Jay Bender, 67, of Waterloo, died June 19, 2004, at Waterloo. He was born June 27, 1936, at St. Louis, the son of the late Chester and Estelle Bender nee Leschner. Mr. Bender married Patricia Bender nee Kroll; she survives him. He is also survived by his children Greg Bender, Tracey Bender, Lesley (Randy) Otwell, Terrey (Troy) Scott and Nickey (Vince) Brooks; grandchildren Melody, Jessica, Ike, Garritt, Bambi, Dustin, Katie, Nathan, Nadine and Saph; great-grandchildren Mikey, Jermayn, Jocelynn and Skyler; and sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters-in-law Nancie Farago and Candy Thorpe. Mr. Bender was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a 30-year member of Boilermakers Local #27. Antoinette M. Jacobsen nee Borgerding, 87, of Columbia, died June 21, 2004, at Columbia Convalescent Center. She was born December 14, 1916, at Germantown, the daughter of the late Joseph and Emma Borgerding nee Hopen. Mrs. Jacobsen married the late Fred Jacobsen in 1942; he died in 1978. She is survived by her sons Dennis (Tish) Jacobsen and John (Judy) Jacobsen; sisters Betty (Donald) Schultz, Theresa (Kenneth) Ashlock and Mary (Fred) Eicholz; brothers Roman (Carmen) Borgerding, Johnny (Rusty) Borgerding, Cletus (Delores) Borgerding and Lawrence (Pat) Borgerding; grandson Erik Jacobsen; and relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters Mary Isabelle Borgerding and Rita Mae Borgerding; and brothers James (Kathy) Borgerding and Gerald (Jean) Borgerding. Mrs. Jacobsen was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia, where she was a member of the Altar Society and the quilting group. There was a private visitation at the family’s request. A funeral mass was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, officiated by Fr. Steve Gira. Esther L. Gould nee Bequette, 83, of Columbia, died June 22, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. She was born August 13, 1920, at Dupo, the daughter of the late Edward J. and Cora Bequette nee Johnson. Mrs. Gould married to Floyd E. Gould in 1945; he survives her. She is also survived by her daughters Jeannie (Jimmie) Vanover and Joni (Ernie) Chapman; sister Dorothy Bone; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, son James (Mary) Gould; sister Marion Dehn; and brothers Raymond Bequette, Edward Bequette and Leroy Bequette. Mrs. Bequette was a bartender at Kuehner’s and Greenfield’s. Her visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. A funeral mass was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, officiated by Fr. Carl Scherrer. Robert R. Boehne, 65, of Waterloo, died June 24, 2004, at Waterloo. He was born September 23, 1938, the son of Mildred E. (nee Heller) and the late Robert W. Boehne. Mr. Boehne was married to the late Phyllis L. Boehne nee Jett. He is survived by his mother; step-children Steven (Shirley) Bergman, Debe Michalke and Donald (Sue) Bergman; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother-in-law David (Jean) Wiese; and sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, wife, and sister Bonnie Wiese. Mr. Boehne was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo and the D&B Club, and he was an Air Force veteran. Marlene Mary Fromme nee Goessling, 67, died June 25, 2004, at Columbia Convalescent Center. She was born April 14, 1937, at Waterloo, the daughter of the late Herman and Adelia Goessling nee Wagner. Mrs. Fromme married Francis Fromme in 1956; he survives her. She is also survived by her sons Timothy Fromme, Patrick (Amanda Fromme) and Daniel (Kim) Fromme; grandchildren Brittany, Christopher, Elliott, Emma and Taisha; sister Dorothy (Rich) Steingrubey; and brothers Harold (Ann) Goessling and Gene (Marlene) Goessling. Mrs. Fromme was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. She had worked at US Bank in St. Louis as a systems analyst, and she was active with the Columbia Volunteer Fire Department. Her visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Ernestine L. Gardner nee Umbreit, 83, of Waterloo, died June 30, 2004, in St. Louis. She was born December 11, 1920, the daughter of the late Ernest and Sophie Umbreit nee Burkhardt. Mrs. Gardner was married to the late Robert L. Gardner. She is survived by her children William (Vickie) Gardner, of Waterloo, and Julie (William) Chmelir, of Webster Groves, Mo.; grandsons Matthew (Stephanie) Gardner, of Waterloo, and Steven Gardner and his fiancée Candace Carrico, of Waterloo; great-grandson Eli Gardner; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Susan G. Gardner and brother William R. Umbreit. Mrs. Gardner was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Waterloo. Thelma L. Zimmerman nee Sutter, 79, of Dupo, died June 30, 2004, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville. She was born August 17, 1924, in Dupo, the daughter of the late Louis and Christina Sutter nee Kurtz. Mrs. Zimmerman married the late Robert K. Zimmerman DDS in 1946. She is survived by her daughter Camilla K. Zimmerman, of Dupo; son Robert (Natalia Nikolova-) Zimmerman, of Canada; granddaughters Jennifer M. Zimmerman and Brittany A. Zimmerman; sisters Alma Tebow, of Moberly, Mo., and Betty (Earl) Stahlheber, of Dongola; brothers Herbert (Judy Rugraff) Sutter, of Fenton, Mo., and Don (Sandy) Sutter, of Columbia; and nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Mrs. Zimmerman was a member of First Congregational Church in Dupo and Unitarian Church of St. Louis. She was a literary critic with the Daugherty Public Library in Dupo, provided oversight of church publications at the local and national levels, and wrote at human interest column in the Dupo newspaper. She was also a Sunday school teacher and past president of the Dupo Parent Teacher Association. Her visitation and memorial service were at Lawlor Funeral Home, Pastor William Groennert officiating. Carol S. Miller nee Myers, 56, of Columbia, died June 2, 2004, at her residence. Mrs. Miller was married to Bennie Miller. She was born January 17, 1948, at St. Louis, the daughter of the late Walker and Dorothy Myers nee Hill. She is survived by her husband; daughter Linda (Peter) Lieder; grandchildren Derek Miller, Ashley Miller and Nicole Dougherty; brother Ronald Myers; sisters Sharon McGill, Patricia (Gary) Sutton and Betty (Greg) Huelsman; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and son Bennie Miller Jr. Mrs. Miller owned and operated M & L Trucking in St .Louis. She was also a member of Moose Lodge #4 in Caseyville. Fr. Edwin H. Hustedde, 74, died June 6, 2004, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Fr. Hustedde was born October 14, 1929, at Breese, the son of the late Edwin G. and Cecilia Hustedde nee Sherman. He is survived by sisters Margaret Beckmann and Mary Therese (Tom) Molitor; brother Richard (Roselyn) Hustedde; sister-in-law Clare Hustedde; nieces Karen Harrell, Michelle Netemeyer, Beth O’Connor, Lynn de Weck and Nicole Gray; and nephews Glenn Beckmann and Mark Molitor. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jerome Hustedde. Fr. Hustedde attended St. Henry’s Prep School, St. Mary of the Lake Seminary and St. Louis University. He was ordained a priest in 1959, and was superintendent of SS. Peter and Paul School and was appointed principal of Gibault High School in 1967. In 1983 he became pastor of St. Anthony’s in Beckmeyer. He returned to Gibault in 1993 to serve as director of development, where he worked until 2002. He also served as pastor of St. Mary’s in Valmeyer and Immaculate Conception in Madonnaville until his death. Visitation was at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. The Mass of Resurrection was at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, officiated by Bishop Wilton D. Gregory. He is buried at St. Dominic Catholic Cemetery in Breese.
Martha A. Holtgrave nee Eschmann, 95, of Breese, died June 5, 2004, at Caring First Nursing Home in Breese. Mrs. Holtgrave was married to the late Robert W. Holtgrave. She was born October 18, 1908, the daughter of the late Henry and Anna Eschmann nee Meirink. She is survived by daughters Joan (Jack) Fields, Mary (Robert) Alpiser, Julia Moeller, Ann (Vernon) Mohesky and Therese (Wayne) Johanning; sister Florence (Joseph) Kressig; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Victor Eschmann; sisters Clara Pollmann, Nova Hodapp and Eleanor Eschmann; son-in-law Ed Moeller; grandson James Moeller; and great-granddaughter Chloe Fields. Mrs. Holtgrave was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese. She was a member of the Altar Sodality and a founding member of the Clinton County R.E.A. Visitation was at Moss Funeral Home in Breese. Funeral mass was at St. Dominic Catholic Church, officiated by Fr. Patrick Peter. She is buried at St. Dominic-St. Augustine Cemetery in Breese.
