Eugene J. Crook, 57, of Columbia died Feb. 22 [2004] at St. Louis. He was the husband of Emma Sue (DeMond) Crook. Mr. Crook was born March 22, 1946 at Red Bud the son of the late Joseph J. and Mildred M. (Jaeger) Crook. Besides his wife a daughter Emily M. Crook; two brothers, Robert Crook and Gary Crook; a sister Janet Hergenroeder; other relatives and friends survive him. Besides his parents a sister Sandra L. Gibbar preceded him in death. He was a former salesman for National Auto Supply, a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, American Legion Post 581, a life member of VFW Post 6504, AARP, Illinois Police Association and the DAV. Visitation was at the Quernheim Funeral Home where a funeral was conducted Feb. 24 with Msgr. Dennis Schaefer officiating. Burial was at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
Elmer C. Eschmann, 88, of Columbia died Feb. 20 [2004] at Columbia Convalescent Center. He was the wife of Alvera Eschmann nee Habermehl. They were married Nov. 18,1939. Other survivors include a son Bill (Erica) Eschmann; a sister Florence Becker; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Eschmann was born Dec. 18, 1915 at St. Louis the son of the late William C. and Ida Eschmann nee Kaempfe. Besides his parents, two sisters, Stella Miller and Ella Wilde and a brother Earl Eschmann, preceded him in death. He was retired office manager of Transcom Trucking in St. Louis. He was a member of St. Paul UCC in Columbia. Visitation was at the Lawlor Funeral Home where Pastor Kim Kelly Feb. 24 conducted a funeral. Burial was at Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery.
Alice L. (Fowler) Mayo, 74, of Columbia died Feb. 18 [2004] at Columbia Convalescent Center. She was the wife of Thomas L. Mayo. They were married Oct. 11, 1946. She was the daughter of the late John and Margaret (Fury) Fowler. Survivors include a daughter Vicki (Joseph) Sitton; three sons, Thomas (Jeannine) Mayo, Darrell (Eugenia) Mayo, David (Laverne) Mayo; two sisters, Ruth (John) Bremer and Ester (Leonard) Starwait; four brothers, John Fowler, Jim (Jean) Fowler, Harry Fowler and Robert Fowler; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Visitation was at the Lawlor Funeral Home where a funeral was conducted Feb. 20. Burial was at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, Belleville.
Loretta E. Hoefft, 94, of Maeystown died Feb. 17 [2004] at Red Bud. She was the daughter of the late Sebastian, Sr. and Elizabeth Hoefft nee Koch and was born May 20,1009 at Maeystown. Survivors include a niece Tamara (Carl) Rieckenberg, a nephew Rick (Brenda) Hoefft and other relatives and friends. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ida Rippelmeyer, Clara Altes and Leona M. Hoffmann; two brothers, Sebastian Hoefft, Jr. and Arnold Hoefft. She was a member of St. John UCC and the Women's Fellowship. Visitation was at the Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral was at St. John United Church of Christ at Maeystown with Pastor Ivan Horn officiating. Burial was at St. John Cemetery.
Clarence H. Stumpf, 100, died Feb. 13 [2004] at Waterloo. He was born January 14, 1904 at Foster Pond the son of the late Fred L. and Louisa Stumpf nee Blittersdorf. Survivors include nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Esther F. Stumpf nee Schewe: two sisters, Athena (John) Bicklein and Olinda (Otto0 Mueller; brothers, Eugene (Frieda) Stumpf, Raymond (Alice) Stumpf, Roland (Margaret) Stumpf, Elmer (Esther) Stumpf and Erwin (Clara) Stumpf. Laura Roider nee Washausen, 83, of Waterloo died Feb. 12 [2004] at Belleville. She was the wife of Anton G. Roider. Mrs. Roider was born Sept. 6, 1920 the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Washausen nee Bicklein. Besides her husband she is survived by three children, Mary Ann (Gary) Bueltemann, Martin (Linda) Roider and Leland (Sheila) Roider; a brother Raymond (Bertha) Washausen; a sister-in-law Hilda Washausen; brother-in-law Herbert (Leota) Roider; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a son Virgil Raymond Roider and a brother John Washausen. He was a member of St. Paul UCC. Visitation was at the Quernheim Funeral Home. Edith L. Meister nee Law, 73, of Waterloo died Feb. 12 [2004] at Red Bud. She was the wife of Frederick A. Meister. She was born July 13, 1930 at Waterloo the daughter of the late Oscar D. and Louise A. Law nee Feldmeier. Besides her husband, Mrs. Meister is survived by two daughters, Heidi (Steve) Notheisen, Wendy (Richard) Juenger; a son Ross Meister; four grandchildren, Drew and Brad Notheisen and Maeve and Leah Juenger. Two sisters, Florence Schiemer and Marian E. Law and one brother Arthur Law preceded her in death. Mrs. Meister was a retired secretary for Manufacturers Railway and the Waterloo Public Schools. She was a member of St. Paul UCC of Waterloo, the Order of the Eastern Star, Al Sihah Temple and Daughters of the Nile. Visitation was at the Quernheim Funeral Home. Elizabeth M. Stahl nee Koch, 89, of Dupo died Feb. 8 [2004] at Belleville. She was the wife of the late Nelson P. Stahl and the daughter of the late Gustav and Anna Koch nee Wernicker and was born Jan. 9,1915 at Maeystown. Survivors include three sons, William G. Stahl, Nelson (Deloris) Stahl and Wade (Carolyn) Teeter; two sisters, Frieda Steinmann and Dorothy Woodcock; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Besides her parents and husband, a daughter Jacqueline Teeter, a daughter-in-law Peggy DeAnna Stahl nee McCutcheon and a granddaughter Felicia Paige Lund nee Lenhardt preceded her in death. Kenneth L. Guetterman, 62, of Maeystown died Feb. 6 [2004] at Red Bud. He was the husband of Dolores J. Guetterman nee Reynolds. Mr. Guetterman was born Aug. 4, 1941 at Belleville the son of the late Henry and Hilda Guetterman nee Rasp. Besides his wife he is survived by four sons, Eric (Ann) Guetterman, Wayne (Amy) Guetterman, Dean (Laura) Guetterman, Gary (Michelle) Guetterman; a daughter Kay (Rick) Smith; step-children, Shawn (Katie) LaFollette, Michael (Jayme) LaFollette, Lisa (Brent) Carron, Mark (Christy) LaFollette, Tiffany (Jeremy) Schilling; 18 grandchildren; and other relatives. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an aunt and uncle Dr. Paul and Zita Altmann. H was a retired farmer and a past president of the Millstadt Jaycees. Matthew S. Nitzsche died Feb. 5 [2004]. He was the husband of Melany Nitzsche nee Garrison. Besides his wife he is survived by his parents Stewart and Kathleen Nitzsche; three brothers, Chris, Thomas and Michah Nitzsche; stepparents Ed and Mary Ann Madden; stepbrothers, Sean and Cory Madden; other relatives and friends.
