Betty Wilcox, 86, of Fults, died Feb. 28, 2014. She was born Nov. 15, 1927, in Kidd, the daughter of the late Orville and Della (nee McClenahan) Wilcox. Mrs. Wilcox is survived by her son, Ronald Loerch; brother, Floyd Wilcox; half-brothers, Elmer Schultheis and Glenn (Susan) Schultheis; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and great – great-grandchildren, along with an aunt, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a member of Zion UCC - St. Joe. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor Nancy Spier-Lee officiating. Mrs. Wilcox was buried at the St. John Cemetery in Fults. Edward D. Schaffer, 83, of Collinsville, formerly of Cahokia, died Feb. 17, 2014, at Relais Bonne Eau Hospice Home in Edwardsville. He was born Jan. 5, 1931, in St. John's Station, Mo., the son of the late Edward and Dorothy (nee Miller) Schaffer. Mr. Schaffer is survived by his son, Timothy (Angela) Schaffer of Cahokia; a daughter, Barbara (Peter) Stehman of Collinsville; grandchildren, Jenny (Eric) Hayes, David (Elisha) Schaffer, Nicole and Robert Schaffer, and Courtney, Christopher and Nathan Stehman; great-grandchildren, Audrey and Dominic Hayes, Devin Cason and Malia Schaffer; a sister, Geri (Jim) Vogt of Columbia; a brother-in-law, Dennis (Marie) McMullan of rural Waterloo; and sisters-in-law, Patricia McMullan of Columbia, Lucy (Robert) Ahne of Carbondale and Janet McMullan; along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (nee McMullan) Schaffer; sisters Joan Becker and Shirley O'Brien; and his granddaughter, Donna Schaffer. Mr. Schaffer was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a longtime member of the Columbia American Legion Post 581, where he served on the honor guard. Edward was a retired millwright for National Lead and Amax Big River Zinc. He attended Holy Family Catholic Church in Cahokia. Funeral is Saturday, March 8, at 11 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church in Cahokia with Father Paul Wienhoff officiating. Mr. Schaffer’s body was donated to the Washington University School of Medicine. Arrangements were handled by the Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville. Raymond G. Wilson, 81, of Red Bud, died Feb. 27, 2014 in Red Bud. He was born Sept. 19, 1932 in St. Louis, the son of the late John R. and Rosetta Lee (nee Leonard) Wilson. Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Evelyn G. Wilson (nee Langston); children, Raymond K. Wilson, Sharon (Ray) Zaiontz, Jerry E. Wilson, Tina (Charlie) Rednour, John R. (Winona) Wilson and Rosetta (Chris) Robinson; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty (Joe) Newbern and Joan Huff; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Pebble Marie Reeds; brothers, James, Kerwin and Edward Wilson. He was a member of Promise of Living Water Church - Red Bud, US Army and Navy Korean and Vietnam Veteran and the Valmeyer American Legion Post #901. Visitation and funeral were at Promise of Living Water Church in Red Bud with Pastor Mark Frisbie officiating. Mr. Wilson was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Edna Brown, nee Mosbacher, 85, of Valmeyer, died Feb. 24, 2014, in St. Louis. She was born Dec. 14, 1928, in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Ernst and Emma (nee Linker) Mosbacher. Mrs. Brown is survived by her son, Michael (Laurie) Brown; a grandson, Timothy Brown (Dawn Heusohn); granddaughters, Dawn (Jim) Burns and Jennifer Brown (Noah Klinkhardt); great-grandchildren. Olivia, Jackson, Evan, Avery and Theodore; and sisters-in-law, Marge Mosbacher and Grace (Charles) Aycock; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Brown; a brother, Earl Mosbacher; and sisters, Elsie Mosbacher and Erma Senti. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Valmeyer American Legion Post 901 Women's Auxiliary and the Valmeyer Senior Citizens. She was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Valmeyer. A celebration of her life was at the First Baptist Church in Valmeyer with Pastor Darris Kaufmann officiating. Mildred Range, nee Touchette, 97, of Millstadt, died Feb. 24, 2014 at Columbia Rehab and Nursing. She was born July 10, 1916 in Centreville, the daughter of the late Dan and Octavia (nee Byron) Touchette. Mrs. Range is survived by her children, Faye (Dale) LaBrier of Troy, Pauline Range of Millstadt (friend Kai Andersen), Judy (Everett) Hamilton of Columbia, Robert (Pat) Range of Collinsville, Paul Range of Millstadt, Jim (Sharon) Range of Millstadt and Gary (Toni) Range of Freeburg; grandchildren, Carolyn Enboden, Diane (Rande) Gibbs, Dale A. LaBrier, Debbie (Jeff) Crossley, Kim (Gary) Konkel, Greg (Kathy) Hamilton, Doug (Kara Le Chien) Hamilton, Lyndsey (Ryan) Mehrtens, Brooke Range, Bradley (Teri) Range, Eric Range and Rachael (Michael) Collins; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Range; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; along with nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Range (who died in 2006); and sisters, Rosemary Reinhardt and Marie Schaefer; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and a great-grandson. Mrs. Range and her husband Arthur were lifelong farmers. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, needlework, canning and caring for animals. Mildred also attended her sons’ baseball and softball games and was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Mildred and Arthur traveled in their motorhome spending many winter months in Florida. Mildred was a life-long member of Immaculate Conception Church in Centreville, where she was an active quilter. After the church closed she attended St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt. Visitation was at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt. Funeral was at St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt with Father Marvin Volk officiating. Mrs. Range was buried at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt.
Rev. Joseph L. Newbern III, 81, of Waterloo, died Feb. 28, 2014, in St. Louis, the son of the late Joseph Louis and Lula (nee Collins) Newbern II. Mr. Newbern is survived by his wife, Betty (nee Wilson) Newbern; children Valerie (Craig) Nelson of Valmeyer, Charles "Chad" Newbern and Damon Newbern; a grandson, James “Jace” Nelson; and sisters, Mary Lou (Forrest) Caswell, Louella (Col. John) Oliver and Betty (Nick) Cusanelli; as well as step-children, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles (Margaret “Luke”) Newbern. Rev. Newbern attended New Life Church in Waterloo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps and the National Guard. Visitation and funeral were at New Life Church in Waterloo with Pastor David Eckstadt officiating. Rev. Newbern will be buried at the Waterloo City Cemetery.

Julia M. Curran, nee Ruby, 101, of Waterloo, died Feb. 17, 2014. She was born May 21, 1912 in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (nee Bene) Ruby. Mrs. Curran is survived by children, Caroline (Stan) Spehn, Robert (Mildred) Curran, Frank (Jean) Curran, Suzanne Stahl, Mary Fieldson, Charles (Eileen) Curran and Patricia (Ray) Dugan; 30 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; along with a sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Curran; sons, William M. Curran, John Curran and James Curran; a daughter, Roseann Curran; granddaughter, Donna Marie Stahl; and son-in-law Don Stahl. Mrs. Curran attended St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tipton. Funeral was at St. Patrick Church with Father John Kizhak officiating. Mrs. Curran was buried at the church’s cemetery. Stephen Thomas Kutterer, 55, of Kansas City, Mo. died Feb. 7, 2014. He was born May 23, 1958, the son of Catherine Kutterer and the late Leo Kutterer. Mr. Kutterer is survived by his wife, Brenda Kutterer; brother, Charles (Sue) Kutterer of Waterloo; sisters, Rita Schueler and Genevieve (Robin) Perso; and nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Anne, Timothy, Elliott, Nolan and Nicholas. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by brothers, John and Joseph Kutterer; grandparents, Charles and Florence Heil and George and Genevieve Kutterer. Mr. Kutterer served in the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Forces. Visitation was at the White Chapel Funeral Home . Funeral was at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Gladstone, Mo. Wilbert "Wips" Bense, 82, of Columbia, died Feb. 5, 2014 at Swansea Rehabilitation. He was born April 25, 1931, in Red Bud, the son of the late Walter Fischer and Lydia (nee Bense) Ritter. Wips married Janet (Phillips) Bense in 1997. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Bense is survived by his children, Eugene Bense, Dennis (Vickie) Bense, Raymond (Barbara) Bense, Terri Vogt, Tamra (Kevin) Maly and Todd Bark; grandchildren, Christopher (Mary) Bense, Elizabeth (Geoff) Olish, Kelly McGraw, Jason Bense, Christina Poole, Dennis Bense, Eric Bense, Nicole (Jason) Richter, Danielle (Kevin) Hines, Neal Vogt, Kendra Bark and Lindsay Bark; great-grandchildren, Miranda, Ali, Abi, Austin, Logan, Claire and John; and a brother, Vernon Ritter of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joy (nee Sullivan) Bense; and an uncle, Edgar Bense. Wilbert attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbia. He was a member of the Columbia Senior Citizens. Wips was a retired parts manager for Waterloo Motors. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home.
