Myrtle B. Allison
Myrtle B. Allison, age 87, of 300 North Jefferson, Street, Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 3:35 p.m. on Friday, March 26, 1999 at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, Illinois. She was born July 27, 1911 near Farmington, Illinois, the daughter of Albert J. and Ollie Harper Hedden. She married Lloyd Allison on November 10, 1932. He passed away on August 22, 1975. Survivors include one brother, Robert F. Hedden, Galesburg; one sister, Gladys Murphy, Abingdon and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister. She was a former school bus driver for Spoon River Valley School District and also helped her husband with Allison Trucking Business. She had lived in Abingdon since 1975. She was a member of Abingdon Christian Church. Funeral services were held Monday, March 29, 1999 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Abingdon, with Reverend Raymond McLaren officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Fairview Memorials may be made to the Abingdon Christian Church.
Patricia Bell
Patricia Bell, 63, of Plymouth, died 6:45 a.m. Wednes-day, March 31, 1999, in the Macomb Senior Living Center. She was born Aug 8, 1935, in Macomb to Harry Rufus and Clara Myrtle Weaver Johnson. She married Roland Bell April 2, 1965, in Macomb. He survives. She is also survived by one brother, Donald Johnson of Canton; one sister, Mary Lou Houston of Mount Sterling; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Tony (Barb) McCollum of Kingsport, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Bell was a homemaker and a graduate of Macomb High School. She was of the Methodist faith. She was a member of the Carthage VFW Auxiliary. Services were Saturday in the Hamilton Funeral Home in Plymouth with the Rev. Henry Nash officiating. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery in Plymouth.
Curtis Strode
Curtis W. Strode, 88, of rural Marietta, passed away at 4:19 a.m. Sunday, April 4, 1999, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb. Born March 2, 1911, in rural Marietta to Charles E. and Maggie B. Watson Strode, he married Mary M. Williamson on Feb. 27, 1943, in Canton. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Curtis of Marietta; one daughter, Mrs. A. L. (Sharon) Lashbrook of Camp Point; and four grandchildren. A graduate of Western Illinois University in Macomb, he also studied agriculture at the University of Wisconsin for more than two year. A member of Fulton County Farm Bureau, he farmed on the family farm in Fulton County. He also was chairman of the Fulton County Soil and Water conservation Board. He was a 50-year member of Bushnell United Methodist Church in Bushnell. He also was a member of Gideon International. He was a member of Sons of the American Revolution, where he served as chairman, and was chairman of the Fulton County Historical Society, where he was editor of the newsletter for many years. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at his church with Rev. Martha Scaff officiating. Martin -Hollis Funeral Home in Bushnell was in charge of the arrangements. Burial was in Bushnell Cemetery. Memorials may be made to his church or to Gideon International.
Bernice Horton
Bernice Horton, 90, of 100 West Jefferson St., Macomb, formerly of Plymouth, died at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, April 4, 1999, in McDonough District Hospital, Macomb. She was born Aug. 19, 1908, in Denver to William Marion and Efie Florilla (Mackey) Matheny. She married Scott Holton, on June 23, 1927, in Keokuk, IA. He died July 24, 1985. She is survived by cousins. Mrs. Holton was a homemaker. She was a 1926 graduate of Plymouth High School and was a member of the first First Baptist Church of Plymouth. She was also a member of the Grange in Washington State. Graveside services were Wednesday at the Rosemont Cemetery in Plymouth with the Rev. Henry Nash officiating. Memorials made be made to the First Baptist Church of Macomb.
Nellie Haulk
Nellie Haulk, 96, of 516 W Orchard St., in Macomb died at 2:15 p.m. April 2, 1999, in the Elms Nursing Home. She was born Dec. 15, 1902, in Blue Springs, Neb., to Albert and Gertie Acton Arneal. She married Glen Haulk on Sept. 15, 1992, in Colby, Kan. She is survived by one son, Beryl (Jean) Haulk of Macomb; two daughters, Maxine Rodgers of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; and Betty Devine of Glenview, Ill.; 13 grandchildren;15 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Dick (Wanda) Armstrong of Mineral Ridge, Ohio, and Mrs. John (Ethel) Hensley of Pueblo, Colo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glen, who died Feb. 24, 1986; one son, Max, who died recently; three brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Haulk was a longtime employee of Montgomery Ward and for many years the secretary to the McDonough County superintendent of highways until her retirement. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, a charter member and past president of the Macomb Business & Professional Women, Home Bureau Extension, Grandmothers Club, MDH Auxiliary, and a life member of the Rebekah Lodge. Services were held at Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home on Wednesday with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
Evelyn M. Frost
Evelyn M. Frost, 74, of 1601 Riverview Drive, Macomb, died at Heartland Health Care Center, Macomb. She was born May 19, 1924, in Wednesday, England, to Edward and Hannah Owen. She married Jack Frost Oct. 7, 1944, in Wednesday, England. He died Nov. 22, 1997. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Elaine Frost. She is survived by four sons, Tony Frost of Macomb; Jack Frost Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; Robert Frost of Frisco, Texas and Kenneth of Frost of Mooresville, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and several brothers and sisters who live in England. Mrs. Frost was a member of the Macomb BPO Deers and the American Legion Auxiliary. Services were Friday in the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home, Macomb, with the Rev. Ron Green officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
Mary Elizabeth Clark
Mary Elizabeth Clark, 78, of 1200 E Grant St., Macomb, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at 2:55 a.m. at McDonough District Hospital after a nine-year struggle with breast cancer. She was born Dec 12, 1920, in Buenavista Township, Schuyler County, to James Lloyd and Bernice Lawler Loring. She married Cecil Lewis Atkinson of Macomb July 11, 1941. He died in Ogden, Utah, on April 27, 1977. Mary Elizabeth married Paul George White of Petersburg on July 17, 1982. He died Aug 10, 1983. She married Vincent Dean Clark of Macomb on Aug. 10, 1983. He survives. Mary Elizabeth graduated from Rushville High School and attended Weber State University, Ogden, Utah; Utah State University, Logan, Utah; Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.; and the University of Tel Aviv, Israel. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She taught school in the Ogden schools for 22 years. She was a member of the Rushville Audubon Society, the Society of Mayflower Descendants, Macomb Beautiful Association, Macomb YMCA, Macomb Country Club, and the Methodist Parish, Ebenezer Church, Camden Road, Rushville. Surviving are a sister, Dorothy ( F. John )Taylor of Virginia, Ill.; a son, James Loring and Debbie Atkinson of Salt Lake City, Utah; a daughter, Mary Sheila (Mark Schmidt) of Shelton, Wash., and three grandchildren: Adam Loring Atkinson of Salt Lake City, Utah and Amy Dawn Schmidt and Max Lewis Schmidt of Shelton, Wash. There are also three stepchildren and four grand-stepchildren. Graveside services were Friday in Rushville City Cemetery with David Haney officiating. Sargent-Worthington Funeral Home was in charge of cremation rites. Memorials may be made to Macomb Beautiful Association or Wesley Village.
Martha J. Starbuck
Martha J. Starbuck, 75, of 100 W. Jefferson St., Macomb died at 9:35 p.m. Tues., March 30, 1999, at McDonough District Hospital, Macomb. She was born Feb. 24, 1924, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Clarence and Helena Seidle Rhoades. She is survived by two sons, Terry Starbuck of Roseville and Donald Starbuck of North Vernon, Ind., two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents and one son, Tomas C. Starbuck, who died in infancy. Mrs. Starbuck had lived in Good Hope and Adair before moving to Macomb in 1977. She was a former member of the Center Star Women’s Club in Good Hope. Cremation rites were accorded by Clugston-Tibbits Funeral Home, Macomb. Services were Friday in the Glade City Cemetery in Blandinsville with the Rev. Dean Reeverts officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Charles Danial Briggs Sr.
Charles Danial Briggs Sr., age 85, a resident of the Care Center of Abingdon, Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 2:16 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 1999 at the Care Center. He was born August 19, 1913 near Maquon, Illinois, the son of Judson W. and Mabel Chappelle Briggs. He married Shirley Dean Huggins in June of 1942 in Norfolk, Virginia. She preceded him in death in November of 1986. Survivors include four sons, Charles D. Briggs Jr., Abingdon, Illinois; James R. Briggs, Severn, Maryland; William G. Briggs, Bradenburg, Kentucky and Judson C. Briggs, Dubuque, Iowa; one daughter, Janet Wallick, Roseville, Illinois; one brother, B. Gene Briggs, Simi Valley, California; two sisters Mabel "Betty" Gibson, and Barbara Frye, both of Huntington Beach, California; 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and one sister. He had lived in Abingdon since 1972 and prior to that had lived in Maquon. He attended Maquon schools. He was a switch repairman for Intrastate Telephone Company in Galesburg. He was a navy veteran of WW II serving in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He was a past member of American Legion Post 1099 in Maquon. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon. Burial was in the Maquon Cemetery with military rites accorded. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
