Marjorie R. Akins
Marjorie R. Akins, age 63, of Macomb, formerly of Monmouth, passed away at 9:15 p.m. Monday, January 25, 1999 in McDonough District Hospital, Macomb.
She was born February 27, 1935, in Hancock County, the daughter of Jess and Treacy Lovell Hoover.
She married Arthur L. Akins on April 30, 1952, in Pocahontas, Arkansas. He died March 18, 1988.
Surviving are one son, Robert Akins, Monmouth; four daughters, Marilyn Flesner, Washington, Joy Upton, Avon, Barbara Watkins, Ursa, and Toni Martin, Monmouth; one stepson, Larry Akins, Augusta; four sisters, Sadie Olson and Betty Thompson, both of Macomb; Maude Lambert, Lakeland, Florida; and Jessie Sanders, Carbon Cliff; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.
She was reared and educated in Hancock County. She attended Carthage High School.
A certified nurse’s aid, she worked at Monmouth Nursing Home for 20 years. She moved to Macomb in 1989 and worked at Wesley Village until retiring in 1995.
She was a member of Monmouth Assembly of God Church.
Cremation was accorded. Graveside services was at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Monmouth Cemetery with Rev. Jim Epperson officiating.
Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth was in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the McDonough District Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
Edith Mae Hall
Edith Mae Hall, 107, of Abingdon, formerly of London Mills, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, February 9,1999 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
Born June 30, 1891, in London Mills to Marcus E. and Clara Belle Mills Watkins, she married Leroy Hall on February 26, 1917. He died July 24, 1963.
She also was preceded in death by a son and two sisters.
Surviving are one granddaughter, Shirley J. Cook of London Mills; one niece, Loava Martin of Peoria; three great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-great-grandchildren.
A lifelong resident of London Mills, she was a member of the London Mills Christian Church.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Haynes Cemetery in Delong. Corman Memorial Homes in London Mills was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the London Mills Senior citizens Association.
Eleanor Schindler
Eleanor Schindler, 88, Bushnell, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 1999, at her residence.
Born July 15, 1910, in Prairie City to Wilbur and Charlotte Serven Hughbanks, she married Fritz Schindler on September 4, 1929, in Macomb. He passed away February 2, 1987.
One sister and five brothers also preceded her in death.
Surviving are one brother, Henry Hughbanks of Prairie City; one sister, Evelyn Smith of Bushnell; and several nieces and nephews, including Leo Fitch, who took care of her during her illness.
She owned and operated Bushnell Tastee Freeze for 25 years.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 13, at Martin-Hollis Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Green officiating. Burial was in Prairie City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the McDonough District Hospital Hospice Program in Macomb.
Louise Helen Cline
Louise Helen Cline, age 75, of 506 Maple Street, Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 9:50 a.m.Thursday, February 11, 1999 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born September 7, 1923 in Galesburg, Illinois, the daughter of Guy A. and Helen Hendryx Harshbarger. She married Fred Cline August 14, 1949 in Galesburg, Illinois. He survives.
Survivors include one son Rick (Mary) Cline, Libertyville, Illinois; two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Sheryl) Lashley-Cline, Galesburg and Mrs. Richard (Patricia) Morozink, Woodstock, Illinois and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Jean Alves.
She grew up in Galesburg where she graduated from Galesburg High School in 1941 and later from Knox College in 1947.
She had lived in Abingdon most of her life. Prior to that she had lived in Kewanee, Illinois and Brooklyn, New York.
She was a homemaker, a retired substitute teacher for Abingdon School District and had done personnel work/psychological testing for the University of Illinois Branch formerly in Galesburg.
She was a member of Abingdon Christian Church.
She was also a former Girl Scout leader, member of Phi Beta Music Sorority, and officer and member of BB P.E.O. She was an avid pianist and violinist.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday at the Abingdon Christian Church with Reverend Raymond McLaren and Mrs. Eleanor Landon officiating. Burial was in the Meridian Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Abingdon Christian Church or Galesburg Rescue Mission.
Ada Louise McClelland
Graveside services for Ada Louise McClelland, 88, Monmouth, were held Friday, February 19, at 2 p.m. in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, Monmouth. Rev. James Epperson of the First Christian Church officiated.
Mrs. McClelland passed away Wednesday, February 17, 1999, at 4:30 a.m. in Community Medical Center, Monmouth. Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, was in charge of arrangements.
The daughter of Joseph and Anna Katherine (Carpenter) Lovitt, she was born October 23, 1910 in Roseville. She married John S. McClelland, September 12, 1934, who passed away, April 10, 1955.
Her parents, three brothers and nine sisters also preceded her in death.
She leaves several nieces and nephews, among them Michael Lovitt and his wife, Nancy, and Ronnie Lovitt, both of Monmouth, whom she raised.
Mrs. McClelland grew up and received her education in Warren County. She was a cook for local restaurants for many years, was an employee of Western Stoneware for 13 years and retired after eight years from Wells Pet Food. She attended the Monmouth First Christian Church and was a member of the Monmouth VFW Post #2301 Auxiliary and the Monmouth Eagles Club.
Jacquelyn "Jackie" Timberlake
Jacquelyn "Jackie" J. Timberlake, age 58, of 707 West North Street, Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 12:25 p.m. Thursday, February 18, 1999 at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, Illinois.
She was born January 12, 1941 East of Abingdon, Illinois, the daughter of J. Vernon and Hilma Roberts Boyer. She married Merle Timberlake. They were divorced.
Survivors include one son, Jon Timberlake, Abingdon, Illinois; one daughter, Carla Puleo, Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Larry Boyer, Abingdon and Danny Boyer, London Mills, Illinois; four sisters, Marna Johnson, Wanita Way, Peggy Thomas, all of Abingdon and Holly Powell, Avon; five grandchildren and aunts, uncles and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.
She grew up in the Abingdon area and attended Abingdon and Avon schools.
She formerly worked at Admiral’s in Galesburg. She moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1969 where she worked as a parts inspector for Alliedsignal Aerospace Corp.
She moved back to Abingdon in December of 1998.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon with Mrs. Eleanor Landon officiating. Burial was in Avon Cemetery, Avon, Illinois.
Memorials may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation.
Edward Grady
Edward E. Grady, age 72, of 357 Fair Acres Drive, Galesburg, passed away at 1:00 a.m. Monday, February 22, 1999, at St. Mary Medical Center.
Born June 18,1926, in Galesburg to James L. and Mary Leona O’Connor Grady, he married Mary L. Carr on October 18, 1947, in Galesburg. She preceded him in death.
One brother and one sister also preceded him in death.
Surviving are three sons, Michael, Patrick and James, all of Galesburg; two daughters, Gloria Goss of Brookfield, Wis., and Kathy Bushman of Eagan, Minn.; one brother, John of Peoria; and four grandchildren.
He was a fireman for the city of Galesburg for several years. He owned Grady’s 2100 Club since 1965 and the Top Brass in Abingdon from 1979 to 1998,
A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2257.
He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Galesburg Restaurant Association and a former member of the Moose Lodge.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at his church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday At Watson Funeral Home, with recitation of the rosary at 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded.
Barbara Harn
Barbara J. Harn, age 61, of 601 East Osborn, Bushnell, formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 2:52 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 1999 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.
Born November 6, 1937, in Berwick Township, Warren County, to Leo and Mary Eva Bowie Danner, she married Kenneth Frey in 1954 in Abingdon. She later married Leo Harn in 1974 in Bushnell. She was divorced from both husbands.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Frey, Abingdon, David Harn, St. Augustine and Michael Harn, Avon; three daughters, Tonda Carnes, Teresa Harn-Johnson, both of Abingdon and Katrina Boys, St. Augustine; one step sister, Pauline Shinn, Abingdon; 14 grandchildren, including Kelly Harn who was raised her home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, 1 brother and 1 granddaughter.
She was a homemaker. She attended Abingdon School. She had lived in Bushnell since 1993 and prior to that had lived most of her life in the Abingdon area. She attended the Church of God of Prophecy in Abingdon.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon with Rev. Warren Cummins and Mrs. Eleanor Landon officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to her family.
Nora E. Sleutz
Nora E. Sleutz, age 72, formerly of 612 East First Street, Galesburg, Illinois, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, 1999 in The Marigold Health Care Center, 275 East Carl Sandburg Drive.
She was born March 25, 1926, in Moline, the daughter of Ross L. and Nora L. Bowers Curtis.
She married Raymond Gillenwater in 1942. He preceded her in death. She married William Harry Sleutz in 1946. He passed away in 1959.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandra K. Kelso, Galesburg; three brothers, John Curtis and Ernie Curtis, both of Abingdon and Jimmy Curtis, East Galesburg; two sisters, Betty Strickland, Galesburg, and Geraldine DeJaynes, Abingdon; four grandchildren, three step grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, eight step great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and one step great-grandchild.
She was a homemaker. She attended Jacksonville School for the Blind.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday in Abingdon Cemetery.
