Dennis C. Walster, 96, of Smithton, died Feb. 4, 2013 in Red Bud. He was born Feb. 28, 1916, in Kellogg, the son of the late Frank and Blanche (nee Alberts) Walster. Mr. Walster is survived by his children, Mary Ann (John) McConachie, Rita (Stan) Osterhage and Robert (JoAnn) Walster of Mt. Vernon, Mo.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and two great-great-grandchildren; along with nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and extended family. Mr. Walster was preceded in death by his wife, Clara (nee Menke) Walster; one sister; four brothers; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Walster attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud with Monsignor Dennis Schaefer officiating. Anne Barbeau, nee Prohaska, 95, of Waterloo, died Feb. 1, 2013, in Smithton. She was born Jan. 13, 1918, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (nee Mach) Prohaska. Mrs. Barbeau is survived by her sons, Larry (Sharon) Barbeau, Donald (Doris) Barbeau and Tom (Pat) Barbeau; grandchildren, Michelle (Richard) Chausse, Kimberly (Scott) Doiron, Lori (Terry) Sims, Kristy (Andy) Shondy and Traci (Tony) Biffar; and great-grandchildren, Mark (Hannah) Pigman, Jodi (Brian) Moddell, Jacob Shandy, Michael, William, Nicholas and Patrick Chausse, Ethan Doiron, and Devin, Lucas and Emily Biffar; along with nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard D. Barbeau; great-granddaughters Lucy and Mary Chausse; and a brother, Joseph Prohaska. Mrs. Barbeau was retired from Famous-Barr Co. Rosemary T. Sawyer, nee Mickna, 84, of Waterloo, died Jan. 20, 2013, in Waterloo. She was born March 21, 1928, in Chicago, the daughter of the late Leo and Irene (nee Oswald) Mickna. Mrs. Sawyer is survived by her son, David (Diane) Sawyer; and grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jeremy) LeSaulnier, Bethani (Keith) Kipping and Aaron Sawyer; along with great-grandchildren and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Sawyer; and a daughter, Catherine "Katie" Sawyer. Visitation and funeral were at SS. Joyce A. Nobbe, nee Horn, 86, of Waterloo, died Jan. 31, 2013, in Waterloo. She was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Otto Horn and Minnie (nee Crook) Horn-Gerhardt. Mrs. Nobbe is survived by her husband, Edward Nobbe; children, Thomas (Jane) Nobbe, Susan (Steve) Higgins and Pamela (Randy) Veath; grandchildren, Jared (Rebecca) Nobbe, Brad Nobbe, Ashley, Lindsay, Kylie, Taylor Higgins, Courtney (Clayton) Clark and Morgan Veath; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Louise Nobbe; nephew, Brian (Dina) Nobbe; and a niece, Janet (Larry) Goessling; along with cousins. She was preceded in death by a step-brother, Herbert Gerhardt; step-father, Edwin Gerhardt; parents-in-law, Henry and Lydia Nobbe; and a granddaughter-in-law, Kelly Nobbe. Shirley A. Lepp, 82, nee Stevenson, of Columbia, died Jan. 29, 2013, at Columbia Rehab and Nursing Center. She was born March 19, 1930, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of the late William and Alberta (nee Nichols) Stevenson. Shirley married Robert F. Lepp in 1950 in Kansas, City. He died in 2005. Mrs. Lepp is survived by sons, Robert (Pat) Lepp of St. Louis and Joseph (Barb) Lepp of Columbia; grandchildren, John Lepp, Jennifer (Matt) Brinson, Merritt (Brian) Schlemmer, Natalie Lepp, Christina Lepp, Derrick (Jamie) Lepp and Alex Lepp; a sister, JoAnn (Joe) Wilkerson of Tulsa, Okla.; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Margaret Ann (Mike) Conrad and Charles (Mary) Lepp; along with seven great-grandchildren. Besides her husband; Mrs. Lepp was preceded in death by a son, John M. Lepp; and a brother, Bill Stevenson. Mrs. Lepp attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. Marian Q. Rehling, nee Roddy, 88, of Waterloo, died Jan. 31, 2013, in Red Bud. She was born July 7, 1924, in St. Louis, the daughter of the late Daniel and Carrie Lee (nee Reed) Roddy. Mrs. Rehling is survived by sisters-in-law, Jeanette Gregson and Gloria Roddy; and nieces and nephews, Russell (Diane) Gregson, Gordon (Cindy) Gregson, Alice Gregson and Linda, Randy and Scott Roddy; along with great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland Rehling; a brother, Joseph Roddy; brother-in-law, Orville Gregson; and a nephew, Thomas Roddy. Mrs. Rehling was a past Worthy Matron Order of the Eastern Star of Waterloo. She enjoyed sewing. At Marian’s request, there was no visitation or service. Gene O'Farrell, 91, of Columbia, died Jan. 27, 2013, at Columbia Rehab and Nursing Center. He was born June 14, 1921, in Gillette, Wyo., the son of the late Patrick and Mary E. (nee McFadden) O'Farrell. He married Mary Ellen (nee Stanton) O'Farrell in 1957, in Clayton, Mo. In addition to his wife, Mr. O’Farrell is survived by his sons Gene Patrick (Angie) O'Farrell of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Sean Michael (Louise) O'Farrell of Chicago and Brian Joseph (Rhonda) O'Farrell of Columbia; and grandchildren Barrett and Cullin O'Farrell, and Kelly O'Farrell. Mr. O’Farrell served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia and was a retired civil service cataloger in St. Louis. Gene and his wife enjoyed ballroom dancing. Visitation is Saturday, Feb. 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. A funeral will immediately follow with Fr. Frank B. Canova Sr., 86, of Mt. Lebanon, Pa., died Jan. 19, 2013. He was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Dravosburg, the son of the late John and Annetta (nee Gurgosalici) Canova. Mr. Canova is survived by his children, Diane Canova (John Morrill), of Arlington, Va., Karen L. Canova (Marc Goldstein) of Silver Spring, Md., Frank Jr. (Ellen) Canova of Waterloo, Thomas (Cynthia) Canova of Springfield and Maureen (Randy) Canova-Potts of St. Louis; grandchildren, Kathryn, Caroline, Christopher and Anna Canova; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Swieconek; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Margaret Rose Scanlon Canova; a sister, Mary Canova; and brothers, John and Louis (Gino) Canova. Following Mr. Canova’s graduation in 1943 from St. Peter High School in McKeesport, Pa., he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater as a communications chief with the 321 Infantry Regiment, 81st Division, and was involved in major battles, including the Battle of PeIeliu. After the war, Mr. Canova worked in his family's grocery store, Canova Brothers, in McKeesport. He also worked in Pittsburgh for the Pepperidge Farm Bread Company and, until his retirement, he worked in sales and as a broker at Prudential Insurance Company in the South Hills area. Mr. Canova enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and spending time with his family. Visitation was at Beinhauer Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Bernard Church. Mr. Canova was buried at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Jubilee Association.
Lillian Ruff, nee Hirsch, 88, of Waterloo, died Jan. 18, 2013 in Waterloo. She was born Nov. 14, 1924, in Maeystown, the daughter of the late George and Emma (nee Wild) Hirsch. Mrs. Ruff is survived by her nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon O. Ruff; a sister, LaVerne Wienhoff; and an adopted brother, Norman Hirsch. Clarence Schaefer, 83, of Ruma, died Jan. 23, 2013, at Red Bud Regional Hospital with his family by his side. He was born Feb. 2, 1929, in Waterloo, the son of the late Jacob and Frances (nee Eschmann) Schaefer. Mr. Schaefer was baptized Feb. 3, 1929, by Rev. Charles Eschmann at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ruma. Mr. Schaefer was an engineer in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed at Kunsan Air Base. He was a farmer who also drove a milk truck and a concrete truck. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and cooking. Clarence married Joan Mary (nee Degenhardt) Schaefer in 1956 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud.
