Deloris R. Mathews, nee Campbell, 77, of Wappapello, Mo., died March 6, 2013, in St. Louis. She was born Jan. 5, 1936, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Frederick Sr. and Bernice (nee Leonard) Campbell. Mrs. Mathew is survived by her fiancé, Charles Akin; children, Linda (Keith) Lennox, Deborah (Jeff) Battin, Daniel Mathews (Connie Melching), Dale Mathews, Jr., and Michael Mathews (Sue Huebner); a daughter-in-law, Linda Mathews; son-in-law, Douglas Akin; grandchildren, Tera (Ronnie) Harrelson, Angela (Todd) Eschmann, Alicia Wilson, Clay Lennox, Chet Jones, Robert "Bubba" Mathews, Michael Lennox, Nikki Mund, Andrea Mathews, Travis Mathews, Kyle Breitenstein, Kailah Akin, Tiffany and Perry Battin; and great-grandchildren, Paige Barker (fiancé Matt Strohmeier), Chandler, Chase and Marley Harrelson, Samantha, Abby and Brenden Eschmann, Sophia Whitmore, Cody, Kimberly and Cameron Lennox, Kylie Riggs, J.J., Michael, Jr., and Benjamin Lennox and Carter Ganns. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert “Odie” Mathews; a daughter, Sandra Akin; infant grandson, John Jennings; a brother, Frederick Campbell Jr.; sister, Patricia Hurd; and her brother-in-law, Melvin Hurd. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Friday, March 8, at the funeral home with Pastor Matt Friz officiating. Mrs. Mathews was buried at the St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery in Hecker. James P. Juengling, 91, of Columbia, died March 7, 2013, at Columbia Rehab and Nursing Center. He was born Dec. 22, 1921, in Columbia, the son of the late William and Elizabeth (nee Dannehold) Juengling. Mr. Juengling is survived by his sons, David L. (Nancy) and James W. (Joy) Juengling, both of Columbia; grandchildren, Michael (Michelle) Juengling, Paul (Karen) Juengling, Angie (Shawn) Pemberton, Amy (Travis) French and Alex Juengling; eight great-grandchildren; and special friend, Betty Schmidt of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille (nee Eschmann) Juengling; second wife, Mary (nee Eskew) Elizabeth Juengling; and sisters, Pearl Landgraf and Mae Limestall. Mr. Juengling served in the U.S. Amy during World War II and was a longtime member of the Columbia American Legion Post 581. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia and retired as a welder from Columbia Quarry Co., after 48 years of employment. James was also a longtime member of the Columbia Sportsman’s Club, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia with Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. Mr. Juengling was buried at the church’s cemetery. Adella Whelan, nee Vogel, 97, of Waterloo, died Feb. 27, 2013, in Red Bud. She was born Sept. 3, 1915, in Burksville, the daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth (nee Bickelhaupt) Vogel. Mrs. Whelan is survived by her daughters Delrose Descher and Delores (Earl) Kopp; grandchildren James (Joanne) Descher, John (Kay) Descher, Linda (Tom) Schnepf, Stacy Banker, Eric Kopp, Tania (Terry) Barbeau, Natalie Kopp and Mark (Rachel) Kopp; great-grandchildren Ryan (Erica) Banker, Michael Banker, Alyssa Banker, Ashley Myers, Victoria Schnepf, Kristin Myers, Grant Descher, Chloe Descher, Eva Descher, Mae Descher, Joseph Barbeau, Tyler Barbeau, Rebecca Barbeau, Steven Kopp and Bailey Kopp; great-great-grandchildren Dana Banker and Harley Barbeau; and a sister-in-law, Viola Whelan; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Whelan; son-in-law, James Descher; a sister, Lucille Vogel; and brothers Elmer Ruby and Harry Vogel. Mrs. Whelan attended SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo where she was active with the Mary and Martha Society. She was a member of the Waterloo Senior Center. Visitation is Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo. A funeral will follow with Father Osang Idagbo officiating. Audrey Lee Dori, nee Minemann 81 of Millstadt, died Feb. 4, 2013, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. She was born Oct. 18, 1931, in Belleville, the daughter of the late Elmer and Vlasta (nee Soukup) Minemann. Mrs. Dori is survived by her daughter Sandra (Don) Steppig of Millstadt; sons Gary (Cynthia) Dori and Daniel D. Dori, both of Millstadt; grandchildren Scott J. (fiancé Nicole Panzau) Steppig and Laura Steppig and Brandon Dori; a brother, Elmer (Patricia) Minemann; and her dog, Brandi. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albeno “Al” Dori. Mrs. Dori attended St James Catholic Church in Millstadt. She was a homemaker who volunteered for 14 years at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville. Audrey enjoyed family vacations, especially to Florida, Michigan, the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park. Visitation was at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt. Funeral was at St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt with Fr. Marvin Volk officiating. Mrs. Dori was buried at Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Millstadt. Kenneth C. Edwards, 82, of Columbia, died Feb. 6, 2013, at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis. He was born Sept. 5, 1930, in Dent County, Mo., the son of the late Carl and Daphnia (nee Grogan) Edwards. Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife of 63 years, Olieta (nee Russell) Edwards; children, Penni (John) Barrett of Tulsa, Okla., Karen (Noel) Patterson of Homewood, Jeffrey (Karen) Edwards of Bridgeton, Mo., John (Robin Jaeggi) Edwards of Glen Carbon, Celia (David) Gutierrez of San Antonio, Tex., and Darla (Bob) Toenjes of Columbia; grandchildren, Jason Barrett, Audrey Patterson, Kimberly Edwards and Jacob Edwards, Samuel, Rachel and Philip Pecaro and Jessica and Kenneth Prosser. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wilber Edwards; and sister, Naomia Asbridge. Mr. Edwards was retired from Cerro Copper in Sauget and attended Westview Baptist Church in Belleville. Jackie E. Horn, nee Freppon, 68 of Oklahoma City, Okla., died Feb. 1, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was born October 14, 1944, the daughter of the late William Freppon and Pearl (nee Bieber) Freppon. Mrs. Horn is survived by her husband, David W. Horn; sisters, Billie (Chuck) Kuni of Belleville, Rose (Soji) Falanna of Valmeyer and Paula (Bill) Melican of Wartburg; brothers, Larry (Alice) Freppon of Belleville, David Freppon of Burksville, Douglas (Vera) Freppon of Rolla, Mo., and Danny Freppon of Dupo; and a grandson, Zachary Melican of Wartburg; along with nieces and nephews. Mrs. Horn was a retired groundskeeper for the Jefferson Barracks Air National Guard Station. Visitation and funeral were at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. Dorothy A. Ransom, nee Stroh, of St. Louis, died Feb. 5, 2013. Mrs. Ransom was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Ransom. She is survived by her children, Ann Jones and Jay (Gloria) Ransom; and grandchildren, Ryan and Kelsey Jones and Jacob Ransom; along with cousins and friends. John “Jack” Eschenfelder, 75, of Sparta, died Feb. 25, 2013, after a sudden illness. He was born March 18, 1937, in Belleville, the son of the late Joseph and Clara Eschenfelder. Mr. Eschenfelder is survived by his wife, JoAnn (nee Schwankhaus) Eschenfelder; sons Jeff (April) Eschenfelder of Plant City, Fla., and Dan (Christine) Eschenfelder of Gainesville, Fla.; and a daughter, Sue (Dan) Braun of Waterloo; grandchildren, Jason (Cortney), Amber and Amy Eschenfelder, Cameron Eschenfelder and Annalee Perez, Megan and Ryan Wodochek, and Gavin Braun; great-grandchildren, Lily Habbeshaw and Jonah Eschenfelder; and sisters, Pat (Leo, deceased) Beck of Mascoutah, Barbara (Jim) Kuebel of Sparta, Margaret (Frank) Drovetti of Sappington, Mo., Therese (Richard) Prieto of Long Beach, Calif. and Carol (Bill) Filler of Aliquippa, Penn.; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Eschenfelder graduated from Cathedral High School in 1955 and entered the Army the same year. During the three years Jack served in the Army, he trained dogs and played in the Army Baseball League. After leaving the Army, Jack returned to Belleville where he would work as a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier for 34 years. He never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with anyone. Jack had fond memories of the people on his route and his co-workers, many of whom were lifelong friends. Some of his happiest times were spent on the ball field coaching his own children and grandchildren and young people who he cared for like they were his own. Coach Jack helped start the Belleville Little Knights football team and coached Okawville little league baseball for more than 20 years. Just recently, Jack helped coach little league baseball in Gainesville, Fla., assisting his son, Dan. Jack also umpired baseball and refereed basketball for many years. Those who knew Jack will miss his warm smile, his quick wit, his funny stories, and his kindness. He will always be remembered as a man of faith, loyalty, love, and humor. In accordance with his wishes, Jack’s body was donated to science. A memorial mass will be Saturday, April 6, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Sparta. Memorials may be made to the Randolph County Humane Society.
Maxine M. Crosson, nee Jaeger, 77, of Waterloo, died Feb. 27, 2013, in Waterloo. She was born May 18, 1935, in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Armin and Ethel (nee Zeiger) Jaeger. Mrs. Crosson is survived by her children, Pamela Kickham, Patricia (Russell, Jr.) Row, Jill (Michael) Larsen and Craig Crosson; grandchildren, Kyle (Clare), Bret and Nicholas Row, Lesley and Philip Larsen, and Dane, William and Grace Crosson; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Row. She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Crosson. Mrs. Crosson was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo, where she was active in the choir and Mary and Martha Society. She had been employed at of Diehl Florist. Maxine enjoyed participating in the Waterloo Country Club’s Ladies Golf League. She enjoyed homemaking, being a seamstress and making crafts. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo with Father Osang Idagbo officiating. Mrs. Crosson was buried in the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to SS. Mathilda Emma Betz, nee Nolte, 93 of Millstadt, died Feb. 28, 2013, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville. She was born Jan. 21, 1920, in East Carondelet, the daughter of the late Philip and Emma (nee Metter) Nolte. Mrs. Betz was a homemaker who attended Bethel United Church of Christ in Cahokia. She enjoyed quilting at the Millstadt Senior Center. Mrs. Betz is survived by her sons, Larry Betz of Belleville and Wayne (Charlene) Betz of Millstadt; a daughter, Judy Betz of Millstadt; grandchildren, Derek (Kelly) Betz, Jason (Heather) Betz, Robyn (Mike) Eiskant, Catherine (Philip Grout) Betz, Austin (Jess) Betz and Christine (Chuck) Branum, Kimberly (Gerald) Restoff and Krista Betz; great-grandchildren, Melanie Restoff, Dennis Restoff, Brandon Restoff, Ryan Restoff, Logan Betz, Emma Betz, Boston Betz, Brady Betz, Blakely Betz, Olivia Eiskant, Max Eiskant and Conner Branum; and a sister-in-law, Florence Agne; along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
