Mary Joyce Young, 89, of St. Louis, formerly of Dupo, died Feb. 6, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur, Mo. She was born July 17, 1924 in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Earl and Mildred (Fallon) Fritsch. Mrs. Young is survived by a son, Michael (Mary) Young of Columbia; daughter, Judy (Richard) Spieldoch of St. Louis; grandchildren, Melissa (Kurt) Costello, Eric (Lizanne) Young, Robert (Christine) Schmitt and Angela Schmitt; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Kate and Grace Costello, Mark and Thomas Young, Keaton Schmitt, Gilbert Nathan Schmitt, Tyler Bivins, Justin and Sarah Anne Pettigrew; and sister-in-law, Judy Fritsch Brown of Belleville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert “Bud” Young; brothers, Gerald, Noel and Earl Fritsch; and sisters, JoAnn Braun and Eileen Cooper. Mrs. Young attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dupo, and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. Visitation and funeral were at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. Kathryn F. Dilport, nee Nesbit, 89, of Columbia, died Feb. 7, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville. She was born Jan. 25, 1925, in Webster Groves, Mo., the daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen (nee Berry) Nesbit. Mrs. Dilport is survived by her children, Margaret E. Hogsed of Murphy, N.C., Richard P. (Jacque) Dilport, Jr. of Franklin, Tenn., Brenda J. (Daniel) Chaudet of Columbia, Barbara A. (Bill) Dachsteiner of New Athens and Rebecca A. (Rusty) Wise of Columbia; and a brother, Robert Nesbit of St. Louis; along with grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Dilport, who died in 1986; a daughter, Mary K. Dodson; grandchildren, David E. Dodson and Richard P. Dilport III; sisters, Mary Nesbit, Nellie Hickman, Josephine Whalen and Ellamae Dilport; and brothers, Tom and George Nesbit. Mrs. Dilport attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia with Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. Mrs. Dilport was buried at Jefferson Barracks. James V. Kuergeleis, 57, of Waterloo, died Feb. 15, 2014. He was born March 13, 1956 in Red Bud, the son of the late Vernon and Ida (nee Hesterberg) Kuergeleis. Mr. Kuergeleis is survived by wife, Debbie (nee Brinkmann) Kuergeleis; sons, Daniel (Michelle) Kuergeleis and Mark Kuergeleis (Kristy Yearian); grandchildren, Savannah, Mason and Lilly; mother-in-law, Shirley Wittenauer; sisters-in-law, Donna (Ronald) Solich and Dina (Brian) Nobbe; and brother-in-law, Duane (Christy) Brinkmann; along with an uncle, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Leroy Brinkmann; and brothers-in-law Dennis and David Brinkmann. Mr. Kuergeleis was the owner of Waterloo Home Improvement. Elmer L. Neubarth, 84, of Waterloo, died Feb. 15, 2014 in Waterloo. He was born March 29, 1929 in New Hanover, the son of the late Frank and Louise (nee Bicklein) Neubarth. Mr. Neubarth is survived by sisters, Leona H. Hoffmann, Dorothy (Robert) Rey and Gladys A. Maus; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his nephew Rick Maus. A graveside service was at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery.
Leona Burkhardt, nee Dickneite, 91, of Waterloo, died Feb. 16, 2014 in Belleville. She was born March 6, 1922, in Harrisonville, the daughter of the late Ben and Elenora (nee Engel) Dickneite. Mrs. Burkhardt is survived by her sons, Joe (Kelia) Van de Riet and Jim (Charlene) Van de Riet; 9 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; siblings Emma Diemert, Marie Yount, Catherine (Carnel) Gilbert, Eileen (Don) Goldschmidt, Elsie Branson and George (Polly) Dickneite; brother-in-law, Raymond (Shirley) Shoemaker; and sisters-in-law, Gerry Dickneite and Francis Dickneite; along with nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Van de Riet; second husband Robert Burkhardt; brothers Sylvester, Ben, Raymond and David Dickneite; sisters Bernadine Heider, Rose Mary Hergenroeder and Dorothy Shoemaker; daughters-in-law Mary and Barbara Van de Riet; and grandson-in-law Mike Steingrubey; along with sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Meta Grimes, nee Dervalis, 89, of Waterloo, died Feb. 2, 2013 in Columbia. She was born Aug. 20, 1924 in Collinsville, the daughter of the late John and Mada Dervalis. Mrs. Grimes is survived by her husband, Robert Grimes; step-children, Virginia (Roland) Heimann and Debra (Bobby) Gossett; and nieces, Donna Zamaroni and Janet (Harris) Tiek; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her nephew Danny Zamaroni. Visitation is Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Shirley Mae Naumann, 79, of Millstadt died Feb. 2, 2014 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. She was born Aug. 3, 1934 in Cherryville, Mo., the daughter of the late Paul and Gladys (NEE Gee) Williams. Mrs. Naumann is survived by a daughter, Lynn (Gary) Schwoebel of Belleville; a son, Kent (JoAnn) Naumann of Belleville; grandchildren, Cole Naumann of Rockford and Emily Naumann of Belleville; brothers, James (Barbara) Williams of New Athens, Larry Williams of Swansea, David (Donna) Williams of Belleville and Alan Williams of Ruskin, Fla.; and brothers-in-law, Robert (Clara) Naumann of Columbia, Gene “Bebs” (Carolyn) Naumann of Tulsa, Okla., Donald Naumann of Waterloo and Al Muskopf of Baldwin; along with nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Durrel E. “Buster” Naumann; sons, Douglas R. Naumann and Keith P. Naumann; a sister, Barbara Vogt; sisters-in-law, Marlene Muskopf and Shirley Lloyd; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Cora Naumann. Shirley’s first employment outside of the home was with Mertz Motor Company in Millstadt. Her medical receptionist career began with Dr. Tegtmeier and continued for many years, including with Drs. Ringhofer, McDermott, Wuller, Vest, Fricke and Kugler. Shirley attended Zion Evangelical Church in Millstadt where she was involved with the Sunday school and the Women’s Fellowship. She was a member of the Millstadt Civic Club and the sewing club. Visitation is Friday, Feb. 7, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt. Larry Alan “Al” Nolte, 48, of Columbia, died Jan. 14, 2014, at St. Anthony's Medical Center. He was born Oct. 14, 1965, in Centreville, the son of Gene Nolte of East Carondelet and Judith (nee Euge) Nolte of Columbia. Larry married Nicolle (“Niki) (nee Stechmesser) Nolte in 1989. In addition to his wife, Mr. Nolte is survived by his son, Robert Nolte of Columbia; a brother, Don (Tammy Johnston) Nolte of Dixon, Mo.; father-in-law, Glenn Stechmesser of Columbia; and brothers-in-law, Mike (Becky) Stechmesser and Scott (Kim) Stechmesser; along with nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Judith (nee Langhans) Stechmesser; and his grandparents, Robert (Bernice) Nolte and William (Alvera) Euge. Mr. Nolte was a mechanic at Lange-Stegmann Fertilizer in St. Louis. He was a member of the Columbia Jaycees and the Columbia Gymnastic Association. Denise E. Maxeiner, 48, of Columbia, died Jan. 15, 2014 at St. Anthony's Medical Center. She was born Feb. 2, 1965, in Spokane, Wash. Denise married Craig Maxeiner in 1993 in Kennewick, Wash. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Maxeiner is survived by her sons, Bryan Nelson Maxeiner and Brandon Alexander Maxeiner of Columbia; her father, Albert Dosch of Cut Bank, Mont.; a brother, David (Kerry) Dosch of Cut Bank, Mont.; sister-in-law, Carol (Jerry) Edwards of Castle Rock, Colo.; nieces and nephews; and her pets, Gomez, Sassy, Weazer and Box. She was preceded in death by her mother Joyce (Hall) Dosch; and in-laws, Martha and Armond Maxeiner. Mrs. Maxeiner attended St. Paul UCC in Columbia. Visitation and funeral were at Lawlor Funeral Home with Pastor Kristofer Avise Rouse officiating. Ruth Catherine Gastaldi, nee Ferkel, 90, of Saint Louis died Jan. 15, 2014. She was born April 18, 1923, in Columbia, the daughter of the late John and Katie (nee Wilde) Ferkel. Ruth was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul UCC in Columbia. Mrs. Gastaldi was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Reno J. Gastaldi. She was the sister of the late Vi (Norvin) Kampschroeder and the late Elmer P. (Mary) Ann) Ferkel; godmother of Mary Alice (Ferkel) Riley; aunt of the late Kenneth (Doris) Ferkel, David Kampschroed-er, the late Karl Kampschroeder, Karen (Kampschroeder) Oyer, Celia Reynolds and Susan Beatty; great-aunt of Debra (Ferkel) Braniecki, Linda (Ferkel) Mackey and Kenneth Ferkel, Jr.; and cousin of Alma Girard. Ruth was the valedictorian for the Columbia High School Class of 1941. She then graduated from Brown's Business College and was employed as an executive secretary for Boatman's Bank and Thomas A. Edison. Ruth married Reno Joseph Gastaldi, an accomplished sculptor, in 1953. Together they ran Reno Studios - Sculptured Originals for 30 years before retiring in 1985. Ruth and Reno celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2003. During her life, Ruth was active in many school, church and civic affairs.
