Carl J. Huch, 97, of Columbia, died Sept. 1, 2013, in Waterloo. He was born May 13, 1916, in Columbia, the son of the late Jacob and Minnie (nee Stumpf) Huch. Mr. Huch is survived by his children Paul (Shirley) Huch and Janet (Dennis) Rippelmeyer; grandchildren Mike Huch and Jenna (Jeremy) Heinlein; great-grandchildren Macy Ann Heinlein and Addison Marie Heinlein; and special friend, Viola Sinn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie (nee Kraft) Huch; a sister, Elberta Korves; and a brother, Ernst Huch. Mr. Huch attended St. Paul UCC of Columbia where he was active with the consistory. He was a member of the Monroe County Farm Bureau (board member), Monroe County HIA (board member), Columbia Gymnastic Association, played in a polka band and was a 35-year member of the Waterloo Municipal. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Paul UCC in Columbia with Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. Mr. Huch was buried at the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery. Henry Edwin Spier, 58, of Belleville, died Sept. 2, 2013 at Barnes Jewish Medical Center. He was born Sept. 21, 1954 in East St Louis, the son of the late Charles and Cleta (nee Miller) Spier. Mr. Spier is survived by a brother, Lawrence (Virginia) Spier of Columbia; sister-in-law, Charlene Spier of Dupo; and dear friend, Sandy of Belleville; along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers William “Bill”, Howard and Robert Spier. Mr. Spier was an operator at Cerro Copper in Sauget, and had been a volunteer with the Dupo EMS. There were no public services. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Melvin Walter Veit, 82, of Millstadt, died Sept. 3, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville, with his family by his side. He was born May 5, 1931, in Millstadt, the son of the late Alvin and Ella (nee Gruenewald) Veit. Mr. Veit is survived by his children and caregivers, Ricky and Chris Veit, Sharon and Rick Cromwell and Randy and Linda Veit; grandchildren Michelle, Megan and Andrew Veit and Coleman Cromwell; sisters and brothers-in-law, Esther and Herman Koldehoff, Norman and LaVerne Van Buren and Harvey Van Buren; best friends Leslie Stumpf and Shirley Mueller; and his beloved dogs, especially Roxy. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Florence (nee Van Buren) Veit; a brother, Earl Veit; in-laws John and Frieda (nee Wolf) Van Buren; and sisters-in-law Hilda Veit and Helen Van Buren. Mr. Veit lifetime Millstadt resident and farmer. He dearly loved his family and his farm life. Melvin attended Zion Evangelical Church in Millstadt and was a member of the St. Clair County Farm Bureau and Sister Cities Porta Westfalica. Visitation is Friday, Sept. 6, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt. Funeral is Saturday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m., at Zion Evangelical Church in Millstadt with Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Mr. Veit will be buried at Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Millstadt.
Vernon W. Jacobs, 87, of Waterloo, died Aug. 31, 2013, in Red Bud. He was born May 4, 1926, in Fults, the son of the late Henry and Wilhelmine (nee Kaestner) Jacobs. Mr. Jacobs is survived by his wife, Alvera (nee Dehne) Jacobs; his sons Allen (Pam) Jacobs and David Jacobs; brothers Henry (Darlene) Jacobs and Melvin (Pat) Jacobs; and a sister-in-law, Delores Rubemeyer; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brothers Otto and Wilmer Jacobs; and sisters Nelda Jacobs and Esther Johanning. Mr. Jacobs attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He was a member of the Waterloo Senior Center, Renault American Legion Post 1215, Beaver Lake Association and a former member of the Waterloo Sportsman Club. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at Immaculate Conception Church in Waterloo with Pastor Tony Troup and Pastor Matt Clark officiating. Mr. Jacobs was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery. Alvin L. Borcharding, 85, of Columbia, died Aug. 31, 2013, in Red Bud. He was born Jan. 27, 1928 in Maeystown, the son of the late Henry and Wilhelmina (nee Juelfs) Borcharding. Mrs. Borcharding is survived by his wife, Arlou (nee Janson) Borcharding; a son, Tom Borcharding; grandson Jon Borcharding; and a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Borcharding; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Borcharding; sisters Marie (Alfred) Heusohn, Ardel (John) Durrer and Nelda (William) Smith; and brothers Armin (Leta) Borcharding, Henry (Laurine) Borcharding and Alfred (Erma) Borcharding. Mr. Borcharding attended St. Paul UCC in Columbia. He was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and the Allied Craftworkers Local 30. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. Mr. Borcharding will be buried at the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia.
Dylan Anthony Range, 17, of Dupo, died Aug. 17, 2013, at his residence. He was born Feb. 3, 1996, in Red Bud, the son of Mark and Deanna Range. Besides his parents, Dylan is survived by his sisters, Denise Range and Danielle Range; his niece, Sophia; and a nephew, Tanner; along with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edward and Dolores Mosbacher; an uncle, Bruce “Moose” Mosbacher; a great-grandfather, Tony Range; and his great-grandmother, Margie Range. Dylan was a senior at Dupo High School and a member of the AFROTC Competition Drill Team and Saber Team. His rank was Cadet Major and his position was Operations Commander in the AFROTC. He lettered twice in the AFROTC and was awarded outstanding cadet for 2011 and 2012. Dylan received the Military Order of the World Wars Award, National Sojourner’s Award and Superior Performance Award. He was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors. Visitation was at First Baptist Church in Dupo. A funeral followed with Rev. Roger Reid officiating.
Cynthia S. Kinney, nee Lynch, 64, of Pinckneyville, died Aug. 14, 2013, at her residence. She was born Jan. 18, 1949 in DuQuoin, the daughter of Winona (nee Kellerman) Hampleman and the late Weaver Lynch. Mrs. Kinney married Myron Kinney in 1970. In addition to her mother and her husband, Mrs. Kinney is survived by her children, Noel (Heather) Kinney of Columbus, Ind., Nathan (Bethany) Kinney of Red Bud, Meileigh (James) Brubaker of Belleville and Ron Hughes, Jr. of Red Bud (who was like a third son); step-father, Claude Hampleman of Pinckneyville; grandchildren, Celby Kinney, Colt Kinney, Mason Kinney, Eva Kinney, Alexis Brubaker, Ryker Brubaker and Piper Brubaker; a brother, Dane Lynch of Pinckneyville; sisters, Randy Jo (Jerry) McCoy and Dawn Muller of Council Grove, Kan., and Sharon (James) Corbett of Highland (who was like a third sister); her children, Ron Hughes Jr., and Holly (Todd) Smith; and special friend, Don Collins; along with aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Winnie and Oma Kellerman, Belle McClurken and Dores Lynch; and an uncle and an aunt, Dalph and Lee McClurken. Cynthia had been a baby sitter, a school teacher, was in the concrete yard ornament business and also worked at Sports Page Inn. She was of the Baptist faith. Cynthia attended Union University in Jackson, Ten., and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1986 at SIUE. She enjoyed machine and hand embroidery, gardening, raising flowers and spending time with her family. Visitation and funeral were at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Pinckneyville with Rev. Rob Mathis officiating. Mrs. Kinney was buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Pinckneyville. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Florence L. Greenlee, nee Wharton, 99, Columbia, died Aug. 17, 2013, in Columbia. She was born May 26, 1914, in Farnam, Neb., daughter of the late William and Hannah (nee Amstutz) Wharton. She married Frank M. Greenlee in 1935 in Denver, Colo. He died in 1976. Mrs. Greenlee is survived by her daughter, Sue (Don) Barlow of Columbia; a granddaughter, Stacy (Tim) McKenzie of St. Louis; and great-granddaughters, Sara and Kelly Carr of Columbia. In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Naomi Farris, Helen Wharton, Bessie Vig and Martha Black; and a brother, Harold Wharton. Florence attended high school in Farnam, Neb., and then graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She then taught school for several years in the Sandhills of Nebraska and near Farnam, Neb. After marrying Frank M. Greenlee of Moorefield, Neb., she moved to Waterloo, Iowa and to Jesup, Iowa in 1948. She taught piano for many years in Jesup and later was secretary to the superintendent of the Jesup Public School until 1979, at which time she retired. Mrs. Greenlee attended First United Methodist Church in Jesup, Iowa, where she was the organist and active in the Even Dozen Study Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. Florence also loved nature, horseback riding, knitting, sewing and taking care of her kitties. Since September of 2000, she lived near her family in Columbia, where she continued her music ministry at Bethany United Methodist Church. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral was at Bethany United Methodist Church in Columbia. A second wake and funeral were held in her hometown in Iowa. Mrs. Greenlee was buried at Cedar Crest Cemetery in Buchanan County, Iowa. Louis J. Schneider, 89, of Columbia, died Aug. 16, 2013, at Garden Place of Columbia. He was born Sept. 24, 1923, in Columbia, the son of the late Louis and Emilie (nee Stoll) Schneider. Mr. Schneider is survived by nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Irene Thompson. Mr. Schneider served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Louis married Marcella (nee Bergmann) Schneider in 1957 in Columbia. She died in 2005. Mr. Schneider had been employed as a foreman at Columbia Quarry. He was a member of the Columbia American Legion Post 581 and the Columbia Senior Citizens. He was also an avid coin collector and photographer. Visitation and funeral were at Lawlor Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. Mr. Schneider was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the Columbia American Legion Post 581 or to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
James Russell Walster, 75, of Smithton, died Aug. 24, 2013, 2013 at Park Haven Care Center. He was born, Sept. 29, 1937, in Prairie du Rocher, the son of the late Glenn and Lillian (nee Marlen) Walster. Jim married Cora (nee Aubuchon) Walster in 1994 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Litchfield. In addition to his wife, Mr. Walster is survived by his siblings, Ronald (Carol) Walster of Peoria, Glenda Vetter of Maryville, Joan (Tom) Adams of Columbia, Timothy (Shiela) Walster of Dupo and Mary (Roger) Bieber of Chicago; along with nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mr. Walster had worked at Kroger’s Grocery Store in Dupo and Ralph’s Grocery Store in Los Angeles, Calif. He retired as a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. Visitation was at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. Funeral was Wednesday, Aug. 28 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairie du Rocher with Fr. Stanley Konieczy officiating. Mr. Walster was buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Smithton.
