of America or St. Paul United Church of Christ of Floraville.

Jane Kistner nee Clover, 81, of Columbia, died January 20, 2006, in Columbia. She was born February 12, 1924, in Ottawa, Kan., the daughter of the late Fred and Suzanne Clover nee Michael. She was married to the late Kenneth Kistner; he preceded her in death in 1992. Mrs. Kistner is survived by her daughter Alice Kistner of Columbia; grandchildren Derick Flanders and Kenneth Freeman; brother Robert Thompson of Belleville; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Allene Calloway. Mrs. Kistner served in Women’s Army Corps in World War II. Private services were held. She is buried at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Monroe County Humane Society.

Edward V. Smugala, 72, of Columbia, died January 20, 3006, in St. Louis. He was born June 11, 1933, in Nashville, the son of the late Vincent and Clara Smugala nee Grzeskiewcz. He married Mary L. Smugala nee Gill in 1956; she survives him. Mr. Smugala is survived by his wife; children Thomas (Shari) Smugala of Columbia, Daren (Bobby) Prinster of St. Louis, and Julie Smugala of Columbia; grandchildren Ashley, Aynsley, Samantha, Nicole, Dallas, Anna, Jordan, Bobby and Brooke; sister Marcella (Charles) Jurkowshi of Arnold, Mo.,; brothers Eugene (Frances) Smugala of St. Louis, and Vincent Smugala of St. Louis; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers Theodore, Lawrence, Anthony and Walter, and sister Stella in infancy. Mr. Smugala was a Eucharistic minister and Immaculate Conception Church in Columbia. He was a member of Knights of Columbia #6165 – 4th Degree; past Grand Knight of Cahokia Council #4596; past Faithful Navigator of Leo Jerome Assembly #1666, Knights of Columbus Former District Deputy, and past Eucharistic Minister at St. Anthony’s Medical Center. He was a member of Columbia Senior Citizens, American Legion Post #581, and a nursing home volunteer. He was a retired cabinet maker with Bank Building and Equipment, and Loughman Cabinet Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. A funeral mass was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. He is buried at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, Immaculate Conception School Education Fund, or in the form of masses.

Steven R. Chunn, 50, of Belleville, died January 22, 2006, in Belleville. He was born October 1, 1955, in Carmi, the son of Robert and Claudene Chunn nee Simpson of Evansville. He married Jayne Berroth in 1999. Mr. Chunn is survived by his parents; wife; siblings Richard (Special Friend Susan) Chunn of Homestead, Fla., Carol (Richard) Couch of Santa Fe, N.M., Tina (Jay) Erickson of Gig Harbor, Wash., Ronald (Melanie) Chunn of St. Louis, and Kris (John) Budnicki of Fairview Heights; mother- and father-in-law Joe and Elouise Berroth of Maple Hill, Kan.; brothers- and sisters-in-law Jennifer Berroth of Topeka, Kan., Jeannette (Tony) Proctor of Topeka, Kan., Janice Core of Emmett, Kan., Jacque Watt of Topeka, Kan., Jerry (Kristi) Berroth of Topeka, Kan., Jeff Berroth of Topeka, Kan., and Jannelle (Todd) Hepworth of Topeka, Kan.; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his infant son Steeli, nephew Sammy Chunn, brother-in-law Joseph Berroth, and grandparents Claude and Rosa Simpson and Jess and Della Chunn. Mr. Chunn attended St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Fairview Heights. He worked as a restaurant manager. Visitation was at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home. A funeral mass was at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ruma, Fr. Ralph Renner officiating. He is buried at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Ruma.

Betty Grace Bassy nee Harres, 75, of Columbia, died January 24, 2006, in Belleville. She was born December 1, 1930, in Belleville, the daughter of the late Albert and Hilda Harres nee Stefen. She was married to the late Emilia Bassy; he preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Bassy is survived by her son Joseph Bassy of Columbia; brother Hilbert (Carole) Harres of Columbia; nephew Jack (Gwendolyn) Harres of Columbia; nieces Donna (David) Lang of Waterloo, Betty Jean (Allen) Balicki of Feeding Hills, Mass., and Eva Marie (Steven) Sojkowski of Feeding Hills, Mass.; and sister-in-law Eva Phaneuf of Agawam, Mass. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Mrs. Bassy was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, where she was active with the Evening Women’s League and volunteered as a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of Columbia Sister Cities. She retired as a secretary from the City of Columbia and WCBW radio station. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral services were at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. She is buried at Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ in Columbia.

Mary “Mayme” V. Lorentzen nee Schranz, 92, of Columbia, died January 25, 2006, in Columbia. She was born January 2, 1914, in Centreville, the daughter of the late Peter and Mathilda Schranz nee Jerome. She married the late John Lorentzen in 1935; he preceded her in death. Mrs. Lorentzen is survived by her son John P. (Eleanor) Lorentzen of Sturgeon, Mo.; daughter Margaret Ann (Keith) Pickett of Columbia; grandchildren Catherine Ann Tomlin, John P. Lorentzen III, Sharon Ann Stallings, Robert Eugene Lorentzen, Michael Eugene Lorentzen, Gelene Marie Lorentzen, Adam Kristopher Pickett and Kyle Marc Pickett; great-grandchildren Michelle Leann Tomlin, Zachary Nathaniel Lorentzen, Jacob Gene Lorentzen, Johanna Kay Lorentzen, Joseph Alexander Lorentzen, Tanner Colyn Stallings, Sarah Ann Stallings, Matthew Eugene Lorentzen, Lauren Nicole Lorentzen and Michael Eugene Lorentzen Jr.; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Robert E. (Mary Agnes) Lorentzen; daughter Mary Ann Lorentzen; grandchildren Loren Joseph Lorentzen, Mary Ann Lorentzen, John Mark Lorentzen and Margaret Mary Lorentzen; and siblings Albert, Joseph, Frank, Steve, Mildred, Clarence, Peter, Julius and Ernest Schranz. Mrs. Lorentzen was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she was active with Altar Sodality. She was a member of Columbia Senior Citizens, St. Clair County Farm Bureau and the Columbia Woman’s Club. She was an avid bowler. A funeral mass was at Immaculate Conception Church, Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. She is buried at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery in Belleville. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Gibault Catholic High School Library Fund.

Vernon Nicholson, 85, of Ames, died January 26, 2006, in Ames. He was born November 15, 2006, in Prairie du Rocher, the son of the late John and Blanche Nicholson nee Lackey. He married Melba DuFrenne on 1943; she survives him. Mr. Nicholson is survived by his wife; daughters Sharon (Wayne) Behnken of Ames, and Nadine (Alfred) Keckritz of Red Bud; grandsons Shawn Behnken, Joel Behnken, Nick Behnken and Christopher Behnken; great-grandchildren Amanda Behnken and Michael Behnken; and many nieces, nephews and countless lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son Vernon Nicholson Jr., daughter Joyce Annette Nicholson, and brothers David Glenn Nicholson and Lloyd Nicholson. Mr. Nicholson was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Red Bud. He was a Sunday school teacher for 15 years, and he and his wife were youth fellowship advisory for many years. He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge and past worthy patron of Eastern Star. He was an avid bowler, a Red Cross lifeguard, an enthusiastic photographer and played bingo at least three times a week with his wife. He loved to travel and toured a great deal of the United States on his motorcycle with his wife on the seat behind him. Visitation was at St. Peter United Church of Christ in Red Bud. Funeral services were at St. Peter United Church of Christ in Red Bud, Rev. William Graves officiating. He is buried at St. Marcus Cemetery in Red Bud. Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Foundation.

Patricia A. Holman nee Dyke, 71, of Columbia, died January 26, 2006, in St. Louis. She was born October 19, 1934, in Watson, Mo., the daughter of the late Richard and Frances Dyke nee Harmon. She married the late Leonard W. Holman in 1953; he preceded her in death in 1994. Mrs. Holman is survived by her daughters Christine (John) Simmons of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Jackqueline Holman of Columbia; son Leonard W. (Jody) Holman of Columbia; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers Richard Dyke and Donald Dyke. Mrs. Holman attended Bethany United Methodist Church in Columbia. She had worked at a marine cook with Luhr Brothers Inc. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star in Cape Girardeau and American Legion Auxiliary Post #502 in Millstadt. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral services were at Bethany United Methodist Church, Pastor Ron Chase. A graveside service was held at Hobbs Chapel at United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Memorials may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church Building Fund or Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Florence M. Glessner, 82, of Waterloo, died January 27, 2006, in St. Louis. She was born October 29, 1923, in Waterloo, the daughter of the late William and Josephine Glessner nee Brueggemann. Mrs. Glessner is survived by her son Ronnie Glessner of Waterloo; grandchildren Amy Crook, Stacey Marie Glessner, and Joshua R. Glessner; great-granddaughter Brittney D. Crook; and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Millie Pardie. Mrs. Glessner was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral mass was at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Msgr. Thomas Flach officiating. She is buried at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Waterloo.

Ronald P. Brand, 56, of Millstadt, died January 27, 2006, in Belleville. He was born November 16, 1949, in St. Louis, the son of the late Ralph and Helen Brand nee Schutzius. Mr. Brand is survived by his daughters Tamara (Douglas) Conner of Columbia, and Jessica Brand of Arnold; grandsons Kyle Conner and Dylan Conner; sister Cecelia Davis of St. Peter, Mo.; and brothers Leroy Brand of St. Peter, Mo., and Ralph Brand of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Brand attended First Baptist Church of Waterloo. He worked in the tool and dye department at The Boeing Company in St. Louis. He was a member of the Mason’s Lodge #474 in Columbia, and I.A.M. – A.W. Lodge #837 in Hazelwood, Mo. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. Visitation and funeral services were at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud, Dr. Dennis Jones officiating. He is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
