Michael I. Halleran, 85, of Columbia, died April 19, 2010 at Columbia Convalescent Center. He was born March 6, 1925, in Bush, the son of the late Vernon and Lyburtie (Claunch) Halleran. He married Pearl (Mueller) Halleran in 1969 in Columbia. In addition to his wife, Mr. Halleran is survived by his granddaughters, Genea Kay (Michael) Kearns and Stephanie (David) Miller; great-granddaughters Emily and Allison Miller; sister-in-law, Leona Halleran; nephews Randy (Kandie) Halleran and Terry (Rhonda) Halleran; son-in-law, Gene Tilley; a brother-in-law, Ralph (Helen) Mueller; sister-in-law, Twila Hankammer, great-nephew, Jim; and great-nieces Julie, Jenny and Dottie. He was preceded in death by daughters Cynthia Ann Tilley and Mary Lynn Lewis; brothers Vernie and Richard Halleran; and a sister, Margie Halleran. Mr. Halleran served with the US Navy during World War II. He retired from McDonnell – Douglas of St. Louis in 1978 after more than 30 years of service. Michael was a member of St. Paul UCC of Columbia and Columbia American Legion Post 581. Visitation and funeral were at Lawlor Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. Mr. Halleran was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul UCC Building Fund.

Ralph C. W. Straub, 70, of Waterloo, formerly of Columbia, died April 19, 2010 in St. Louis from complications following a stroke a few weeks ago. He was born June 18, 1939 in Belleville, the son of the late Julius and Wilma (nee Riebeling) Straub. Mr. Straub is survived by his wife, Sharon (nee Kuntzman) Straub; children Michelle (Tom) Pfershy and Robert Straub; grandchildren Kirsten Pfershy and Caleb Straub; step-mother Thelma Straub; brothers Delbert (Sandy) Straub and Paul (Rachel) Straub; a brother-in-law, Paul (Ruth) Kuntzman; friends Ray and Jackie Aycock; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Renee Straub; and a step-brother, Roland Huch. Mr. Straub was a former Waterloo police officer and retired after 32 years of service with the City of Waterloo. He was a member of St. Paul UCC of Waterloo, the Fraternal Order of Police, a life member of the Optimist Club and a former Jaycee’s member. Ralph enjoyed his retirement by spending time with his grandchildren and at the Lake of the Ozarks with his wife and two best friends, Jackie and Ray Aycock. Visitation is Wednesday, April 21, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Thursday, April 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul UCC in Waterloo with Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein officiating. Mr. Straub will be buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to his church’s Emergency Fund, the Optimist Club or the American Diabetes Association.

Edna “Sis” Arras, nee Frank, 87, of Waterloo, died April 20, 2010 in St. Louis. She was born Oct. 5, 1922, in Merrimac, the daughter of the late Ralph Sr. and Louise (nee Naumann) Frank. Mrs. Arras is survived by her sister, Beulah Bohnemeier; sister-in-laws Leona Frank, Viola Frank, Pat Frank, Dorothy Arras and Helen Steinmann; and a brother-in –law, Warren (Lela) Arras; along with nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Arras; brothers Earl Frank, Roy Frank, Edward “Buddy” Frank, Ralph Frank Jr. and Morris Frank; and a sister, Evelyn Riebeling. Mrs. Arras was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Waterloo, a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, Waterloo American Legion Auxiliary and the Waterloo Sportsman Club. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Friday, April 23, 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein officiating. Mrs. Arras will be buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to her church or Hoyleton Children’s Home.

Patricia Ruth Knollman, nee Miller, 79 of Valmeyer, died April 22, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis. She was born Dec. 4, 1930 in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Edward and Jessie (nee Franklin) Miller. Mrs. Knollman is survived by her husband of 57 years, Charles “Chuck” Knollman Jr.; children Charles Knollman III of Belle Villa and Monica (Mark) Bauer of Saginaw, Mich., and grandchildren Heidi (Rex) Long, Courtney (Willie) Barlow, Chuck E. Knollman IV and Derek Bauer; along with great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces, great-great-nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her in-laws, Charles and Albetina Knollman Sr.; and sisters Kathryn (Roy) Koch and Liz (Fred) Gill. After attending Sacred Heart Catholic Grade School, Pat graduated from Dupo High School in 1948. She then earned a degree from Missouri Business School in 1950. Mrs. Knollman worked in the Dupo Pharmacy with her husband Chuck. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dupo and the American Legion Post 485 Ladies Auxiliary in Dupo. Visitation is Sunday, April 25, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. Funeral is Monday, April 26, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dupo with Father Paul Wienhoff officiating. Mrs. Knollman will be buried at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Columbia.

Eddie W. Phelps, 77, of Waterloo, died April 22, 2010 in Waterloo. He was born Dec, 17, 1932, in Posey County, Ind., the son of the late Chalon C. and Opal (nee Mayberry) Phelps. Mr. Phelps is survived by his wife, Shirley J. Phelps; children Steven (Tonia) Phelps and Vickie (John) Kaiser; grandchildren Erin (Kyle) Griffith, Jennifer (Matt) Eckart and Michael (Carissa) Kaiser; great-grandchildren Maci Kaiser and Lauren Eckart; a sister, Mary Ellen Otten; and brothers Ralph Lee Phelps and Tommy Ray (JoAnn) Phelps. He was preceded in death by a sister, Julia Marie Johnson; and brothers Kenneth and Perry Phelps. Mr. Phelps was retired from Chrysler, an avid hunter and fisherman and a guide for Illinois Trophy Bow Hunters. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor Matt Friz officiating. Mr. Phelps was buried at the Hecker Village Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Oak Hill’s Whispering Pines Activity Fund, the Alzheimer’s Association or Southern Illinois Hospice.

Claudia Gum, nee Smith, 72, of Waterloo, died April 22, 2010. She was born Nov. 19, 1937 in Waterloo, the daughter of the late the late William and Bernice (nee Mehrmann) Smith. Mrs. Gum is survived by her children Donald (Sharon) Gum, Cheryl (Randy) Moll, Gail (Lester) Goodman and Dennis (Lisa) Gum; grandchildren Doug (Jayne) Gum, Stephanie (Jeff) Harp, Stacie Gum, Katie Moll, Brendan Moll, Brittany Goodman and Lauren Gum; great-grandchildren Natalie, Norah, Ella and Logan; a brother, William (Louann) Smith; and sisters Jeanette (Bart) Gentsch and Donna Smith; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Gum; and a grandson, Jared Moll. Visitation is Wednesday, April 28, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Thursday, April 29, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein officiating. Mrs. Gum will be buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Marilyn L. Luhr, nee Hoffmann, 76, of Waterloo died April 23, 2010 in Waterloo. She was born March 17, 1934 in Fults, the daughter of the late Leland and Pauline (nee Rippelmeyer) Hoffmann. Mrs. Luhr is survived by her children Steven (Tina) Luhr, Brian Luhr and Nancy (Jay) Wolfmeier; grandchildren LeAnne Luhr, Conrad Wolfmeier and Kira Wolfmeier; brothers Cletus (Twyla) Hoffmann and Alvis (Patsy) Hoffmann; and a sister, Janice (Carl) Nagel; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Luhr; and a daughter-in-law, Tracey Luhr. Mrs. Luhr was a member of St. Paul UCC of Waterloo. Visitation is Monday, April 26, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Tuesday, April 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul UCC of Waterloo with Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein. Mrs. Luhr will be buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to her church or Oak Hill’s Whispering Pines.

Robert E. Maus, 75, of Waterloo, died April 23, 2010 in St. Louis, Mo. in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Oct. 1, 1934 in Renault, the son of the late Armin and Leona (nee Nottmeier) Maus. Mr. Maus is survived by his wife, Gladys E. Maus, nee Neubarth; children Roger (Lauren) Maus and Allen (Laura) Maus; a daughter-in-law, Teressa Maus; grandchildren Jonathan, Zane, Brandon, Kyle, Dakota, Andrew and Adam, Brooke; and a sister, Linda Maus; along with aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Rick R. Maus; and a sister, Marcilee Maus. Mr. Maus was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of Zoar UCC and the United Electrical Workers. Visitation is Monday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Zoar United Church of Christ in New Hanover. A funeral will immediately follow with Pastor Carol Tag officiating. Mr. Maus will be buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to his church.

Mary S. Horrell, 79, nee Diewald, of Red Bud, died April 23, 2010 at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo. She was born Feb. 1, 1931 in Ruma, the daughter of the late John and Marie (nee Tecklenberg) Diewald. She married Lloyd Horrell on July 7, 1951 in Red Bud. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Horrell is survived by her children, Donald (Judy) Horrell of Waterloo, John (Patty) Horrell of Red Bud, Judy Horrell of Valley Park, Mo. and Connie Horrell of Columbia; grandchildren Nick (Shannon) Horrell, Luke Horrell, Henry Horrell and Jack Horrell; and a sister, Josephine Riechmann of Valmeyer; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Diewald. Mrs. Horrell was a bookkeeper at Roger’s Redi-Mix for 30 years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud and St. Ann’s Altar Sodality. Visitation was at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. Funeral was at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud with Msgr. Dennis Schaefer officiating. Mrs. Horrell was buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Oak Hill Employees Holiday Fund or masses.

Bonita A. Stewart, nee Kennedy, 66, of Waterloo, died April 24, 2010 in St. Louis, Mo. She was born June 1, 1943 in Prairie du Rocher, the daughter of the late Raymond and Evelyn (nee Palmier) Kennedy. Mrs. Stewart is survived by a daughter, Shannon Steward; granddaughters Ashley Forrest and Brianna Stewart; and a sister, Susan Dugan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Steward. Memorials may be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. A memorial visitation is Tuesday, April 27, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home.
