Mary Alice Helmers
Mary Alice Helmers, 85, of Macomb, formerly of LaHarpe, died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, in the Elms Nursing Home at Macomb.
She was born June 13, 1914, in Fountain Green Township, to Vernon and Christian May (George) Carmack. She married Wendell Helmers on March 10, 1938, in Nashua, Iowa. He died Aug. 4, 1987.
She is survived by sons Richard (Karen) of Macomb and Kenneth of Rock Island; grandchildren Douglas Helmers of Clark, Mo., Derek (Dovetta) Helmers of LaHarpe, Deborah (Tim) Canfield of Ada, Okla., and Johnna (Shannon) Fischer of Rock Island; eight great-grandchildren; one great-grand-stepson; sister-in-law Vera Dick of Rock Island; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and brother, George Wayne Carmack.
At an early age Mrs. Helmers moved with her parents to Blandinsville and attended school, graduating from Blandinsville High School with the class of 1932.
After graduation she worked at the Kirbride Bakery and Wolfe Drug Store. In 1936, she moved with her parents to LaHarpe, where she worked as a bookkeeper for Olen Bradshaw at the LaHarpe Creamery. She continued as a bookkeeper when the Peoria Creamery took over.
She was elected to several terms as city clerk and city treasurer. In July 1962, she started as bookkeeper and clerk for the LaHarpe Telephone Company, continuing there until she retired March 31, 1985.
She and her husband moved to the Jefferson House at Macomb in December 1985.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Macomb, LaHarpe Senior Citizens, Wee-Bit-O-Fun Club and the Blandinsville Order of the Eastern Star.
Services were Sunday in Banks & Beals Funeral Home at LaHarpe with the Rev. James Stovall officiating. Burial was in the LaHarpe Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Lions Club, LaHarpe Senior Citizens and the Elms Nursing Home.
Elmer Carl Kraatz
Elmer Carl Kraatz, 96, of Macomb, died at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, in Heartland Healthcare Center, Macomb.
He was born on July 29, 1903, in Chicago, the son of Albert and Minna (Lampe) Kraatz. He married Elsa Lautherbach on Sept. 25, 1936, at Seattle, Wash. She died in January 1995.
Survivors include daughter Marcia (Hans) Moll of Macomb; son William (Rose) Kraatz of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister Lucille Scholz of Freeland, Wash.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-grand-step-children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and daughter Lynda Kraatz.
Mr. Kraatz lived in Seattle, Minneapolis, Minn., Phoenix, and Mesa, Ariz., before moving to Macomb in 1995. He worked for many years as an Independent Insurance Agent and later for the city of Phoenix.
Services were Saturday in the Lutheran Student Center, Macomb, with the Rev. Mike Burdick officiating. Cremation rites were accorded and private entombment of ashes took place in Green Acres Cemetery at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Memorials may be made to The Lutheran Hour, Heartland Healthcare Center, or MDH Day Health Care.
Clugston-Tibbits Funeral Home in Macomb was in charge of arrangements.
Irma Grace Nash
Irma Grace Nash, 82, of Virden, formerly of Macomb, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999 in Doctors Hospital at Springfield.
She was born April 22, 1917, in Tiskilwa, Ill., to Louis and Minnie Roberts Parsons. She married Glenn Nash in 1947, at Macomb. He survives.
Survivors also include daughters Cynthia Forster of Green Bay, Wis., Claudia Nash of Springfield, Carol DuBois of Springfield; grandchildren Ashleigh Forster and Kayla DuBois; three nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Opal, Frances and Blanche; and brother Raymond.
Mrs. Nash lived in Macomb for many years before moving to Phoenix, from 1979 to 1996, when they moved to the Springfield area where she had resided since.
She worked as a bookkeeper for Montgomery Wards for many years and worked for Modern Home and Western TV.
She was a member of the First Christian Church from 1937 to 1979, First Christian Church at Phoenix from 1979 to 1996, and a member of West Side Christian Church at Springfield until 1999.
Services were Wednesday in Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Dorsey officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery at Macomb.She was born April 22, 1917, in Tiskilwa, Ill., to Louis and Minnie Roberts Parsons. She married Glenn Nash in 1947, at Macomb. He survives.
Thomas Melvin Milward
Thomas Melvin Milward, age 94, of 801 West Martin Street, Abingdon, died at 11:55 p.m. Thursday, October 15,1998 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born August 24,1904 in Warren County, Illinois, the son of Frank S. and Phoebe Berdella "Della" Armstrong Milward.
He married Lucile Rhykerd on June 6, 1927 in Cameron, Illinois. She died December 2, 1956. He married Iola Moore in November of 1957. She preceded him in death in 1958. His third marriage was to Leona Marshall in November 1960 at Abingdon. She died in 1985.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Art (Norma) Wolford, Abingdon; and two grandsons, John and Mark Wolford and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
He was in partnership with his father in the general store in Cameron, Illinois. He was later a welder at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg for 25 years. He had lived in Cameron and Abingdon areas most of his life. He attended Monmouth High School. He was a member of Abingdon Christian Church where he was a very active member.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel with Reverend Mark S. Wolford officiating. Burial was in the East Linwood Cemetery in Galesburg. Memorials may be made to the Abingdon Christian Church or Abingdon United Methodist Church.
William Donald Cavanaugh
William Donald Cavanaugh, 78, of 110 North 10th Street, Monmouth, passed away at 6:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 20, l998 at his home. He Was born September 22, 1920, in Cameron, Illinois the son of Frank Henry and Hazel Violet (Marsh) Cavanaugh. He attended Hale School, Monmouth High School and Peoria Institute of Business. Don married Corrine Beck in Peoria, Illinois, on November 15, 1941, and she survives, Surviving in addition to his wife are children, Bill (Ali) Cavanaugh of Lantana, FL, Patricia (Ron) Fritz of Morris, IL, Dennis (Sheilah) Cavanaugh of Monmouth, IL, Timothy (Carrie) Cavanaugh of Lainsburq, MI., and John (Jana) Cavanaugh of Monmouth, IL; Grandchildren, Richard Cavanaugh of Boynton Beach, FL, Crystal and Marie Cavanaugh of Lantan, FL, Heather Fritz of Sedgewickville, MO, William Joseph Cavanaugh of Monmouth, Christy Cavanaugh of Macomb, IL, Sara Cavanaugh of Monmouth, Nicholas Cavanaugh of Monmouth, Lisa Young of Boise, ID, and John Young of Santa Fe, NM; one brother, George Cavanaugh of Tucson, AZ. and one sister, Ruth Manuel of Monmouth. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Robert and Richard Cavanaugh and one sister, Rose Jebb. Don was the owner and operator of Cavanaugh Motors in Monmouth for 54 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Monmouth where he served for numerous years on the Church Board. He was also a member of the Monmouth Rotary Club, Illinois Auto Trade Association and was the Secretary of the Board at Security Savings Bank in Monmouth for 37 years. Don was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II, serving from October 1942 until February of 1946. Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 23, 1998 at the First Methodist Church of Monmouth with Rev. Bruce Baker officiating. Burial was in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, Monmouth. Memorials may be given to the First Methodist Church of Monmouth or the Warren County Cancer Society.
Rodney Moore
Rodney L. Moore, age 59, of 802 South Market Street, Knoxville, Illinois, died at 3:06 p.m. Sunday, October 11, 1998, at his home. He was born December 23, 1938, in Abingdon to Harold R. and Mildred Trimble Moore. Surviving are his mother of Galesburg; one son, Danny of Avon; one daughter, Jeri Moore Rand of Carthage; two brothers, Virgil of Galesburg and Gary of Irving, Texas; two sisters, Margie Johnson of Knoxville and Connie Healey of Lake St. Louis, Missouri; his friend, Lynn Conn, with whom he had lived; and six grandchildren. He was an electrician for Moore Electric for 40 years. He was a singer and guitarist for several bands including the Impacs and the Nutones. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Kevin Treptow officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Doris A. Davis
Doris A. Davis, 92, of Roseville died at 2:35 p.m. Sunday, October 18, 1998, at LaMoine Christian Nursing Home.
Born April 22, 1906, in Wilmington, Ohio, to John R. and Lucy D. Stackhouse Davis, she married Harold S. Davis on Sept. 18, 1926, in Ohio. He died in 1977.
One grandson, three sisters and one brother also preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Harold Jr. of Sheboygan, WI; one daughter, Jane Adkisson of Roseville; three sisters, Lois Howe of Columbus, Ohio, Mary Hackney of Wilmington and Jean Hendrickson of Cape Coral, FL.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She worked in the jewelry business and worked for Ohio State University. She later worked for the University of Illinois, where she was an admission counselor for the physics department.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Roseville Cemetery with the Rev. James Oliver officiating. Memorials may be made to LaMoine Christian Nursing Home.
Raymond O. Gillette
Raymond O. Gillette, 71, Roseville, passed away at at 6 a.m. Wednesday, October 14, 1998, at his home.
Born December 29, 1926, in Monmouth to Bernard and Cecil Orndoff Gillette, he married Frances Spicer on April 5, 1945, in Monmouth. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Michael (Coralis) Gillette of Gerlaw, George (Molly) Gillette of Little York and Dan (Brandy) Gillette of Galesburg; three daughters Mrs. Mike (Kathy) Malone of Galesburg, Carol Gillette of Roseville and Mrs. Don (Mary) Zellmer of Brinnon, WA; 26 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Barron of Monmouth; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Helen Gillette; and two brothers and one sister.
A construction worker, he was a member of Construction Workers Local 538. He and his son, Dan, owned and operated the Trading Post north of Monmouth from 1978 until 1981.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 17, at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel in Monmouth with the Rev. John Irwin officiating. Burial will be in Monmouth Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
W. Daniel Adair
William Daniel Adair, 56, of 412 E. First Ave. died at 11:50 p.m. Sunday, October 17, 1998, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.
Born Oct. 29, 1941, in Burlington, Iowa, to William C. "Bud” and Mildred E. McConnell Adair, he married Linda J. Painter on October 26, 1968, in Monmouth. She survives.
Also surviving are his parents of rural Monmouth; one brother, John of rural Kirkwood; two sisters, Mrs. Larry (Rebecca) Dowell of Strong- hurst and Mrs. John (Mary) Walters of rural Monmouth; and nieces and nephews. He farmed in rural Kirkwood and had worked for Riepe-Petersons Clothing Store in Burlington, Iowa.
He received an associate degree from Burlington Junior College in 1962. He was a former president of the Warren County YMCA.
He was a member of the Army Reserve and achieved the rank of sergeant.
He was a member, elder and deacon of Biggsville United Presbyterian Church and served on various church boards.
At the time of his death, he was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church, where services were held at 2:30 p .m. Wednesday with the Rev. Jerry Hazen officiating. Interment was in Biggsville Cemetery. Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth, was in charge of arrangements.
