Angel Hammond
Angel Denise Hammond, infant daughter of Travis Hammond and Katrina Church, of 108 W. South Street, Abingdon, was still born Saturday, October 17, 1998 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital in Galesburg.
Surviving are her parents; one sister, Carissa Hammond at home; her grandparents, Fred and Sandy Church of Galesburg, Robert and Nancy Little of Abingdon and Richard Cills of Knoxville; and her great-grandparents, Jay and Marie Hammond of Galesburg.
Private grave side services were held Tuesday at Abingdon Cemetery with Eleanor Landon officiating.
Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Junior Frazier
Junior Ray "J. R." Frazier, age 58 of 2122 Newcomer Drive, Galesburg, died at 11:50 p.m. Friday, October 15, 1998, at his home.
Born May 29, 1940, in Salisbury, Missouri, to Ebert J., and Mary Anna Powell Frazier, he married Alice A. Biggs on February 22,1964, in Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Jana Frazier, Laura Dutton and Wendy Frazier, all of Galesburg, and Carrie Lira of Stuart, Florida; 11 grandchildren; five brothers, Maurice, Jack, Roger and Mike, all of Galesburg, and Bobby of Abingdon; two sisters, Wanda Doubler and Kay Wall, both of Galesburg.
At the time of his death, he was employed by NAEIR (National Association for the Exchange of Industrial Resources). Prior to that, he worked for Gale Products Division of Outboard Marine Corp. for 17 years.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial was in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or any charity.
Paul Rockhold
Paul Rockhold, age 73, of Moline, formerly of Roseville, died at 1:27 p.m. Saturday, October 24, 1998, at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa. Born February 14, 1925, in Jefferson City, Missouri, to Edward and Bessie Fields Rockhold, he married Ollie C. Schisler on December 30,1954, in Milan. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Paul of Moline and Michael of Davenport; three brothers, Raymond of Rock Island, Robert of Branson, Missouri, and William of East Moline; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Five sisters and one brother preceded him in death. A member of Painters Local 152, he was a painter for McLaughlin Body Shop. He also was a painter for John Deere Company in Moline, J. I. Case in Rock Island and Rock Island Housing. Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Corman Memorial Home in Roseville with Rev. Donnie Phomens officiating. Burial was in Point Pleasant Cemetery in rural Roseville.
Lauretta Bennett
Lauretta Bennett, age 86, of 420 East Main Street, Good Hope, died at 8:27 a.m. Sunday, October 25 at her residence. Born October 14, 1912, in McDonough County to Chester and Helen Spicer Kessler, she married Myrle Bennett on July 3, 1937 in Davenport, Iowa. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Bruce Bennett of Knoxville and Myron Bennett of Clinton, Pa.; one daughter, Diane Thurman of Moline, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; and one half brother, Elwin Kessler of Avon. She was preceded in death by four sisters. She worked at Kewanee Public Hospital; St. Francis Hospital and McDonough District Hospital, both in Macomb; and Roseville Nursing Home. She also did private nursing. She was a graduate of Gem City Business College in Quincy and St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Macomb. She was a member of the Pilot Knob Club and the Retired Nurses Club. She was a member of Good Hope United Methodist Church. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Sargent-Worthington Funeral Home in Macomb. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Macomb.
N. Maxine Pedigo
N. Maxine Pedigo, age 79, of 200 North Washington Street, Abingdon, Illinois, died at 7:26 a.m. Friday, October 23, 1998 at her home. She was born August 20,1919 at Roseville, Illinois, the daughter of Ray and Mabel Enfield Swanson. Her first marriage was to Marston Ikerd. He died August 15, 1980. She married C. L. "Toncey" Pedigo on June 5,1983 in Abingdon, Illinois. He survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Cathy Ikerd, Quincy, Illinois; two stepsons, Gaylord Pedigo, R.R. Galesburg and Greg Pedigo, Somerset, Kentucky; three step-daughters, Kathy Lawrence, Bradford, Illinois, Dale Mansir, Colchester, Illinois and Letty Carr, Maquon, Illinois; one brother, Ray J. Swanson, Plant City, Florida; one sister, Louise Hulick, Abingdon; 21 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter Sue Anne Bower, one granddaughter Nicole Hawkins and one sister Mildred Nordstrom. She grew up in Abingdon and attended Abingdon schools. She later worked at the former Blue Bell Company in Abingdon for 10 years. She and her her first husband had lived in Quincy, Illinois for 33 years where she worked as a line supervisor at Motorola for 26 years retiring in 1972. She returned to Abingdon after her marriage to Mr. Pedigo in 1983. She was a member of First Christian Church in Quincy. She was an avid golfer. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Abingdon with Revs. Steve and Raney Good officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Felix McVey
Felix L. McVey, 88, formerly of Roseville, Illinois, died at 5 a.m. Monday, October 26, 1998, at Farmington Center in Farmington. Born May 20, 1910, in Warren County, Virginia, to Dave and Florence Thomas McVey, he married Edna Rockhold on January 5, 1930, in Kirkwood. She died January 4, 1998. Two sons and five brothers also preceded him in death. Surviving are five sons, Niven of Farmington, David of Trivoli, Rondal of Maquon, Larry of Elmwood and Vernon of Kevil, Kentucky; one sister, Mary Ross of Minnesota; 26 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He was a farmer in Roseville. He was a member of Roseville Nazarene Church and Royal Order of the Moose 1571 in Farmington. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Corman Funeral Home, Roseville with Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services at the memorial home. Burial will be in the Roseville Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to his church or Farmington Rescue Squad.
Harriet L. Lewis
Harriet L. Lewis, age 72, of 8745 East Sand Branch Road, Astoria, Illinois, died Thursday, October 22, 1998 at 11:33 p.m. at McDonough District Hospital, Macomb. She was born July 9, 1926 in Rushville the daughter of Jess and Gertrude (Myers) Brooks. She married Merle L. Lewis on May 21, 1951 in Galesburg, Illinois. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1998. Surviving are three sons, Jerry Lewis, Simms, MT.; Bob Brooks, of Dahinda, Illinois and Sam Lewis, of Summum, Illinois; three daughters, Beverly Chidester of Fairmont, IN., Annie Stambaugh of Astoria and Chris Wall of Astoria, Illinois. She was preceded by one sister, Edna Lucille Foster. She was a homemaker. Funeral services were held Sunday, October 25, 1998 at the Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Reverend TimWorstell officiating. Burial was in the Summum Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Astoria Fire and Rescue Squad.
Verner Rylander
Verner Vincent Rylander, age 86, of 127 N. Joy Street, Oneida, died at noon Wednesday, October 21, 1998, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. Born January 13, 1912, in Ontario Township, Knox County to Elfing and Lydia Eklund Rylander, he married Pauline Yocum on December 11,1935, in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Lillian) Voss of San Diego and Mrs. Ron (Karen) Moody of Altona; two sons, John of Rock Falls and Charles "Chuck" of Oneida; two sisters, Irene Johnson of Oneida and Doris Widbin of Morton; one brother, Erland of Oneida; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Three brothers preceded him in death. He worked at Abingdon Pottery and Galva Foundry. He then was a corn sheller doing custom work in the Oneida area, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church in Altona. He formerly served on the Oneida City Council and the Oneida Fire Department. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Oneida with Rev. Tim Anderson officiating. Burial was in Oneida Cemetery. Memorials may be made to his church or to any charity.
Marvin E. "Gene” Hottel
Marvin E. "Gene” Hottel, 65, 504 E. Second Ave., Monmouth, passed away at 1:20 p.m. Saturday, October 17, 1998, in St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. He was born April 6, 1933, in Abingdon, the son of Lyle and Fannie Pierce Hottel. He married Ruth Scott. Surviving are one son, Vincent Hottel, Pittsfield, MA; his mother, Fannie Hottel, Monmouth; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. He was reared in Augusta, and was graduated from Augusta High School. He received a bachelors degree from Monmouth College. He also attended Western Illinois University, Macomb, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. He served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He was branch head technician for the Strategic Systems Projects Office in the Department of the Navy for 28 years. He retired in 1988 and returned to Monmouth. Most recently, he drove a school bus for Laidlaw Transit Inc., Galesburg. He held a pilot’s license. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth, with the Rev. Kenneth Klein officiating. Burial was in Augusta Cemetery. Benjamin Goldsmith
Benjamin F. Goldsmith, age 79, of 307 East Seventh Street, Beardstown, died Friday, October 30, 1998, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
Born October 29, 1919, in Davenport, Iowa, to Benjamin F. and Kathleen Spear Goldsmith, he married Mary Leta Hobbs on January 14, 1972, in Cass County. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Benjamin H. of Bushnell and Ken of Hopkinsville, Kentucky; two daughters, Ruth Sipes of Springfield and Anna Pepper of Abingdon; two stepsons, Robert Hobbs of Pekin and David Hobbs of Plant City, Florida; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
One granddaughter preceded him in death.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
He was a corporate and out of state auditor for the State of Illinois, retiring in 1973.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sager Funeral Home. Burial was in Beardstown City Cemetery.
