Bonnie Lea Henry, 83, died Sept. 4, 2009, at Oak Hill in Waterloo. She was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Ogallala, Neb., the third of eight children to Lucy and John McQueen. She and her husband, Lyle Burneal Henry, shared the same birthday and were married on that date in 1944. Besides her husband of 65 years, Mrs. Henry is survived by her daughters Dianna Henry (Jerry Sipe) of Lawrence, Kan., Rhonda Henry (fiancé David Fleming) of Union, Mo., and Brenda (Charley) Roberts of Waterloo; a sister, Donna Beckwith of Oklahoma; a brother, Dean McQueen of Arizona; grandchildren Michelle Gerant, Flint Rogers, Brie Rogers, Sean Gerant, Travis Roberts, Brandy Dodel, Destiney Conley, Joe P. Duever and John Duever; and great-grandchildren Grant Henry, Elise Dodel, Brandon Roberts, Justin Dodel and Logan Roberts; along with nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and many friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Henry was preceded in death by daughter, Connie Gerant, along with her siblings and foster parents. A remembrance gathering for family and friends was at Oak Hill Nursing Home in Waterloo.

Alice Moisio, 93, of St. Louis County, Mo., formerly of Columbia, died Sept. 4, 2009. She was born Aug. 20, 1916, in East Springfield, Pa., the daughter of the late James and Martha (Ford) Hall. She married Victor Moisio in 1937 in Cleveland, Oh. He died in 1986. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Moisio was preceded in death by her brothers James Hall and Charles Hall; and a sister, Mary Weldon. She is survived by her children Jo Ann Lancaster of Lee, Ma., Mary Moisio of Painted Post, NY., Patricia (Stan) Ciapciak of St. Louis County, Mo/., Martha Roberts of St. Louis, Mo., Michael (Lee) Moisio of St. Louis County, Mo., Patrick (Mary) Moisio of Tucson, Ariz., and Peter Moisio of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Martha Petrigala of Madison, Oh.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; along with other relatives and friends. Mrs. Moisio was retired from Vertex Chemical in St. Louis, Mo. She was a member of St. Paul UCC in Columbia and the Columbia Woman's Club. A memorial service was at St. Paul UCC of Columbia with Pastor Kristofer Avise-Rouse officiating. Memorials may be made to the Columbia Public Library or her church.

Stanislaw “Stanley” Balawender, 84, of Waterloo, died Sept. 4, 2009 in Missouri. He was born May 24, 1925 in Poland, the son of the late Anthony and Amelia Balawender. In addition to his parents, Mr. Balawender was preceded in death by his wife Rose, who died in 1998. He is survived by many friends. Mr. Balawender served in the Polish Army during World War II and was held as a POW in Germany. He was employed as a laborer with Local 196 and was a member of the VFW. Stanley was the owner and operator of the St. Joe Tavern for the past 34 years. Visitation was at DeFabio Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Patrick Church in Tipton. He was buried at the church’s cemetery.

Bernelle “Nellie” Goeddel, nee Frierdich, 79, of Waterloo, died Sept. 6, 2009. She was born April 16, 1930 in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Fredrick and Elizabeth (Langhans) Frierdich. Mrs. Goeddel is survived by her grandchildren Darrel (Dawn) Goeddel, Jason (Liette) Goeddel, Crystal Wettekin, Jeremy Goeddel, Amy (Michael) Street and Joel Goeddel; great-grandchildren Sydney and Elyse Goeddel; a sister, Alvira Miller; and a brother, Herbert (Ada) Frierdich; along with a sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbert Goeddel; a son, Warren Goeddel; a sister, Alberta Goeddel; and a brother-in-law. Mrs. Goeddel was a retired real estate broker who was a member of St. Paul UCC in Waterloo. She played in Kloepper tournaments and was a member of the Kitchen Band. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Paul UCC in Waterloo with Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein officiating. Mrs. Goeddel was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to her church or to the American Diabetes Association.

Robert Dale Maurer, 68, of Waterloo, died Sept. 6, 2009, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was born Sept. 27, 1940 in Red Bud, the son of the late Benedict and Clara (nee Einwich) Maurer. Mr. Maurer is survived by his wife, Judith (nee Niebruegge) Maurer; sons David Maurer and Eric (Krystal) Maurer; grandchildren Ben, Danielle and Carson Maurer and Kyler Trankle; a sister, Doris (Eugene) Stamm; brother, Eugene (Bonnie) Maurer; mother-in-law, Alvera Niebruegge; sister-in-law, Betty Jo Niebruegge; and brother-in-law, Robert (Darlene) Niebruegge; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister Myrtle Ostendorf; niece, Sidney Paisley; father-in-law, Robert Niebruegge; and brother-in-law, David Niebruegge. After graduating from SS. Peter and Paul Grade School, Mr. Maurer earned a diploma from Waterloo High School in 1958. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1962 from SIU Carbondale. He then joined the U.S. Air Force and served three years as an officer. Following the service to his country, Mr. Maurer spent almost 40 years in the brokerage industry, the majority of it as a corporate vice president and branch manager for A.G. Edwards and Sons in Belleville. He retired in 2008. Mr. Maurer was a member of St. Paul UCC in Waterloo and the Waterloo American Legion Post 747. He was very active in his son’s athletic activities as a fan, coach and supporter. He spent a lot of his free time with his beloved grandchildren and rarely missed cheering them on at their sporting events. Bob enjoyed playing golf both on local courses and on those near his retirement home in Florida. He was a member of the Waterloo Country Club and the Mission Inn Golf Club in Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Paul UCC in Waterloo with Pastor Doug Roberts officiating. Mr. Maurer was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or the Waterloo Sports Association.

Roman Wood, 85, of Columbia, died Sept. 6, 2009, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Mehlville, Mo. He was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Black, Mo., the son of the late John and Delse (Troutman) Wood. He married Barbra (Campbell) Wood in 2007 in Waterloo. In addition to his wife, Mr. Wood is survived by step-daughters Betty Rodgers of Ava and Sandy Gummersheimer of New Hanover; sisters Jessie Murel of California and Mae Engalhardt of St. Peters, Mo.; and brothers Lowell Wood of Afton, Mo.; Robert Wood of Birch Tree, Mo., Harry Wood of Arnold, Mo., and James Wood of St. Peters, Mo. He was preceded in death by brothers Denver, Raymond, Irvin and John Jr. Wood; and sisters Marie Johnson and Lorine Wood. Mr. Wood served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from the Columbia Quarry. He was a member of Zoar UCC in New Hanover, the Columbia American Legion Post 581 and a lifetime member of the Dupo V.F.W. Post 6368. Visitation and funeral were at Lawlor Funeral Home. Mr. Wood was buried at the Zoar UCC Cemetery.

Robert Van Conia, 74, of Columbia, died Sept. 7, 2009, in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Oct. 29, 1934 in Cannelton, Ind., the son of the late Noble and Bertha (nee Hawhee) Van Conia. Mr. Van Conia is survived by his wife, Gale Van Conia (nee McClenahan - Bachelier); children Brent (Ann) Van Conia, Dianne Van Conia and Jo (Craig) Reuter; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Juanita (John) Cooper, Peggy Studt ad Clyde Polster ; along with 10 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Polster; and a brother-in-law, Robert Studt. Mr. Van Conia was a member of the Shriner's Ainad Temple (Ainad Patrol), Waterloo VFW Post 6504 and Columbia American Legion Post 581. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Groennert officiating. Mr. Van Conia was buried at the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Hospital or the Humane Society of Monroe County.

Jeanette Carolyn Branson, nee Foster, 70, of Fults, died Sept. 8, 2009 in St. Louis, Mo. She was born May 8, 1939 in Valmeyer. Mrs. Branson is survived by her husband, Clyde Branson; children William (Paula) Branson, LaRita (Ronald) Mohl and Juanita (John) Roland; grandchildren Jenna and Travis Branson, Adam Vogt, Katlyn Mohl and Mariah Roland; mother, Evelyn (nee Unterseh) Foster; and sisters Pam Foster, Diane (Sonny) Otten and Barb (Mike) Fair; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father John W. Foster; and a son, Paul Branson. Mrs. Branson was a local realtor for 20 years; was a member of the Illinois Realtor Association and the Waterloo Lions Club. She attended services at St. John UCC of Maeystown. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. John UCC in Maeystown with Pastor Patrick Poole officiating. She was buried at St. John UCC Cemetery in Valmeyer. Memorials may be made to the St. John UCC Cemetery in Maeystown.

Norma J. Reinhold, 76, of Prairie du Rocher died Sept. 13, 2009. She was born Feb. 18, 1933 in Auburn Neb., the daughter of the late James and Amber (nee Applegate) Clair. Mrs. Reinhold is survived by her children Linda (Floyd) Roy, David (Patricia) Reinhold, Joyce (Danny) Wetzler, George (Tammy) Reinhold, Michael (Phyllis) Reinhold of Prairie du Rocher, Nancy (James) Pierce of Granite City, Angela (Marvin) Parker of Hecker and Dalbert Pittman of Hastings, Neb.; a brother-in-law; 22 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Reinhold. Ms Reinhold was a retired cook at Prairie du Rocher Grade School and was a member of St Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation was at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home. Funeral was at St Joseph Catholic Church in Prairie du Rocher. Memorials made be made to masses, the Alzheimer’s Foundation and Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Victor J. Helfrich, 88, died Sept.13, 2009 at his home in St. Louis. He was born Oct. 9, 1921 near Paderborn, the son of the late Charles and Mary ( nee Maurer) Helfrich. He married Emma Jean (nee Haberl) Helfrich in 1949 at Ss. Peter and Paul Church. Since their marriage, they made their home in south St. Louis and raised their two children Stan (Linn) and Susan. Surviving relatives in Waterloo are sister-in-law, Pauline Helfrich, nieces Carol (Jerry) Postlewait and Linda (Kendall) Newbern; brother-in-law, Wilbert “Whips” (Merdel) Haberl; and nephews Chris (Judy) Haberl and Jeff (Gina) Haberl; great-nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ray Helfrich. Mr. Helfrich served in the U.S. Army in the south Pacific during World War II. He is a charter member of Waterloo VFW Post 6504. Visitation was at Kutis Affton Chapel in St. Louis. Funeral was at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in St. Louis. Mr. Helfrich was buried at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony’s Hospice or Alzheimer’s Association.
