Gloria Morton (nee Weisenborn), 80, of Belleville, formerly of Millstadt, died March 3, 2012 at her home. She was born May 28, 1931. Mrs. Morton is survived by her children, Rachel (Donald) Reveal and Joyce (Philip) Carpenter; along with seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Morton attended St. Paul UCC of Columbia. She was a retired registered nurse, who had been employed at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville. Gloria was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star 98 - Rob Morris Chapter in Fairview Heights. A memorial service will be Friday, March 9, at 1 p.m., at the banquet room at Bully’s Smokehouse in Columbia. Arrangements were handled by Lawlor Funeral Home.
Alvin Joseph Menke, 70, of Waterloo, died March 4, 2012 in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Nov. 25, 1941 in Madonnaville, the son of the late William and Edith (nee Roberts) Menke. Mr. Menke is survived by his wife, Brenda (nee Hoffman Menke; children Nancy (Maurice) Koesterer, Bonnie (Dave) Dillenberger and Pam (Mike) Lloyd; grandchildren Lyndsay and Kati Koesterer; Chelsy and Derek Joseph “D.J.” Dillenberger, and Erika and Aaron Lloyd; siblings Jim (Anita) Menke, Joyce Kettler and Marvin (Cara) Menke; a sister-in-law, Betty Baker; and his dog, Dasher; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Menke attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He was the former co-owner (with Eddie Stanglein) of Waterloo Auto Parts. Al loved the outdoors and was known as a handyman. In his recent retirement, he enjoyed spending time between his home in Waterloo and a place in Osage Beach, Mo. Visitation is Tuesday, March 6, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. William J. Sander, 93, of Columbia, died March 4, 2012, at Columbia Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born May 28, 1918, in Columbia, the son of the late William and Josephine (nee Weilbacher) Sander. Mr. Sander is survived by his wife, Marge (nee Forthaus) Sander; children JoAnn Sander of Columbia, Joe (Debbie) Sander ofColumbia, Mary (Michael) Horn of Oakville, Mo., and Mike (Betsy) Sander of Columbia; grandchildren Jessica and Jon (Amanda) Sander and Kate and Leah Horn; great-grandchild, Emmalyn; brother, Leo (Evelyn) Sander of Columbia; and a sister, Lillian (Chester) Kopec of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Viola (nee Hankammer) Sander; and sisters, Marcella (Armin) Heiken, and Frieda Sander. Mr. Sander served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was retired as the deputy regional manager for the Illinois Department of Labor. Bill was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Columbia’s Holy Name Society, a fourth degree Knights of Columbus of Council 6165, the Illinois Department of the Aging Area chair for St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Bond and Randolph Counties, a past-president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a parts buyer for Sander Auto Electric, president of the St. Louis Glennon Guild and was on the City of Columbia’s Sign Ordinance Committee, and also the Planning Commission.
Mr. Sander was also very active with the Columbia American Legion Post 581. He was a past commander for the post and also District 22. Funeral is Thursday, March 8, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia with Father Carl Scherrer officiating. Mr. Sander will be buried at the church’s cemetery. Orville Fred Koerber, 87, of Freeburg, formerly of Millstadt, died March 5, 2012 at Freeburg Care Center. He was born Nov. 27,1924 in Floraville, the son of the late Oscar and Eliza (nee Kempf) Koerber. Mr. Koerber is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marie (nee Franke) Koerber; sons Larry (Betty) Koerber of Henderson, Ky., and Stan (Kay) Koerber of Freeburg; grandchildren Denise McGraw, Deena Beck, Diana Trapper, Tanya Smith and Todd Koerber; great-grandchildren Skylar, Trey, Payton, Paxton, Molly, Cayden, Owen, Wyatt, Nora, Audra, Ryne and Wendy; step-grandchildren Kim Roberts and Bart Roberts; step-great-grandchildren Katie, Rebecca, Hannah and Luke; step-step-great-grandchild, Landon; sister-in-law, Verida Franke; and brother-in-law, Wilber (Leona) Franke; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by brother-in-law, Leroy Franke. Orville farmed for 35 years before his retirement. He was employed for 29 years at First National Bank of Millstadt where served as a vice-president and board member. Orville also served the Millstadt community as the township auditor and clerk. Mr. Koerber attended St. Paul UCC in Floraville. He was a member of the Floraville Community Grange and Modern Woodsmen of America. Daniel F. Krack, 77, of Waterloo, died March 6, 2012 in St. Louis. He was born Aug. 2, 1934, in Dupo, the son of the late Herman and Nora Belle (nee Smith) Krack. Mr. Krack is survived by his children, Jeffrey (Joseline) Krack, Daniel S. (Jane) Krack and Lisa Krack; grandchildren, Matthew and Timothy Krack, Bennett and Tucker Krack and Brody Schnaare; sisters, Annabelle Ramey and Naomi Hancock. Mr. Krack was preceded in death by sisters, Cecelia Bean and Viola Turner; and brothers Herman and Norman Krack. Mr. Krack was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Nicole A. Huebner, nee Baillard, 70, of Waterloo, died March 6, 2012 in St. Louis, Mo. She was born April 10, 1941 in Epernay, France, the daughter of the late Andre Baillard and Madeleine (nee Boye) Lamblot. Mrs. Huebner is survived by her son, Pat (Lisa) Huebner; sister, Michelle Baillard; daughter, Lynn (LeRoy) Loehr; grandchildren Chris and Frances Loehr and Sheldon Hoefft; and a great-granddaughter, Delysia Loehr; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Alma V. Glenn, nee Hoock, 99, of Columbia, died March 6, 2012 in Columbia. She was born Sept. 23, 1912, in Cahokia, the daughter of the late Martin Joseph and Mary Caroline (nee Kempfe) Hoock. Mrs. Glenn is survived by her grandchildren, Monte(Nancy) Foster and Pierre Foster (David Stepney); great-grandchildren Nicole Foster (fiancé Michael Morden) and Natalie (Nick) Smith; a great-great-grandson, Hunter Smith; and step-daughter, Vivian Branson; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her first husband Clifford Montine, second husband Paul Glenn; a daughter, Sylvia "Fe Fe" (nee Montine) Foster; and a great-grandson, Michael Foster; along with two sisters and two brothers. Betty L. Crook, nee Wilson, 86, died March 12, 2012 in Red Bud. She was born June 14, 1925 in College Corner, Ohio, the daughter of the late Elmore and Goldie (nee Weber) Wilson. Mrs. Crook is survived by her daughter, Stephanie (Daniel) Braun; grandchildren Timothy and Andrew Braun; a sister, Dorothea Crook; and a brother, Stanley (Fran) Wilson; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Lyle J. Crook; a son, Stephen James Crook; sisters Margaret Epp and Jean Candler; and brothers Jack and James Wilson. James John Thomas, 78, of Millstadt, died March 13, at Memorial Care Center in Belleville. He was born Oct. 3, 1933 in Quincy, the son of the late George and Katherine (nee Seifert) Thomas. Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 58 years, Charlotte (nee Burrows) Thomas; a daughter, Jana Thornton of Millstadt; sons Jeffrey Thomas of Swansea, James M. “Jay” Thomas of Belleville, Stephen Thomas of Millstadt and Allen Thomas of Belleville; grandchildren Christine Chouinard, Ian Thomas, Lucas Thomas, Ryan Thomas and Matthew Thomas; great-grandchildren Jake, Jessica, Brendon and Hailey Chouinard; and a brother, Frederick Thomas of Quincy; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He graduated from Quincy College in 1959. Mr. Thomas served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 and the Army Reserves until 1963. He graduated from Quincy College in 1959. Jim retired from the U.S. Treasury Department where was a pension and trust specialist for the IRS. He enjoyed playing poker with his friends and was involved with the Boy Scouts in Millstadt and Cahokia. Mr. Thomas was a charter member of the Cahokia Lions Club, serving as their bingo chairman and treasurer for many years. Raymond P. Griesbach, 83, of Columbia, and formerly of St. Louis, Mo., died March 17, 2012. He was born Sept. 9, 1928, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Raymond and Ruth (Brante) Griesbach. He married Louise (Beckmann) Griesbach in 1955 in St. Louis, Mo. In addition to his wife, Mr. Griesbach is survived by his sons Brent Griesbach of Columbia and Jeffrey (Beckie) Griesbach of O'Fallon, Mo.; a grandson, Geoffrey Griesbach; and a cousin, Jack (Harriet) Morrison of St. Louis, Mo. Mr. Griesbach served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Columbia American Legion Post 581. He attended Christ Community Lutheran Church in Columbia. Ray served the Columbia community on various boards and had been the city clerk in the early 1980s. In addition, Mr. Griesbach was an assistant director with the Monroe County Human Support Services and had owned and operated Columbia Motors Ford Dealership in Columbia for many years.
